  • Any coach service which requires a drive-on/drive-off ferry link must be tried. However, the actual route was slightly different from that advertised. Very confusing, but very enjoyable. #flixbus #dfds #amsterdam

Seen it many times but it still gets me every time, the departures board in Victoria Coach station which says ''departing flights'' in German! Because in German there isn't a single word for departures, there is Abreise for vehicles, Abfahrt for trains, and Abfluege for planes. I guess the person who translated it copied it from an airport departures board.

To get from Sloterdijk to Centraal you either want to take an overground NS Sprinter (€2,60/6mins) or GVB Bus 22 (€2,37/22mins). Or if you want to arrive at the Leidseplein then Tram 19 (€2,11/20mins) would get you there.

I just rounded out 2 months in Europe coming back from Bruges on Flixbus. The 30-minute stop you mention is a rest break for the driver(s) - their being on the ferry isn't a break, they have things to do that you don't see. Personally, I'd rather be a touch late and have drivers who are fresh than be one of the accidents coaches have.
Hope you enjoyed your time in the Netherlands!

The coaches use whichever is convenient or cheapest on the day. There's not a vast difference in timing between the two french ports. Dunkirk is further north, but it takes about an extra half hour at sea. Whereas Calais takes less time at sea, and it's less than 30 mins on the autoroute at coach speed to be passing Dunkirk's ferry exit.

@@liamtahaney713 while postwar, the Brugge station is quite nice, and the wall paintings in the old ticket hall are beautiful. I honestly prefer Brugge at the moment.

Great video! Those Flixbus routes are interesting to say the least. Seat 2A is indeed the best in any coach.
If you take the train from Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal, it will only be 10 minutes and will cost 2,60 euros. Only if you pay with your bank card or by a pre-bought ov-chipkaart, if you buy a one-way ticket for any train, an additional fixed fee of 1 euro will be added for the paper ticket itself... So, use your regular debit bank card to pay.

I had to laugh when you took the metro in Amsterdam. The train is much faster. Or you could have taken a local bus, that would have been faster then the metro. The flixbus station is also the entrance to the underground parking garage of the offices I work at. One of my colleagues takes a bus to get from where he lives in the East of Amsterdam to Sloterdijk via Central Station. Not as fast as the train, but much faster then the metro.

    I ❤ Flixbus!
I live in Amsterdam and use Fluxbus often for work and family visits to various cities in western Germany, northern France including Lille, and the Belgian cities.
Until 3 years ago, I used trains for this travel, but now PREFER to use Flixbus mainly because it's faster than trains to anywhere in Belgium, it'smore frequent & convenient, it's only slightly less comfortable regarding space. And yes, it's MUCH cheaper than any of the trains.
I'm an older retiree and always pay the few € extra that it costs to book a forward seat behind the driver - there, i sit comfortably with panoramic view, listen to music via the inboard wifi and a journey of a few hours is over in no time!
I actually PREFER IT to economy-class Eurostar (formerly Thalys).

It’s almost the furthest you can go on the metro. You have to make the full circle. More then half an hour

@@MrJimheeren The original plan was to close the circle, so that you could travel from Sloterdijk to Centraal clockwise in just a few minutes (the metro would run parallel to the tracks that the Eurostar takes to Centraal). But the track never got beyond Isolatorweg station, so there's a gap in the circle. Going counter clockwise, like shown in the video, takes a long time. 17 stops, and some stops are like 200m apart so it really feels like there's not progress at all.
Surface trains have been mentioned and are the best choice if you need to go to Centraal from Sloterdijk. They only take about 6 minutes from Sloterdijk to Centraal, but can be rather busy. If, for whatever reason, the surface trains are not an option for you, take bus 22 instead (it takes about 20 minutes - faster than the metro on this route).
Sloterdijk is next to Teleport Business District, which makes no sense to have as a terminus for international buses. No person going to the business district will take something like Flixbus, and people who do take Flixbus usually would want to go to the city center.
But the bus terminal at Amsterdam Centraal is a bit on the small side. And road traffic into the city center is murder. Hopefully they'll move the international bus station to Amsterdam Zuid station in the future - there's a metro connection from Amsterdam Zuid straight through the city center with stops at all the places you'd want to go as a tourist too (Rokin for the shops and RL district, Europaplein for the RAI Convention Center, Vijzelgracht station is right next to Rijksmuseum etc.) and stops at Centraal (level -2, so one below level below the metro stop shown in this video) too.

Great video as always FlixBus use Sloerdijk as their base for Amsterdam, I was rushing last time I arrived as the coach from Düsseldorf was 3 hours late but at least there were plenty of trains to Central. I am taking a Hull to Rotterdam mini cruise in December to visit the Mauritius art muses, in The Hague. It’s very cheap in the low season and you get a bed so much better than a coach.

Just amazed at how much Sloterdijk area has changed since I passed through in , I think, 1976. Before there was a metro, anyway. We went Harwich to Hook of Holland, land sectors by train.
There’s a ‘direct’ coach/ferry/coach service to Krakow you might try. I overcame my dislike of airports after that. Enabling the vicarious experience of sharing your travels is always a pleasure.

"Any coach service which requires a drive-on/drive-off ferry link must be tried." There is one company offering a London route by ferry that had me interested for a while. Mainly because they also offer direct busses form Lisbon, Albufeira and other places on the iberic peninsula to Sofia, Bulgaria. These are as far as I can discover Europe's longest long distance coach routes. However they also have a London-Sofia route taking about 48hrs which also sells tickets to the intermediate halts, in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. A channel crossing by boat to Belgium or Lille for some TGV action maybe worth a try on the Bulgarian busses of union-ivkoni.

If that bus had gone to Utrecht it would be no hardship .I find it cheaper and less crowded than Amsterdam and only 30 min by train from Central Amsterdam .

Oh lordy, that brings back memories. Way back in the 1970s, after backpacking overland (where possible) from Amsterdam to Melbourne, Australia, I returned to Amsterdam from Victoria coach station in London through a shonky but very cheap travel company. Nothing seemed to go to plan, including spending a night under a table in the bar of an ancient ferry from Dover to Zeebrugge in Belgium - I hasten to add that I was completely sober but the boat was tiny and rustic and under the table was the only place I could find to lay down. Had to keep my face to the side and my mouth closed to avoid being used as an ashtray. I can't remember where we landed, but it certainly wasn't Zeebrugge. The coach from wherever it was in Belgium to Amsterdam was comfortable enough (hallelujah!) and I managed to get a couple of hours of much needed sleep. Then I was dumped not at Amsterdam central station as scheduled but about 2 kms east along the Amstel river. Not a taxi to be seen so ended up walking to the station and then took a taxi to the home of a fellow expat resident. Great to see him and assorted droppers-in after so long away, but I was expected to sparkle and I was all sparkled out.

Try the coach service from Rotterdam all the way to Gibraltar. Eurolines. If you have the right ticket then you can stay until the next coach wherever possible at all the stops all the way down to Gibraltar. Alas the bright lights of benidorm were enough to cut my journey short.
