- Arab Americans need a box, like everyone else, so we can be counted and so we can count! Amer is a Palestinian-American comedian, musician, & writer. As the child of Palestinian refugees, his special brand of comedy is fresh, enlightening, and, of course, hilarious.
He has performed to live audiences throughout America, Canada, and the Arab World, making people laugh in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Boston, Toronto, Amman, Muscat, Beirut, Nazareth, Haifa, Yafa, Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Jerusalem. Soon patience will run out and tolerance will turn to self defence.. Then everyone will remember what happens when we have been pushed too far.

BC Do you know how slow the bureaucratic system is? How long it would take to file millions upon millions of forms, and you also have cases where people put in the same word spelled differently, and then those end up classified as 26 races but theyre really one race (written the same). There is no perfect system.

In the US the boxes are needed due to systemic racism. Sadly, in America, the lighter your skin the more privileges you receive. Since this is the majority of the population, the US has laws to protect persons that are in the minority. Some of those laws mandate diversity and inclusion in different organizations of people. Therefore, it is important to have the "Arabic American" box so that Arab Americans in the US can be represented adequately in the USA.

The reason is that a long time ago by law only a person considered legally white was allowed certain privileges like openening a shop or specific investments so an Arab went to court and argued for him to be registered as white and he won the case and gained full rights as a result of that and since then Arabs are conveniently considered white in this weird dynamic that the USA has. After him a Japanese man tried to argue the same case that japanese are white but failed to do so.

No it isn't they do or don't. One person got a ruling and as a result everybody was labeled as such. The term white is very ambiguous and very weird as an umbrella phrase so what if someone was from an Arab country but is of Indian or Nigerian decent is he then white? I think all this sensus thing needs to be evaluated but hyphenation has become an American traight, that and the excessive use of flags.
Because the Arab group who fought it that time were very white blonde so they give them the white box not to the Japanese one. There are some Arabic countries are seriously white and blonde!

I am British and Egyptian, but i don’t see the fuss, maybe it’s just me but, i don’t really care about race or ethnicity or whatever, i see a lot of people, mixed race or like me who are white, but chose to embrace the ethnic side of their family and i see why, they feel ashamed, what i’m tryna say is that you should be proud of both, if that’s your case. I have experienced islamophobia once or twice, i’m only twelve so i’m probably gonna get more islamophobia as my life progresses, it’s bad.

@Mr K I have been living in Turkey for 21 years and I still can't tell. Western Turks tend to be European with white skin, light colour eyes and European culture (like myself) Eastern Turks have more Middle Eastern and Central Asian look and culture.

There are many schools and sportsteams with Native American themed mascots/names. Native Americans protest about these portrayals all the time to very little effect. Arabs having a race box to check on the census won't be enough ti get rid of Arab themed mascots/names :(
