Congrats on 10 years on TH-cam! I reckon I might have to start having a crack at these challenges, gives me an excuse to check out some games that I may have overlooked over the years. Not that I'll be any good but it's the taking part that counts, right? 😁

Congrats on 10 years on TH-cam. Enjoyed playing Time Pilot 84 (you missed my score), and would have liked to have got one of my boards up and running. My single layer one worked (with no sound) when I was testing, but then when I went to actually play it, it had stopped working. I have my repair bench tidied up and cleared off so they will all be going on the bench hopefully I can get a few going and then we can work out a trade for one of them for you.
I have always been pretty bad at Ghost 'n Goblins, I don't have a board of that one, I don't know whether the 17-in-1 horizontal multi would be good enough? I have had a practice game but haven't got too far yet. Got some quite good tips from your gameplay though.
Fixed two cabs last week and made magic smoke come out of another :( Progress at least.
Very cool G'nG arcade machine! Interestingly it's displaying in full 4:3. The original arcade I played back in 1985/6 had the game displaying more like Tate 1942 but the screen was not virtual, it also ran a bit slower which made the scrolling look even more choppy. With that in mind, when the game was first ported to Sega Saturn it retained that Tate 1943 look, but the later PS1 version was updated to display in full 4:3 like your arcade machine! It's a bit of a head scratcher!
Maybe revisions to the arcade board allow it to display in full 4:3 and why it now runs a little faster?? I prefer G'nG using the whole screen though. But yeah if you have never seen it, search for Sega Saturn Ghosts and Goblins and your see videos of it looking more the shape of 1942.

That’s awesome super off road is a great game
It’s got the track pak so it’s got the 80’s SR5 or the buggy
I always found Ghosts ‘n Goblins nigh on impossible, so much attacking you all the time!
I can beat that score, but playing on a hand-held. I haven't seen a GNG unit in the wild since 95😢
I remember first seeing G&G in the arcade. Its graphics and music really stood out. But my God what a coin muncher it was. I still like to play it on ports like the Capcom Collection or on the Wii VC (and MAME) - think the furthest I got on 1 credit was the dragon boss. The game is brutal.
Well you did very well to get that far, Hopefully by the end of the month I would have made some progress.

The rom I have lies under the Arcade folder, but how do I know if this is a mame rom or the Arcade rom? Thanks for all your great content.

One of my favourite arcade machines! Incidentally: there was one version of the arcade machine - I don't know which one - where you could shoot the key at the end of the levels, and get extra points. The key would then respawn again - you could only do it once per level though. I came across a machine which got played a lot - I watched others play and learned this (once; back in the day) - but I've never seen it happen again since. [It might be as the key is falling only? I've never seen it happen on any other port or version!]. Shooting left at the start of level 1 (and others?) can also (sometimes) bring something unique (your shooting re-appears at the bottom at the start of level 2). As much as I love the game It always annoys me having to replay it several times. Much like Mario ('Our princess is not at this castle') in some ways! LOL.
That’s interesting I’ll give that ago later today. It may have been a bootleg of the game you played I’m not sure how many different versions there are ?

Congrats for 10 years! I'm really excited that you've chosen G'N'G and I can see that you're learning a few tricks of the trade. Will be trying my best for the high score. I'd normally go for distance but will be interesting to add getting a high-score too!
Interesting you go for distance, makes me think your a good player then ? I used to do that with donkey Kong just run through the levels as quickly as I could just to get to know them all. No point in point pressing if you just die on the next screen. I think for the more casual player on GNG points are going to decide.

I’m still playing the switch it’s such a good console it really is, I can almost seeing it lasting another 2 years as long as the retro games keep coming.
I’ve put 8 hours into Metroid and I’m really enjoying it l, they’ve done a great job.
Not picking up any more snes games as I’ve got all the best I feel and they are so expensive now.

Ghosts n Goblins is a game that I love the aesthetics of but it was always just too frustrating for me. That music is so memorable, though.
It’s extremely frustrating but highly addictive especially going for high score. Give it a go 😉

There's a special point in the third level where ghouls spawn just off screen and if you do right+fire and then left+fire and repeat, one ghoul on each side of the screen will keep appearing. You can rack up a ton of points. But, regardless of the dip switch settings once you get past a certain score the game stops giving you extra lives.
Back in the day we tested it as teenagers and I managed to rack up 6 million points. Never did it again as it was rather tedious and breaks the enjoyment of the game.
Yea I’ve seen someone do that at the museum it’s just getting there is my problem. Point pressing is good for a challenge but I’d just like to say i could finish the game.

@@TheArcadeArchive You're half way there, you've got tap joystick technique for quick fire. Now it's just a matter of finding and remembering the sequences in the harder levels lol.
Now if you did a high score challenge on the Karate Champ Vs version, I'd be in for that. It's one of the only games I can still complete now that I've hit 50. Used to be able to complete the game or the "loop" in xevious, gyruss, Rolling thunder and time pilot to name a few.
Okay time to join in and take on a high score challenge. I have low expectations!

Near played Ghosts 'n Goblins. The only thing I knew about it was from Neighbours when Todd Landers got addicted to it and needed help :) clip can be found on TH-cam. I even remember watching it back then when it finally aired in the UK.

A great high score challenge! Not sure i'll be partaking though. The repair lab sounds really great! I'd quite happily pay for a "crash course" in how to repair boards and CRTs!

Ghouls and Ghosts of my favourite games ever and recently gave myself a challenge and beat all the levels (both loops) on Turbo mode without dying on Capcom Stadium on PS4 and uploading the clips on my TH-cam channel (this one).
I will definitely will not do it again as it drove me crazy. I was going to try and beat all the levels on the original on Turbo mode but no chance lol.

Other gameplay vids on YT seem largely MAME screen captures, which doesn't do the graphics of the era any favors unfortunately.
Really need that scanline glow off the shaded cabinet CRTs for the real magic!
I’m glad you said that as I think exactly the same. We all know the benefits of capturing these games but your missing the atmosphere of the arcade which is what I’m trying to capture.
