- In this video, I do a side-by-side comparison of a traditional pyramid weight and a sputnik sinker. The results are surprising.

I've used the pyramid weights and the thing is when it is underwater is different than where you are testing it. Underwater the sinker will actually sink under the sand after you let it sit for a few minutes like quicksand, than it actually holds tight. The sputnik on the other hand you don't have to wait to be able to tighten your line because it has the wires that almost instantly holds to the sand.
Yes agreed and why do u need to pull on the pyramid sinker anyway. Isn't the point of the pyramid sinker is to leave it alone so it can stay in place..
I was just about to buy the spunik sinker but I was reluctant to so I decided to check on TH-cam if any one makes a video on this sinker before I make a fool of my self in buying it . seeing your video you have me sold
You will not be disappointed. The Sinker Guy is top-notch.
This was a very good video bro, good job very informative, I've never used a Sputnik but now I think I might try because of this vid.
👍👍
Cool video! Thanks for doing this.
Thanks, man.
That weight we call a grip lead. It is designed to hold in a tide run. The long tail helps the weight to grip better. We use grip weights up to 7to8.oz depending on the tide flow. Tight lines from United Kingdom.
I'll have to be the old guy here. When I grew up surf fishing we basically had: 1. Bank Sinker (aka -teardrop). pyramid and Egg. So bank sinkers worked well if you wanted to move over the bar/sand or drag it like fluke fishing, 2. Pyramid (when you tried to hold the bottom and set your line, and 3. Egg when you wanted to do a little in between the teardrop and the pyramid. We selected the amount of hold based on feel and adjusted the "once" to get a proper hold. Sputniks don't let the fisherman feel what's happening, they just throw the sinker and let it do its thing. So, yes they both work, but sputniks remove some of the human aspects of fishing. It is literally the difference between the guy on the beach constantly hooking up, and the weekend warrior trying to figure out why he's not catching squat!! .
Depends what beach your at really I'd like to see you try your pyramids in a beach in New Zealand. These waves will throw that pyramid right back at you 😂
@@Mr_Shannon Only if you use the wrong # once😁
Only been surf fishing about 3 years now & I have only used the pyramid type. Give it a minute or two & it will settle in & hold pretty well. So far the the heaviest weight I have needed to hold in my area is 4 0z. Most times 2 or 3 oz is sufficient.
Ive put some thought into it, I need to try to adapt my drum rigs to work better with sputniks. Up here on the point, we need 8-10 to hold sometimes with our currents. I've had good luck with SG's sputniks, great guy.
I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a th-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.
I been getting terrible weather at Delaware lately
So I used the 2 ounz ones
My god they hold awesome
Used them in might light 8 foot , heavy 9
Nice!
@@panhandlesalt
I’m definitely going to add couple 3 to 4 ounz in future
Thanks great show
Not a great test though because you're impacting directly into the sand in these tests.
I will also drop a pyramid in the first instance but if it doesn't have a strong enough hold, then I will switch to a breakaway (sputnik)
I love that beach cart where did you get it ?
You can get them at most tackle shops. Or order online.

I just wish I didn't need a second mortgage on my home to afford a simple fishing weight.
Hello bro I'm karthi ... from India angler .. your setup very nice ...
Hello!

Great vid what beach are u on it’s beautiful

Hi from South Africa
First time I watch your channel, but just some thoughts: Why no waves man? I have never seen my sea like that, looks like a lake. The wire sinker we use when sliding a live bait, 6 to 8 oz sinker (grapnel). Pyramid in small surf 4 Oz. Bottle sinker if you want movement. My sutf kit has nothing under 3 oz. Depth of water affects how your sinker lies. GOOD FISHING WISHES
We are on the Gulf of Mexico lol. Not a lot of wave activity. But, we get strong rip currents and that is a good place to put your baits. The Sputnik weights help keep them in place.
It's not falling through a column of water?
My question is do the sputnik work well enough to justify twice or more cost
Good test but do it again, pulling with your fish scale. Then try it in water.
Why are you worried about the Sputnik sticking up when you make it very obvious with the brightly coloured tubing ?????
Just unnatural looking. Like an eyesore for fish.
The action underwater is not the same as on the dry sand..
Yes. I believe you are right. Just trying to give an overview.
So where's the fish??? Show me the fish.
Only problem with the video is.. you needed to do more fishing and foraging..
Thanks for the suggestion.
