    Thanks guys! I've watched a few of your over the top vids and this one hit home for me. I thought I had a decent turn (which I did) but I wasn't starting with the lateral movement, I was just turning my body.

    Just watched this video the other day . Struggled coming over the top for years . The hip movement seems to be helping on the driving range . Hopefully come next spring i will have mastered this movement . Thanks lads 👍🏼

    So many videos focus on dropping the club into the slot or stay on plane or yada yada... The first move of initiating with the movement of the hips towards the target naturally created the ability (for me) swing from the inside out... and great observation on the lower body slide; proves your point! Well done gentlemen, this helped me a ton!

    Thanks you for this video guys, this is one of the biggest problems I have with this in my swing. I will tend to see divots that point to the left and i might also hit the ball thin and the ball just does not travel that far sometimes. I will be trying this on the range.. Thanks again.!!

    Good video guys. This is one of my big problems, and I think I have been training this over top swing for a while. I have a few issues but I think this is my biggest one. I also over swing so as you can imagine it really speeds the slice up. Cant wait to try this at the range. I had a lesson a week ago and the pro told me to make a concious effort to tuck my right elbow in to my side on the down swing to encourage an in to out swing. I had been trying that but its taking some work, I think this could be the answer though. Thanks

    It really is magical when you synch up the lower body move talked about here with the proper shoulder rotation. The club actually does "drop into the slot" like they say. You'll absolutely pure your irons more often once you can sync up & groove the feel that they guys are talking about here.

    Thank you for this video. I have been watching multiple videos about how to stop swinging over the top and the common consensus is to start the arms first. I don’t believe in that. I generate my power from a whipping action. If I have the bottom half move first and it drops the top half into the slot it makes more sense. Thank you for the clarity.

    Great great great tips. The examples you gave of what not to do are exactly what I find myself doing when I slice it badly. It’s all about swing concept and that’s a really challenging thing to understand, break the old bad habits and then consistently pull off. Golf is a game of consistencies, I always say... or a game of inconsistencies in my case lol

    Ive watched a lot of your videos since I started playing 2 years ago, and you've definitely helped my game, so cheers for that. Over the top has been my biggest challenge to overcome, watched videos from many on every element of the downswing, but never found a solution that worked for me. Until I discovered that if I have one only swing thought -- about how the club head behaves after impact i.e moving directly toward the target for the first part. If I do that, it seems to get me closer to the correct hitting position almost by default without having to think about it, do you have a video concentrating on that?

    Hmm ... that's interesting! I've tried just about everything to stop my tendency to swing over the top (40+ years). I've had a little bit of success. One of my key swing thoughts is to strike the inside of the golf ball. I've never thought of trying that lateral, lower-body move at the start of the downswing. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the video.

    Good video guys. I've found that being completely passive with the hands/arms/shoulders on the downswing ie soft/light hands and letting my arms effectively fall from the top, and letting them follow my lower body helps stop me coming over the top. What do you think?

    My OTT swing is driving me crazy. It leads to so many pulls (with wedges and short irons) and shanks (with mid irons). I believe you guys hit the nail on the head with this video. My hips rotate too fast (with little lateral movement) and I'm left to compensate by also releasing the club early, which I find is closely associated with a OTT swing. I enjoy your videos very much and you guys simplify everything! Is there a drill that I can try to get my hips to move laterally before rotating? Thanks and keep up the great work!!

    • @monkeybreeksjov9574

      This is the best tip on TH-cam. But you got to practice it hundreds of times to get muscle memory - it isn't an instant thing. I first saw this last year from this video and I put the loads of hours in practicing to improve and it works. Stay with a 3/4 swing. Keep at it and good luck!

    I never thought I would lose my over the top downswing. I had lots of lessons which pointed to the problem but I can't honestly say I was helped with the cure. If you try to hit the ball from the top as I used to do you will come over the top. Try to imagine leaving your hands where they are, ensuring they dont move towards the ball as you transition your weight. You hit the ball with the club head not your hands.

  • @whuataaaaah

    Early in the season I tend to shank irons - especially on a full swing. I know my issue is starting my downswing with my torso or upper body which puts my club outside the ball - introducing the hosel of the club. In my mind, I am trying to concentrate on leading with my lower body as well as keeping my hands quiet. Could it also be that I stand too close to the ball? What other drills could I do?

    The number one thing that causes over the top is activating right arm at top of down swing it should stay passive until hips ,if you do activate your right arm at the top it pushes your shoulders out causeing over the top

    I suffer from this and it has stunted my development. I can't wait to try this out the next time I am at the range. One question. What happens when you are hitting driver? • @meandmygolf.
      @meandmygolf.  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Richard. Transferring weight wouldn't get you hitting down on the ball if you are in a good set up. This is why we have the ball position forward in the stance.

    Out of curiosity, do you guys have any kind of drill for casting the club when using a driver? I finally put a camera on myself and realized that on my downswing, I tend to release my wrists early causing a 'casting' effect. The result is generally a very high, weak fade. To put it in perspective, a solid drive for me is between 290-315. The casting drive however, only reaches about 220-240 and lands me on another fairway or worse. Thank you guys for all you do!!!

    I always feel the slice comes from doing the opposite of over the top if that makes sense. So I will subconsciously move more and more over the top to try and fix it and it makes everything worse. This is difficult to train yourself to do. Are there any drills for this?

  • @vantumpete
    @vantumpete 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think starting the downswing by first laterally moving the hips does help avoid coming over the top. I believe many of us trying to learn this move cannot always distinguish which body part is moving first or simply cannot hold back the shoulders/arms while shifting the hips. Thus some instructors suggest keeping the back to the target as long as possible on the downswing, which probably helps, if you can do it. if you can independently move the hips as you suggest, I think it pulls the arms down into the 'slot' without further manipulation; however I have seen many videos where the instructors say the first move should be dropping the club or elbows vertically and then moving the hips, and they say some pros do this. Do you think there is any time when that approach is helpful ? Thanks a lot.

    The fact that a golfer will have to practice a new set of manipulations (over and over again)to find the correct swing plane shows that OTT is a symptom, not a fault......If you can feel and sense the club and the clubhead, then it will naturally find the correct plane using the proper muscle sequencing...No manipulations needed.

    Swing a sledge hammer in the same manner and I'll guarantee you wont forget to properly (and naturally) transfer your lower body weight down through the target line.....
    Stop swinging that long toothpick they sold you because you thought it would give you more clubhead speed and 5 yards more in distance. It's wrecking your natural swinging motion....Only touring pros, and very dedicated club golfers have enough time in their day to groove the rhythm, timing, and balance needed to consistanly swing the new ultra light equipment offered in the pro shops today.
    Hence, the reason that Over-the-Top is one of the most common so called "swing faults" around today.
