- Ahoy there! We’re thrilled to be sharing a much-awaited progress update on Sailing, Old School RuneScape’s first new skill. The team have been busy implementing navigation, making player boats move seamlessly through Gielinor’s open ocean. For more details, check out our blog here! osrs.game/Sailing-M1-Update
Old School RuneScape is a retro game version of RuneScape from 2007 which we returned at the community's request. The community controls the developmental direction of Old School RuneScape by voting on which updates it would like to receive.
The world's largest and most popular MMORPG, Old School RuneScape has been played by over 260 million players since the 2001 release of RuneScape. Old School RuneScape unites the intricate mechanics of modern MMOs with the nostalgic point-and-click gameplay of early role-playing games.
Old School RuneScape is free to download and play, however, the game also offers players the opportunity to purchase in-game items. Please see the PEGI information page for more information: pegi.info/search-pegi?q=runes...

Is Ned going to be the Skillcape NPC for sailing?
He has to be

I think if you guys are diligent and bring in testers for feedback quite often you guys can pull it off - it clearly won’t be easy with this community

It's going to look funky when like 20-30 ships are all at that one salvage spot.
The ship wrecks could be instanced
Already looks funky when 20-30 players are at any resource node. But they’ve stated that only a limited number of ships would show at a time as one possible solution
They don't want to instance it @@SouthernWolff

The devs working on this seem very passionate and excited about this project. Makes me smile to see people who love what they do sharing their passion with us
Honestly! And looks like its going well in my opinion!
ill be honest. I genuinely really dont like how sailing is looking.
Maybe im a doubter and it will be fine. but It just, i dont like it? ahh yes' let me luff my sails and do fetch quests, but as a skill. :/ I just, I don't know what to do with this.
Ned better be the skillcape holder!
Will you be opening up more map space around or spacing out the continents a little bit to add room/scale for sailing?
I don't understand how this would even work in a crowded area. are ships going to just be clipping into eachother? are people not
going to be able to go out into the water because on day 1 it's going to be swarmed with people
Have you ever been on GE? Clipping never was a problem in RS, dude.
For me I think this will make the world feel small, because in reality it is. They only reason we felt it is big was because we couldn't actually see the other islands or anything and trips to other islands seemed a big deal (take dragon slayer for example, it seemed like you traveled quite far).
This feels like turning on noclip and flying around the map... ruins many things.
I heard them mention before they would be adjusting the distances between some islands to account for it
This sailing looks terrible... People only wanted it as a meme
@@koenwijnen8278 nah i want sailing because it has the highest potential of the other skills proposed, and will create the most new content. If youre hating on the concept of new old school content, then dont sail.
I don't think this can ever look good with the tile-based movement system RuneScape uses.
me too... i think it would look great with a tile-based system where you boat paths to the tile
It can feel good to play though, despite looking janky at times. Haven't you ever played anything older than Rs? There were plenty of awesome janky games in the 90's and 80's... like Sid Meier's Pirates, y'know up there as one of, if not the best sailing / pirate game made to this day.
@@Silent_Depths Sid Meier's Pirates sailing actually looks pretty decent. Far better than what is shown here. But who knows how this will look on release, it could be decent but so far it looks horrendous to me lol.
@@LoadingMeerkat I hope they get the feel of it right on release, but I won't mind fixes and adjustments later on. As long as sailing retains the Osrs character and isn't over designed for its purpose, it will be fine. (In other words - not too many new user interfaces loaded with information and not too complicated gameplay loops restricting player freedom of exploring all things related to the skill.)
At this stage of development things are not going to look polished or anywhere near playable, but I see the potential and what the dev team is trying to achieve. Maybe that's because I've worked on software development in past and know how it goes.
Bro literally nothing in this game looks good.
Can we get a version of the game called "Old Old School RuneScape" (OOSRS) starting with a snapshot right now?
fully with you on this
Thank you team! Glad you are taking your time with this.
I’m old enough to have seen a lot of Jagex’s “great ideas” turn to huge mistakes. But people can’t fathom others being skeptical?
did you forget that right before launch there will literally be another poll asking "should we release it as is?"
That’s crazy that Hozier is a Senior Concept Artist for OSRS
thanks for the updates yall
Don't rush this, just make it good and keep giving updates!
Looks fun but I'm very worries about how this will look with even a handfull of ships, am I even going to be able to see the water?
ocean is pretty big, if you consider on release, it will be crowded, and that will be funnier, not worst, just ppl talking shit
I doubt youll see others
@@BTChanOSRS The chaos of a new skill releasing is so much fun. I haven't experienced that since farming, lol.

how is sailing gonna help or be incorporated into the main game activities
It'll very likely become an AFK training for multiple skills, add to GP farming, a new island that includes quests as time goes on and more.
A bit like how Construction incorporated into the main game activities.
poh dock?
Is it me or does this feel more like a quest/minigame than a skill?
yeah
Its you
It is not only you.
My first though. This looks like a minigame (and not a good one). I cannot even imagine grinding to 99 using the current "systems" they have in place. Looks so clunky..
Dung had a lot more of flak back in the day because it felt so limited when launched. Here you will prolly have yhe whole world of content at launch and several activities to do. It's transformative, it's different enough to not look like a quest.
Now if we get a new version of sea shanty 2 with the skill, that would be epic
how could you possibly want a new sea shanty 2 when the current version is literal perfection

I loved getting 99 Benchsitting though!
wish it was a joke, because it looks like a joke
It should’ve stayed as a joke. This skill serves no purpose to the game whatsoever.

My nr one update that im waiting for
Second i want:
Imagine if they added wings
Like uhm
Dragon wings or fire wings or etc
Does this have its place in the game or not be honest
Nope, not as a skill at least
make it a minigame, but as a skill, i fear it will be a start of ruin for osrs
Yes it does. It’s very exciting. If any new skill was as simple as previous skills it wouldn’t get any votes.
@@CloudCollapse no it doesnt. jagex had to rig the polls just so it could pass
not like this. it seems extremely boring and tedious to level up like this. Finding shipwrecks or a random chest on a small isle. If it is going to be like this, it's going to be one of the most boring skills to train.
This looks terrible. I still don't understand how this made it through the poll.
With the three choices that were presented, they shouldn't have bothered adding a new skill at all.
It made it because people wanted it, and this looked just fine for early stages.
hope they add traveling that randomly generates an ocean or island as a form of dungeon
that would be cool
Regarding the draw distance, is there anything wrong with adding options for draw distance similar to those in RuneLite? Maybe a preset "short" distance (which is the current default for OSRS players), medium (which could be farther) and long (even farther still)? Of course, entities like other players, NPCs, and the like would only appear within the range of "short."
EDIT: Realized that I forgot to say: really happy with what I'm seeing so far! By all means, take your time! I look forward to seeing the technical alpha! And don't worry, I know that alphas aren't supposed to be the "perfect finished product" ;)
Honestly, I'm glad you're taking as long as you are. The movement was my personal biggest barrier to the idea of sailing. If the fundamental feeling of sailing is bad, all the rewards in the world wouldn't make me like the skill, so I think investing a lot of time up front on the foundation of movement/navigation is the correct way to do things. Hope it's smooth sailing from here.
Best Devs ever!. Listen to and involve players in decision making, and very upfront with what’s going on behind the scenes. Kudos! 🎉
I think before you guys release it each mod should grind it until 99 first
Just to avoid releasing a boring/slow skill like agility, or too click intensive like thieving/hunter/construction
This is completely fair, if I have to grind a 35khr skill ima be so.mad
Looks great so far guys, cheers for the update 😊
I have never been so disappointed in being a Osrs player than I have now, this should have stayed as an April fools joke and that's it. I Hate all the people that brainlessly voted yes to this garbage skill
The voters will all regret it
Quit playing and quit crying. Go play some private server or whatever. New optional content you don't want doesn't mean the game's ruined.
They really went head over heels with the puns. This whole skill is a giant pun. What of the other methods that require traveling by boat and when is an appropriate time to train the train? Are we talking right off the bat of Tutorial Island with sailing mains and is it going to require combat experience? What happens if a player lamps it to 99?
seeing creative freedom and opportunities in itself here, i want to suggest sailing being a portion of the game that we can utilize our current skills in a way dungeoneering did rewarding higher stats overall but also accommodating to lower, while also being fun, immersive, and having great opportunities for solo and teams. for sailing, i would like to suggest something that allows us to use our processing skills on our boat, land on islands to use our resource skills, combat skills for ship fights, boss fights on islands/water beasts etc, and having opportunities to do so with friends. this would probably work well with it being a skill since we would not want to make this a best in slot training for every skill as a minigame. rewards given at the end of a journey, based on objectives with possibly some optional ones for points at the cost of time which is also points? dungeoneering didnt really feel like a grind until i was well over 95 and thats not the same for any other skill
Im interested in how sailing will interact with old content. For example dragon slayer and lunar diplomacy. Certainly they're huge parts of those quests, but it could be tricky making skill requirements when so many people have already completed them without the skill.
Thanks for the progress update!
Imagine all the bugs this is going to cause on launch

@@tixerr8373 nothing? the potential with sailing far surpasses any skill they could of added lol.
@@RDB33 I really liked the skilling equivalent of Slayer much, much more than this.
Originally, the devs never expected anyone to get to 99 on anything. It's nowhere near required to enjoy the game and no one expects you to reach that milestone with any skill because of the time sink.
How do i get my runepouch back after deleteing it in emirs arena? its not in the search
This is either going to be really cool or flop instantly. I hope the devs really take their time and do this well.

That wont happen. Maybe on release but thats already accounted for.
Can we fix the ship we bought in dragon slayer?
Still cant believe theyre making an old playground rumor real
Take the time to get it right! If your delay to it right it’s delayed for some time, if you have a bad launch, it’s remembered as a bad launch forever!
i still can't believe this is actually going to be a 'thing'
really hoping sailing and the new engine come hand in hand - you mention draw distance (and didn't mention weather effects) which I believe (hope) the new client rendering will address
reminds me of somewhat puzzle pirates. hope theres multiple combat ship pvp/pk with good insane loots in the open seas!
Make it a mini game to train all the skills we already have
more a mini game than anything. doesnt even fit the world size like u can see in the video
Love the potential for this.
Give us a good, detailed ship combat system. Different cannons, loadouts, PvP, etc. make positioning matter.
I think the potential to “infuse” special attack weapons into the cannons would be an amazing item sink (I.E. imbue a cannon with a dragon warhammer to give it a unique special attack).
I would also love the capability to build a dock at my POH, where my ships could be stored.
This stuff probably won’t happen, but I would love to see them float some creativity with this release!
instead of a dock attached to your poh... how about a POH teleport to a small island surrounded by docks and people running around gathering logs, rocks, making planks to fix/upgrade their ships.
Love this little dev updates

I really hope you there's going to be a way/option to allow your ship to coast in a direction, I feel like having to not only constantly click your next visible navigation spot but _also_ constantly click to trim the sails is going to get kind of annoying after a while. That way you'd only have to click the water to turn your boat if you need to and you can focus more on operating/skilling other things while on your boat (it would also make it feel more like you're actually piloting a boat too).
crew=auto pilot, likely
Crew can also trim the sails
Crew = no xp drop :P
This is exactly what I'm talking about.. this is what's going to make people hate this more than agility or runecrafting or any other skill u have to constantly be running around.. its just boring and annoying
They already confirmed that this is on their radar some time ago, don’t worry
Why not combine sailing with shamanism. We could enter one of those pocket dimensions initially proposed, where we sail in unexplored oceanic world(s) that have aspects of shamanism. The catch is that you can't teleport inside the portals except to get to a lobby area that then connects you where you started to return to main Gielinor world.
First comment I see with the most sense and an actually idea. Yes, I like that one.
I still think the current Sailing icon is perfect!
I feel like players voted to waste the mods time for a few years, and when it's time to vote, yes or no will not only drag it on but say no 😅
Honestly I feel like people voted for this one because the other two were going to be too impactful. So they picked the meme skill. If the devs can make this skill not feel like a waste of time then massive kudos to them
I hope people vote no
I feel like you are extremely againtarded

PROPS on DOUBLING DOWN on the joke :D
Reminds me of the website banner in 2009. Everyone thought sailing was the next skill. I remember the video of someone outlining the new skill cape on the websites banner😅
Assuming you need to utilize construction to build certain things on your ship, does this mean that player owned homes will have a feature where you can create a dock for your ship and edit it like you would your POH?
I'd like if they made a floating POH out at sea
@@dotti1203 Yep, and with POH teleport just being a right click to decide between house/dock
I wonder if they’ll find a way to increase the value of gold bars with the upcoming skill. After all, what is a pirate without his gold?
I hope Sailing introduces training methods that combine with other skills like Fishing. I hate training Fishing, not a fun skill to train. Doing it alongside Sailing might make it more bearable.
I'm so thankful for the way they are going about this.
Taking their time, keeping us updated, and going really in depth about what the skill can offer.
I can't wait to explore the seas and find all sorts of treasure and new PvM and skilling activities.

I feel like this skill is a bit too ambitious, perhaps should have just been a minigame or something
woh so i wonder if they will implement a way to alternative alching with large loads of bronze, iron, steel etc and it work in the same way to selling at a general store works' with the more you sell the price goes down, but it could be a fun way to make money with large loads of alchables and maybe you get a little bit more money for a giant inventory then you would alching. but the cost it takes to sail them to the destination brings it back down to what you would make had you just alched them or maybe not if you Dont allow it noted where it has to be loaded at port in a box.
could be really cool. im excited to try it all out i hope they add many little non game breaking ways to make money with sailing.
Looks like the fishing/mining cape to me lol
Looks like a bunch of chores to do
Would be cool to see a multitude of titans throughout the ocean. Think the animated movie Hercules or lotr mountain scene. A whole subset of bosses with solely untradable drops, a cool looking bandos equivalent etc is the idea
Thanks for the update on Sailing. Seen a lot of doubters recently, so it’s nice to see the progress being made. It’s extremely important that everything is done correctly for this launch. Take all the time you can get
This stat has no place in this game. Doesnt work either
Port tasks sound like a great area for expansion. Things like fixing or building NPC ships, fixing the dock, scrubbing off barnacles, etc. There could also be tasks for finding and salvaging a shipwreck, or slaying sea monsters.
Cant wait for this to release
Looking very good thus far! Sailing is shaping to be excelent!
Obviously it needs a lot of work but seems the devs understand that unless it's a full skill at launch then people will hate it. I like the ideas so far though
Unless it is not a skill and becomes some other form of additional content, i.e a minigame, questline, etc, then people will hate it*

This looks amazing so far! Keep up the great work, can't wait to see the skill ingame!
Would love to see a new slayer monster or boss released with sailing that has a very high (93+) Slayer level.
I know we were teased a red kraken (sea kraken maybe) but its been 5 years since Hydras/Alchemical Hydra were released.
I feel like sailing would be an excellent way to release this.
Guess ill just look forward to Old School Old School Runescape at some point after all this.
fully with you. time to take a big great break
This content looks really cool, (and I don’t mean to be a jerk just genuinely asking) why can’t this just be content? Why does it have to be a skill? It feels like all the things that might be possible on a sailing ship could instead give xp in other, current skills and then I can’t see anyone that wouldn’t be excited about the new content
Because we voted for it to be a skill 4head.
Agreed. Like I can't see the huge difference of lower or higher levels in sailing, I get that it unlocks certain things, but those things are targeting other skills... like what exactly will sailing have that will be sailing only, new boats and islands doesn't quite grab me. 90 % of people will probably rush the 99 and walk away
What is anybody losing by making this a skill? I don't understand the negative feedback, considering it was polled and doesn't take anything away from the core experience of the game. If someone doesn't want to deal with sailing, they can choose not to participate.
Because sailing is an actual skill irl? It's something you start off as a learner and slowly progress your ability to eventually master. How is that any different from firemaking, cooking, fletching, thieving, woodcutting... literally any skill in the game?
Here's a better question, what's the problem with a real skill being a skill in the game? While you can use other skills while sailing, there's still a ton of actual sailing only progression. Learning to use new ships, learning to explore more dangerous waters, learning to utilize ship combat better, learning to race, learning to plunder shipwrecks, getting better and delivering more difficult cargos, etc, etc, etc. There are also plenty of cases of previous skills crossing over one another. I don't understand why attaching the word 'skill' to a piece of content makes everyone lose their minds. Especially one that is very clearly a skill by every definition of the word.
@@ricksanchez5595 "90% of people will rush the 99 and walk away"
Congrats, you described 3/4 of the skills in osrs.
how is navigate a pun? it literally means the same thing in both contexts
Navigation/walking on boat floor looks great, water might need better tech tho
Being able to skip and take shortcuts with sailing by taking a trip will surely make the skill valuable.
Skipping the sail should not be added, yall wanted to stare at a sail boat for hours to go places, that's what you're getting
@@ricksanchez5595 in fairness, it will probably take less than 5 minutes to get from the bottom of the map to the top. OSRS is not as big as you think, only is so because we can only walk/run places.
