What would be crazy, is if you guys could create a "Grand Line" type area on the seas, where it would be like the wilderness (going here would be optional and not forced). You could have battleships and fight to the death, dropping whatever you have on you/inventory, but also if there is any storage on your ship, it can be raided like pirates would. Don't know the mechanics of boarding another ship, but I think this, along with tasks, treasure hunting, salvaging, ship building, etc. could make this skill one of the best in the game! But some sort of PvP with loss of loot would be amazing. The PKing community could be revitalized by this
@@KurkiKuriiri They could even roll out updates to include "The seven seas", all of which are risk areas. Some have multi and can include clan wars with multiple members on a ship with different delegations, others are single and can be more individual. The possibilities are endless really.
Regarding the draw distance, is there anything wrong with adding options for draw distance similar to those in RuneLite? Maybe a preset "short" distance (which is the current default for OSRS players), medium (which could be farther) and long (even farther still)? Of course, entities like other players, NPCs, and the like would only appear within the range of "short." EDIT: Realized that I forgot to say: really happy with what I'm seeing so far! By all means, take your time! I look forward to seeing the technical alpha! And don't worry, I know that alphas aren't supposed to be the "perfect finished product" ;)

Assuming you need to utilize construction to build certain things on your ship, does this mean that player owned homes will have a feature where you can create a dock for your ship and edit it like you would your POH?
This content looks really cool, (and I don’t mean to be a jerk just genuinely asking) why can’t this just be content? Why does it have to be a skill? It feels like all the things that might be possible on a sailing ship could instead give xp in other, current skills and then I can’t see anyone that wouldn’t be excited about the new content
Agreed. Like I can't see the huge difference of lower or higher levels in sailing, I get that it unlocks certain things, but those things are targeting other skills... like what exactly will sailing have that will be sailing only, new boats and islands doesn't quite grab me. 90 % of people will probably rush the 99 and walk away
What is anybody losing by making this a skill? I don't understand the negative feedback, considering it was polled and doesn't take anything away from the core experience of the game. If someone doesn't want to deal with sailing, they can choose not to participate.
Because sailing is an actual skill irl? It's something you start off as a learner and slowly progress your ability to eventually master. How is that any different from firemaking, cooking, fletching, thieving, woodcutting... literally any skill in the game? Here's a better question, what's the problem with a real skill being a skill in the game? While you can use other skills while sailing, there's still a ton of actual sailing only progression. Learning to use new ships, learning to explore more dangerous waters, learning to utilize ship combat better, learning to race, learning to plunder shipwrecks, getting better and delivering more difficult cargos, etc, etc, etc. There are also plenty of cases of previous skills crossing over one another. I don't understand why attaching the word 'skill' to a piece of content makes everyone lose their minds. Especially one that is very clearly a skill by every definition of the word.

I really hope you there's going to be a way/option to allow your ship to coast in a direction, I feel like having to not only constantly click your next visible navigation spot but _also_ constantly click to trim the sails is going to get kind of annoying after a while. That way you'd only have to click the water to turn your boat if you need to and you can focus more on operating/skilling other things while on your boat (it would also make it feel more like you're actually piloting a boat too).
This is exactly what I'm talking about.. this is what's going to make people hate this more than agility or runecrafting or any other skill u have to constantly be running around.. its just boring and annoying
Why not combine sailing with shamanism. We could enter one of those pocket dimensions initially proposed, where we sail in unexplored oceanic world(s) that have aspects of shamanism. The catch is that you can't teleport inside the portals except to get to a lobby area that then connects you where you started to return to main Gielinor world.

Im interested in how sailing will interact with old content. For example dragon slayer and lunar diplomacy. Certainly they're huge parts of those quests, but it could be tricky making skill requirements when so many people have already completed them without the skill. Thanks for the progress update!
It's fantastic to see progress, but this has raised my concerns even higher. The core actions of interacting with a ship don't look fun and I feel it's being ignored in favour of the activities that can be made from sailing. Completely missing the fundamentals. It's like designing mining by focusing on motherlode mine and blast mine.
Even if they mess it up and its not very fun, i bet it'd be 100 times more enjoyable than clicking the same teak tree or clicking the same rock, or same fishing spot for 500 hours.
the fact you're so persistent on going through with this when so much of the community is against it is insane. I understand that you invested time and money into this, but dont forget that the goal was to add new content. You still have time rework this into a mini game and people that want this will still be happy with the new content. You can easily make both sides happy if you change course. If you actually go through with this, and half the community leaves, remember that so many of us tried to warn you.
seeing creative freedom and opportunities in itself here, i want to suggest sailing being a portion of the game that we can utilize our current skills in a way dungeoneering did rewarding higher stats overall but also accommodating to lower, while also being fun, immersive, and having great opportunities for solo and teams. for sailing, i would like to suggest something that allows us to use our processing skills on our boat, land on islands to use our resource skills, combat skills for ship fights, boss fights on islands/water beasts etc, and having opportunities to do so with friends. this would probably work well with it being a skill since we would not want to make this a best in slot training for every skill as a minigame. rewards given at the end of a journey, based on objectives with possibly some optional ones for points at the cost of time which is also points? dungeoneering didnt really feel like a grind until i was well over 95 and thats not the same for any other skill

I really worry that the release of sailing will become the new "eoc" type event for osrs. That people in the future will look back and say "sailing release" was when i stopped playing". Maybe we should give players the option to fully opt out of this skill and not be forced into it? I feel like when adding new content like raids for example it doesn't change enough of the game for it to feel less old schooly as people don't have to touch that content at all if they choose not to but worry a new skill completely shakes up everything and removes that last little bit of the game that stays true to OSRS. I think as we get closer to the release of this skill you are going to see the playerbase split into 2 groups one that supports sailing and another that is strongly against it and threaten to quit over it's release and beg for another version of osrs
Why would this stop anyone from playing? It’s a complete non-issue. EOD completely changed the core of the game, this is simply a boring skill that you can totally ignore and wont change the PvM meta.
Honestly, this still looks terrible. It just doesn't fit osrs, I can't believe it was voted in. I think it would be fine as a minigame akin to dungeoneering which it looks like anyway, but making this a skill just doesn't work.
Why are you guys not trying summoning again, but have it be more balanced? There is so much that you could do with summoning . Sailing will be cool too if it works.
Love the potential for this. Give us a good, detailed ship combat system. Different cannons, loadouts, PvP, etc. make positioning matter. I think the potential to “infuse” special attack weapons into the cannons would be an amazing item sink (I.E. imbue a cannon with a dragon warhammer to give it a unique special attack). I would also love the capability to build a dock at my POH, where my ships could be stored. This stuff probably won’t happen, but I would love to see them float some creativity with this release!
instead of a dock attached to your poh... how about a POH teleport to a small island surrounded by docks and people running around gathering logs, rocks, making planks to fix/upgrade their ships.

A bit like how Construction incorporated into the main game activities.
well it will give you new methods to train fishing, you can do combat with other ships and maybe a new style of pking, maybe in the long run even a whole new continent to explore with no banks where you MUST put all items you need/get into the ship and sail through dangerous waters to get safely back
@@007kingifritquit making up random bs in an attempt to save face for this corporation. They have announced nothing like what you said, and sailing looks trash.
@@jaykelley103 making up ideas is exactly what makes a new skill work, its not up to them to announce it, its up to us to dream it.
that's why you're not smart enough to want a new skill, you don't dream.
I remember when this skill was an april fools joke 😂
in RS3 it still is and even has a joke quest written around things like that
I loved getting 99 Benchsitting though!
wish it was a joke, because it looks like a joke
It should’ve stayed as a joke. This skill serves no purpose to the game whatsoever.
@@zach071591Like firemaking, what's your point?
Ship pvp north of the wildy?
Regarding the draw distance, is there anything wrong with adding options for draw distance similar to those in RuneLite? Maybe a preset "short" distance (which is the current default for OSRS players), medium (which could be farther) and long (even farther still)? Of course, entities like other players, NPCs, and the like would only appear within the range of "short."
EDIT: Realized that I forgot to say: really happy with what I'm seeing so far! By all means, take your time! I look forward to seeing the technical alpha! And don't worry, I know that alphas aren't supposed to be the "perfect finished product" ;)
That’s crazy that Hozier is a Senior Concept Artist for OSRS
Obviously it needs a lot of work but seems the devs understand that unless it's a full skill at launch then people will hate it. I like the ideas so far though
Unless it is not a skill and becomes some other form of additional content, i.e a minigame, questline, etc, then people will hate it*
reminds me of somewhat puzzle pirates. hope theres multiple combat ship pvp/pk with good insane loots in the open seas!
poh dock?
Assuming you need to utilize construction to build certain things on your ship, does this mean that player owned homes will have a feature where you can create a dock for your ship and edit it like you would your POH?
I'd like if they made a floating POH out at sea
@@S2yay Yep, and with POH teleport just being a right click to decide between house/dock
Because we voted for it to be a skill 4head.

That way you'd only have to click the water to turn your boat if you need to and you can focus more on operating/skilling other things while on your boat (it would also make it feel more like you're actually piloting a boat too).
crew=auto pilot, likely
Crew can also trim the sails
Crew = no xp drop :P
This is exactly what I'm talking about.. this is what's going to make people hate this more than agility or runecrafting or any other skill u have to constantly be running around.. its just boring and annoying
They already confirmed that this is on their radar some time ago, don’t worry
Why not combine sailing with shamanism. We could enter one of those pocket dimensions initially proposed, where we sail in unexplored oceanic world(s) that have aspects of shamanism. The catch is that you can't teleport inside the portals except to get to a lobby area that then connects you where you started to return to main Gielinor world.
First comment I see with the most sense and an actually idea. Yes, I like that one.
Yeah the water looks so bad the offical HD mode will definetly be needed here.
how do u fit 2000 ships there
That wont happen. Maybe on release but thats already accounted for.
It’s just water agility.. also what happened to re-polling shamanism vs sailing? Seems like you guys really want sailing and will force it into the game no matter how bad the feedback is.
I think the potential for new storytelling on islands and the seas is insane
Can we get a Soggy Baguette from the salvage crates?
Great job with the update! Definitely looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you. Take your time and make it awesome!

For the love of god just make this a damn minigame, every little concept of this looks scuffed beyond belief and I can't see it looking any better at final release when there's polish on top. Said it then and i'll say it now, this poll was rigged due to how much work had already gone into this project pre poll.
Sounds accurate sir
I was all for a new skill but this looks like shit. Looks like a minigame, and a bad one. Unfortunate
Out of ALLLLLL the possibilities of a new skill, and THIS is where we're at... Not the slightest impressed

@@kxngklizhy9185 There is a vote before it releases, if half the community doesn't want it then you shouldn't be worried.
I actually cant wait, it seems so fun to do
I feel like this skill is a bit too ambitious, perhaps should have just been a minigame or something
Are you suggesting that the core gameplay of mining is fun?
What are you actually disappointed by and what do you want?
Even if they mess it up and its not very fun, i bet it'd be 100 times more enjoyable than clicking the same teak tree or clicking the same rock, or same fishing spot for 500 hours.
@@lewishendo9328 he doesn't even know, he's just complaining like the typical osrs player lol
Okay but mining isn’t fun neither is agility or runecrafting.
the fact you're so persistent on going through with this when so much of the community is against it is insane.
120k out of 160k players voted yes dude. Only like 40k voted no
Im really enjoying how this has turned out!! Cant wait to sail!!!
then go to rs3 and test it( btw it failed there too )
seeing creative freedom and opportunities in itself here, i want to suggest sailing being a portion of the game that we can utilize our current skills in a way dungeoneering did rewarding higher stats overall but also accommodating to lower, while also being fun, immersive, and having great opportunities for solo and teams. for sailing, i would like to suggest something that allows us to use our processing skills on our boat, land on islands to use our resource skills, combat skills for ship fights, boss fights on islands/water beasts etc, and having opportunities to do so with friends. this would probably work well with it being a skill since we would not want to make this a best in slot training for every skill as a minigame. rewards given at the end of a journey, based on objectives with possibly some optional ones for points at the cost of time which is also points? dungeoneering didnt really feel like a grind until i was well over 95 and thats not the same for any other skill
I still think this thing is an april fools joke

Maybe im a doubter and it will be fine. but It just, i dont like it? ahh yes' let me luff my sails and do fetch quests, but as a skill. :/ I just, I don't know what to do with this.
You can already opt out of any skill by simply not training it. Entire builds exist based on this concept lol.
Why would this stop anyone from playing? It’s a complete non-issue. EOD completely changed the core of the game, this is simply a boring skill that you can totally ignore and wont change the PvM meta.

I think it would be fine as a minigame akin to dungeoneering which it looks like anyway, but making this a skill just doesn't work.
you would have complained about construction being a skill too if it came out in 2025
Why are you guys not trying summoning again, but have it be more balanced? There is so much that you could do with summoning . Sailing will be cool too if it works.
i still cant believe this is real.
Sounds awful
This one is best left in the drafts
