Old School RuneScape is a retro game version of RuneScape from 2007 which we returned at the community's request. The community controls the developmental direction of Old School RuneScape by voting on which updates it would like to receive.
The world's largest and most popular MMORPG, Old School RuneScape has been played by over 260 million players since the 2001 release of RuneScape. Old School RuneScape unites the intricate mechanics of modern MMOs with the nostalgic point-and-click gameplay of early role-playing games.
Old School RuneScape is free to download and play, however, the game also offers players the opportunity to purchase in-game items. Please see the PEGI information page for more information: pegi.info/search-pegi?q=runes...

Genuinely think that most of the people claiming that this is "RS3 all over again" or "this is the worst combat update the game will ever see" simply dont understand what the changes are. This is good for the game and will help bring a LOT of underused or "dead content" weapons up to par without changing the BIS weapons that already exist
Yeah I think this will add more value to other weapons
People are so braindead.. smh
I’m a new player who was already using logical elements against things and was shocked to find it that, for some reason, all monsters had physical weapon type weakness and resistance but no elemental weakness or resistances. It’s literally a mechanic in the game for melee already being spread to range and magic, which makes a lot of sense
@@mimivrc4148 Welcome to Gielinor, brother
You're ignoring the biggest criticism. Most people don't want to make the game significantly more complicated at low-mid levels. People don't want to get punished for not having 3 different ranged weapons and knowing the exact weakness of every slayer monsters.
Been a huge fan of this ever since it was announced. Anyone who thinks this is too complicated doesn't realize that the game secretly has always been this way, it's just getting more fleshed out. It's not like EoC and more like the jump from pokemon red/blue to gold/silver, where they split the SPECIAL stat into SPECIAL ATTACK and SPECIAL DEFENCE.
That is a GREAT way of putting it.
Well said. Too many people with room temp iq doom-saying it’s eoc all over again.
Go ahead and convince me
@@SanJo2MD
I don't think this going to complicate things or confuse new players due to the fact that what they are proposing is a simple version of the resistances and weaknesses you see in RPGs. It is one of the oldest tropes in video game mechanics, and in the update log they already outlined a possible way they can this information easily accessible to players and promised to minimise the need to check the wiki.
@@SanJo2MD Convince you on what? The defence changes? That's the video's job and I think it makes a pretty good case, especially the part starting at 4:00

Genuinely surprised at the volumes of people thinking this is the next "EoC", breathing life into the standard spellbook and giving more options to approach PvM without affecting power creep? Can't wait :)
People who think this looks like rs3 have not been on rs3. I tried to play that but it has millions of dumb skills in combat that make it play like wow. This is what people hated I imagine, not more existing content having a use by adding these logical separation of range and magic, like melee has already, that should have always been there
@@mimivrc4148that is one thing that people hated. People also hated that existing gear was altered in crazy ways that didn't make sense to people who had played RuneScape as their only MMO.
Because it is literally one of the things that came alongside EoC and it worked out so well for RS3 they're now moving away from it.
Secondly your question is so condenscending it only shows how biased you are. Most people I talk to have their minds blown on how fun Shadow is to use. It's powercreep, it completely changes meta and yet it's the most fun we have in this game.
You go enjoy yourself grinding harmo staff so you can water surge red dragons while we play actual strats.
@@janitorizamped As someone that plays both games and continued playing RS3 in the immediate aftermath of EOC I have never heard any sizeable group complain about style weaknesses. It was always the action combat and/or the lack of options to afk combat after the changes.
Luv u big boi
I was literally just thinking how the combat could be more dynamic without losing any oldschool elements. Looks dope
@@bduckett2522Do you have any original additions to the conversation, or are you just going to say the same thing on every comment because you're salty for no apparent reason?

This is gonna be so good for the game if implemented correctly. It’ll open up brand new reward spaces for raids and bosses, incentivize a more diverse roster of weapons and gear.
"if implemented correctly"
Jagex is incapable of that.
I always wondered why there were different elemental spells but no benefits to them so glad to see elemental weaknesses being added
It was thematic initially. They were before rune was a thing if I remember, and had such high damage to compensate for super high costs.
Amazing to see you guys partnering with Coxie again - he was fantastic on the leagues video and I'd love to see him back more
He just needs to change his name so we can take him serious

Was a little nervous/confused at first but you explain the changes well and it makes sense. Looking forward to hearing more.
Strangest episode of Funny Feelings ever... In all seriousness these rebalance changes are super healthy for the game. Coxie and his team did a great job as well!
"a bright and logical future" for a game where logic = not having hotkeys cause it increases quality of life too much
Real talk
Or user macros; like every other MMO with decent QOL.
I want a hotkey that allows users to switch protection prayers
Im glad that yoyre looking at the standard spellbook, but one issue that isnt mentioned is the tick delay on autocasting.
Right now they’re talking the simple stuff, but good catch. Hopefully that gets fixed, maybe when wielding specific elemental staffs?
I am very much looking forward to these changes, open up that design/reward space!
The grouping of same-tier standard spells got me feeling all warm and tingly inside.

@@bduckett2522 LOL, I love finding you in these comments. Cute little man trying to be relevant
This is such a good idea - I was switching between styles for Perilous Moons at the beginning, bringing stab, crush, slash weapons. Then after a few days, it was just use the whip for everything and bring a spec weapon. Looking forward to this!
I actually really want this, Slayer would become more technical which I enjoy.
Actually good changes, hope to see this in game soon I always wondered why we had elemental spells when it didn't seem to matter what spell you used vs different elemental monsters. Excited to see how the meta evolves.
At first sight these sound like awesome ideas! Looking forward to seeing how they work out
This looks and sounds great. It's adding a bit of realism into the game without change the BIS meta
Broo that osrs wiki damage calc is the best!
I like that this promotes spreading out your gear tabs instead of just tbow, scythe, and shadow. It's good to create more spaces for good gear. I don't need to whip every task. As long as we keep the attack speeds and tick system how they've been then I don't see how this makes the game any less Runescape.
I literally always thought in my head to use what things felt like they should have been weak to since I played as a 10 year old. It made the game more immersive, what else is the point of RS?
This is great! I love the update! Great job Jagex mods!
This seems really good as at the moment the power creep in weapons without having billions of GP or atleast 500m in mainly the magic category is insane, as there’s no really good intermediate mage setup Cus if you ain’t in full ancestral + sang or tumeken you are in Ahrims with a trident and is quite literally the difference between double damage
sounds awesome, good meaningful changes
Love a lil Coxie vidya! Positive comment
Love it. I would just add some monster weakness to wind spells, otherwise they remain useless.
I love it! Had to take a break to for some work projects. Can’t wait to get back to OSRS.
This is going to ruin my strategy of using the same weapon and/or spell on everything
@@bduckett2522you’re miserable.
someone needs a hobby@@bduckett2522
LOVE this, makes way more sense
This sounds like the best way to bring combat up to contemporary standards by introducing more variety in terms of damage output while avoiding power creep. If you can't move UP in terms of damage, you have to create a way to widen OUT the variety of gameplay and this is the path forward to do so in terms of combat.
Cannot believe how good this change is. Possibly one of the best updates the game has seen in a while. Thanks devs, masterpiece!
Great proposals all round
This is an evolution of combat without the shit. The game needs it. The only thing people hated with EoC were abilities, and were never getting those. Chill.
All this does is open up possibilities to revive dead content and that's always a plus
Well that and summoning going along with it…god summoning really was just “here’s an extra backpack”
This would be a true evolution of combat! I've always thought it was silly how you could just sling fire spells are fire giants like nbd. Looking forward to these changes!
This is all so awesome, I really appreciate powered staves being knocked down a peg.
Wow making ballista relevant ?
@@bduckett2522Brother he used an ahk herb cleaning script and it was like 5 years ago move on.
Love the proposed changes, one thing I would suggest is the light ballista being in the light ranged split category to give it some use. If it stays in the heavy category with the heavy ballista surely the heavy ballista will outshine it, rendering it unused.
Light or medium yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Would love to see the ballistas get some pvm love
I thought the light ballista was always ment for pures to use and heavy ballista for mains. It is still a ballista and shoots javelins so I think renaming the items is easier, such that they still apply to the heavy ranged weakness.
I like the idea of opening up the variety of weaponry that has effectiveness! It adds to the open-ness of the world, and makes the combat triangle more of a combat there-dimensional triangular prism!
This sounds like a great idea keen to see what else you muster up
Sounds like a nice update, keeping the meta relatively unchanged while adding more viable options if you don't have the "right" gear. would love to see more on it.
@@bduckett2522You’re miserable.
Am genuinely excited for this update and how it will expand the reward space for ranged and mage gear in future content.
Excited for this update! Love having more options for damage and making unused items and spells, especially in the mid game, viable.
This is great
This update sounds amazing. I love that attention is being put to mid and lower level options with elemental spell changes. My only feedback would be to also take a look at the host of mostly useless weapon types (longsword, battleaxe, 2h sword, warhammer) that were nerfed with the weapon speed changes of RS2. This feels like the perfect time to reflect on ways to give them uses as the combat system as a whole gets tightened up, making for an even better/more varied early-midgame experience
Way to go OSRS Wiki for the damage calculator for new patch BEFORE IT COMES OUT! Being the best community support you could ask for!
Im actually very excited for this rebalance. This is also the best video I have seen on the topic and its explained extremely well here.
hopefully this is the eoc runescape always needed. Fixing standard magic and defenses, without drastically changing monster levels, attack styles, armor and adding a dumb hotkey bar to add abilities like every other mmo
Runescape doesn’t need an eoc. Such a dumb mentality
@ovs4744 just let 3/4 of the spellbook rot as dead content? How is that good

Anyone comparing this to EoC has no idea what these changes really mean or what EoC actually was
anyone not understanding fundamentally changing the combat calculations for type weakness is an evolution of combat. has no idea what they are talking about.
It was literally past 1 of the evolution of combat beta.
@@straight2thepoint790that’s not what people refer to when they talk about EoC in RS3. EoC is mainly focused on the addition of the ability bar forcing a WoW-like combat system into a game built on its .6 second game cycles that always felt like it just didn’t mix for a lot of people. The Defence changes were secondary in most minds and if you asked people who dislike EoC what they think about the Defence changes as a separate change from the rest, it’s usually pretty positive
@straight2thepoint790 bruh you gotta check your brain
As an EoC beta tester, it was largely devs with no PR ability telling players to eat shit.
There's no reason to be against these changes. They bring to life so much content and give so many mid/late game items actual purpose. They may not be amazing everywhere, but items will actually have proper niche's. It also allows for better leveraging of gear to break into a new tier. Fantastic and simple concept. Thank you osrs team

Always great to see a new osrs youtube legend starring in every video.
Love thia idea, we already have monsters weak to crush, stab etc so it only makes sense to include magic weaknesses too and each spell is useful, rather a stepping stone to using your best fire spell unlocked.
Im wary about the ranged option but i do conpletely get it. Would mean that we get more BIS ranged gear other than a twisted bow, handcannon anyone for BiS heavy ranged option?!
I just wouldnt want to see gear having a % reduction of cetain spells because it would make things so confusing personally.
Having gear sets give a 15% reducion to earth spells and 65% reduction to fire spells, would be far too confusing. Id be happy just keep it at weapons for now.
I love this idea especially since it incorporates elemental runes finally!
Honestly i'm super exited to see this in action! It's been long overdue in my opinion and is a very welcomed addition to the game and can really breathe some variety into the combat meta!~
as an og player that stopped when EOC came out, i love this. it could bring much needed variety into the current meta. just remember not to overdo it, i wanna keep playing this game

Changes like this are actually huge for the future, im very excited for these "Project Rebalance" Changes throughout the game for 2024.
OSRS this year and hopefully onto 2025 is about to be so hype with updates like this on the horizon.
EDIT: Imo I really do love shit like this, huge W for spells and future range/mage gear
Melee is already pretty good as it has 3 "styles" enemies can be weak to , and i.e items and gear can be made for stab/slash/crush
VS Range and Mage, until these changes, were only just either weak to range or weak to mage (as stated in this vid, some mobs were invisibly weak to certain spells, but by just a double damage) And it was gg, they had no styles or weaknesses like Melee has with stab/slash/crush DEF/ATT bonuses.
This allows for more specific mage/range upgrades, increasing only Light/Med/Heavy ammo accuracy/damage, and Mage upgrades can now include more Spell specifics for certain niche situations/Boss encounters/Skilling. (as i believe in specific Skilling gear/spells usefulness for Skilling as well is quite on the WEAKER side at this moment in time for OSRS, this opens room for maybe items in the future that buff Skilling in diff ways via more Rewards or XP, etc)
This update will be the huge PvM meta shift we NEED before any new prayers or items come into the game (even if and when they do, this update will allow more room and leeway for those prayers/items/systems) and updates like this are first and for most important for the future foundation!
This elemental aspect also can change the game with new weapons, where they could potentially have elemental aspects to them. Which is neat.
I saw this as the implicit direction of the new sunlight/moonlight crossbow bolts and I'm really happy to see it being implemented more broadly. Like imagine being able to imbue existing weapons to do elemental damage at the expense of a raw damage output debuff?
I think that would be really cool too. The idea was posted many years ago as well as players having an elemental affinity as well. Hope to see it come true.
I would love to see these changes
So does this also include working flat defence bonuses, like introduced with Nagua's/Perilous Moon bosses, into other existing NPC's? And will weapons like regular claws, get some changes similar to the Sulphur blades?
This is how you keep a game alive!
