Hard to justify using barrows gear for bossing/minigames when most things in the game are trivialized by prayer. "Oh I could use the extra defence" vs "Oh my prayer just blocks 100% of the damage anyway". Exceptions apply
We were absolutely soloing KQ after barrows release with veracs. It was hard, you needed very high stats for the time and "max" everything including stupid stuff like Clank's gauntlets, but it was certainly done. You got maybe 1 kill a trip but getting a d-chain drop was the best part of being a kid during that time.
Yes but most of this video is around straight after barrows release. This was absolutely not a viable method for 99% of players at the time ESPECIALLY straight after release.
Doom scrolling is when you're constantly flipping to new short-form videos, typically on platforms like Tiktok, Reels, and Shorts. In the process of constantly looking for that dopamine from a video you like, you lose track of time.
You didn't mention on the dust devil section: but their drops back in 05? SUCKED. The -ONLY- worthwhile drops? A battle/mysticstaff and the body. The droptables for most mid-level monsters got massively buffed in OSRS. So it's not like you could even farm dust devils and make your money back in supplies... You lost money unless you got a chain, most of the time.
And yeah, most players would never attempt Kalphite Queen due to the "immediate" drop on death mechanics back then... plus, the best strat (veracs) didn't exist until after barrows, so pre-barrows KQ? Near impossible.
Some of my favorite nuggets of osrs content is the stuff that was made 2007 and earlier that still has major relevance today and isn't just dead content, i.e. dks, quests like rfd, dt, mm, and clues. But Barrows to me is the perfect example of this. Such a great variety of possible unique drops and is popular with players of a wide level range. Very accessible content that doesn't really get easier with better gear just faster.
Back in the day, we would spend hours gearing up to do barrows. Your hart would be pumping hard the whole time. When you open the chest and everything starts to shake... oh man the nostalgia.
I was doing low level barrows at the start of my account, had a frw dozen kc and got cocky. Trying to save on prayer pots (my only real cost) I turned off my prayer when i landed the last hit on Dharok. But it wasn't the last hit, he had 1 hp left. Then he did what Dharok does and hit me for max damage and kills me instantly.
Hehe, especially easy mistake to make back then since he would still be "redbarred" at 1hp. I almost forgot that that is somewhat of a modern-ish update. I don't remember when they ensured no red bar unless 0hp, but I think OSRS got it maybe in 2014 or something.
The story you told of Billy is exactly how I did barrows back then and I also got nuked by dharok and devastated and didn't play for like a week. It was the first time I died ever aside from messing around in the wilderness with no real gear as I was super careful all the time back then because of how hardcore the stakes were. The worst part was even figuring out how to get back quest items that were bis back then like klank's gauntlets and having to go through the underground pass again which was way, way more annoying than it is now.
As a kid, I wasn't a huge fan of Barrows. The ghasts always went through half my food, I wasn't skilled enough at the time to really understand the mechanics (I even used poison to kill them, while sitting and waiting for them to die), and it was an absolute pain to get to. Now, it's one of my favorite bosses to kill while chilling.
The barrows was not only such a great update for end game, but it also had mechanics that allowed for low levels to complete runs even if you were sacrificing a lot more money wise in resources. I still made struggle runs to get items in just zammy robes + slayer dart, and it worked! Barrows still rules!
Man, you mentioning Blue's being 9m honestly made me regret some decisions I made even harder.. Back in 2005 I had a couple hundred mil and was umming and ahhing over getting a party hat and mask set for the longest time.. And then I focused on School and work and forgot all about RS until 2011.. When I came back, they were over 100m and my cash stack was even back then considered to be chump change..
I can remember doing Barrows in 2006 before the rework where the brothers wouldn't pop up on the screen all the time and the rooms were similar to any other underground cave instead of the Sleske powered rooms existed. But dying was so unforgiving so you only bring enough stuff you were willing to lose. And no one knew about the 83% to 88% for no bolt racks so every run was 100%
Degrading armor was a good choice! I didn't like it on corrupted dragon or pvp equipment, since I believed it would crumble to dust. Not sure if that was the case.
Correct. There was no repair options, it would go away completely. But the coolest part is that they were nonmembers. No spec attack obviously but if you pk’d with that in a nonmems you were a god
It's almost as if, if someone spends an insane amount of time grinding for something, developers probably shouldn't just casually throw away that investment. It seems that's a lesson Jagex is struggling to hang onto. But still, it's crazy how Barrows is still relevant and useful to this day (even if a lot less so than back then).
The core development comes from the linage of DND style early “MMO’s” that predates the whole World Wide Web. In essence that’s exactly what RuneScape is/was. An open world “dungeon” to explore with friends, raise levels, explore, go on quests, socialize. Go to the danger zone to have a battle of egos and strength. Risk it all for glory. That’s what made rs so popular among friend groups. Moving away from that imo is what has made the game boring and grindy. Everything is a competition now that no one actually cares about your achievements. I partially blame the new internet too lol.
I don't recall barrows ever being hated, but then again I was mostly hanging around national communities back then and haven't been reading too many of the English forums. Don't recall the items not degrading at first either, but maybe it's due to same reasons as well.
My clan gifted me a veracs set and I had to grind my defense to wear it. So worth it! It’s an upgrade from my dragon armor for some purposes, but I still use both. 😊
I remember in the early days of Barrows and player Gravestones where your Gravestone had a limited duration based on which one you had and after it ran out it went back to people being able to FFA your stuff. But other players could "Bless" your gravestone to extend the duration. One of my few early memorys of runescape is a bunch of people camping a gravestone at the Barrows chest. To this day i have no idea why but after getting the final brother and looting my chest i popped a prayer pot and blessed that gravestone. I to this day remember the censored rage spam those people waiting on that gravestone heaped on me.
Then there are others who feel the barrows degrading slowly over time led to them making every item degrade as a "money sink" that even they eventually realized wasnt good and have almost stopped doing in favour of GE tax and death costs.
I remember spamming the doors once the brother was already spawned to get another brother. pretty sure you could get as many brothers as you could until they just killed you.
Barely related but I like to do something I like to call "Legacy bossing", when you kill a boss, you are only allowed to use gear, spells, prayer, and supplies that was in the game *before* the boss was added. It's like a little taste of nostalgia. Without going into specific details, my set up for melee is dragon with a whip, range is black d'hide with a crystal bow, and magic with mythic with a ancient staff.
lol apparently your "warthunder" comment got so downvoted i had to scroll and scroll and scroll just so i could find it knowing it was here, and also downvote it.
I didn't remember people hating on barrows at all when it came out. It felt exciting and mysterious - getting a full set was extremely difficult though. I was going for guthans and legit couldn't find anyone with the other pieces.
Something that everyone claimed, esp. merchants was that d chain was supposed to be the ultimate gear. They said it was never supposed to be replaced, which was why it was so expensive. When people pointed out that eventually d plate would drop, they said, no way, it was meant to always be the best.
I used to train my melee only on dust devils. Pulled a dragon chain body and sold it for soooo much back in the day. I didn't even know they could drop it back then.
I remember doing barrows and got a guthans spear and sold it for like 7m I think. And realized I could merch Karils bows for way more money without the headache of trying to do barrows runs. I remember getting up to 250/300 bows at once and selling them off for 50-75k profit each. I would do that all day/night long until I had enough for all the party hats, Santa’s etc
God I feel like I'm reliving this exact same update with the new Boss Dungeon that just came out on RS3; Sanctum of Rebirth (ToA equivalent). New T95 magic weapons with a pretty common drop rate along with a t100 upgrade that isn't too much harder to get either. This update completely outclasses Nex: AoD and Vorago which drops the lot harder to get T92 and T90 equivalents respectively. Now Magic is just stupid strong and easy to come by the BIS weapons.
Torag's armor came in clutch for me when I was poor in 2008-2009. Nobody wanted it cause the set effect was worthless, but because of that, it was cheap, even though it had the best defense stats in the game. And by that point in the game, we had the armor stand in our POHs. I had a decent smithing level so even repairs were cheap.
Early 2000s is when me my brother and all my friends in hs played, I remember when barrows dropped. It was super tough. We used dragon halbreds to safe spot the kalphite queen before that got patched. But it's how a few of us got d chains
so there was a quest in runescape old school version called olaf's quest, and when it came out there was this one spot in the quest that made players rage and go to the forums and rant about it, its the part where u have to walk on the spot with the barrels and use the key on the gate, i was wondering if u can do a documentary video like u usually do about olaf's quest, i feel this would be interesting
Man I remember release day. I got a war spear, Karil top and Torag hammers. Nobody wanted the spear. Sold the Karils for 8m. And traded the hammers for 3 whips. Few days later after hype blew up, the spear sold for dh set
I remember being the ''safespot'' guy for random noobs then stepping aside when Dharok was low health and after they died I looted their grave. Then I proceeded to loot the chest too. Now with the safe kiddy deaths it's no longer possible
I can get calling it a "safe kiddy death" but suppose you lag out and die in gwd or other instance bosses and there was no grave. And if you lose everything upon death, the average player isn't as willing to do harder bosses. I think the grave system is fair. Losing 100m+ because internet outage or something shouldn't be penalized.
Nobody actually knew that barrows didn't require magic boosting equipment for a very long time, even well into OSRS release. At level 1 magic using wind strike, you have a higher hit chance on Dharok than you do on the chicken on tutorial island.
I had a really good low p pot method for barrows within a year of the release kept it on the down low then stopped playing then I used it a ton when osrs came out. slayer dart + entangle you get about 4 attacks then you run around the coffin and wait till you can entangle again then I only needed p pots for karil and ahrim
First time I found barrows was by accident. Killed 4 and left. Came back like a year later to open the chest and got ahrim's robeskirt. 3.1mil at the time to spend on construction and waste it all in one go. When they first popped up they seemed easy. But I died to Karil I think or Dharok. Didn't know to kill them all so just looted 4.
Shout out if you were alching your yew longbows inside Dharok's tomb, while also typing red:@@@ on top of other players so they couldn't see their HP bar
Ahh yes I remember teleporting to varrock, banking at varrock east bank and walking all the way back with ghasts taking half my invy. Sometimes not finishing all the brothers in 1 invy
Still remember getting guthan spear and it was worth millions. I had no fckin clue what i was doing half the time and doing the whole run through rhe swamp up until opening the chest was so fcking long and punishing with the shit gear at the time
now that i think about it barrows was a really bad update because it release the strongest gear in every attack style and in nearly every important slot. best top, bottom, helm for ranged, melee and magic. imagine if they released a raider where you could get a full set of primal, sagittarian and celestial (rs3 dungeoneering) from 1 raid. you would consider that too be a dogshit update.
Colonello. Thank you for these videos along with the time and effort that goes Into them. I started playing In April 2001. These days when I get on I'm able to tele basically anywhere In the game. I have unlimited run energy which wasn't even a thing on classic. I can try end game bosses and If I die I just pay a small fee and get everything back. I have the ge to trade on without the fear of being scammed unless I'm trading for a rare which I can't afford so I don't have that worry. Anyways what I'm trying to say Is that I often forget just how punishing yet fun Rs used to be years ago. BTW when you mentioned the d chain It reminded me of when d meds and Sq shields were first released. I sold everything I owned to buy a d med for 3.5m which was a lot of money back then. I was the very proud owner for an hour when I gave my email out to a random player who keylogged me lmao. Also I remember when hitting your first 10, 20 and eventually 30 was mind blowing. 😂😂😂😂
I just remember reading the guide on sals realm and deciding it would be too difficult lmao. Ironic because at the start of OSRS, barrows set me up. Got 3 guthan spears lol.
Barrow was the reason why I quit rs for quite a while. I was fighting Dharok with cannon and I somehow got 1 shotted. I lost everything. I remember logging out and telling myself that it's ok and trying to forget about it.
This just is not true, people loved barrows when it came out, the most anoying part was getting there, long walk. All the other negatives you mention are only bad from todays pov, we are incredibly spoiled with qol updates, but back then it was peak content. Nobody cared about balance back then, it was a different time in gaming where nobody even knew the meta.
what's funny is the degrade mechanic is pretty irrelevant these days. Like I don't even think about having to repair it until I go to sell it back. Which is another thing to consider. The GE has made things so smooth that you don't really need to pay attention to things like that so the degrade cost becomes pretty irrelevant and sometimes the market shifts enough that you sometimes make enough profit to make up for the repair cost
I click on the “osrs podcast” and I see you on there! You have no idea how excited I am about this, I have been watching you from day one basically and I am ecstatic to see you in a podcast style video. Absolutely my favorite content creator, keep crushing it. You’re doing an amazing job! Seriously
Now that I think about it, Barrows degrading system also helped the economy because the sets are money sinks. Because you need money to repair them, it helps cycle money out of the game. Of course today, 350K for a full repair isn’t THAT much. Still, just an interesting thought.
Today it's easy to make that kind of money in an hour of combat because of all the drop tables. Back then monster drops were basically all junk except for one super rare item that you would make profit off of.
The fact Barrows is still relevant (and is still rewarding) all these years later is a feat in and of itself.
also has to do with how well they handled power creep in osrs
ya even in rs3 they still get used not as much but for mid/low lvls :)
Barrows could use a small buff to the amount of runes we get there
@@TYy-n4m I think the diary rewards offer up to double the amount you get.

Back in my day I had to walk backwards uphill through the swamp for 50 miles to get to Barrows.
I was there aswel.
Yep build a bridge and run out of run twice and lose half my food to ghasts
Whilst performing a handstand?
And we LIKED IT that way.
And then try to melee all the brothers, eventually die and lose all your stuff.
This was literally my main money maker back in 2005. Didnt really know how to play good but i was amazing at waiting for people to die at barrows.
The game felt real when you actually lost items, eh
@hellowill the adrenaline rush you used to get when you were about to get sent to lumbridge was unreal. I haven't felt it much elsewhere in life tbh😂

Prayer pots were unironically more expensive than barrows upkeep back in those days.

Losing 100m+ because internet outage or something shouldn't be penalized.
when your scam doesnt work anymore :(
Well, I was one of the people who did get that Dragon Chain Body from a dust devil. Good times
Been playing this game for 20 years and just now learned you can have a cannon inside of Barrows... I don't remember ever seeing that done lol.
Nobody actually knew that barrows didn't require magic boosting equipment for a very long time, even well into OSRS release. At level 1 magic using wind strike, you have a higher hit chance on Dharok than you do on the chicken on tutorial island.
This shows how much harder rs used to be. Kinda miss it, kinda dont lol
I had a really good low p pot method for barrows within a year of the release kept it on the down low then stopped playing then I used it a ton when osrs came out. slayer dart + entangle you get about 4 attacks then you run around the coffin and wait till you can entangle again then I only needed p pots for karil and ahrim
“NOT YOU” at Torags had me floored 🤣😂😂
NEW COLONELLO VIDEO BAYBE!
The idea of desert treasure being “extremely late game” is hilarious and so nostalgic
Shout out if you were alching your yew longbows inside Dharok's tomb, while also typing red:@@@ on top of other players so they couldn't see their HP bar
You're a hero m8, these vids keep us sane
Barrows easy? It used be an incredible achievement to just walk there. I would never have dreamed of completing it back then.
Ahh yes I remember teleporting to varrock, banking at varrock east bank and walking all the way back with ghasts taking half my invy. Sometimes not finishing all the brothers in 1 invy
Made my first 10m doing barrows when I was young looting other people's stuff who died
Billy was a Pro - He only forgot the spade ONCE.
Still remember selling a d chain for 25m and buying a santa hat back in the day
rs was the shit back then losing ur crap on death was a mechanic i miss to this day.the game has been baby proofed
Looool me feeling the brutality of getting a dragon chain body on my 3rd ever dust devil kill in 2023…. Rest in peace 40m. You will be missed.
Bro I remember walking from kharyll area all the way through the swamps and across the bridge to get to the barrow brothers
I have no idea what you're talking about I just really like your voice and editing style
Ahh talking through the route from east varrock is nostalgic for me. All that effort for one chest, and praying for a guthans spear.
Barrows equipement is strong even now. Its crazy how cheap and easy to get it is for its bonuses.
This happened when I played, it confused a young me because the value of items changed so much. I switched around that time
That drop rate 1/32k for chain body reminds me of killin iron and steel dragons for visage back in the day seeing the visage was amazing as a noob lol
