Canals, Boats, Water & Terraced Cottages - New Layout Part 6 - Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

  • More progress of the new layout this week.
    After mulling over the road tunnel for a couple of weeks, I decided to switch back to the original plan - a canal tunnel. It’s not something I’ve modelled before and I fancied trying something new. I based mine very loosely on Standedge Tunnel in West Yorkshire, with both the cottages by the water and the mooring area to allow boats to wait before passing through the tunnel taking inspiration from this site.
    I started by cutting away the road and adding a some plasticard. After adding the canal walls made from Wills stone sheets, I painted bottom of the canal a dark murky brown. I built the landscape up either side using foam board (left over from the platforms) the filler gaps with Sculptamold. Once dry, I painted the towpath grey.
    For the water, I used good old PVA glue. The expensive water products might look a bit better, but are 20x the price and I’m not convinced they look 20x better…… I had a few bubbles appear once the PVA was dry, but I reckon this makes the water actually look more realistic.
    Once the water had dried I used Geoscenics road ash to create the towpath and blend this into the road. This is available here:
    www.geoscenics...
    Next I put together a Craftline Models canal kit. Very quick and easy, and they look pretty good. I just need a driver and some passengers for it now!
    After this, I scratchbuilt some terraced cottages for the left hand corner of the layout on the road that leads down to the station. These were built from Wills stone sheets using the usual method and painted using emulsion paints.
    And lastly of course, I added more trees.
    As always, thanks for watching.

    Gorgeous. Simple as that. The canal was a pleasant surprise - I'd wrongly assumed that it was a road going through that archway, but the canal is so much nicer to the eye.
    I love the music you use - some of it sounded like the tremendously 'English' score composed by Russell Garcia, for the 1960 movie, 'The Time Machine'.
    Thank you for sharing; you have a tremendous eye for detail, like the rogue clumps of grass by the canal towpath.

    I think the canal and boat is a good choice. With your scenery, the tunnel would have to a long one. For your time period, doing a long tunnel for a road would not be an economical choice. But for a chanal, it would pay for itself. Thanks for sharing 😁

    The canal and boat caught my eye immediately. Perfect for your scene. I live near the Erie Canal, but it is nothing like English canals and narrowboats.
    Because it was inexpensive and quickly built, does not mean the boat cannot be improved. Several companies offer detail parts for boats and ships. Door and window.frames of paper, or very thin card would add some relief. You might check out some of the techniques used by boat and ship modelers for inspiration.
    PVA does tend to yellow over time, but that just might make it look more like murky canal water.
    Some modelers here use a liquid acrylic floor polish called Future to get a shiny water surface. Ripples and waves can be painted on using artist's acrylic gloss medium.
    Superb railway, and getting better all the time!

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Steven. Good suggestion, something to keep my busy later down the line when the layout is a bit more developed. I’d like to build a couple so I can switch them out.
      Good point on the PVA as well, I’ll have to keep an eye on it - but I’ll looking to the Future stuff you mention.

    • @stevenkarnisky411
      @stevenkarnisky411 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lewis, I did a bit of research on "Future". Looks like it has been discontinued, although it exists in other products: "The original Future floor wax was very similar to a clear acrylic paint, according to Make magazine. The floor wax became popular with makers of models and figurines as an inexpensive substitute for clear acrylic paint. When Johnson & Johnson discontinued the brand in 2008, it incorporated it as a component of certain types of Pledge (labeled as "with Future Shine"). This same formulation is sold outside of the United States under a variety of names, such as Klir, Sols Plus and Pronto Wax." Acrylic gloss medium may be the better choice now. Sold in art depts. and stores.
      Why not send pictures and video to our Model Railroader Magazine? It is much less USA oriented than in the past, and your style of modeling would be a delightful change from the usual fare! You have already done all the hard work making videos.

    Just moved attention from loft to garden, new fencing and shed, carefully thought about, for fresh venture to build a sort of nevelator in the lounge then 4” diameter bored out wall, for a 40 foot run to shed. Still debating single or twin line. Your layout being a great inspiration. Love the undulation you’ve built in that you obviously envisaged long beforehand, which is so important and works so convincingly. As I’ve said on other comments, admire your simplistic detailing, done so well, without adding the gut wrenching clutter ie parking lots, heavy industry, cars, buses and out of place, badly glued figures, unimaginable fishing scenes or anything from the wrong era like a highly polished flashing police car. A great test for me is if I watch a layout in action and feel an inner peace or slight nausea. Inner peace ✌️

    The canal idea is pure genius. Two little tricks though : one, use rather Vallejo Still Water or the woodland scenics similar stuff (murky water) rather than PVA to avoid bubbles. Also, I found that some PVAs can get rubbery and even yellowish with times while resins don't. If you had still bubbles with the resin, simply blow with a small solder torch or lighter, a trick that doesn't work with PVA if I am not mistaken. Second trick to spread the gravel, cap the container with the end of an old nylon sock which will act as a sieve and ensure a more regular dispersion of the gravel. And also, the staired cottage behind the station are also a nice way to suggest the layout is bigger than it is. All in all, this really is getting better each time and show that you can do way more than you think on a small layout if well deligned like your extension to Yorkshire Dales.

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Eric. Good point and suggestion on the yellowing PVA over time, I hadn’t thought of that. I do have some WS murky water left over, so could always use that on top of needed. Nope definitely doesn’t work on the PVA - I tried it! Glad you like it so far, thanks again.

    Absolutely brilliant!!! Both your layouts are simply fabulous! Considering they’re both set in the Yorkshire Dales, it might be a nice/funny idea to create a two-story stone building to the style and name of ‘Skeldale House’, the veterinary clinic from James Herriot’s novels (if you haven’t read them I strongly recommend doing so!) and the inspired TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’! You could park an Austin 7 (I think that’s James’ car) out the front too! The first novel gives a great description of the house if you need one! Thanks for the entertainment and stay safe!!

    Great idea for your tunnel : I was expecting everything but a canal ! It's all what I love : original, surprising, and a typîcal english scene. UK modellers tends to model canals on their layout, it's a nice and original tradition I'm glad you have followed.
    For my own projects, I have the idea to model a canal but one that would go OVER the railway line. I had made some research and I have been surprised to see how shallow UK canals are : you have to take 2 to 4 ft in account for the draft of a longboat ! I yought it was deeper...
    The two houses on the slope is also a great idea. Simple and well thought to fill a corner with something nice. Simple but both original and efficient, your signature.
    Keeep the good job done, it's a delight to see your work, and take inspiration from it.

      Thanks Olivier, glad you liked it! I’d never actually thought of that, but now you mention it that does seem very shallow. Makes modelling them a bit easier I guess. I like the idea of a canal bridge going over the railway.

      Oliver,
      The classic canal boats you find in the UK are called narrowboats. The last time we had longboats in this country was probably in 1066.

      @@YorkyOne Thanks for the precision, I had not remembered the right word ! I just rememvered it has something to do with the size...
