As one who straddles both model railway and Warhammer hobby, great to see Contrast paints being used for this type of paint work. They’re liquid magic for painting people/crews!
I never thought too much about figures on a layout or how much they would add, my goodness, having watched your highest standard of artistry I now get their need. Excellent attention to detail as ever! Thank you.
Oh wow, and I was thinking you couldn’t add any more detail to the layout! Absolutely brilliant Lewis well done. My partner said, that the figures obviously don’t do a lot of work, they’re always standing around talking 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hi Lewis, it's high time for a written sign of life from me again✌️ THANKS for your fantastic modeling!!! 😉 "👍" ❤ Greetings out of my private little Z-gauge workshop for individually 1by220 refinements, Olli
Great work. Good figure sculpts make painting so much easier! I would recommend a matte varnish on top of contrast paints, the ink in them can be a bit glossy for most clothing.
Hi mate. Love the layout and fully agree about the Modelu figures-the best out there. Great job painting them-here’s a tip if you want it, no worries if not. When you’ve finished them, try giving them a coat of matt varnish to take away the shiny tinge, gives a more natural finish.
Those ModelU figures are excellent. As I'm on the other side of the world, I will probably join their Patreon to get monthly STL files to print myself. Getting them posted is just too expensive and I've got 2 resin printers sitting here looking for more things to do.😊 Nice painting job Lewis and I agree contrast paints are great for figure painting. Cheers!
they do sell a range of STL files without the patreon sub: i got both sets of loco crew off them a few weeks back... and then discovered I needed a new LCD for printer ! :( (guess what this weekends job is!)
It really is guess work as to what colours of clothing they wore in the days of steam. There seemed to be well faded blue and charcoal colour and they wore a cap known as a "grease top" because it was shiny. It's very difficult to find good colour photos from the steam era. I have two books both from the western region with every photo in colour from the 50's to the end of steam on the western in 1965. On photo taken at Challow with the fireman on a 47xx and he's wearing a white shirt with a west coat over it. His sleeves are rolled up. Signalmen didn't seem to have a uniform for from one of the books is a shot inside Reading West signal box in 1963 and they're wearing casual clothing of the time. Preservation crews aren't good for they often wear safety day glow orange which doesn't suit the 50's and 60's. Those Model U figures are very good Lewis with loads of detail and you did a great job in bringing them to life. Aren't you a lucky boy that they sent them to you. Roy.
Fantastic figurines and you did a great paint job. I like to change scenes and also do stop motion scenes so I use transparent plastic to glue my figurines on, but glueing them directly to the layout is of course a more realistic effect.
@@MouldyRaspberry If you would consider stop motion: it's a very pleasant addition to train videos, but it takes steady hands 😁 mine are sometimes a bit to shaky, causing a scene to be re-recorded. But it's very satisfying to have that extra life in a video. I use a compact camera with stopmotion function, but there are alternatively also smartphone apps available.
Lovely video, than you 😊I know the guy who modeled for the fireman that you put in the Tank. That's his standard pose when on the footplate. Fill the box up, get the valves lifting and pose for any photos he can get into lol. Well known for it hehe
@@MouldyRaspberry You're more than welcome. I love watching your videos and the superb standard of your scenery construction. As for the lad, it was commonly known as 'Doing a Drew! (Not his real name by any means. More like a nickname at the time lol)
Another great video, I must try those contrast paints. Here’s a little tip, when painting figures I mount them on a wine bottle cork with blue tack or plasticine. Makes life a little easier to paint them.
love the figures , make s a change from all the Dapol ( Airfix / Kitmaster ) ones from the 50's ! so much better if your figures look like they are interacting - instead of standing in random places !
A signalbox needs a Signalman. The one on the bottom step looks like he might be a relief-man, for a shift-change or something. All steamies need a footplate crew. Other than that, Misselthwaite is already looking attractive. What would you say was your best trait?
Thank you for posting this informative video. One point, Railwaymans uniform overalls were always dark blue, steam loco crew, pway staff, s&t staff, works deparment etc. Even into the modern age right up till orange coloured uniform became compulsory for a lot of staff.
Those figures are really excellent, way better than the Preiser ones. To paint them though I prefer using the Vallejo model color acrylics or the Ammo by MiG figure paints (also acrylics) and using a wet palette to keep my paints fresh and fine marder sable brushes for detailing. (I'm an avid historic figure painter - mostly WW2 and Napoleonic Wars - which explains my experience with painting OO and HO figures as well as 1/35 scale or even bigger 1/16 scale ones). Also Ammo by MiG releases now acrylics for model railways, even for British trains, and for buildings and figure painting. Those are quite good, like the Vallejo ones , and both mix well together.
Very good looking . But with running a layout in N Gauge and 70 years old I wouldn’t be able to paint them . But that is one of the advantages of the bigger Gauges . You have much more detail .
I just got a bunch of train crews, which I need to get around to painting. I was thinking that the steam crews might be a little more sooty? Diesel crews not so much.
INSULFROG suits me too and my results are not quite at your level but after seeing the little black on yours makes me feel like that some of us love the simplicity and spend more time on our scenery. Splendid as always I do Hope you get a chance to take a peep at some of my vids some day in the mean time I have surprise coming up next week involving figures. They really do bring the scenes to life. Keep the mould growing. Stay safe.
Thanks Kev. The Citadel paints were: - Guiliman Flesh Contrast paint for the skin - Black Templar contract paint for the clothes - Kantor Blue for the clothes - I also used a brown wash called Agrax Earthshade Then I used a Humbrol brown for the hair and suitcases and other stuff they were holding.
Wow! They really wanted you to review their products Lewis! 😂 That's a hell of a hoard... Hate to think the value of all that for a mere mortal like myself... I haven't even thought about adding figures yet... Although I got the rubbish Hornby Cows in a field now at least 👍
You’re right, they’re not cheap but are the best there is (or that I’ve seen anyway)! Nothing wrong with a Hornby cow I think I have some of those as well 😀
@@MouldyRaspberry they do look great Lewis, I think I'll keep an eye for some in a sale. Does make you wonder whether larger manufacturers might come along and improve their figures.
Hi Lewis, those figures really are amazing, I don't have any but do like the ones you have. Like you said they are really natural poses aren't they. Mind if I ask whether the paint you used was an acrylic, as it seemed to work well with those figures. All the best and thank Dave.

The model railway gods have blessed us with another great video from Mr mouldy raspberry. keep up the great work

Any figures I've seen other than these break the spell of realism. Expensive, maybe use fewer, but these really make you believe.
I agree 👍🏻 I guess you get what you pay for!
That a great investment by Modelu, they'll sell a lot more after this video. Well done Lewis, they look so good.
