  • Hey! I love aqua bags but found they were too expensive so I made my own.
I'm Personal Trainer and use boxing to get my clients fit. I used to fight and have competed in MMA and other Martial arts. I started combat sports in my late twenties so not as a youngster and think they have loads to offer men, women and kids as a way to keep super fit, create discipline and of course keep you safe.
I was so fed up of the ever changing social distancing rules!!! I had to do something about it!! after working on many different ideas I came up with the perfect solution that would actually cost me a lot less than building a normal home office gym.
So I decided that I would design and build an all weather gym which would be safe to train 3/4 people and of course I could use it anytime I wanted without any rules to follow.
With huge waiting list during lock down the project took 7 months to get to a point that I could start using it! But it was worth the wait!
Nothing beats training in the fresh air but the wind and rain is another matter. This design takes the chill off and the rain off and is perfect for training. I love it! It's the best thing I ever did!
when I first thought about building a gym I absolutely knew I needed boxing punch bags but they take up so much room and move about so much you have to give them a lot of space.
So I knew I was going to ditch traditional bags for the new aquabags that are so popular today.
Aqua bags under the mates come in great designs but I thought they were pretty expensive!!! So I decided to make my own. I found some great videos on TH-cam - thanks for the tips, and took a few ideas from a few different contributors and made my own version. I made this video to show you that anyone can make these aqua bags even a girl like me haha!!
I use the following to make the bags:
    polyform buoys A0, A1, A2 and A3
scaffolding board is support across the rafters
7-in 4-hole cast iron ceiling hook for each attachment
Each chain is made as follows from the buoy upwards:
12 mm D shackles to attach to the buoy
    10 mm quick link connector
    8 mm swivel eye
    6 mm quick link connector
5 mm chain adjusted depending on the ceiling height
5 mm D shackle to go into the ceiling hook
A0 size can take a smaller D shackle, it can also be connected with a strong rope but using a swivel eye is recommended because it helps rotation. This size is full target process and from head movement.
A1 size can take some shots is good as an uppercut bag these are 12-in aqua water bags which I think are called headhunters
A2 is equivalent to a 15-in aqua water bag, some movement but not too much a good or round bag.
A3 is equivalent to an 18-in aqua water bag, very stable but the water absorbs the energy meaning that your hands keep safe.
The hardest part is definitely filling with the hose. remember to drill out the inflation-hole in the aquabag because it will be too narrow and because it is only suitable for air inflation. something like a 7 mm drill bit is required. Don't damage the thread for the bung to go back in; it's pretty easy to do. I'm sure the nozzle that you find is 7 mm at the opening because this will help with filling. I've seen some people simply add a nozzle onto a thinner piece of hose and use a cable clip to stop the water coming out of the sides. I didn't try this method but kind of wish I would have. I think water water will come out regardless so be careful how you fill it, use a bucket and only fill very slowly. Use a 7 mm piece of tubing and vacuum suck the water out so that it can drain away when you want to deflate the bags. Or obviously take them off the hooks, but the beauty of aqua bags is that they are easy to hang because you can fill them in situ.
You need to wear gloves with some decent padding such as 16-oz training gloves to hit these bags. I would not recommend you use your bear knuckles. They work better with the padding in the gloves, You can get them to ping nicely.
