After this year, the muscle car is gone - the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger will be no more. The S650-chassis Ford Mustang remains the only muscle-car (or pony-car) game in town. So we lined up the Dark Horse S650, with its 6-speed Tremec manual transmission and ultra-grippy Pirelli Trofeo RS tires, for a drag race against the brand-new Lotus Emira and two BMWs: the B58-powered Toyota GR Supra 6-speed manual and the S58-powered twin-turbo BMW M2.

the fact some 2GR-FE engines are being tuned upwards of 700... 800... 900... and some even knocking on a 1,000 horsepower is incredible in itself. It's quite a potent engine, if I will be honest.

The muscle car comparison, though shown first, was an afterthought. The Camaro's last year in production is 2024, and this year for the Challenger.
The production values of Hagerty vids rare extraordinary, but then vanity channels like Petrolicious also show lots of pretty pictures of cars we’d want to own. While in the end the Petrolicious vids are reverential and therefore boring, Camissa keeps you guessing all the way to the end.
The difference with Hagerty’s vids is Jason’s non-reverential perspective. Sure,Henry Catchpole knows his stuff, but I always get the impression he is soft-pedaling his impressions, careful not to displease whoever supplied the car. Not so with Camissa. He calls them as he sees them. And he is 20 times more appealing as a character than nearly all the competition. Goes double for Schmee.

It’s bananas 🍌 how fast that Camaro SS is with the 10 speed! That car is amazing 🤩 when you consider how well rounded it is. Great track car, road course, auto X. And it can really dominate on the drag strip in the quarter mile! Much respect ✊

The only thing is it’s the slowest of the 3 if you use the other 2’s autos(at least fords) not sure on the challenger.
That mustang 6 speed is trash. Put a 10 speed in the race and it kills the Camaro. My naturally aspirated 5.0 10 speed went 11.97 in the 1/4. 11.2s with a tune and tire that’s it.

the 453 hp in the m2 is such a conservative number too. Most of them dyno-ing like 470 to the wheels. Very powerful car, the s58 really is a gem.
Too be fair it is de tuned from the m3/m4 who put out similar numbers

Problem with Lotus is they never make the claimed power since the 2ZZ days. A decent remap will do wonders. :)
The problem with BMW (if you can even call it a problem) is that they have consistently been underrating their engine power figures since they were building radial engines in WWII. I don't know offhand what the S58 puts out, but it's a lot more than what the spec sheet says. @@BaeHarrier
@@dougrobinson8602 Correct! The wifey has got an M140i and it put out 385‘ish hp in stock guise. Now 460 with just a little bit of tuning. No wonder the B58 is the same in this respect.
But it‘s a fact: The supercharged Lotus specs are always lower than claimed. Don‘t ask me why… it‘s just a shame. They‘re very capable machines chassis-wise.

The 60k was initially for the base i4. The FE was always the top priced version. Yes, they did up the price 15k 😢

I feel like the 6th generation Camaro didn’t got enough praise that it deserved, it’s the first muscle car in recent years that can actually go toe to toe with the finest European sports car in every performance measurement. Till this day, 7 years after its debut, it’s still competitive. Truly a perfect end to this legendary name.
Ironically I think the reason why it didn't sell was because it was more sports car than muscle car.

The ss 1le got plenty of praise. But the mustang Mach 1 is just faster in a straight line and roadcourse. 😊
The fact that it was so much smaller than the 5th gen hurt a lot. People didn’t like the smaller cabin and even smaller rear seat and trunk opening. It made it less practical to use as a daily driver.

The M2 is significantly underrated on power. If you were to check the dyno results on all cars in this race it would have significantly more power

Wow! Hagerty simply threw drag racing videos to another level. The aerial images along with virtual tech stats, like the finishing line, and a pinch of fun makes it very engaging to watch. 🏁
I gasped when that Emira jumped off the line and had a car length on everyone. I gasped again when the BMW looked like it found an extra 100hp somewhere and gapped everyone. Great video, team!
BMW always misrepresents its weight and horsepower figures (i.e., reporting lower than actual hp and higher than actual weight) so the hp/weight number is usually bogus -- apparently they like all the publicity that an "over achiever" gets? There are several videos documenting that with scales and dyno on newer models. Also with a turbo and electronics all kinds of games can be played with horsepower v. rpms.
The M2 have been dynoed alot and usually produces the claimed engine HP at the wheels.
@Mandolin1944 Claimed HP ratings are a result of testing in the "worst case scenario", to ensure buyers will have access to the rated power 99.99% of the time. Every manufacturer does this, but it seems like BMWs are especially able to squeeze out some extra juice if you feed em cold air and high octane. Very impressive ECU programming.
Having had several BMWS I'm not surprised in the least.
However with these sports cars on the track it begs the question where is the Vette ????

I simply love the fact that you described the complications of shifting some manuals into gear too quickly. A lot of people don't realize that some transmissions just don't like to be rushed.
I have a '22 Mustang Mach 1, and the Tremec does NOT like being slammed into 2nd. Every other gear is fine, but it's very particular about the 1st -> 2nd shift. I will say however that the Tremec is far, FAR better than the MT-82 transmission that was in my 2015 GT.
@@Biltware I actually have a 23 mustang GT with the MT82 manual transmission and this transmission does not like to go from second to third very quickly. I can't tell you how many times I've been locked out because I've tried to shift way too fast lol

It's just a shame some must end up in cars like here.
Who wants to slow shift a sports car, it has NOTHING to do with drag racing either as said here, sprinting down a twisty British country road also includes fast shifts....especially if it's from 1st to 2nd.

Camaro is such an under rated car
this video made me buy my G87 M2 !! It does everything so well... It's a wonderful daily driver, it's a super fast straight line car, does cornering like any M car would, it's got massive cooling for track days and the brakes are just unbelievable for a stock vehicle !!

Yeah...and the reason is no more new ones, my '02 SS had been going up slightly on BBK which means private people will definitely pay more, it well happen to all late model Camaros in a few years especially if they're kept well.
SS1LE was the best driving car and bang for the buck track car I could imagine. Understand that some people don’t like the creature comforts bc they weren’t great. otherwise a super fun car and great performance value.

The Camaro's advantage over the Mustang and Challenger has always been handling, not straight-line speed. It won here because the Mustang had a manual instead of an auto.
There will no doubt be lots and lots of comments about the jaw-dropping production values that went into this video. I agree with all of them. Jason's humor, the footage, and the clever editing make this some of the finest content on TH-cam, in Any category. Kudos to all involved.

I will have to say, I was impressed by Hagerty’s road side assistance. I left a car show about a month ago and my alt went out and had a break down. Those guys were rapid fire and had me out immediately! Most impressed I’ve ever been with an insurance company.

Great hagerty video as always! That’s exactly how I feel in my f80 once I shift into 3rd gear, rocket ship mode lol car finally gets traction and moves out, especially on ethanol.

Amazing how far automatic transmissions have come over just the last few years. I remember a Ford Escort LX-E I had back in 1991. It had a 5 speed manual that got it to 60 in 8 seconds flat. The automatic version of the same car - 11 seconds.

That BMW M2 has been a wallpaper for about 2 years and I never caught any word of one being made and I gotta say, I’m impressed 👀 because I also see myself in that new Camaro 2SS and the performance/numbers for its power/weight translation was astounding. I’m blown away at how quick it was
Sadly that’s what the automatics have become compared to the manuals and considering it has 10 gears compared to the mustangs 6 gave it a huge advantage as we saw it’s crazy how fast they have become.

The Camaro gets walked by the Mustang when they both use the auto trans. Clearly this Mustang lost when the driver had to shift gears in the manual.

The new M2 is such a riot, need somebody that can really drive to reel it in. Even though I've been driving for 30+ years, I'm no race car driver and I don't goto the track, and feel like I WILL crash it for sure when pushed to the limit.
