I had some success doing Atkins in 2003 but as soon as I transitioned to the Atkins bars and shakes as a snack, it became the gateway for me to getting back into my sweet tooth and eventually back into binge eating. Thankfully, 3 1/2 years of doing keto, I’ve avoided the relapse.

The same thing happened to me. Now I'm doing Carnivore. I'd like to eventually reintroduce a small amount of monk fruit for my coffee. But it's a slippery slope with those of us who are addicted to food.

    I couldn't agree more.
I undertook this journey to STOP obsessing over food. I've broken it by about 90%. My continuing battle is to STOP CRAVING FOOD TO EAT WHEN I KNOW I DON'T NEED IT (mental hunger/emotional BS). I find something to do.
    Food addiction is real.
Info: Began keto in April of 2020. Female 62yrs. old.
Starting A1c: 8.3. Starting weight: 240lbs. High blood pressure, back pains, joint discomfort, neuropathy in both feet, T2 diabetic for 30+ years.
    Currently: 65 yrs. old.
    Currently 150lbs.
    A1c: 5.3
I jog up and down stairs now. I squat.
    Off all medicines.
    Ketovore.

All the artificial sweeteners tend to cause problems for me. Aspartame gives me headaches, Splenda makes my teeth feel like they are going to explode. Erythritol and Stevia cause my joints to hurt. For me I just avoid all sweeteners-real or otherwise. Eat mostly carnivore and my weight loss is extremely slow but if I eat carbs I gain weight instantly. Definitely feel better! Thank you for all you do Dr. Cywes.

I’ve been losing about 10 pounds per month since I started Keto IF about 6 months ago… until I started eating those Keto bars and keto bread. Despite my fasting, calorie count and net carbs staying the same, I only lost a few pounds after introducing those foods into my diet.
I thought i could cheat with these snack foods, but my body rejected them. I know now that my net carbs and total carbs need to be the same thing - and the closer I get to 0 for carbs, the better my body responds. I added in more meat and stopped eating the “cheat” Keto foods and that got me back on track. I’m not even sure I stayed in ketosis eating those keto snacks.

I’ve lost 50 lbs. on keto in 5 months. I believe I’ve been able to do this very easily because I use stevia in my coffee and allow myself an occasional Diet Coke. (And I never eat lookalikes.) This has become plenty of sweetness for me! I do intend to cut out the Diet Coke, but not the stevia. My A1C has fallen from 9 to 5.6. As Dr. Cywes says, I believe that controlling my diabetes is much more beneficial to my health than a little stevia is detrimental to it!
And maybe it helps that I actually do live in the Rocky Mountains. 😂

I quitted almost all sugary taste after 66 day water fasting. My extreme measure was due to my ankle pain which is now greatly reduced and and I can do gardenig and such. But there was still one sweet source left - a b-complex vitamin drink. So the last step was to change that to pills not containing sweet taste. Now I'm sweet taste absolutist. Totally quitting sweet taste adds one more layer to safety network which you need as made of strong routines. As is this channel metions many times, the underlying reason for addiction is not cured by keto diet or fasting or any diet. But you don't need to be physically mortally sick just because you have an addiction. I'm "addiction addicted" so some addiction always keep on creeping around ready to drag me under the surface. When you quit sweet taste you get the benefit of being able to be much more sensitive to other tastes. That implies I classify adding sweet taste as an addiction too.

I found the distinction between sugarfree drinks and foods very interesting.
I have never called completely abstained from the former, even during my most rabid attempts at 'healthy eating'. I just really enjoy the occasional coke light or energy drink.
I never observed them triggering hunger in me. If anything, they reliably help distract me from wanting a snack. Coffee works equally well for me, but simply isn't always available or much more expensive, when out and about.
Food with artificial sweetener is a big no no for me, though, unless it has inbuilt portion control. Because I can be counted on to overeat on anything hyperpalatable.
I don't even loose weight on keto or carnivore, unless I track calories and make sure, to stay under 1800 or so. If I allow myself, to eat all the meat and butter and salmon and eggs I want, I'll eat way more then that. Which is why I personally prefer classic keto. It allows me to bulk up my meals with low calorie veggies and salads.

I agree to a point. I firmly believe that Stevia and Monk fruit are superior to all others because they are natural products as opposed to chemicals that do not have any reason to be in human body. I used to load 3 packets in 24 oz of drink, now down to 1. Still need that little taste. As always, I appreciate your talks.

I have not yet found anything you've said that I disagree with in many videos and I have stayed within 20 lbs of ideal weight in the past 42 years as a T1D, as I already am a low carb person.
In this video about the occasional sweetener is exactly right. For black drip coffee I do not bother but with instant coffee I feel I need to add a sweetener pack to improve it as it is not as tasty as a real drip coffee which has a richer taste. I Life has to have some benefits.
I have never been addicted to carbs ever, but the reason I listen to your videos is you are exceptionally intelligent and have things well thought out and very well presented. I listen for the education about more health topics but not because I need to be dissuaded from carbs as I already have done that with good enough success. My point is to say you are one of the great doctors in the USA.

I think look-alikes are OK for people who are not carb addicts. People who exist on a ketogenic diet for the health benefits who don't have an issue with carb/food addiction are better suited to these things. If you are a carb addict (I am one) that has used food as a bridge for most of their lives, look alikes are not a good idea. They are a gateway drug. They are giving you permission to use food as emotion management. I know this from first hand experience having done a ketogenic diet with look-alikes in the rotation. They were always a good way to trigger a binge event. So for me personally, they are a no go.

Dr. Cywes, you’re gonna love this, I was consuming very high dosages of Splenda and neutrasweet in my coffee, tea and cooking with it for desserts, and drinking up to a 12 pack of diet soda that contains obviously other artificial sweeteners. I was finally diagnosed by Mayo clinic to have ulcerative colitis and ended up on Entyvio, for seven years, I decided that I would try eliminating all package foods, all processed foods, all sugar, all imitation and artificial sweeteners and go on a carnivore diet. Within three months, I completely healed my colin’s ulcerative colitis and was able to get off the every other month’s infusions of Entyvio and that was five years ago and to this date I’m feeling great. I’m guessing my colon was waving a white flag saying enough enough of all this artificial crap. Obviously, this is an anecdotal situation and there’s no science or research or studies that I’ve done it’s just what happened to me by a process of elimination, I’m guessing the megadoses of artificial sweeteners that I was consuming pretty much, was the main cause of my issue, and that’s my own hypothesis. I welcome. any thoughts.

I have healed alot of my issues and the majority of my skin tags went away. I do drink Zevia sodas which are sweetened with Stevia and I don't have issues, but a few months back I tried adding back diet Mt Dew and I immediately started growing skin tags again. I stay far away from aspartame and sucralose!

Some good stuff here. For many "perfection" is an avoidance mechanism. If perfection is needed and impossible, there is no sense in even starting. At any given point, the only thing we can do it get a little better than we are right now. Over time those little improvements compound and can really get you somewhere. MY experience is similar to the Doc's, I can have the occasional Diet Coke or put Crystal Light in my water and not fall off the wagon, but I wouldn't even dream of eating a no sugar brownie.

I put 25% sucralose solution in coffee, three drops or so a cup, when I want sweet coffee. Sometimes I make pancakes from eggs and cream cheese, and use the sucralose in those. It tolerates a bit of heat.
Yes, the eggs and cream cheese pancakes are lookalikes and I’m having them less often of late. Adding blueberries to them is even worse…

Ive been low carb since 2001 (still have my '93 Atkins book as my then-guide and my food logs for my first months -whew that was tough!) - I'd be lying if I said that over the last 22 years, I didn't use artificial sweeteners and "look-alike" products. I've found the best time for the look-alikes, for me, is when I bring them to social gatherings. If I'm having something that *looks* like what everyone else is eating, I'm less likely to sample & give in to temptation (been there & done that!!) Overall I've maintained a 110lb weight loss using these strategies (I'm now 51, f) and kept myself out of trouble doing. On a day to day basis, it's been years since I've even wanted "regular" drinks, or foods, but do use powdered electrolytes and some sweetener-based water enhancers.

There are 128 ounces in a gallon. 16 oz goes into 128, eight times. So if you pay $x dollars for a 16 oz drink, you are paying $x dollars Times 8 per gallon. Example: if you pay 5$ for a 16 oz sugar laden coffee drink, that amounts to $40 a gallon. And we B*tch about the price of gasoline? And gas takes you to work. That $40 drink takes you to the toilet. A $1, 12 oz canned Coke will cost you $10.66 a gallon. (128/12 = 10.66). This info alone is enough to stop wasting money on emotions.

People creating replacements. When I shop, I’m not looking for replacement ingredients. Every week I buy keto- friendly products. Meats, eggs, butter, lots of non-starchy vegetables, etc. Perhaps only once a month, I may buy some pork rind crumbs and as a new variety of making chicken, I may coat my boneless skinless chicken with the crumbs and egg wash. Allowing me to enjoy something different. As a diabetic for many years who is very sensitive to carbs, I now know there is no turning back. If I eat more than a low amount of carbs, I will feel terrible and my blood sugars will skyrocket. I have no desire to do that. So, is my once a month (most times a time gap longer than that) treat myself to variety, is it so bad?

I can’t eat aspartame, but the others are ok for me in my tea. Aspartame gives me crazy painful cramps in my abdomen, sides and back. So if you have unexplained cramps and use aspartame, try cutting it out. My cramps stopped the day after I quit.

I've noticed that after knocking back a 1.25 - 2.0 litre bottle of most diet soda's, about 20 - 30 minutes later, I get quite a strong empty, hollow sensation in the gut which kind of emulates hunger ... needless to say that if you satisfy that hunger with carb-laden crap ( as so many people who think diet drinks are good because they're calorie-free ) then the consequences are obvious !

Great content doctor C, I’ve always felt consuming “Keto” desserts a joke akin to confessing your sins to a priest in order to commit more sins later.Being a stevia user now from decades of massive sugar abuse, I always remind myself that this “ hack” also has a shelf life !

I'm lucky I do love my carbs but I gave them up because I wanted to feel better more then the carbs so it wasn't hard for me. I wasn't a sugar guy anyway but fighting Crohn's and being lonely because of it was more important to me then anything food or drink. 9 months carnivore and just now starting to tell I'm better. The first few months was supper hard because my body would not flip to using fat for fuel. I almost gave it up because I felt worse for 5 or 6 months but so glad I stayed with it. A person has to have hope and the western medical system as a whole is broken. IMHO.

There's such a thing as being dogmatic about certain things. When one is an addict, you need those "bridges" to eventually cut off any crutches. As for cancer, 67% of cancers are not caused by any bad habits but are a roll of the dice. When someone is obese, certainly morbidly obese, and you tell them they can't use stevia, monk fruit, erithrotol, etc., so they fail and get worse, shame on you! That is calculated sabotage. It would be better for some to even get surgery if that's the only way to lose weight, elevate the quality of their life, and prolong their life. I get really tired of people virtue signaling. As a fitness professional for decades, the people who do that the most are usually not satisfied with where they are, so they attack others to prop themselves up. If something is working for YOU, great. But persecuting people for where they are is something that the struggle should have taught us all is wrong. I'm not excluding myself here. I have to check myself everyday when insecurities and self loathing creep in. We need to support one another. I have friends on diabetes medications that control their blood sugars and helped them lose weight. One of them is being judged every day when she, at 61, works out 2 to 3 days per week doing heavy resistance training with cardio between, and has lost 140 lbs.. She knows she's a work in progress, so when people judge her, I tell her to remember where she came from when she could barely walk, and use their dirty looks and unwanted helpful tips as motivation to keep going. She eats plenty of carbs, but she's improving every day. I eat nothing from a plant but only drink rooibos and coffee as bridges, and, yes, I use stevia. I also have a max bench of 240 lbs. and am turning 59. I was the biggest food addict you could ever meet and used, what I called exercise bulemia to look like a fitness model in my 40s. In other words, I didn't puke. I worked out way too much. I was a premier trainer because I looked like a superhero. My nickname was "Xena." But I was eating crap. I ate fully loaded bagels with bacon, cheese, egg, mayo and washed it down with chocolate smoothies. Now, I'd kill for that body, and I literally have no choice but to be carnivore because eating plants gives me chronic IBS. Nobody would have judged me as I wolfed down pizza and spaghetti because I looked like an athlete. But when folks gain weight from menopause, or illnesses, etc., the claws come out. To all of those who are using bridges, no matter where you are in the process of cleaning up your eating, I salute you for your efforts because I know how hard it is to wake up every morning and make those conscious decisions not to slide back into old bad habits. Relapse happens and you just hop back on the wagon. Love yourself NOW as you are. Getting to your goal so you can be "happy" is a myth. Be happy in your journey because happiness is not dependent on others. It's a choice.

Would you enjoy water with lime or water infused with cucumber? In restaurants I like water with lime as my drink. It’s refreshing. Also saves me $3 or more lol. You can probably step down quantity wise by replacing half of the diet sodas with water with lime or with plain water if you like plain water. After a few months you can replace 2 out of 3 with water. Eventually you can drop it altogether if that is your goal replacing 100% with water or water with lime and or cucumber.

Hi Doc, where do you stand on preservatives like Sodium Erythorbate and Sodium Nitrite in bacon. In my keto/carnivore diet that i started back in August, i eat about 8-9 thick slices of Smithfield’s Applewood smoked bacon a day. It tastes really good and the favorite food in my diet. But seems there is a lot of debate about sodium nitrates in the human diet? My BUN increased from 23-27 after starting this diet and creatine decreased from 1.27 to 1.19. Triglycerides dropped from 125 to 65. HDL increased from 38 to 48. HbA1C from 5.8 to 5.6. Could the increase in BUN be due to the addition of so much bacon to my diet. My previous breakfast was a bowl of steel cut oats, chopped pecans, ground flax seed and fresh blueberries and raspberries added.

Hi Dr Cywes! First of all, thank you for your valuable insights that you keep providing us with. I was stuck at 94KG and above for a few years, and now I am at 87, after little over a month.
There is only one question that is bugging me. For someone who has only been insulin resistant (assumingely, undiagnosed) and is practicing a martial art such as Judo, is it safe to have elevated cholesterol levels? Intense training also comes with a lot of non-nutritional inflammation, and I’d like to know if in this case, elevated LDL will build up plaques. Thank you kindly 🙏

I seem to be fighting a tremendous uphill battle. I seem to be able to get to a certain “fat point” and then my soul just rebels 😂 I went from 300lbs to 230lbs on a low carb protocol but have slowly rebounded to 250 and I’m stuck. It’s the carbs. I am struggling to stay under 100g/day let alone anything less than that and many days it’s higher especially with weight training. Really appreciate the content. Perhaps you could speak to Splenda. Is it generally the same as the others? Thanks.

Dr Cywes, you've contradicted your message in other videos. You've stated unequivocally that replacement foods such as keto bread and the like are as harmful as non alcoholic beer. These look alikes, as you call them in this video, serve the same purpose of transition for many people as the beverages you mentioned. Show some consistency in your messaging to help your community better deal with the initial stresses of getting away from the standard western diet

I have been a strict Ketovore/Carnivore for over a year and a half now with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas when I do make a keto treat using stevia or monkfruit. This is so I have something to share (if anyone else wants a healthier dessert option - like my son) and to have a piece or two when everyone else is eating sweetened cranberries, pumpkin pie, and many other sugary treats. I do not make them the rest of the year, not even on my birthday. Do you still think this is problematic?

Sir, I am very confused now after watching your presentation on a carnivore diet....I am trying to stop a cancer tumour growing through diet, and I have just finished reading....THE CHINA STUDY, by Dr Colin C Campbell, who says meat feeds cancer cells, and also, how the OKINAWA (Japan,) who live a long life eat tofu, and sea vegetables, and the HUNZA TRIBE, known for their long life, how they eat apricot kernels, (cyanide), from the apricots they grow. I have just stared eating them, along with almonds, nuts, oats, chia seeds and flaxseed, sesame seeds, hemp seeds, tahini, cocoa, cocoa butter, avocado, red onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric, basil, raspberries, sweet potatoe, tomatoes, seaweed, coconut, coconut oil, soya beans, lentils and barley....I also suffer sever constipation all the time and now I don't know what to eat to stop this tumour growing.....Please can you help me?....I would be very grateful....Thank you for your time....🙏🙏🙏🙏

Fiber actually CAUSES constipation, not relieve it. I wouldn't eat anything you have on your list there especially the soy. All soy is GMO/toxic, contaminated with glyphosate and will disrupt your hormones. Seeds are useless and too high in omega 6. Stay a mile away from oats; too high in carbs also glyphosate ridden. Stick to meat and eggs. Lots of disinformation about meat; don't believe it it's not true.

In my experience, artificial sweeteners are best used very sparingly. I’m down 60 lbs through various stages of keto, ketovore … not only that but gained numerous health benefits and finally breaking my food/carb addiction after 40 years of it.
I had to unsubscribe from some keto TH-camrs because their whole channel became cooking look alike foods. It was obviously slowing their progress and making me think about food every single day. Keto Chow shakes, ice cream, pumpkin caramel bread, pancakes etc etc. I want to focus on the other wonderful things in life like exercise, family, meat😂😂

Cancer thrives on Sugar , Sugar addictive's and maybe Sugar Alcohols. No surprise in anything, anymore .
When my girlfriend told me, several years ago, she felt Sugar Addictive's caused her Cancer , I just listened.
She would drink 40 ounce of Tea, she addictived those little pink packets to her Tea.
First off, I hate Tea, all I do is drink water.
Last night I end up getting a call, I was told my cousin right now has Cancer and they can't (hospital ) figure out where

What can I use in my Morning Coffee to Replace Sugar. Artificial Sweeteners e.g. Phenylalanine and Aspartame have literally nearly killed me. I am Deadly Allergic to them and I go into ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK if I Ingest even a small amount. This is not Psychosomatic. I would like an answer. I have to carefully read every Food Label. I get a Metallic taste if anything Artificial is detected.
I have looked at the Chemical Makeup of these products and don’t understand why this happens.
I have been unable to obtain a reason or explanation from a lot of Doctors I have consulted.
    The Chemical makeup is similar:
    Sucrose Formula is C 12 , H 22, O 11.
    Aspartame Formula: C14, H 18, N 205
    Phenylalanine Formula: C9, H11, NO, 2
I have not tried Stevia due to reading these results.
Long Term use of Stevia significantly increased
cholesterol levels and significantly decreased HDL levels (serum high-density lipoproteins) and increased LDL levels (serum low-density lipoproteins). Levels of free fatty acids were significantly higher than those of control groups
I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
