I had a massive PE 13 years ago and my cardiologist tol me to take a baby aspirin / day for the rest of my life. He was also an oncologist and in a private conversation on the way to our cars he also told me to forget about low fat dieting and start looking at low carb. He qualified that statement that he would not be able to advise me that in an official consultation at the time...!!!
I thank him to this day as I have been more or less low carb for 13 years and went from over 100kg to 80 kg and and 10x healthier than I ever was!

I have stents, type 2 diabetes, I was on asprin and was constantly heavy bleeding from my back passage. It was so bad I had to keep getting iron infusions, I was also suicidal. I decided to stop taking asprin strongly against my GPs advice. The bleeding stopped completely. I have been keto since 17th of August, I have lost 12lb and my blood sugars are normal. My GP told me the risks of not taking the asprin and my reply was there is living and living. Love your talks by the way.

My friend didn't listen to me while driving 2 days straight. I told him to take aspirin. He has a pulmonary embolism now and in the hospital 🫁 I had 4 clots in my legs from my job about 4 years ago. I was walking / exercising daily! Couldn't afford their expensive meds, so I went to aspirin. Been fine ever since. 55 ketovore. I was keto when i got my first blood clots. CAC 0 . Dr C is a real doc practicing.

I would think that also goes for taking a baby aspirin if going on long airplane flights (oh, I finally got to the part where Dr C mentions flying) or if sick in bed for several days. My husband who is paraplegic broke his lower right leg many years ago and was put in a cast - not told to go on a baby aspirin, but though he regularly did and still does upper body workouts with weights as well as being a “Wheeler” he developed a DVT in that leg with PEs and survived but now has to be on warfarin (rat poison) to thin his blood (found out he is anaphylactic with anything with aspirin in it). If you are sick enough you only want to be in bed - don’t be…get up and move around as it’s better for your lungs too.

After taking baby aspirin for a couple of decades I noticed that as I aged I was experiencing significant bruising and bleeding under my skin. When I mentioned this to a friend, he replied that "everybody knows that ones blood thins as we age." I stopped taking baby aspirin and my symptoms decreased markedly. That was over 5 years ago, I'll be 78 next month and won't be taking any baby aspirin in the coming decades.

I had breast cancer 2 years ago (2021). I'm 54. My medical oncologist has me on tamoxifin and a baby aspirin a day. I have been keto since Nov. 2019 and ketovore since January. When I saw Ken's video I dropped the baby aspirin to 2 times a week instead.
I just don't know who to listen to anymore. My med oncologist sees me via zoom and goes over a checklist, I literally watch her eyes scanning the page as she asks her generic questions.
Wish I could find a doc that would give it to me straight. There are times I doubt I even need that tamoxifin.

Morning Dr. Cywes. I'm a 70 yr. young woman who had a spotnaneous dissection of a basilar artery when I was 43. Did not tear out into the brain only on the interior, formed a clot and I had a pontine stroke- locked in, completely paralyzed. Ended up in the ER where then H was the doctor on duty. Flown to OHSU where they gave me urokinase in my femoral artery, snaked it up to my brain and broke up the clot. Post surgery i was on coumadin for 6 mos. then aspirin for a yr. I no longer take aspirin. I now have tinnitus, big time. If I have pain I don't take anything, just work it out. I wonder if taking aspirin is OK for me? Oh, I graduated college a yr. after the stroke,- hike, swim, bike. I'm a miracle. You are awesome.

Do you have pulsatile tinnitus or ringing tinnitus? I have pulsatile tinnitus. The specialist said to try aspirin, but it had zero effect.
I subsequently accidentally discovered that both caffeine (from instant coffee) and potassium both have a positive effect on my pulsatile tinnitus. The caffeine had a small effect, but the potassium citrate has a significant effect; I take a 1/4 teaspoon in 400ml of water twice daily; morning and evening.

Age 73 and my parents both lived to 95. I take a low dose statin 2x per week for trig of 161. Hoping that goes down from May so I can stop the statin.

I am taking 75mg prescription aspirin daily after a bypass surgery two years back. I am aware of aspirin's significantly negative side effects with long term use which has prompted me to evaluate natural alternatives but not much research is available. I have been trying to figure out if a reduced aspirin dose with natural blood thinners can be a possible solution. Appreciate Dr. Cywes views.

This confirms where I am at 65, and started keto-ish low carb higher fat. Don't fear the fat that comes with the meat.
The key was an understanding of part of the mechanism of insulin.
lost 50 pounds in 6 months. One can't lose weight continuously & indefinitely.
    life comes in cycles
*Editor's note:* misspoke at 13:44 but immediately clarified. "You don't need an _aspirin_ if you take an aspirin as indicated."
I have no use for statins with my understanding at this point.

I`ve been taking baby aspirin for 15 years.. I usually take a couple in the morning and 3 at bed time. If I take 4 at bedtime I will sleep all through `til morning. I`m now 76 and have fluctuations in heartbeats but in the normal range. I will not take blood thinners. Scratches and cuts heal immediately ,so I feel safe taking more if needed.

Thanks for the video Doc. back in 2021 i had a TIA stroke which caused oclution and a small brain bleed ( hemoridge) . The doctor put me on 3 different drugs one was a statin and olso put me on a 81 mg aspirin. I was ok for about 1 month then while sleeping i got a terrible burning in my right hand and it also swelled up. This went on for about 2 weeks until i called my doctor and said that i was gonna go off the drugs, he advised against that , so i stayed the course and suffered for another week till i finally stopped taking them. i stayed on the aspirin though and am still taking the aspirin although i don't thinki really need them, i find that I am bruising way too easily. I am71 years old now. By the way there were other symptoms too and after stopping the 3 drugs (about 1 week) all the symptoms were gone and have never returned. My question is do you think i should go off the aspirin, i am very healthy otherwise. thanks.

I have been told that my husband had 2 brain aneurysms because of blood thinners. He took baby aspirin every day. I'm truly curious what you think. We have been super strict low carb for 3or4 years, he had gotten slightly lax about it the past year and a half. He's had a heart stent about 7 years ago.....95% artery blockage. He has autoimmune disease as well. They have him on statins and blood pressure meds and all kinds of different stuff now. Metformin.
We weren't seeing the weight coming off like other people when we were strict so we got a bit discouraged. Even more so now.

And told not to take NSAIDS including aspirin. Long history of high cholesterol but a CAC of zero. Statins have recently been prescribed but I won’t take them. I am 67, 6'3" and I weight 230lbs on my way down to 215lbs from a high 3 years ago of 325lbs. I have been doing Ketogenic for 2 years and now I have been pure carnivore for 9 weeks. My CAC scores over the last 7 years have all been 0. BUT... I have had arrhythmia for over 30 years. My cardiologists have tried to put me on blood thinners, but I refused. So I have been taking a baby aspirin about 3 times a week for the past 7 years. I have never had a cardiac event. It is just that my heartbeat rate is irregular varying from 50 to 95 randomly. I swim 3 to 5 miles a week and am fairly active. My sleeping average heart rate is 57. Should I continue taking baby aspirin? My LDL is 238 and HDL is 70. Of course every doctor on the planet has tried to put me on statins which I also refuse.. I have torn up many prescriptions in front of the doctors... Thank you for your sanity...

I definitely believe in what you say based on my research but I have some concerns about a CAC. It only shows hard plaque and misses the most dangerous soft plaques. Most dangerous in that the plaque can rupture and cause a blood clot and lead to a stroke or heart attack. Can you elaborate on this?
Also, I have seen studies that say statins can stabilize the dangerous unstable plaques. Your thoughts on this?
As always thank you for all your great info!

Do not fear CAC test. It’s low cost, low radiation, extremely fast, and non invasive. Really nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Those that poo poo this test usually stems from competing modalities. Other tests are comparably much higher profitability, more invasive, more risks.
Moreover if any doctor recommends a diagnostic test over a screening test, run for your life. CAC test is a screening test.
It’s better to know and more importantly get a baseline. If there is a problem, you can look into secondary prevention before having an event. What’s better than that.

Dr. Cywes - You don't have a placard on your YT videos that says 'From a doctor licensed in the U.S.'. I'm noticing that really none of the doctors in this particular 'low carb' space on YT have it but the SugarMD who is advocating that T2 diabetics eat quinoa, low carb bread and legumes does. What the fluff? Is this placard new? Are you applying for it with the 'YT health council' whoever they are or have you applied and been rejected? Curious if the topic is worth an episode since folks are all a twitter about the potential shadow-banning of this sort of low carb health content on YT because it is not in alignment with accepted health science as per the WHO.

I’m a 77 year old man with a calcium score of 433. I have been on a keto diet for nine months and have lost 44 pounds and reached my weight goal.
My labs were excellent a couple of months ago, but my doctor encouraged me to continue taking my statin and a baby aspirin. I decided to cut my statin in half and on my own discontinued, taking the baby aspirin because I noticed excessive bruising on occasion.
Now I’m torn as to whether I should start taking the baby aspirin again. I’m thinking that you have convinced me to maybe start them two or three times a week. Any advice…

Yes, it does so don’t take any Aspirin or ibuprofen or naproxen while on it and also watch because some antibiotics will change it as well as too many veggies etc with Vitamin K. My husband takes Coumadin that is how I know. Also the Voltaren ointment that is now over the counter (for arthritis areas) can also affect it so watch that as well.

    • @trail.blazer

Unfortunately most fish oil is highly processed, somewhat delicate, oxidised and contains aldehydes. It does not appear to be a good supplement. There might be some better than others.
I think quite a few herbs have blood thinning effects including ginkgo biloba, ceylon cinnamon and berberine.

Well, the stomach is a strong store of ACID. (HC acid). That an aspirin can upset that "acid balance" just doesn't make sense. It depends upon how much, of course. A local fellow of my acquaintance because of hip point got carried away with Naproxen to the point where he lost a lot of weight and ended up in the ER. The medical system monitored his drug use and when he was stable they replaced his hips.

Dr. wanted me to take the shot that lowers your ldl to 70 or below. Of course I wasn't going to do that. I took a statin once in my 30s and learned that if my ldl goes below 150 my nerves start to get damaged. I was diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy when I took the statin. Anyway... I asked him for a CAC scan and it was only 10. Of course he still wanted me to take the shot. Haven't been back to him.
