I had a massive PE 13 years ago and my cardiologist tol me to take a baby aspirin / day for the rest of my life. He was also an oncologist and in a private conversation on the way to our cars he also told me to forget about low fat dieting and start looking at low carb. He qualified that statement that he would not be able to advise me that in an official consultation at the time...!!! I thank him to this day as I have been more or less low carb for 13 years and went from over 100kg to 80 kg and and 10x healthier than I ever was!

I have stents, type 2 diabetes, I was on asprin and was constantly heavy bleeding from my back passage. It was so bad I had to keep getting iron infusions, I was also suicidal. I decided to stop taking asprin strongly against my GPs advice. The bleeding stopped completely. I have been keto since 17th of August, I have lost 12lb and my blood sugars are normal. My GP told me the risks of not taking the asprin and my reply was there is living and living. Love your talks by the way.
My friend didn't listen to me while driving 2 days straight. I told him to take aspirin. He has a pulmonary embolism now and in the hospital 🫁 I had 4 clots in my legs from my job about 4 years ago. I was walking / exercising daily! Couldn't afford their expensive meds, so I went to aspirin. Been fine ever since. 55 ketovore. I was keto when i got my first blood clots. CAC 0 . Dr C is a real doc practicing.
I would think that also goes for taking a baby aspirin if going on long airplane flights (oh, I finally got to the part where Dr C mentions flying) or if sick in bed for several days. My husband who is paraplegic broke his lower right leg many years ago and was put in a cast - not told to go on a baby aspirin, but though he regularly did and still does upper body workouts with weights as well as being a “Wheeler” he developed a DVT in that leg with PEs and survived but now has to be on warfarin (rat poison) to thin his blood (found out he is anaphylactic with anything with aspirin in it). If you are sick enough you only want to be in bed - don’t be…get up and move around as it’s better for your lungs too.
@susanhogan2560 aww I'm sorry about your husband. Ya, i even kept moving when i wasn't working. It wasn't enough. I'll never go back to a full time sitting job.
I had breast cancer 2 years ago (2021). I'm 54. My medical oncologist has me on tamoxifin and a baby aspirin a day. I have been keto since Nov. 2019 and ketovore since January. When I saw Ken's video I dropped the baby aspirin to 2 times a week instead. I just don't know who to listen to anymore. My med oncologist sees me via zoom and goes over a checklist, I literally watch her eyes scanning the page as she asks her generic questions. Wish I could find a doc that would give it to me straight. There are times I doubt I even need that tamoxifin. Thanks Dr. Cywes!
God bless you. I hope you get well soon. I feel the same way you do about what direction to go. I love what Paul Saladino has to say, but I’m not like him. I have atherosclerosis and have to be careful with carbs.

After taking baby aspirin for a couple of decades I noticed that as I aged I was experiencing significant bruising and bleeding under my skin. When I mentioned this to a friend, he replied that "everybody knows that ones blood thins as we age." I stopped taking baby aspirin and my symptoms decreased markedly. That was over 5 years ago, I'll be 78 next month and won't be taking any baby aspirin in the coming decades.

Morning Dr. Cywes. I'm a 70 yr. young woman who had a spotnaneous dissection of a basilar artery when I was 43. Did not tear out into the brain only on the interior, formed a clot and I had a pontine stroke- locked in, completely paralyzed. Ended up in the ER where then H was the doctor on duty. Flown to OHSU where they gave me urokinase in my femoral artery, snaked it up to my brain and broke up the clot. Post surgery i was on coumadin for 6 mos. then aspirin for a yr. My uncle has prostate cancer (Gleason 6). They told him not to eat protein, as it can make the disease worse. They also told him to cut carb to near zero. Now all he can eat is monounsaturated fat or eat avocado all day. He is not a happy camper anymore.
Not a fan of medication, but I saw a great video by a professor from Cardiff university on Aspirin. It's an old non-pharma drug that is safe. It has side effects, but these are minor and extremely rare. It is the least toxic of all drugs. Post stent I have no problem taking baby aspirin daily; eventually I might taper it off to every other day.
I am taking 75mg prescription aspirin daily after a bypass surgery two years back. I am aware of aspirin's significantly negative side effects with long term use which has prompted me to evaluate natural alternatives but not much research is available. I have been trying to figure out if a reduced aspirin dose with natural blood thinners can be a possible solution. Appreciate Dr. Cywes views.
@@Erik-jv6fu I had a stomach / colon bleed couple of months ago - OK now - my Gastroenterologist indicated that aspirin induced bleeds can be a way of life in the long term - not acceptable to me. My cardiologist is adamant that I continue with daily Aspirin so I am taking it for the time being. It is a devils choice - aspirin is beneficial for keeping blood thinner for heart health but the blood leaks especially in the brain can give one a stroke which to me is a worse option as compared to heart health. I am continuing to research equally effective natural blood thinning alternatives to the best of my understanding with the intent to come off daily aspirin in the long term.
I am 67, 6'3" and I weight 230lbs on my way down to 215lbs from a high 3 years ago of 325lbs. I have been doing Ketogenic for 2 years and now I have been pure carnivore for 9 weeks. My CAC scores over the last 7 years have all been 0. BUT... I have had arrhythmia for over 30 years. My cardiologists have tried to put me on blood thinners, but I refused. So I have been taking a baby aspirin about 3 times a week for the past 7 years. I have never had a cardiac event. It is just that my heartbeat rate is irregular varying from 50 to 95 randomly. I swim 3 to 5 miles a week and am fairly active. My sleeping average heart rate is 57. Should I continue taking baby aspirin? My LDL is 238 and HDL is 70. Of course every doctor on the planet has tried to put me on statins which I also refuse.. I have torn up many prescriptions in front of the doctors... Thank you for your sanity...
I would love to hear your thoughts on fish oil instead of aspirin. I was told that fish oil is a blood thinner is this correct? Thanks for your response.
Unfortunately most fish oil is highly processed, somewhat delicate, oxidised and contains aldehydes. It does not appear to be a good supplement. There might be some better than others. I think quite a few herbs have blood thinning effects including ginkgo biloba, ceylon cinnamon and berberine.
Dr. Cywes, I stopped doing carnivore because I have a mutation in the PPAR-a gene which impairs how my body handles saturated fats. I’m wondering if you have any insight into this genetic variant as it relates to keto/carnivore? Thanks
Yes, it does so don’t take any Aspirin or ibuprofen or naproxen while on it and also watch because some antibiotics will change it as well as too many veggies etc with Vitamin K. My husband takes Coumadin that is how I know. Also the Voltaren ointment that is now over the counter (for arthritis areas) can also affect it so watch that as well.
Dr. Cywes - You don't have a placard on your YT videos that says 'From a doctor licensed in the U.S.'. I'm noticing that really none of the doctors in this particular 'low carb' space on YT have it but the SugarMD who is advocating that T2 diabetics eat quinoa, low carb bread and legumes does. What the fluff? Is this placard new? Are you applying for it with the 'YT health council' whoever they are or have you applied and been rejected? Curious if the topic is worth an episode since folks are all a twitter about the potential shadow-banning of this sort of low carb health content on YT because it is not in alignment with accepted health science as per the WHO.
I have been told that my husband had 2 brain aneurysms because of blood thinners. He took baby aspirin every day. I'm truly curious what you think. We have been super strict low carb for 3or4 years, he had gotten slightly lax about it the past year and a half. He's had a heart stent about 7 years ago.....95% artery blockage. He has autoimmune disease as well. They have him on statins and blood pressure meds and all kinds of different stuff now. Metformin. We weren't seeing the weight coming off like other people when we were strict so we got a bit discouraged. Even more so now.
Hey doc I'm 66 and am on Prasugrel and a baby aspirin due to a stent procedure one year ago.. I'm uneasy about continuing to use both of these in the.future..
Instead of using aspirin u can use Ginger capsules to thin the blood without the fatal side-effects of potential stomach rupture n bleeding that aspirin can cause.
Interesting video. Went to the hospital with symptoms of a stroke. Family dr Diagnose it as trigeminal neuralgia. Not on Aspirin at this time. I also have hashi's. Was wondering if I should be on low dose aspirin now. Dr also like to push statins. Thanks Dr.
I definitely believe in what you say based on my research but I have some concerns about a CAC. It only shows hard plaque and misses the most dangerous soft plaques. Most dangerous in that the plaque can rupture and cause a blood clot and lead to a stroke or heart attack. Can you elaborate on this? Also, I have seen studies that say statins can stabilize the dangerous unstable plaques. Your thoughts on this? As always thank you for all your great info!
Do not fear CAC test. It’s low cost, low radiation, extremely fast, and non invasive. Really nothing to lose and everything to gain. Those that poo poo this test usually stems from competing modalities. Other tests are comparably much higher profitability, more invasive, more risks. Moreover if any doctor recommends a diagnostic test over a screening test, run for your life. CAC test is a screening test. It’s better to know and more importantly get a baseline. If there is a problem, you can look into secondary prevention before having an event. What’s better than that.
Thanks for the review of this topic; it gave me pause to perhaps reconsider baby aspirin for inflammation when sick or when I have wide-spread joint point for some reason.
I have had a infarction in the past so I do take a baby aspirin but my Dr wants me on a statin because I’m doing carnivore and my LDL is very high even though everything else is great!
@Cervin_Suisse millions would not do it. They'd rather die. They want a pill, an injection, something you drink, something to do, an operation, just anything because the nothingness of a fast is unbearable.
I’m a 77 year old man with a calcium score of 433. I have been on a keto diet for nine months and have lost 44 pounds and reached my weight goal. My labs were excellent a couple of months ago, but my doctor encouraged me to continue taking my statin and a baby aspirin. I decided to cut my statin in half and on my own discontinued, taking the baby aspirin because I noticed excessive bruising on occasion. Now I’m torn as to whether I should start taking the baby aspirin again. I’m thinking that you have convinced me to maybe start them two or three times a week. Any advice…
Well, the stomach is a strong store of ACID. (HC acid). That an aspirin can upset that "acid balance" just doesn't make sense. It depends upon how much, of course. A local fellow of my acquaintance because of hip point got carried away with Naproxen to the point where he lost a lot of weight and ended up in the ER. The medical system monitored his drug use and when he was stable they replaced his hips.

I was told by a neurologist, after I had a small ischemic stroke, that adults need 2 low dose aspirin. This is advice he gave me admittedly from an “outcome study” that 1 aspirin is not enough for any adult over 150lbs. ❓ What you think?
What some that can't take AS can take instead? I'm fighting agains insulin resistance and high blood pressure. I feel as my heart beat shakes my body...
My bottle has a peel off label with more ingredients listed underneath. Stuff I normally would stay away from. I wonder if there is a pure 81 mg. Aspirin made.

Thanks for the video Doc. back in 2021 i had a TIA stroke which caused oclution and a small brain bleed ( hemoridge) . I am71 years old now. By the way there were other symptoms too and after stopping the 3 drugs (about 1 week) all the symptoms were gone and have never returned. My question is do you think i should go off the aspirin, i am very healthy otherwise. thanks.

I am a 72 yr old male and am so frustrated that there is not a consensus among the medical world on doing what is right.
My uncle has prostate cancer (Gleason 6). They told him not to eat protein, as it can make the disease worse. They also told him to cut carb to near zero. Now all he can eat is monounsaturated fat or eat avocado all day. He is not a happy camper anymore.
You are amazing, Doc!!! Thank you!
Great presentation . I totally agree with you regarding Statins. Thank you.
Thanks Dr Rob...some pearls in this vid today
There is not doubt you have the right approach.
Thank you so much for doing this!
I am in the same boat about undergoing bypass surgery. Will you continue to take a daily baby aspirin?
Excellent
Good examples and explanations of something that could be of use in certain situations
Thank you for all your good advice
Thank you for the clarity.
And natokonase
As usual more to think about and if I travel as you indicated I will need to remember your advise
Great info doc! Can you do one on Ibuprofen?
Dr. Cywes, I stopped doing carnivore because I have a mutation in the PPAR-a gene which impairs how my body handles saturated fats.
I’m wondering if you have any insight into this genetic variant as it relates to keto/carnivore?
Thanks
Wow, a lot to consider, really good to hear this.
Question, is this same as making a daily cup of tea out of willow bark?
Coumadin must do the same, yes?
Yes, it does so don’t take any Aspirin or ibuprofen or naproxen while on it and also watch because some antibiotics will change it as well as too many veggies etc with Vitamin K. My husband takes Coumadin that is how I know. Also the Voltaren ointment that is now over the counter (for arthritis areas) can also affect it so watch that as well.
How about cayenne pepper as a substitute to aspirin for blood thinner
Something to this cayenne business cause i can not find cayenne most times
Read studies?
Thanks for clarifying that for me.
great stuff, doc !
Thank you Dr!! 😊
Instead of using aspirin u can use Ginger capsules to thin the blood without the fatal side-effects of potential stomach rupture n bleeding that aspirin can cause.
Where is your ginger sourced from? I havwe been taking willow bark at 60 mg of salicin per cap in the extract.
I also have extreme doubts aboutu far east sources due to toxic sources such as the rivers that are said to be among the worst in the world.
Is it okay to take Natokinase and niacyne instead of baby aspirin ? ... 62 years old CAC over 600 over 3 years on keto
Does it do the same thing?
what about willow bark extract at 60mg of salicin each cap? I have taken 2 to 4 each with plavix to aid in the antiplatelet. Thank you
Such good advice!
Does fish oil have a similar effect to aspirin?
I've noticed that I bleed more/bruise easily when taking omega 3,
Yes it also thins the blood without the side-effects of asprin. But don't take more than 3000mg per day.
Thank you.
I have had a infarction in the past so I do take a baby aspirin but my Dr wants me on a statin because I’m doing carnivore and my LDL is very high even though everything else is great!
Just do a prolonged fast, this will clear up the plaque and reduce inflammation. Much better than using drugs
if doing a prolonged fast cleared plaque it would be known by now, millions would do it and cardio vascular events would be on the downfall.
Any advice…
Cayenne pepper is much healthier then any pills.
3 times a week to be on the safe side.
Yet Dr Brewer says to take one every day with equal data .
Any risk of aspirin and type 1 diabetes? Also where can I find a cardiologist like you in my area?
Stomach bleeding may result in a blood donation effect reducing harmful iron stores.
Thanks 🙏
My cardiologists nurse wanted me to start taking aspirin but im wondering if i should cause im menopausal age 61 and im in the middle of seeing a gynocologist for ive been bleeding off and on from vagina my endometrium is a 2 cm thickness bit my heart nurse wont ok the gyno to do a hysterascopy to see if i have hyperplasia atipical or cancer snd she will do a c curtelege ...dnc...too ...cause im having angina attacks unstable and stable
I’m salicylate intolerant, so that’s a no from me 😊
I was told by a neurologist, after I had a small ischemic stroke, that adults need 2 low dose aspirin.
I've been taking Eliquis I would like to use aspirin instead is that something that's feasible
South African ?
Seriously why do doctors ignore the benefits of cayenne pepper?
Would you take a baby aspirin if you had a CAC score of 3200?
TY
Let's talk about aspirin, doc.... Did you ever read a bottle of aspirin with all the additives they are putting in it?????
I just looked at my bottle. No additives at all.
My bottle has a peel off label with more ingredients listed underneath. Stuff I normally would stay away from. I wonder if there is a pure 81 mg. Aspirin made.
@@GilmerJohnThere will be additives in the form of tableting agents (excipients), maybe also colours. The purest aspirin I could find contained guar gum and a few colours, but at least no titanium dioxide. Some aspirin has a lot of ingredients!
You can get pure forms online.
Does having had a gastric sleeve have any bearing on bearing able to take a baby aspirin? I'm over 60.
Thanks for the video Doc. back in 2021 i had a TIA stroke which caused oclution and a small brain bleed ( hemoridge) . The doctor put me on 3 different drugs one was a statin and olso put me on a 81 mg aspirin. I was ok for about 1 month then while sleeping i got a terrible burning in my right hand and it also swelled up. This went on for about 2 weeks until i called my doctor and said that i was gonna go off the drugs, he advised against that , so i stayed the course and suffered for another week till i finally stopped taking them. i stayed on the aspirin though and am still taking the aspirin although i don't thinki really need them, i find that I am bruising way too easily. I am71 years old now. By the way there were other symptoms too and after stopping the 3 drugs (about 1 week) all the symptoms were gone and have never returned. My question is do you think i should go off the aspirin, i am very healthy otherwise. thanks.
What about bleeding to death?
What about baby aspirin with gestational diabetes? My fasting sugars are 97-101 typically but normal after meals. I am 28 years old
But is it just my imagination or does aspirin seem to cause me to have more episides as retinopathy .....black floaters bleeds???
Even a baby aspirin causes my stomach to hurt in about 3 days.
thank u sir
Can you have a Calcium Score if you already have stents??
Yes. There are also reports of stents increasing the possibilities of calcification.
There are better ways to treat the problems you're talking about. Removing all sugars from the diet for one thing.
So what if your doctor tells you to take a statin 10m and a baby aspirin only because I had a calcium score of 890
