      Light infantry weapons inside the DMZ, by the truce agreement, heavier weapons (tanks, artillery, combat helicopters) outside the DMZ. In the '80s we were restricted to carrying rifles (M-16-A1 at that time, obviously Kalashnikovs for them), pistols, and hand grenades. Crew-served or belt-fed machine guns were not allowed. Each side brought in landmines and sowed those in various places -- sometimes marked with engineering tape and those triangular "MINES!" signs. Soldiers manned observation posts (made of timber and sandbags) on each side, and conducted foot patrols on each side of the MDL. ordinary jeeps and trucks were allowed in (obviously staying on the roads).
      The line which runs down the center of the DMZ (obviously parallel to the South and North fence lines), which truly divides the peninsula, is called the MDL -- or Military Demarcation Line (and has yellow signs along it indicating in Korean, English, and Chinese, "Military Demarcation Line"). ....Step across THAT, and if you don't get shot (or step on a landmine), you become the life-long guest of the Dear Leader (or whatever the latest one is called now). ...Go find out about PFC Dresnok or Sgt. Jenkins if you want to hear their stories. Dresnok never left (but he was interviewed by visiting foreigners); Sgt. Jenkins got to leave because his wife was a kidnapped Japanese woman -- and the Japanese negotiated to get them out.

    A little more detail on the tree incident, American forces wanted to trim the tree at the DMZ because the tree blocked sightline from a South Korean observation tower which the North Korean forces can manoeuvre behind to set up strategic position.
    A team of American and South Korean solideres went to trim the tree but was met by a North Korean captain calming the tree was planted by Kim John il and prohibited the American forces from cutting it they ignore it the the short tempered North Korean captain ordered to “kill those bastards” and the rest is history

    Yes. The unusual show of force wasn't so much to make North Korea back down, it was to make China back down. War with NK means war with China. Period.
    Every year the joint forces of South Korean, US, and all US allies in the Pacific theatre practice a full scale war in full view of the North Korean forces... Every year. It was called Team Spirit.
    It was also the first time I encountered Gurkha troops and where I learned about the interesting knife they carry. They are extremely well respected. I dunno why I thought that was important.
    At the time that I was there (70's to 90's), the US civilian population also practiced a non-combatant evacuation (NEO) during the exercises.
    I am always shy to get political, but given the planning and history of US forces overseas, I will say that I am left a bit confused about the breakdown of events during the Afghanistan evacuation. I have never been there, though, so my perspective should be taken with a grain of salt.

FYI, though, in the list of aircraft used, the planes you showed as F-5s were actually either Mirage 2000s or F-20 tiger sharks with canards for some reason. also, the C-130s you showed aren't nuclear-capable, and the B-52s would be the planes carrying the nukes.

    The tree was sentimental… I don’t remember where but I watched somewhere where they went to trim the trees so they could see the bridge that was crossing the DMZ… That’s why North Korea didn’t want the tree trimmed or chopped down so the US and SK could not see them

    • @Aegis---
      @Aegis--- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      It was cut so they could get a better view from the building across (this was right at the border), NK soldiers saw that they were unarmed and demanded to stop cutting the tree, they refused and then the NK attacked, beating several and dragging one across the border to safely beat him in a nearby ditch while soldiers looked on, when his body was recovered he was essentially a pulp. The tree had no actual sentimental value, they just wanted an excuse to not let the SK and US forces have their way with the border

    • @weabootrash5891
      @weabootrash5891 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this comment is old and all but yeah, the North Koreans claimed (after the axe murder) that Kim Il-Sung himself planted the tree there, and under no circumstances could it EVER be cut or trimmed. The US and South Korea wanted it cut down because it blocked view of parts of the DMZ. There was some more dick waving between the murders and the actual operation to cut it down, but besides that the rest was spot on

    • @MrJm323
      @MrJm323 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, they also played martial music. But I clearly remember the strange change in crescendo as they swiveled the banks of loudspeakers around as they would occasionally play those eerie, religious-like choral pieces, dedicated no doubt to the Great Leader or Dear Leader -- the sounds would be wafting and waning. (The South Koreans tended to play pop music.)
      I remember being on top of G.P. Oullette, at night, with our NODs (AN/TAS-6s), observing the area around, and they were broadcasting some audience hall speech. I asked a KATUSA who was speaking (because it clearly wasn't Korean); and he said it was Ceaucescu, the Romanian dictator (who would later be killed in an army coup around 1989).

    The amount of forces the they sent into cut down one tree is the amount of forces that the Canadian government assigns to logging companies to act as operational protection against the Sasquatches in the Canadian forests. It's a perfectly reasonable amount of protection.

    5:02 military overspending at its finest

    • @vyros.3234
      @vyros.3234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is not overspending. The US is the richest country so it has more money to spend. Also when looking at a countries spending you need to look at 2 measurements. Spending to gdp percentage and military spending out of government spending. The US spends 3.4% of its gdp on its military and 10% of its government spending on military. It teice as much on healthcare than its military. Its spending percentages are average when compared to the rest of the world. You must remember that the US just has a shitload of more money than everyone else. Also with this Ukraine war right now and the looming Taiwan war, i think were spending the right amount. Have a nice day.
