Welcome to the wonderful world of insane abandoned projects! There have been a lot of crazy ideas in history, like hydrogen filled airships or invading Russia in the winter. But with crazy ideas like these becoming a reality in our past, imagine what was considered too "out there" to make the cut. In this video, I thought I'd share some of the most interesting abandoned projects from our colorful past!

Corrections:
- I was wrong about Brits using kilometers. While I knew the UK used the metric system, I did not know how much they mix up units, and apparently they use miles all the time for things like road signs and speedometers. Mentally replace the UK with another European country and the joke will work.
- The US flag draped vertically in the background is actually backwards, the stars should be facing to the left.
- The pictures of Poland shown at 8:30 are not actually Poland. Google hath failed me. As one commenter pointed out, they are from Norilsk, Russia and the Czech Republic.

We measure distances in miles, height in feet and inches, but small lengths in centimetres and swimming pools in metres. We measure weight in kg and g if its food, but if it's a person then lbs and something we call stone that no one outside of Britain uses, and no one inside of Britain knows how much one of those is. We're pretty much on board with litres, except of course for beer and milk which has to come in pints.

The "Death Pyramid" sounds metal af. Making "astronomer who works on top of the death pyramid" the single most metal job in history. We were deprived of that.

Personally I'm pro death pyramid but anti observatory on top of death pyramid. Having a tower on top of a pyramid kinda ruins the whole vibe and also it's a monument to man's hubris

Fun fact, the “farmland” that Sorgel promised would have actually been unusable salt flats and essentially a drier desert
Sorgel was a bit... optimistic (and deluded).
Which then would've spread all over the (fortunately) current coastline.
Not to mention the huge increase in regional temperatures that would have brought the Sahara into Europe's doorstep...
I was _thinking_ "hey, won't removing a the largest body of water for a region affect weather patterns?" This is like how the first DVD players had glitches that caused the DVDs to jam. The engineers who made them forgot that when heated, like when in play in the players, the mostly made of metal DVDs would expand.
Just a very large d'uh that lasted longer than a moment.
Then let's just move our cities to the dead land and use the possibly fertile land where the cities used to be for farming, bulletproof plan :D
Fun fact: There were a LOT of prototype hydrogen airships before the Hindenburg, all built by Germany, and nearly every single one exploded, but the military kept funding airship research.
It probably would have all worked if they just switched to helium
Helium is actually a surprisingly rare substance on earth. The US at the time controlled most of the helium on earth and so was rather difficult for the germans to procure. At one point some of the airships that the US fielded took 10% of all helium on earth to float.
@@NRH111 And it is much heavier, 4g/mol instead of 2g/mol hydrogen is. Also tends to feckin go through all materials, so the airship would gradualy deflate.
Funnily enough, Poland more or less agreed with your idea. The government started heavily subsiding theme parks to encourage entertainment and tourism.
That is how Energylandia went from farmland to the roller coaster capital of Europe (soon to be, the world) in about a decade.
Is it perhaps next to the largest coal plant, which does not know how to use waste heat, and is lazy to build a cooling tower?

I saw the original London pyramid plans in the london archives a few years back, honestly mad to think of the modern london skyline and how it would change conceptions of the uk. during the 19th century london also had the london necropolis line which was a railway system purely for the dead and getting bodies out of the city, the london necropolis company possibly has the sickest logo and railways station name ever

Fun fact, in 1910 there was a bill proposed to Congress to spend $250,000 on buying hippos from Africa. Then these Hippos would be sent to Louisiana to create "Lake Cow Bacon". It was supported by Teddy Roosevelt.
