The only kamikaze bomber who sunk a ship by missing it. There's inspiration in that.
The extra ludicrous part is that the deck of a ship is more armored than the bottom (though there is a huge chunk of lead there to balance the ship), and obviously most things in the bull are bolted to the floor for obvious reasons, so the kamikaze plane probably did MORE damage than of it hit normally

But the keel is the frame, and you wouldn't put a race car engine on a broken frame. Same logic
And before random people question "why not armor the hull more?". Physics, armor is weight. And you have to balance bouncy, armor, crew amenities and supplies
And to make an un sinkable ship, you need to build it bigger then the body of water you intend to sail in

My grandpa was on a tanker ship during Korea, basically they just refueled other ships and hung out all day.
So naturally they got bored a lot, apparently one of his favorite activities was to fly seagulls.
They would tie a hot dog onto a kite string and wait for a seagul too grab it, and then you could fly them around like a living, choking, kite.

The Willie D is simultaneously the unluckiest ship and the luckiest ship. Because they never got in real trouble for any of this stuff.
Also, the torpedo drills were pretty standard, nothing out of the ordinary.
