The look of unease on their faces at the end is because they recognized a double meaning to Picard's putdown. Not only is calling them Romulans like the worst insult you can use on a Klingon, but they are worried that he knows they really DID manipulate the circumstances using the skill _of a Romulan._

I'm not sure - their deaths were impactful in the scene that the House of Duras would have taken a major back seat. DS9 later did an episode with Toral to show that he was taking initial steps to gain some glory of his own, but in general it was a weakened house. Else, there would have been little contribution to the house of Duras during the Dominion conflict, and you can only have so many Klingon movies made. Add to that, Enterprise did a great job in getting the house of Duras of the 2150s on screen.

It is quite a common theme in real politics that alliances are made not out of ideology but of strategic convenience. The USA has supported repressive tyrannical regimes in South Korea, Vietnam, much of Latin America and the Middle East not because we cared about 'freedom' but just to counteract Soviet puppets or other regimes we didn't like.
The downside is that in the long term almost none of these 'alliances' are sustainable.
It is quite hypocritical that we think they would work for us when we repeatedly point out how much they didn't work for the Soviets.
I apologize for making a political comment on another-wise entertaining episode.

@@TriniKnight01 It is always fear, compromising. The urge gets more severe when the problem has grown for a long time.
There is a lack of appreciation of what I call: "Everything flows from the root." - What you do can be seen as a mere manifestation of your spiritual makeup, it is like a carrier wave for it. And building a solid foundation makes nigh unstoppable.
This is also why I am worried about China. They have capitalized so much on their resentful adversity to the USA's ideology that they might be(come) a mere nemesis, i.e. embodying the same root corruption for the purpose of destroying the other faction.
The whole reason why humankind is still in such turmoil and distress is because we keep inheriting the fear complexes from the past. Fear of death makes people only focus on their own little lifespan, even if they think they aren't. - it is a spiritual starvation.
Do you remember the TNG scene with the 'terrorist' and Beverly, about winners and losers? One of my favorite scenes. He mentions how the Federation built their fancy, evolved society on the barbarity of the past. I call that awareness of the "karmic burden". Where it exists, true transformation of the pain of the past can happen. But self-admiration can make blind to it and then corruption sets in again. ... This is why alien civilizations like the romulans and klingons are a blessing to humankind. They provide the external testing influence to bring out the actual truth of the matter - showing how the Federation deals with things when they get difficult.

Tactics are just as important in Politics as they are in Combat.
Picard pilots his words as well as he pilots the Enterprise. And quite often with MORE devastating effect.
