  • The super rare scrapyard 1983 AMC Eagle SX/4 gets working headlights and a quick facelift with heat-cured bumper black. The engine reveals what's been going TAP TAP TAP - that gets fixed, and the old mill gets cleaned and some tractor paint. The car sees actual soap and water for the first time and seems to appreciate new transmission and engine mounts as we work to generally prepare the car for the rigors of daily driving. ► Check out the Full AMC Eagle SX-4 PLAYLIST: • Super RARE 1983 AMC Ea...

      Even though this reply is one year late I'm glad someone said it. I have grown very tired of the "will it run and drive" type videos and then never see it again. Actually that's not true, you'll see it again in a pan shot of the back pasture dying a second death.@@Richies_Garage

      Yep, I agree! I run exclusively older fun cars just because I can. It takes a lot of work to keep them from rusting into the ground but it's still worth it.

    I know i'm late to the party here, but as an old jeep/amc smoothbrain somewhat enthusiast, i believe this is a Renix 4.0 engine. What convinced me of this was the battle you had to go through in order to get the oil filter off. The Renix 4.0 in my Comanche took a metric sized oil filter; they put a sticker under the hood from factory warning against using a standard 3/4 oil filter. It would cross thread on and become nearly impossible to remove. You can order a stud from an HO 4.0 that will thread into the bolt and convert it to take a 3/4 oil filter.
    They're decent engines. They don't make as much power as the HO, and there's a ton of unnecessary wiring and vacuum nonsense. But that can be culled down some.
    Also, the central axle disconnect can be bypassed for free. You were on the right track, you just have to remove the c clips inside of the actuator and move the rod over and the re-apply the clips so that the fork is always engaging the locking ring on the axle splines. I did this on my Comanche as well, because that is a failure point that will cause your 4x4 to not function. It applies more wear and tear on your front diff, but i'm guessing you're like me and won't mind.
    Hope this helps. Enjoying the videos !

    Love the Eagle, especially this SX/4 version. My friend had an '87 Eagle wagon and it was a rusty beast, could go over/through anything. I can't with my lack of mechanical skill even imagine going out for dinner, Mexican or Chinese, in a vehicle that seems ready at any moment to leave me stranded along the way. But there's a great chasm of difference in skill and cojones existing here between your good self and my unimagined self.
    Well Dal'un you and Kevin are of the same cut of jib, nautically speaking. I'm pleased to hear you are on your way to be up in Iowa with Kevin, Mook and Josh. I look forward to finding an upload on one channel or the other from your trip there to see what you were up to.
    Best Regards, I know you'll eventually get that Eagle running as a dependable daily driver.
    So many cars I've owned and let go for one reason or another, the one I most miss today was my 2001 Jeep Wrangler with a manual and hard top. I do currently have an '03 Tundra extra cab SR5 V8 auto tranny with 165K on the clock. It has lived in the SW all these years so the frame is like new and I've put some $'s in upkeep since I purchased it 2 yeras ago. My mechanic is old school and has been good to me since I came to know him. He is someone that enjoys mechanics even the frustrating aspects of poor design and has seen a lot and fixed/repaired tons that gives me confidence in his work. My Tundra is my last ever pickup, she'll outlive me. I just hope the starter does too!
    I have a 'mouser' that inspects both of my vehicles every night out in here the desert SW, Irish Spring and mint oil also to try and deter them vermin.
    I digress, back to the Eagle:
    Though it sure looks like there's a lot of digging into the mechanicals and R & R to be done first, again let me say, I'm sure as much as you seem excited with this Eagle being a manual and four wheel drive edition,
    you will make this a daily driver.
    Rock on Dal'un. 👍
    I wish for you to sell some heaping helping hoards of merch so you can afford the foray.

    Listening to this thing run with my eyes shut cracks me up. It sounds like EVERY old military truck in every old war movie ever made. Haha

    I used red fingernail-paint to touch-up my house #'s. Two weeks of sun-exposure later and it turned poo-brown... Great Vid!

    As an over the road sales person in the 1960's through the 1980's and putting 50k on cars per year I drove AMC. I put around 150k on them before trading for a new one. I never had a major problem, got great economy, never had an oil burner, never had a transmission problem. I could not have had better quality cars to haul my hinney around. Wish they still made them.

      I'm 29, but have owned a few of them. Every one has been a good car, cheaply made but good where it counts. Nothing wrong with that

    This is one of the most entertaining car videos with a solo host I have ever watched! The push rod reveal was excellent. Keep up the great work!

    This can't be the end. This is like a cliffhanger at the end of a TV show season. And then they cancel it on you. What happened to the AMC?😂 Still had fun watching though. Thanks for taking us along.

    I had a Ford ranger that was dumping out 2quarts of oil a day.(rear seal) I added a quart of Lucas stop leek in it and after about a week (100 miles) no more leek. Drove it for 2 years added a quart to each oil change and never leaked.

    There are 2 Bolts behind the steering wheel that when you tighten them up the wiggling steering wheel will be fixed. Had that problem on my 89 Cherokee and the wheel was solid as a rock after I tightened those Bolts. Super easy and free to do

    • @PoleBarnGarage
      @PoleBarnGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4 bolts, and requires total disassembly of the column. Been there and done it! I'll get around to it one of these days

    • @luvtruck7464
      @luvtruck7464 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Pole Barn Garage I don't remember it being that hard, but wish you the best. Thought it was just pop the wheel off and take out the turn signal/Hazzard assembly and the Bolts were right behind that. But it's been 17 years since I did it lol

    Rislone makes a couple of products I haven't used the one you used I always use the ring seal repair on my 200 to 500,000 Mi engines. It does a pretty good job of coding the cylinder walls and reducing oil smoke.
    The stuff I get is in a bottle that looks just like the one you are using but it's thick like you were expecting. Like old STP

      Some of that lifter noise may even go away after you change the oil next time. I’m sure you know to change it’s warmed up.
