  • Taking two cars, the Holey Goat 1970 Pontiac GTO and my son's 1959 Ford sedan on a cross country, 1,200-mile road trip to drag race at No Name Nationals in Sikeston, MO Missouri, and then autocross at Ford Fest in Bowling Green, KY. Will we survive?

This is why you are now my favorite car channel. Real down to earth people, working on real cool cars. In my opinion JD'S 59 Ford was the coolest looking car at the show. What is really great is that JD worked on so many aspects of the build, he can truly say he helped built, and paint the car.

Epic journey! I had just seen JD’s Ford in the background of Dylan McCool’s video when the email came up that you posted this! JD has a real future as a race car owner - just needs a better driver! You are right - gotta drive it to failure and fix it or live scared. @@PoleBarnGarage Well, I drove it to and from my last car show of the season today and determined that at 55MPH, without a cool down stop, the clutch slips and eventually smokes and stops forward progress at 32 miles, which is exactly the distance from my house to the show.....SUCCESS!!!

23:25 You nailed it right there. I absolutely LOVED to drive my '72 ford or one of my Torinos at night. I would just jump in the car and drive and listen to the sound of the tires and the drone of the engine and enjoy the feel of my vehicle. I was in a happy place in my own personal space. Sometimes it is riding with someone else in an older car, I remember when the old mechanic took me on a test drive one night in the '75 Gran Torino he sold me in '99. That test drive while listening to his various stories while we flew down the interstate and various backroads is a test drive I'll never forget. The really memorable drives always seem to be at night. When I was working late night shift retail in the late '90s at 18/19 years old I would sometimes just go drive on my lunch break at night in my '72 Ford. Just cruising at night with 8 cylinders........there really is nothing else like it.

Being a Pontiac guy and the Father of James Hartwick of Hartwick Performance, I felt a bit out of place at Ford Fest. But as I stood in front of Godzilla I believe the distinctive cadence of a Pontiac V8 made me turn to see the Holey Goat rumble by. It nearly made me weak in the knees! I love Fords, but the danger of having them Exclusively all in one place makes even the most radical fox body etc, seem almost commonplace.
The Holey Goat can never understand that word. Lol
It was great to meet you and JD. I sorta saw my Son and I as older versions of you guys. It doesn't even matter if JD decides later cars aren't his thing (hush my mouth) these are forever memories with Dad. Great job all around. Hope to see you guys out and about again!

The video turned out to be a 10 out of ten Dalton.
The '59 is quite a stunner in the color scheme chosen and again I'm green with envy. There had been a '59 for sale in my town on a 'rip-off' price gouge lot for several months that I drove past and so desperately wanted to own. Unfortunately I hadn't the means to keep it safe from the harsh elements of Arizona sun baked summers and certainly not the first notion of how I would make it a runner as you have with JD's '59.
Just to say here, I once owned a 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Barritz with a 425ci engine that had blown front and rear mains. The oil that blew out of the engine would coat the under belly of my beautiful Caddy to the point that every stop light she smoked mercilessly. [Embarrasingly]
That went on for at least a year with the starter getting soaked in engine oil to the point where the starter couln't operate after awhile.
All rebuilt starters didn't match up so I had the where with all mechanically then to disassemble the rebuit starter, remove the guts and place them in the original housing of the oil fouled starter after a clean up.
I do miss my 'Dina' which she became known as for the fact she was a true dinasaur. A factory 8 track player did work and I had a Hank Williams tape that was always playing for road trips.
I had a receiver attached to the frame in order to pull a short 15' Lo-Liner Aristcrat camp trailer and she did so with aplomb. Even over the 'Grapevine' of Interstae 5, in California when I left Long Beach and moved back home to the Bay Area up north (400 miles) with the Lo-Liner stuffed to the gills. So I'm quite familiar with a smokey under belly with a old worn engine as you encoutered on your 1,200 road trip.
Great time for you all and your advice at the end is so on point, just do it!

ILL to Green Bay for a "symposium." In the winter. While there a foot of snow fell. Got there and got home (praying a little) with absolutely no issues. Yes. Drive them. I love how you were sawing away on the '59 steering yet all the exterior shots would suggest 'steering' is a matter of simply inducing additional body roll at the front while lifting a rear wheel allowing 'steering' to be done from the rear!

    BTW
some 20 years ago me and a buddy took a cross country and back road trip, [California to South Carolinaand back] in a rented Lincoln Town Car* where we took time to ride up to the top of the observation section of the 'Gateway Arch' what agreat memory. Too bad you were rushing by and couldn't take JD up for a ride.
I know one day you'll strike it off your 'bucket list' though now that I've put in your head to do so.
*It was shortly after our mega free milage road trip that free miles became limited to the closest three states from where the car was rented. I believe it was a Buget Rental.

I discovered your channel the other day while watching junkyard digs. That lead me to buying a “I voted for Waylon” bumper sticker on EBay. Now I’m in the middle binge watching my new favorite channel. Excellent work👍

I never doubted that 390. I’ve seen them run and run good with hardly no compression. We would have to pull it off to get up enough compression to run. The starter wouldn’t spin it fast enough

Now that I've seen all of the '59 Ford's build and end to a big auto roundup I think it's earned a new NewHollard Ford blue on its dash and interior areas where the lighter blue is and a final step of taking the hood off its hinges and giving it a proper White like it would have had if had been designed at the factory J.D. deserves more gun time and the underside of the hood would be a great tool for him to limber up his wrists and keep the gun perpendicular to all the hood under bracing and keeping it from dull coating on him!! I think you're doing a great job teaching him while he is still pliable like a sponge teenage years are tough my son was always " I know dad !" ( secretly he was googling things we were supposed to be doing together ) I engaged with him too late let him play Wii too much !! Just saw the first Ford wagon episode too that build looks like fun too !!
