Part 1: Owning a used Mercedes Benz out of warranty: 2011 E550 4matic sedan

- Is it a bad idea? Can self-maintaining these cars keep cost of ownership down? Follow along as I experience firsthand, the answers to these questions, with my newly acquired 2011 E550. I will outline my first year of ownership, with 1 updated video each month, all maintenance, repairs, and cost. If you've ever thought about owning one of these terrific automobiles, but are nervous about maintenance and repairs, this might be the series of videos to help sway you one way or the other. Enjoy!

I will follow your lead. Recently purchased 2010 E550 sedan with 52350 miles in April 2020. Lease vehicle followed by single owner that traded it in on new Mercedes. Found out a Dentist bought it used for his dilletant wife who drove less than 4500 miles a year. Carfax noted that a service package had been bought and used to fully service the vehicle at 45k miles. I immediately changed oil and filter using Mobil 1 European 10w-40, changed air filters and installed NGK iredium spark plugs. Had the following services performed: Transmission, rear end, coolant and brake fluid flush, new batteries.

I bought my 2010 E550 white four-door sedan back in 2013 so I've had it a little over 10 years had 20,000 miles on it when I got it. Paid 45k plus tax. Been a very excellent car. Outside of warranty all I've replaced was a starter and a headlight. It does have the shaking now and I guess it's probably going to be the engine mounts or and transmission mounts. Definitely a keeper of a car. This vehicle was definitely a head turner back when it was new. You were a big shot in this car at the time.
Part of the appeal, to me, is the depreciation really benefits the used car buyer with these machines. Yours is a fine example of what can be expected. I believe the window sticker on my 2011 showed just north of $70k when new. Yours was likely in that ballpark, options difference and one extra year of inflation notwithstanding.
You bought yours for $45k after just a few years of use and 20k miles. Excellent value on the used market.
Do you still have yours? Just had the transmission mount changed at a shop and the shaking went away from what I'm told I was not there to see it yet. I took a chance on one of your later videos about shaking at idle, it has been doing it for a couple years or more now. Had a couple front bent rims too that were causing vibration issues and I did not know it probably since it I first bought it. Got some later model w212 rims for it and now it rides a lot smoother. Those aluminum rims bend really easy unfortunately with the low profile tires. I got the car ceramic coated about 3 years ago along with paint correction and now I have waxed it in years and it looks awesome. Always garage. Always a pleasure to slip in behind the wheel of this sturdy reliable machine. Not worth much anymore due to depreciation but it's so much car for the money especially in good condition as mine is

I'm on my 3rd E-Class. (02)W210, (07)W211, and now a (11)W212 all 4Matics. best cars for the money. My TCO on the first two E-Class's was less than my TCO for my 1992 full sized Ford Bronco. Original sticker was over $90K on my 2011 E550, I picked it up 2 months ago with 55K miles, 1-owner, loaded with P1, P2, P3. You will love this car. Find a local MB Tech to perform service you cant. Oil changes are easy. Brake pads are easy. My previous two were V6's, but I move to the V8 this time around, and that engine bay is a little tight. ;-) Good luck - looking forward to your videos.

I should mention, I did opt for a 3yr, unlimited mile extended warranty that was offered by my dealer, for $2500 as there are a few repair items that can get costly quick - Airmatic among them. I've also found a number of online vendors that supply OEM parts at a fraction of the dealer costs. I've done alternators, water pumps, radiators, filters (air, cabin & oil), brake pads, interior trim and more. Aside from having a good set of metric tools at your disposal, I;ve only encountered a handful of specialized MB tools required for some maintenance items.
I’m looking at a W212 550 with about 65k miles on it. Dealer wants $12,000 for it roughly. What’s the website that you’re referring to that sells the OEM parts?

Saw the video (twice) once before I bought my 2013 E550 4Matic (a week ago) and now, Drove it from Charlottesvile(Va) to Houston.
Love the ride and power of the V8 (my 1st V8). Tire Pressure System stayed on the whole trip.
Made stops in Garner, NC Atlanta, Ga and Slidell, La before coming home.
Other than that been watching your other 10 videos waiting for #11
Any thoughts why the TPS stayed on??? And I did something on the key fob all doors unlocked the 4 windows/moonroof came down halfway
Thank you for watching and for your patience. Things have obviously been a little out of whack lately. Depending on what the tpms reads per tire, (as in one tire might be zeroed out) my first guess would be a bad tpms sensor, or multiple bad sensors. Most tire shops should be able to replace them fairly inexpensively.

I have an 2011 E550 as well and my air suspension system completely failed. I recommend every 100,000 miles to get it checked. I was about 120,000 miles when mine went out and $7,500 later it’s fixed and I have a whole new system. I would just keep that in mind!
When my e550 airmatic failed i did 4sides with coilovers for a price of one airmatic suspension 😂
Did you have any problems with in the 100k miles, was looking at 13 with 50k miles
@@jankoakovic3564 no I had no issues until it was around 120,000 miles. If you’re looking at a 2013 E550 I would do your research on the air suspension. I live in a cold climate which leads to the air suspension to fail a lot faster. I also started to park it outside of the garage which my mechanic said could be the issue.
@@jankoakovic3564 like the person previously said it is cheaper to convert it to coils. I just like the way that the airmatic system is, due to me living where it snows it’s very helpful for different road conditions. I was thinking of converting it but I haven’t done enough research on it yet. Also depending on where you live if you plan on selling the car late down it could be worth less if you convert to coils.

I have an e350 4matic, with the V6 ... Vibration when cold in gear (R, and D, not park or N) / at first I thought it needed a tune up but now I'm thinking I should inspect all of the mounts . In your #2 video you stated that on the bench the new mount didn't seem more rigid ; but it ended up fixing your problem. Today Im going to use a jack and wood block to support the engine while I put the car in gear to try and pin point whether it's engine or trans mounts.
It's a good idea to check. Yes, the transmission mount did not feel sloppy in my hands, actually it felt rather tight, but I already had it out and the new one in my possession. After replacing it, the realization hit me that it's probably just impossible to duplicate the stresses these mounts see while controlling vibration and harmonics. My vibration wasn't extreme, but noticeable. After replacing the mount, it was as smooth as silk.

@@capth00k gotcha. Might need engine and transmission mounts replaced, then. If it has never been done, it probably will at over a decade old.
@@cdm121880 Well, I just did a little brake throttle test - and the engine isn't moving all that much ; Ive seen other videos of the engine torquing hard to one side with a bad mount - so I'm going to go ahead and order the trans mount first like you did. If that rectifies the problem i'll be elated. Just did an MAF clean, and throttle body clean yesterday and replaced air filters - plugs next, so hopefully i'll have her in tip top shape soon. Love the car, these are worlds apart from my old '06 jaguar XJ8 (x350) ; while that was faster these are so much more refined.

Clint, Thanks for posting this video. I'm looking at one right now and the car seems to be clean and well taken care of. Its a one owner car and it has 157K miles and I'm so afraid of what might happen after purchasing a high mileage car. How many miles was it when you purchased yours? Looking forward to watching all of your segments on this car.
Thank you. 80k at time of purchase. The fear is perfectly normal and not without merit. However, most cars of this age and class will be a gamble on the used car market. Proper service history is absolutely essential to finding the right car. Good luck!

Clint, thanks for the info on the E550. I have owned multiple German imports in past. My current daily is a 2010 Jag XF Supercharged, got it tuned to 490whp. I have paid it off, when it's time my next car will be an E550. My question is in terms of reliability how do the 2010 to 2011 E550s stack up to the newer 2012 to 2014 models with the turbo V8? Thanks.
Joshua, thanks for watching! I can't comment on the reliability of the 12-14 turbo models, as I have no experience with them. However, from what I've read, they are a robust unit as well. Just hard to find.

@@autotrimmers6353 , for what it is, a 500hp Euro Sedan I would say overall not bad in terms of reliability. The cooling system is its weak point, resulting in about 1500-2000 dollars for water pump/cross pipe replacements. Outside of that no major issues.

If it isn’t too personal, what did you pay ? It seems like the price is anywhere between $15-18K with roughly 100K miles.

Everyone tells me to never change the transmission fluid. Can you explain why I should? Mine is a 2011 with 83,000 miles
Because if there is a fluid and a filter, both of those items have a lifespan. I have heard of people who have a ton of miles without changing fluid, but then suddenly do change fluid, then experience failure. Might be some truth to the theory that the clutches become reliant on the friction material in the fluid. I can't say for sure, but it seems common.
However, I've never known someone to have followed the manufacturer's recommended fluid change interval and experience a premature, fluid related failure. They recommend these fluid and filter replacement intervals for a reason, and I trust the engineers who built these components to know better than the general public.

You won't find the 2010-2011 E550 without airmatic, however, you might look at the E350 that offers metal coil springs, or perhaps a 2012-2013 E550 (although they are very hard to find, and feature a different engine than the 2010-2011 E550), that is available with or without airmatic.
@@cdm121880 Yes, I own a 2013 E550 4MATIC without the airmatic and LOVE IT! It is truly a joy to drive, holds all passengers in comfort and the trunk can swallow almost everything...

Im looking to purchase a facelift E550 4 matic with approximately 70k miles. Should i go ahead and buy it or should i go with the E350?
Depends on how much you value acceleration over fuel economy. I can't speak to the economy of the E350, but I'm certain it's noticeably better than the V8. The facelift E550 is also a different engine than the 5.5 liter here. Smaller displacement with a pair of turbos. Either way, you'll be likely to enjoy the driving experience.

Lol, well that's one way to make a fella feel old. I didn't buy it from a Mercedes dealership, so I'm not sure how their warranties work when you're buying one at this age and mileage from a third party dealership. The "warranties" offered from my local credit union really don't cover most of the wear items that might cost me the most money out-of-pocket, anyhow. I asked a lot of questions regarding this, and things like engine mounts, airmatic suspension faults, etc. were described as routine maintenance and clearly explained to me as not covered under that plan. So, I thought I would roll the dice and trust that the engine, transmission, and differentials will outlast my ownership. Cheers!
You’re just more mature than me probably, that airmatic system seems to be biggest thing people don’t want to tackle , I used to drive a w140 2001 and when it’s suspension went out would cost more than you can resell the car to repair! By a local star tech shop I got here. Thanks !
Not a problem. I believe the 140 and 220 cars probably hurt the airmatic reputation badly. But, those issues certainly seem to have been worked out as I don't see or hear about nearly as many issues with 212 (or even 210 and 211) and 221 cars. I'm sure there are exceptions.
You don't buy E550 to save money. We all know the cost of oil change etc. is more expensive than the Japanese vehicles. You can buy it for one-quarter of the original cost and put away 200$ a month for service and repairs. You will have the most satisfying ownership experience. The only thing is, you must buy a well kept and serviced one. I bought mine 2010 e550 (2wd) NA 2 years ago at 78k miles. So far I am like a kid in a candy store. No problems and can't wait to get in and drive it. Amazing car has P1, P2 and glass roof with AMG package.

I have one too, 2011 E550 with the AMG sport package. I get compliments all the time, literally. Mine is white with the tan and black interior. The V8 sound turns head. Love my car.

I am in the process of either buying an E350 4matic with 72,000 miles or an E 550 4matic with 108000 MI I have been maintained at the dealership and both are 2011 the 550 is 3000 more what's your take?
The 350 is one that I did not test drive as I did want the v8. However, if the acceleration is not important to you, I would imagine that the lower mileage v6 would be the better choice here, given it was maintained properly. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. I had no major issues during my ownership. The car was a pleasure to own, but I have moved on as my needs changed and I have purchased a new pickup truck. However, my plan is to continue with Mercedes content on this channel, as folks seem to enjoy it. So, the videos posted most recently have focused on my other 2 Mercedes products.

Hello Client, 2016 E350 or E550 which is more reliable, and how reliable are they. I have 2014 BMW 550i and i always prefer V8 but men, BMW 550i is so expensive to maintain.
Hello! I don't have any personal experience with the E350, but from my understanding the V6 is very reliable and a lower cylinder count typically means slightly lower maintenance costs (less oil capacity, less spark plugs, etc.). If the extra power of the V8 is not essential to you, I'd imagine that the E350 would be a fine choice. Thanks for watching!
I got my first car still being a Chevy Impala, but I been turning my head at the S class from 2008 but I heard lots of issues on those, as to the E class being a good reliable car, it looks just as luxurious as the S class but a clean look, still luxurious and having lot of features too. I kinda wanna buy this as my second car too. I know the the 2012 models have the LEDS on the front bumper compared to the older ones having the fog lights. I plan to watch the series as I save for one to buy. I want a black one for sure. I’m a detailer who loves clean cars.
Mercedes had some quality control issues in the late 90's and early 00's. By the time the w212 rolled out in 2010, the issues were mostly worked out. Most owners who mile these cars up to the quarter million mile mark do not typically report major issues with ownership.
Only thing that scares me about this car, is the Air Suspension
Absolutely. That's a very realistic fear. My girlfriend now has a 2015 E350 4matic with metal springs, and it rides very well. Personally, the difference isn't palpable enough for me to justify the higher repair cost.

i have a 2012 E 550 v8 4.6 twin turbo its a beast.
its got 247k on the clock bought new back in 2011
i hit the track 2 times a week 500hp 510 torque ive done a few things too it. runn only liqui moly .. amsoil or pintosin motor oil!
and put K&N air filters in... a must ........the car will out last you my friend... trust me i know .
I'm afraid if I ever drive a twin turbo E class, I'll have to empty my wallet and buy one. Lol. Luckily for me, they're pretty hard to find.

These are pretty solid versions of the e550 , the previous body 07--09 were very unreliable and the transmission always goes out there was a major lawsuit for the 07-09, and 07-2010 amg's(all models)
I have hear that quality control was very poor for Mercedes in the w210 and w211 era. Seems to be much improved with the w212's. Thanks for the comment!

You also drive bigger engines in the US, the E 550 is not avalible in europe.
Here 90% of all E class w212 is 200/220 cdi.
My E class is a E 200 cdi (diesel) , 136 hp, 5-gear automatic, Elegance, modelyear 2010.

That is up to the buyer. Personally, I like the dynamic drivers seat. Massage is nice, and side bolsters hug you in corners.
@@cdm121880 we used to own a E350cdi awd, didn’t have the massaging seats but had everything else and we had it for 120k kms so I’m looking for smthn as good but a bit less, or even a V6 model, and Euro spec to be exact

You just need some tinted windows some k&n air filters, and resonator and muffler delete, itll feel as fast as any E class AMG and itll sound nearly the same
The windows are tinted. I'm not a huge fan of a loud daily driver, I prefer it to be docile. Part of the appeal, to me... is just how quiet this car is. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment!

Ive owned many cars and while I appreciate all German autos the cost of maintaining these highly sensitive cars compared to all around value I dont think they are worth the money. You will absolutely spend 10 to 15k keeping this car on the road in the first 100k if not more, for that same 10 to 15k a person can purchase a Toyota and put 300 thousand miles on it pretty much changing the oil and wear and tare items. But how one looks when arriving is important. unless you own a MB analyzer you will not perform much work on these cars and you will not take it to auto zone and plug it in and get your answer! I promise. Nice cars and come with a hefty cost of ownership, prepare yourself for a love hate relationship.
All accurate. You just have to decide whether or not the driving dynamics are worth the added cost of maintenance and repairs. I grew up with Toyotas and have owned several, including Lexus. Great cars, but none that I've owned gave me the driving experience of this E550.

Well, I wanted to avoid discussing the exact price paid for it, since values can fluctuate depending on regional markets. It was not a "steal", but I wasn't looking for the cheapest v8 E class available, rather the most well cared for. I will say that the original MSRP was just north of $70k, and I purchased it for under 25% of the original price. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment!

And I have more than enough money. However, over $2000 is quite a bit of money on a 9 year old car and if you paid less than $1000 you do not have a 4matic.

@@Mr921kevin not sure that is relevant. The w220 was notoriously troublesome and expensive to maintain. You're talking about a 2001 S Class vs. a 2011 E Class. Very different machines.

@@Mr921kevin well, they actually are quite different. Advancements in technology over a decade are overwhelming and the S Class cars are always more complex than the E Class cars. However, I'm not here to convince you of that. I have no affiliation with MB, so it doesn't affect me at all. I will say that, if you've convinced yourself that every Mercedes is terrible because you had problems with a w220, you might be wasting your time watching Mercedes-centric videos on TH-cam.
Very poor review, instead of telling us about the car, you're telling us about your inability to fix the car.
