In this video I unbox a brand new set of Kevin Lee Black Diamond pricking irons. I review and compare them with the other pricking irons I was considering before purchase and the reasons I chose Kevin Lee irons. I also punch out a row of stitching holes and stitch them to test the look of the stitches.

I would advise using a pulling block when removing the irons from the leather. It reduces the risk of breaking a tooth, and there is less stress on the hole. Also, especially with thicker leather, it makes easier to remove the iron
I designed and printed one a few videos back but normally I work with thin leathers so I find that I don't use it much.
Hi there, thanks for all the great videos. I wanted to get your opinion on this. I'm doing a wallet out of 5 mm leather with 2 layers so my edge thickness is about 8mm. Which of the pricking irons you own and have reviewed would you choose to use or would you punch each side separately and then glue them together? Thanks! Or would you use an awl?
Most modern pricking irons have long thin prongs and can easily punch through 4mm leather, I would recommend punching the two halves of the leather separately as the stitching on the back side will definitely be neater. My Crimson Irons, Sinabroks and these Kevin Lee irons are all capable of this, just depends on personal preference. Punching through 8mm is very difficult so an awl would be needed to be used for that.
Would you be able to help clear something up for me? I'm using Amy Roke pricking irons (french style) and when I follow my scribe line I end up with a stitch line where I can still see my scribe line right above the stitching. Is that normal or are you supposed to straddle the scribe line so it gets hidden under the thread?

The marked line should only be marked and not scratched into the leather. After hammering down stitches this line will also fade to where it is almost invisible. Placing irons centered on your stitching line is difficult and will often result in a stitching line not straight.

What is the best pricking iron, KS blade, sinabroks, or there
KS Blade and Sinabroks are extremely similar. They are both good and basically the same price so just get the one that you think looks best.
What do you think about this style of pricking iron (Roke, Kevin Lee, Crimson Hides etc) vs Sinabroks, KS Blade, 4Z?
I have a set of 4Z irons in 2.7, 3.38 and 4.0 but i find it hard to line them up with my stitching line at times. Is it easier with this style? Any other pros/cons?
The irons with replaceable prongs may save you a few dollars if you break a prong and the 4Z allow you punch inverse by rotating the prongs, other than that there is not much benefit. The other style has a slimmer profile which makes them easier to see what you are punching and are generally cheaper. It is worth giving a different style/brand a go for your next irons.

my 2 teeth 3mm kevin lee blck diamond iron was crooked after punching 3mm thick leather. so sad 😭

nope.. i cant afford to wait since i am using it almost everyday.. i just fixed by myself using plier. not perfect but still usable..
@@HMMMHEHEHEH It is strange for irons to bend as they are quite hard steel and should be more likely to just break. I would still message Kevin Lee with some feedback and see what he says.
I had the same thing happen to me with my 2 teeth, 3mm Kevin Lee silver iron. The metal split. I assumed it was my fault and have ordered a replacement. I hope this new one doesn't break, too.
@@jules75 already ditch my KL irons and knife, the 8 teeth one was accidentally fell from my table and bent 2 teeth. my skiving knife from KL was snapped from its handle after it fell from my table. i decided to purchase replacement from other maker like since craft and crimson hides.. i cannot lie that i love KL stitches more than those 2, but at least they gave us clarity on what steel they are using...

Great video but I don't think he is in business anymore. There is nothing on his sight about these pricking irons and his Instagram page is gone. If I am wrong, please let me know.

They are active. He was redesigning his website and upgrading his manufacturing.
