Here in Brazil Tesla hasn't done much because of their luxury positioning on our market and lack of support. BYD however is allegedly the reason we no longer have tax exemptions on imported EVs. They are stirring the market and annoying the big brands.
Easy to do when you steal tech others developed and have production subsidized by a state that indirectly controls the company and with that the software while looking at cars as surveillance platforms. It's a trojan horse.
Yep back in the 70s and 80s American car companies were making BIG gas guzzling cars that people didn’t really need. Japanese cars came in and took over. I feel like it’s the same with Tesla and BYD

Here in SEAsia they are gaining a lot of popularity. Literally from one month where I didn't see any of those BYD cars to the next where I saw then quite often until now where I see those cars every day multiple times.
Here in brazil they bought a closed Ford factory, supposed to start operations in mid-late 2024. And in Brazilians car market they probably will push all the prices down.

As an Australian motor mechanic, I think that BYD will do well here if/when they have a good warranty record and support from the factory. Most current legacy ICE vehicle companies are becoming very difficult to extract warranty claims out of, the most notable exceptions being Hyundai and Kia who are easy to deal with. The BYD pricing is compelling, as long as the long perceived 'poor Chinese quality' becomes a thing of the past, they'll grow here.

I was in Mexico City less than a month ago, and was absolutely stunned by how commonplace these Chinese TVs are there. They really are having a huge impact in a short time.

Many OEM companies make good appliances and sell them at a cheaper price than the actual brand that contract them. Many of those big name brands are just that, a brand that contract the big OEM companies and set high or low quality standards based on what they are willing to pay.
Got a BYD Atto 3, 5 months ago. My first EV after upgrading from a Hyundai I10. Very satisfied so far. Absolutely no issues so far and it more or less drives itself on the highway with the adaptive speed control

Here in Brazil BYD is dominating! The Dolphin is everywhere, being priced cheaper than many SUVs available on the market. There are reports of people using them at Uber with almost 100.000 kilometers without problems. GWM is also growing up over here, and Volkswagen is left behind offering zero hybrid cars. Do I think BYD will take over? I think it already took!
I already drive a Lynk & Co 01, another Chinese car (Volvo collaboration). The car is amazing value for the price. I'd get another Chinese car in a heartbeat. I don't get the distrust by some people. China makes great products, including cars. I'm not a nationalist, I'm a consumer. I just want the best value my money can buy. If European or US manufacturers want me to buy their cars, they need to step up their game, and give me a good reason to do so.

I was a material planner for a leading electric agri mfg in 2021 and we were heavily considering their blade battery designs. Safety being the biggest pro. Would have been a good move but then you become entirely dependent and that wasn't ideal for us. Great vid. Thanks!

The rise of BYD reminds me of Hyundai automotive in the 1980s. A very similar story arc. On a related note, it would be interesting for you to look into Geely. Geely owns the Volvo and Lotus car brands as well as having major relationships with Daimler and Renault. Its business strategy is very different from BYD, but it shares the low-cost Chinese manufacturing base and deep history in both ICE and electric vehicles. BYD's advantage selling into North America and Europe is that is already owns brands with a rich history and positive customer image. Volvo-BYD is rolling out an all-electric lineup over the next few years. Whether it will go after the $30,000 and under market in the US is unknown.
Here in Brazil, they are growing in Uber drivers with the Dolphin. They are comfortable, low taxes, and most important: they don't run on fuel, which is the main cost of driving Uber here, since our fuel prices are so high. Brazil has 1.6 million app drivers.
Is anyone old enough to remember when Great Wall Motors 1st entered Australia? Their Utes were, let's say, less than great. But within 12 months they had improved quality, interior design and safety. MG have done the same. I've looked at a number of BYD cars that I've seen parked in the local shops, etc. And I have to say that I'm tempted to try one out.
@@jjsadv They are only good for paved road light use. Not as good as the likes of Triton or Ranger in off road. But they are perfectly good for situations where reliability is not a concern. Its a weird statement, but thats how a few GW friends put it, all of them are tradies. to them its the perfect throw away car for 3-4 years while they save up for a hilux, if its not for me having bought a triton last year, i would have gotten a GW now. it feels like a modern car with all the bells and whistles but doesnt break the bank.
I am from Brazil, here a see a lot of BYDs on the streets daily. But here they are very expensive, maybe due to the import taxes .... In general cars are very expensive here anyway, but EVs are even more costly. That being said, for those that can afford, BYD is the cheapest one.
In South Africa, electric vehicles come with a hefty price tag, making them unaffordable for many. Those committed to reducing vehicle emissions should closely examine BYD's competitive market pricing.
I work for a Company that has some products manufactured in China and as long as you have QA people in China the products are more realiable than products we have manufactured in Europe. I'd be happy to buy a BYD once they gey the software upgrade for their lane assist right
Same experience, I travel to China frequently to coordinate with local factories, the fact is the quality of the products we imported to US can't compare with what they made for their local markets. They can make top quality products these days, but we can't afford those anymore, the shipping cost, tariffs, and Americans are not willing to pay more either.

I own a BYD Tesla Model Y Standard Range and it has the greatest battery of any EV I could imagine. The charging curve is just the same and not depending on state of charge. You can plug in with 90 % and get 175 kW of charging. It’s nuts!
Being based in Germany I am very aware and like Chinese e-cars. Especially Geely and it's babies, like Polestar, Zeekr and Lotus do not get enough attention IMHO. Thanks for this episode! Great as always!

Well, nicely written, but full of lies and misrepresentations. Berkshire-Hathaway now owns maybe 3% of the company stock, not 10%. The got rid of most of that junk paper in last 5 months... BYD cars - especially in China - are seeing a huge increase in accidents due to faulty components or software, which is the main driver of the fall in sales (in other words: BYD cars are killing their owners in China at an astonishing rate, so people do not buy them, especially since they're comparable in pricing with Tesla). Tesla is being targeted by chinese government with severe restrictions, decreasing their sale artificially (main reason: Teslas are driving espionage tool)... So, RIvian is in huge financial hole, Polestar has just been left to die by it's CHINESE owners and Lucid... well, Lucid is a banner for EV failure. GM, VW and PSA all announced reducing/discontinuing EV production and EU just announced investigation into illegal practices by BYD/CCP/PRC (which seem to be so intertwined to be indistinguishable), so 2024 will be the last year for most of the china's REMAINING (as 30+ manufacturers in China closed in 2023) EV industry. BYD with it's poor quality will not survive. As for numbers: in 2023 BYD sold 1.575M cars (which is an inflated number, because they are selling their cars to dealers, who are left out-of-pocket if car goes unsold), while Tesla sold - AND DID IT DIRECTLY TO CONSUMER, SO THEIR NUMBER IS VERIFIABLY ACCURATE - 1.81 million cars...

The first BYD product I ever saw irl was a forklift, it was a few months after a watched a review of Doug DeMuro of a BYD EV, I was like wow they even make forklifts, but then I noticed buses and the whole other line up of vehicles.

Just watched your latest missiv. I've driven a Tesla model S (five years) and although i was happy with it, the build quality and the road noise in the cabin was not the best. I switched to a Nissan Ariya which is a better build but the software is not where it should be and i had a dead traction battery at 20k which was replaced under warranty(it took nissan three months to sort out out). Given the size of BYD and what I've learnt in this video i would be prepared to run one. I am convinced they would as good of not better than anything I've had or drive now.
And they are blocking the EV market from reaching the masses. In Europe all EV are super expensive right now. They just don't build affordable EV cars here, they are all high end.
Even with tariffs, the cost difference between current US EV market and the price of BYD vehicles could still potentially be a competitive business opportunity.

I agree with you. Lots of people talk down about Toyota. But if you see the other brands it makes zero sense for them to be investing so hard into EVs atm. Here in the US only Tesla is really selling very well. All other EVs sold at or under 40k units which is terrible. You can see the struggle and risks legacy automakers have with EVs watching VW, Ford, GM, and the Koreans. There are still so many issues with EVs. Plus EVs are so unaffordable and depreciate so fast as their batteries will become useless for the used car market buyer and new tech keeps making the older models obsolete. EVs are still not a viable option for most and won't be for many decades at the current pathetic rate. There is very little reason to believe EVs will get significantly more cheaper when so much that's been around for decades like homes and other cars keeps getting more expensive. EVs are loaded with all sorts of stupid gimmicks that will break eventually. So are ICE cars to be fair. But Toyota definitely better be investing tons of money into R&D for EVs. Looking into it and being ready if it does get better might be worth it.

If the "long range" Seagull was available for the price of the Kia Rio (< $17k) in the US, it could find a lot of buyers as commuter cars. The dual motor Song L would be right up my alley if it were available in the US for competitive prices. Note, the 251 miles for the Seagull is CLTC, which averages about 35% higher than EPA range estimates. So this would be ~162 miles EPA rated.

A few days ago, BYD announced that the price of its "Qin" is 79,800 yuan, about 11,500 US dollars. The Qin is a compact sedan, similar to the model 3, and such a car will never appear in the United States.
Gosh I hope they come to North America. We're getting absolutely gouged on car prices here in Canada, and there just aren't that many small, cheap cars to choose from anymore. We could use more competition.
To be fair though as a guy who owns a small cheap car...they just don't sell. I'm going based off the USA data so I assume it's even smaller for Canada. Lots of small subcompacts have incredibly small profits. The low sales just meant there was more money elsewhere. They were in a constant decline. It's hard to justify to automakers and the people who control the purse strings to fund a segment that brings in little money and has no future growth potential in the foreseeable future. Anyway after owning Mt Honda Fit and seeing its terrible quality and poor safety for this segment, I do not ever plan on owning a small "cheap" car ever again. I appreciate the gas mileage though.

@@NOBODY-oq1xr I think about it a lot. But I don't think you would be able to understand just how poorly handled small cars are here in the US...or were. You sit in one it's a penalty box. It lacks features that your first used car had. I'm pretty skinny and not tall yet it's somewhat cramped. They never deisgned these cars for American tastes. They were deisgned for Europe and then half heartily brought over. In terms of deisgn. Americans never really like hatchbacks. But trying to convert a hatchback to a sedan looks dorky. Like the Ford Fiesta or Chevy Sonic. Also safety. I will most certainly die hitting a tree in my Honda Fit. I will not survive hitting another Fit or especially a Camry or F-150. There is a market for small cars. But if they want to expand they really need to make desirable product's and stop the cost cutting. People on a budget didn't even buy small cars as going to the used car market for a bigger, nicer, prettier, better built car was more desirable.
Im Indian and BYD currently sells 2 or 3 models here in India. I wish they expand in India too cause what the Indian players such as Mahindra and Tata are doing is ,they are relaunching their combustion vehicles as EVs. Even though Mahindra announced its EV Subcompany ,but it will still be up not before 2025. And the reviews that I've seen of the BYD Atto3 ,BYD is definitelt value for money

I'd love to know about the battery charging speed and, most importantly availability of places where we could recharge. It is more important than range or esthetics in my opinion
The most important factors - residual value and running cost - will proof the sustainability of (Chinese) EVs over periods of 5 to 10 years. With Tesla dropping sales prices reduces the 2nd hand value and increases write-off for owners, making it harder to buy a new car. EVs must proof to be low on running cost and affordable. A manufacturer shake-out is inevitable.
in that sense for BYD both owning the cars and the manufacturing for the batteries that they need. They could factor that in. As the biggest sustainability point would be to make it economically viable to swap out that battery pack. Of the movable parts you might need to replace the wheels, breaks, tires. Like some might only need replacement every 10 years (a car lives about 20/30 years). For a company like BYD it would also mean that they can continu making money on the cars for replacing that battery pack. other companies could also tap in to that marked if they also want to do that on the EU marked. then you get even mor competition on both the cars and the batteries for them.

To me DJI has been excellent for a long time. My old Mavic Pro is built like a tank and taken a beating. Other than a broken prop (from user error) it has been flawless still to this day. I've also got sim racing gear from Moza that has been awesome too.
Here's the TWO reasons why: 1) Byd is a worldwide manufacturer and supplier and therefore has access to the latest technology designed around the world. And they were suppliers because of bang for buck. Meaning that they know the cost to make things and therefore could make similar or better tech for a much more affordable price. 2) Tesla was always doomed?! So many Tesla fanboys talk about the imaginary $25K Tesla. There are more affordable electric cars in Europe and Asia. And Africa buy cars from China and India. Like, less than $20K, even less than $10K. You're not competing with that. Tesla NEVER had a chance outside of America. At most, it was a "flex" car. A lot of countries can't afford their current line up, they oblige you to use their services and the countries which can afford their car, not only have domestic and regional alternatives, they also have a good public transit system. No one needs a long range electric. On top of that, American cars are not seen as reliable. People who paid attention to the international car world, knew this was going to happen sooner or later.
Musk is also a very controversial figure now. You have many that would never buy a car from Tesla simply because of politics (of which Elon had every opportunity to just keep quiet about, like a good CEO would).
My country is infested with these BYDs, it started a few years ago and electric models are being added to the market. As for the oldest models, they seem to keep in shape, and the newer models, some of them really look nice. If they don't start to explode everywhere, it looks very promising for BYD.
I don't think they will explode, I am talking about an unlikely worst case scenario. But BYD is good, as I said the newer EVs are nice, and early F0 models are still around.
The BYD brand is growing from strength to strength. Yes it started with ICE cars at first, but that's how it learned how to make vehicles correctly & to a high standard. So now they've finally entered the EU market they are ready to go, 5 star Euro NCAP awards to all their cars they're selling in the EU, that alone should send out the correct signals to buyers. Also, to be fair to their design, they look awesome now too! Yes I would buy one for sure. I've had EV's for the last 6 years and can say that these BYDs are on par if not ahead quality, finish and tech wise to their peers in the EU, Korea & US. This is what new to EV buyers have been waiting for, reliable, safe & cheap cars. They are going to absolutely grab the market share for sure. The next problem for them to solve is the infrastructure for charging, certainly here in Ireland. If they enter that market too, well that will close the circle won't it?
BYD is a big deal here in Costa Rica, except of course like with all cars the prices are almost double than what they are in other countries, so the Seagull here starts at $21,990...

Buyers should consider not just the cost of the product but also the quality of the relationship and mindset of the product's origin countries. Are they trying to destroy you with your hard earned money? One should ask before making a decision. Overly relaying on one nation is a dangerous business for future generations, especially Australia.

One missed opportunity in the 60s was the Japanese ICE Kei trucks. As service and delivery vans, these vehicles are massive sellers worldwide. The electric versions of these will do well.
We have heard those kind of stories before. In 1980s and 90s, the Japanese automakers took over the U.S. market, the Japanese consumer electronics took over the world market.

BYD is uninterested in sharing any genealogy of its components, parts or materials to ensure that they are not using slavery or conflict produced materials. Musk is correct that global car manufacturers cannot compete against that when slave level tactics are used to acquire materials. All of this is well documented.
I just love this channel but this video has a bit of error: You failed to mention that the figures from BYD are all BEV (battery electric vehicles) (even plug in hybrids etc..) When it comes to pure EV sales, tesla sold around 1.8 million cars in 2023, and BYD sold around 500k pure BEV vehicles.. So tesla is almost 4x bigger than BYD when it comes to pure EV sales
In Thailand BYD position them self not as a cheap car or affordable car company. Similar to the most China car companies, GWM, Deepal, AION. Their prices are around 3-5k usd cheaper than Tesla.
Over reliance on touchscreens.. Tesla enters the chat. Which is a real problem, boutons and switches are so much easier because you can feel what you are adjusting.. that being said it’s way cheaper and easily changeable. Tesla could be so much more, I believe more pressure and options are a good thing, but I also understand keeping manufacturing in house, which is definitely a good thing. I would probably buy one if the crash test was high enough and parts were available, the second one being why I stayed away from Tesla.
I stay in China, and i can attest to the fact that BYD has nice cars. A friend of mine has the BYD Han. A very nice and comfortable car. If i were to stay here indefinitely, i would buy this car
In China, thirty million motor vehicles are sold annually, with tens of thousands of cases involving fires in ICE vehicles. If the media intentionally reports, there will be even more news about ICE vehicles catching fire. In reality, the incidence of fires in EVs is actually lower than that of ICE vehicles.
Those were all plugin hybrids with an older NMC battery that's known to be defective. BYD stopped the production of that battery pack and their new LFP batteries are some of the safest on the EV market.
Here in Ecuador they're slowly arriving to the common people. We've had BYD EV taxis and busses for more than 5 year already and they work fine. The dolphin is at 27000 USD . I hope that the seagull comes soon. Though I've heard prices will drop massively by 2025 so if you're not in a hurry probably is worth waiting.
Not a chance I would buy one, I'm coming off a model x and that was the worst experience I ever had with a car, 6 weeks on and off at tesla repair facility to start that ownership experiance and numerous times sitting in murder parking lots charging just to get home from fishing trips, when you have a boat or snowmobile trailer you have to unhook to charge and having a crazy person lose their crap on me because I dared to charge past 80% on a long weekend are just a few reasons why I am done with electric, went back to hybrid Lexus 450 hybrid and don't think about charge stations or door that jammed because you opened it to let your kid in.
@@walden6272 but the more expensive model Y out sold BYD's several best selling entry level models combined which costs only half or even 1/3 the price. Cheap entry level class of vehicles have way less profit margin.
Even though they do not have the best margins in the auto business I think this is by design as they see that almost all other auto manufacturers is scaling down their EV efforts, there is just one way I see this ending. BYD also supplies batteries to Tesla..

In Europe the base model 3 is 5000.- cheaper than the byd seal. with tesla's supercharger network is doesn't make any sense to buy a byd. That only goes for Europe, where the byd sells it's cars 100% more expensive than in China.

I am old enough to remember how the Japanese car industry went from a laughing stock in the seventies to a dominant player in the European markets. That transformation took nearly two decades and now we see that China is achieving the same thing in just a few years. The big difference between then and now is this; The collective West today has de-industrialized to such a level that it can no longer provide the basis for new large scale industries to compete with any of that. High end manufacturing can not thrive a without low end manufacturing base. I recently visited a chip machine manufacturer in my Netherlands and was told (again) that the main problem that they were facing was finding the people to produce the essential 'nuts and bolts' in the machine shop - not so much getting highly educated engineers to develop and assemble their chip baking machinery. One of the engineers said it best; 'We have trained our janitors to become robot operators - now we are in dire need of janitors'. So you outsource production where you can - which creates its own problems. Local high tech manufacturers relied mainly on cheap Russian energy, raw materials and produce (ironically this dependency includes the defense industries). That critical supply pipeline has now been sanctioned shut. Guess what is happening to those companies as we speak? Worse is to come once the conflict with China heats up and frankly I don't see how high tech in my neck of the woods is going to survive this perfect storm of neo-liberal follies. Back to cars - Germany's EV manufacturers have pretty much thrown in the towel and are instead going for minority stakes in Chinese EV companies. They are admitting defeat and cutting their losses which makes sense short term. This however is always a losing proposition in the long run.
The EU lacks population growth (china will soon have the same issue). That means there simply aren’t enough people for producing everything locally, plus European wages are way higher and workers have actual rights

Here in Brazil Tesla hasn't done much because of their luxury positioning on our market and lack of support. BYD however is allegedly the reason we no longer have tax exemptions on imported EVs. They are stirring the market and annoying the big brands.

As an Australian motor mechanic, I think that BYD will do well here if/when they have a good warranty record and support from the factory.
Most current legacy ICE vehicle companies are becoming very difficult to extract warranty claims out of, the most notable exceptions being Hyundai and Kia who are easy to deal with.
The BYD pricing is compelling, as long as the long perceived 'poor Chinese quality' becomes a thing of the past, they'll grow here.
There used to be a label called “made in Korea” for Deawoo and Hyundai. Now it’s a thing of the past.

Many OEM companies make good appliances and sell them at a cheaper price than the actual brand that contract them. Many of those big name brands are just that, a brand that contract the big OEM companies and set high or low quality standards based on what they are willing to pay.

Got a BYD Atto 3, 5 months ago. My first EV after upgrading from a Hyundai I10. Very satisfied so far. Absolutely no issues so far and it more or less drives itself on the highway with the adaptive speed control

Here in Brazil BYD is dominating! The Dolphin is everywhere, being priced cheaper than many SUVs available on the market. There are reports of people using them at Uber with almost 100.000 kilometers without problems. GWM is also growing up over here, and Volkswagen is left behind offering zero hybrid cars. Do I think BYD will take over? I think it already took!

I was a material planner for a leading electric agri mfg in 2021 and we were heavily considering their blade battery designs. Safety being the biggest pro. Would have been a good move but then you become entirely dependent and that wasn't ideal for us.

The rise of BYD reminds me of Hyundai automotive in the 1980s. A very similar story arc. On a related note, it would be interesting for you to look into Geely. Geely owns the Volvo and Lotus car brands as well as having major relationships with Daimler and Renault. Its business strategy is very different from BYD, but it shares the low-cost Chinese manufacturing base and deep history in both ICE and electric vehicles. BYD's advantage selling into North America and Europe is that is already owns brands with a rich history and positive customer image. Volvo-BYD is rolling out an all-electric lineup over the next few years. Whether it will go after the $30,000 and under market in the US is unknown.

Is anyone old enough to remember when Great Wall Motors 1st entered Australia? Their Utes were, let's say, less than great. But within 12 months they had improved quality, interior design and safety. MG have done the same. I've looked at a number of BYD cars that I've seen parked in the local shops, etc. And I have to say that I'm tempted to try one out.

Its a weird statement, but thats how a few GW friends put it, all of them are tradies. to them its the perfect throw away car for 3-4 years while they save up for a hilux, if its not for me having bought a triton last year, i would have gotten a GW now. it feels like a modern car with all the bells and whistles but doesnt break the bank.

I am from Brazil, here a see a lot of BYDs on the streets daily. But here they are very expensive, maybe due to the import taxes .... In general cars are very expensive here anyway, but EVs are even more costly. That being said, for those that can afford, BYD is the cheapest one.
In South Africa, electric vehicles come with a hefty price tag, making them unaffordable for many. Those committed to reducing vehicle emissions should closely examine BYD's competitive market pricing.
You'd think with the way our government flirts with China we'd be having loads more Chinese EV's on the road.

I work for a Company that has some products manufactured in China and as long as you have QA people in China the products are more realiable than products we have manufactured in Europe. I'd be happy to buy a BYD once they gey the software upgrade for their lane assist right

Same experience, I travel to China frequently to coordinate with local factories, the fact is the quality of the products we imported to US can't compare with what they made for their local markets. They can make top quality products these days, but we can't afford those anymore, the shipping cost, tariffs, and Americans are not willing to pay more either.

I own a BYD Tesla Model Y Standard Range and it has the greatest battery of any EV I could imagine. The charging curve is just the same and not depending on state of charge. You can plug in with 90 % and get 175 kW of charging. It’s nuts!
Being based in Germany I am very aware and like Chinese e-cars. Especially Geely and it's babies, like Polestar, Zeekr and Lotus do not get enough attention IMHO. Thanks for this episode! Great as always!

You should try to make a little more videos about financial frauds, there are a lot of good examples such as the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, oh the 1970s Lockheed bribery scandal, the Arthur Andersen bankruptcy, Nortel, Parmalat, Petrobas, the FIFA scandal.
Well, nicely written, but full of lies and misrepresentations. Berkshire-Hathaway now owns maybe 3% of the company stock, not 10%. The got rid of most of that junk paper in last 5 months... BYD cars - especially in China - are seeing a huge increase in accidents due to faulty components or software, which is the main driver of the fall in sales (in other words: BYD cars are killing their owners in China at an astonishing rate, so people do not buy them, especially since they're comparable in pricing with Tesla).
Tesla is being targeted by chinese government with severe restrictions, decreasing their sale artificially (main reason: Teslas are driving espionage tool)...
So, RIvian is in huge financial hole, Polestar has just been left to die by it's CHINESE owners and Lucid... well, Lucid is a banner for EV failure. GM, VW and PSA all announced reducing/discontinuing EV production and EU just announced investigation into illegal practices by BYD/CCP/PRC (which seem to be so intertwined to be indistinguishable), so 2024 will be the last year for most of the china's REMAINING (as 30+ manufacturers in China closed in 2023) EV industry. BYD with it's poor quality will not survive.
As for numbers: in 2023 BYD sold 1.575M cars (which is an inflated number, because they are selling their cars to dealers, who are left out-of-pocket if car goes unsold), while Tesla sold - AND DID IT DIRECTLY TO CONSUMER, SO THEIR NUMBER IS VERIFIABLY ACCURATE - 1.81 million cars...

The first BYD product I ever saw irl was a forklift, it was a few months after a watched a review of Doug DeMuro of a BYD EV, I was like wow they even make forklifts, but then I noticed buses and the whole other line up of vehicles.

Just watched your latest missiv. I've driven a Tesla model S (five years) and although i was happy with it, the build quality and the road noise in the cabin was not the best. I switched to a Nissan Ariya which is a better build but the software is not where it should be and i had a dead traction battery at 20k which was replaced under warranty(it took nissan three months to sort out out). Given the size of BYD and what I've learnt in this video i would be prepared to run one. I am convinced they would as good of not better than anything I've had or drive now.
Road noise on Teslas has been vastly improved in the last 2 years.
tariffs and trade bans are not going to stop market forces in the long run.
And they are blocking the EV market from reaching the masses. In Europe all EV are super expensive right now. They just don't build affordable EV cars here, they are all high end.
Even with tariffs, the cost difference between current US EV market and the price of BYD vehicles could still potentially be a competitive business opportunity.

You can see the struggle and risks legacy automakers have with EVs watching VW, Ford, GM, and the Koreans. There are still so many issues with EVs.
Plus EVs are so unaffordable and depreciate so fast as their batteries will become useless for the used car market buyer and new tech keeps making the older models obsolete. EVs are still not a viable option for most and won't be for many decades at the current pathetic rate. There is very little reason to believe EVs will get significantly more cheaper when so much that's been around for decades like homes and other cars keeps getting more expensive. EVs are loaded with all sorts of stupid gimmicks that will break eventually. So are ICE cars to be fair.
But Toyota definitely better be investing tons of money into R&D for EVs. Looking into it and being ready if it does get better might be worth it.

If the "long range" Seagull was available for the price of the Kia Rio (< $17k) in the US, it could find a lot of buyers as commuter cars.

Gosh I hope they come to North America. We're getting absolutely gouged on car prices here in Canada, and there just aren't that many small, cheap cars to choose from anymore. We could use more competition.
To be fair though as a guy who owns a small cheap car...they just don't sell. I'm going based off the USA data so I assume it's even smaller for Canada.
Lots of small subcompacts have incredibly small profits. The low sales just meant there was more money elsewhere. They were in a constant decline. It's hard to justify to automakers and the people who control the purse strings to fund a segment that brings in little money and has no future growth potential in the foreseeable future.
Anyway after owning Mt Honda Fit and seeing its terrible quality and poor safety for this segment, I do not ever plan on owning a small "cheap" car ever again. I appreciate the gas mileage though.

You sit in one it's a penalty box. It lacks features that your first used car had. I'm pretty skinny and not tall yet it's somewhat cramped.
They never deisgned these cars for American tastes. They were deisgned for Europe and then half heartily brought over. In terms of deisgn. Americans never really like hatchbacks. But trying to convert a hatchback to a sedan looks dorky. Like the Ford Fiesta or Chevy Sonic.
Also safety. I will most certainly die hitting a tree in my Honda Fit. I will not survive hitting another Fit or especially a Camry or F-150.
There is a market for small cars. But if they want to expand they really need to make desirable product's and stop the cost cutting. People on a budget didn't even buy small cars as going to the used car market for a bigger, nicer, prettier, better built car was more desirable.

Im Indian and BYD currently sells 2 or 3 models here in India. I wish they expand in India too cause what the Indian players such as Mahindra and Tata are doing is ,they are relaunching their combustion vehicles as EVs. Even though Mahindra announced its EV Subcompany ,but it will still be up not before 2025. And the reviews that I've seen of the BYD Atto3 ,BYD is definitelt value for money

I'd love to know about the battery charging speed and, most importantly availability of places where we could recharge. It is more important than range or esthetics in my opinion
The most important factors - residual value and running cost - will proof the sustainability of (Chinese) EVs over periods of 5 to 10 years. With Tesla dropping sales prices reduces the 2nd hand value and increases write-off for owners, making it harder to buy a new car. EVs must proof to be low on running cost and affordable. A manufacturer shake-out is inevitable.
in that sense for BYD both owning the cars and the manufacturing for the batteries that they need. They could factor that in.
As the biggest sustainability point would be to make it economically viable to swap out that battery pack.
Of the movable parts you might need to replace the wheels, breaks, tires. Like some might only need replacement every 10 years (a car lives about 20/30 years).
For a company like BYD it would also mean that they can continu making money on the cars for replacing that battery pack. other companies could also tap in to that marked if they also want to do that on the EU marked. then you get even mor competition on both the cars and the batteries for them.
I think BYD is one of those brands that will force us to stop thinking that if it’s Chinese made ain’t good.

To me DJI has been excellent for a long time. My old Mavic Pro is built like a tank and taken a beating. Other than a broken prop (from user error) it has been flawless still to this day. I've also got sim racing gear from Moza that has been awesome too.

Here's the TWO reasons why:
1) Byd is a worldwide manufacturer and supplier and therefore has access to the latest technology designed around the world. And they were suppliers because of bang for buck. Meaning that they know the cost to make things and therefore could make similar or better tech for a much more affordable price.
2) Tesla was always doomed?! So many Tesla fanboys talk about the imaginary $25K Tesla. There are more affordable electric cars in Europe and Asia. And Africa buy cars from China and India. Like, less than $20K, even less than $10K. You're not competing with that.
Tesla NEVER had a chance outside of America. At most, it was a "flex" car. A lot of countries can't afford their current line up, they oblige you to use their services and the countries which can afford their car, not only have domestic and regional alternatives, they also have a good public transit system. No one needs a long range electric. On top of that, American cars are not seen as reliable.
People who paid attention to the international car world, knew this was going to happen sooner or later.
Musk is also a very controversial figure now. You have many that would never buy a car from Tesla simply because of politics (of which Elon had every opportunity to just keep quiet about, like a good CEO would).

My country is infested with these BYDs, it started a few years ago and electric models are being added to the market. As for the oldest models, they seem to keep in shape, and the newer models, some of them really look nice. If they don't start to explode everywhere, it looks very promising for BYD.

The BYD brand is growing from strength to strength. Yes it started with ICE cars at first, but that's how it learned how to make vehicles correctly & to a high standard. So now they've finally entered the EU market they are ready to go, 5 star Euro NCAP awards to all their cars they're selling in the EU, that alone should send out the correct signals to buyers. Also, to be fair to their design, they look awesome now too! Yes I would buy one for sure. I've had EV's for the last 6 years and can say that these BYDs are on par if not ahead quality, finish and tech wise to their peers in the EU, Korea & US. This is what new to EV buyers have been waiting for, reliable, safe & cheap cars. They are going to absolutely grab the market share for sure. The next problem for them to solve is the infrastructure for charging, certainly here in Ireland. If they enter that market too, well that will close the circle won't it?

We have heard those kind of stories before. In 1980s and 90s, the Japanese automakers took over the U.S. market, the Japanese consumer electronics took over the world market.

BYD is uninterested in sharing any genealogy of its components, parts or materials to ensure that they are not using slavery or conflict produced materials. Musk is correct that global car manufacturers cannot compete against that when slave level tactics are used to acquire materials.

When it comes to pure EV sales, tesla sold around 1.8 million cars in 2023, and BYD sold around 500k pure BEV vehicles..
So tesla is almost 4x bigger than BYD when it comes to pure EV sales

In Thailand BYD position them self not as a cheap car or affordable car company. Similar to the most China car companies, GWM, Deepal, AION. Their prices are around 3-5k usd cheaper than Tesla.

Which is a real problem, boutons and switches are so much easier because you can feel what you are adjusting.. that being said it’s way cheaper and easily changeable. Tesla could be so much more, I believe more pressure and options are a good thing, but I also understand keeping manufacturing in house, which is definitely a good thing.
I would probably buy one if the crash test was high enough and parts were available, the second one being why I stayed away from Tesla.
I stay in China, and i can attest to the fact that BYD has nice cars. A friend of mine has the BYD Han. A very nice and comfortable car. If i were to stay here indefinitely, i would buy this car

If the media intentionally reports, there will be even more news about ICE vehicles catching fire. In reality, the incidence of fires in EVs is actually lower than that of ICE vehicles.

Those were all plugin hybrids with an older NMC battery that's known to be defective. BYD stopped the production of that battery pack and their new LFP batteries are some of the safest on the EV market.
Here in Ecuador they're slowly arriving to the common people. We've had BYD EV taxis and busses for more than 5 year already and they work fine. The dolphin is at 27000 USD . I hope that the seagull comes soon. Though I've heard prices will drop massively by 2025 so if you're not in a hurry probably is worth waiting.
Not a chance I would buy one, I'm coming off a model x and that was the worst experience I ever had with a car, 6 weeks on and off at tesla repair facility to start that ownership experiance and numerous times sitting in murder parking lots charging just to get home from fishing trips, when you have a boat or snowmobile trailer you have to unhook to charge and having a crazy person lose their crap on me because I dared to charge past 80% on a long weekend are just a few reasons why I am done with electric, went back to hybrid Lexus 450 hybrid and don't think about charge stations or door that jammed because you opened it to let your kid in.
Consumers will learn to avoid electric cars. Right now there is still hype. Toyota is right to avoid the market and focus on hybrids.
BYD counts their hybrids in with their EV sales. Hybrids aren't EVs.
Pure EVs, BYD still sold more than Tesla. If you count Hybrids, then BYD sold twice as many cars than Tesla.

@@walden6272 but the more expensive model Y out sold BYD's several best selling entry level models combined which costs only half or even 1/3 the price. Cheap entry level class of vehicles have way less profit margin.
Even though they do not have the best margins in the auto business I think this is by design as they see that almost all other auto manufacturers is scaling down their EV efforts, there is just one way I see this ending.

In Europe the base model 3 is 5000.- cheaper than the byd seal. with tesla's supercharger network is doesn't make any sense to buy a byd. That only goes for Europe, where the byd sells it's cars 100% more expensive than in China.

I am old enough to remember how the Japanese car industry went from a laughing stock in the seventies to a dominant player in the European markets. That transformation took nearly two decades and now we see that China is achieving the same thing in just a few years. The big difference between then and now is this; The collective West today has de-industrialized to such a level that it can no longer provide the basis for new large scale industries to compete with any of that. High end manufacturing can not thrive a without low end manufacturing base.
I recently visited a chip machine manufacturer in my Netherlands and was told (again) that the main problem that they were facing was finding the people to produce the essential 'nuts and bolts' in the machine shop - not so much getting highly educated engineers to develop and assemble their chip baking machinery. One of the engineers said it best; 'We have trained our janitors to become robot operators - now we are in dire need of janitors'. So you outsource production where you can - which creates its own problems.
Local high tech manufacturers relied mainly on cheap Russian energy, raw materials and produce (ironically this dependency includes the defense industries). That critical supply pipeline has now been sanctioned shut. Guess what is happening to those companies as we speak? Worse is to come once the conflict with China heats up and frankly I don't see how high tech in my neck of the woods is going to survive this perfect storm of neo-liberal follies.
Back to cars - Germany's EV manufacturers have pretty much thrown in the towel and are instead going for minority stakes in Chinese EV companies. They are admitting defeat and cutting their losses which makes sense short term. This however is always a losing proposition in the long run.
The EU lacks population growth (china will soon have the same issue).
That means there simply aren’t enough people for producing everything locally, plus European wages are way higher and workers have actual rights
