I been driving a semi for 10 years. Most of the time drivers can't pull off in snow. Is because they still try to start in low gear. On snow and ice, you have to use a taller gear. To much torque will only break traction.

Really it seems to be geographical. In some parts of the US people call them big rigs, some areas semis, and some areas tractor-trailers.
