Rebecca Costwolds is based on the 1997 Scripps Howard Spelling Bee winner Rebecca Sealfon, who always covered her mouth between saying each letter. I remember watching it live on ESPN.

that's the gist, right? he's just a hypocrite with no actual point other than "please leave my kids alone"
I mean yeah, but their whole thing of “well we can’t control their behavior” is somewhat wrong. A parent clearly can influence their kid and tell them what’s right or wrong, it’s up to them to tell their kid what’s okay, they just follow and imitate you.

This episode also gives me one of my favorite "forgotten" South Park jokes.

For me, it's Cartman's facial expression that gets me the most.
I was loosely “home schooled” as a child, mostly math and English. And I learned the rest reading books. I most often felt like these nervous kids when going out or when I was put into foster care at 14. I didn’t grow out of my nervousness until I was 32 and put on Lexipro. It’s been 4 years on the medication but I’ve never felt more comfortable with myself.
The Rebecca character is strongly based on an actual national spelling bee winner named Rebecca Sealfon. Randy and Jason Sklar ripped on her a few times on a couple of episodes in a little known show called Cheap Seats. Worth watching the uploads here on the site.
I said first seasons are kind of weird: I don't know if Kyle is bald or Parker and stone didn’t decide on his hair color. And now each kid has a personal color: Stan is black, Kyle is ginger, Cartman is coffee and Kenny is blonde. Altough, great video!

Oh, you missed it, when Cartman says John Travolta disease, he was talking about a movie Travolta starred in the 70s before he got very big titled "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble" about a teen whom had an immunity issue and has to stay in a Plastic tent and he falls for a girl.
Actually, when we break it down, the mayor's meltdown to Cartman *was* a logical sentence.

I believe the John Travolta comment is in relation to a very early role of his in The Boy In The Plastic Bubble in which he played a character with an immune disorder
When I was a kid, we had a big local home school group that did all kinds of stuff together like bowling, baseball, field trips... hell, we even went to Mexico once. You know... back when you could do that and not risk getting your face sewn onto a soccer ball.
I like how Wendy really enjoyed Holy Diver. It's almost as if everyone named Wendy had a thing for him.

No Spelling Bees aren't that big a thing in small towns, not High School Graduation Night, thats a different story, half the town tries to show up for those for some reason, not long after I graduated they shifted from a Friday Night to a Saturday Morning and started requiring Tickets to get in and each graduate got a certain number of tickets for family members.

Tbh homeschooling is the best thing you can do now that the public schools have became just indoctrination centers. It also removes the inhuman aspect of school where you sit at a desk for 8 hours with no movement and are told to just not do or say anything. Private school would be good but they also suffer from the same problem along with less funding. I’m definitely gonna homeschool my kid.

Spelling bees arent uniquely american but the first recognized spelling bee was in the US and its much more popular in the US than elsewhere.
They are optional and help kids at least a little learn basic spelling

Not sure if spelling bees are just american, but they must be largely english-based. Other languages....make sense. If things were spelled like they sounded, then you couldn't have a contest about it.
