"The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers" is the thirteenth episode of the sixth season of the American animated television series South Park, and the 92nd overall episode of the series. It originally aired on Comedy Central in the United States on November 13, 2002. In the episode, the boys dress up and play as characters from The Lord of the Rings film series, with several events and characters substituted into the narrative. They extend their game into a "quest" to return a copy of the film to a local video store. Meanwhile, the adults have accidentally switched the tape with a pornographic film.

My absolute favorite part of this episode is Tolkien...the first time when he watches the tape and comes back out and says "I'm out...I don't know what I saw, I don't want to know...I'm out," and when the parents are interrogating him, he casually brings up the difference between making l0ve and...whatever he just watched. 😂😂
Since you are flying thru episodes so fast you should know, Season 3 Episodes 7, 8 & 9 are collectively known as the "Meteor Shower Trilogy", they are not a true Trilogy though because the events of each episode are happening at the same time, each episode takes place on the same night in universe, but they should be watched in sequence.

There's a once-common experience a lot of people will never get to have: renting a movie but getting a porno instead because someone swapped the cases, whether through negligence or as a prank.
I mean, it didn't just happen with pornos, occasionally you'd get some weird art film or foreign movie. Not that that's all bad, that's how I first got in to Troma movies after all.

This episode is such a nostalgic capsule with vhs tapes. Video stores, and porn on video and not the inter et..there was some sure but more people were still using videos

So this episode does have a fair amount of context to it. First it was produced at roughly around the same time as the death camp of Tolerance which as you know did have a fair amount of references to The Hobbit film done by Rankin and bass. This one was made just before the release of the two towers into theaters but after Fellowship had already come out and hit DVD( both the theatrical and the extended edition which is the one that Clyde references). I will say that the enjoyment of this episode does increase if you have actually watched the Peter Jackson version of Lord of the Rings. And yes that does mean that the first Harry Potter film had already released and the second one was either just coming out or was going to be coming out shortly after this aired. They followed up in the theme of The Rankin and bass versions of Tolkien with a direct sequel more or less to the Lemmiwinks story in Death camp( I think that is in season 13 and the episode is called bass to mouth). This is essentially the same wizard outfit that Cartman uses in the Black Friday Trilogy which then is the direct preamble to stick of truth(and subsequently the forthcoming Snow Day). On top of that the Ralph bakshi version of The Lord of the Rings that was released in 1977 was the inspiration for the art style used in the opening cinematic of stick of truth. So clearly Matt and Trey are huge fans of the works of Tolkien. Butters as Gollum as well as the men of South Park knowing about BDS 9 are probably the best parts about this episode aside from the generalized parody itself. You are not alone in your having read the Lord of the Rings trilogy yet not actually seen the films as there is a good portion of people who have never seen those particular films be it whether or not they are fans of the book or not.

some of the visual gags you wouldn't get yet, not having seen the movies yet. but you picked up on the whole story right away when you saw Butters was Gollum. (e.g. the 6th grader sniffing the air while the main kids were hiding behind the tree root)

I suck at reading but I listened to all the Harry Potter audio books. It took a while to find a good narrator for all of them. I couldn't listen to Stephen Fry because he sounded like he was eating spaghetti as he was reading. I can't stand listening to smacking wet lips. Comuter voice sounded better. Half Blood Prince was my favorite book to sleep to for a while.

This parody made more sense than the actual Lord of the Rings. The parents' cars played the role of the eagles, but this time they actually had a legitimate reason for not driving the fellowship towards the video store, only away from it. They could have driven the kids to the video store, but they were wrapped up in a series of miscommunications. What was Gandalf's excuse for not summoning eagles to fly Frodo straight to Mount Doom?

@@georg788 That may be true for the audience, but how do you think Frodo felt staring death in the face so many times? He probably thought, "oh well, it's worth it to destroy this evil ring," until he found out that the eagles could have made that task so much easier and less deadly. I dunno about you, but I'd be pissed if I found out that I had just risked my life for no reason.
