Just bought a McGregor Maxtec chipper. 12 handicapper , been as low as 6. Reason; inconsistent chipping costing me strokes every time. Couldn’t give two sh*ts about the image. Just want to improve my score!

I started playing golf 2 years ago and I often miss chipping from the collar or the last rough. I found a chipper just today (Wilson ProStaff SGI lady - 49,95 € in a big sports shop - the green one as my club set) and tried it right after watching this video. Very stable, firme trajectory and safer shot. My master" is not thrilled with my choice because he taught me very well in a very technical way. Certainly some purists will have to complain, but it must be a club to not lose points between fairway and green. I promise I will only use it when needed! 😁😉

This image problem was similar to what happened with hybrids a while back. "Look at Andy with his hybrid; can't hit a long iron, eh? Tsk tsk."
Then that guy beat Tiger in the major a few years back with a bag full of hybrids at the long end, and attitudes changed after that. Hybrids in pretty much every back these days.
Remember it isn't about how, only how many. There are no pictures on a scorecard.

I think why chippers got a "bad player" or "beginner" stigma is because they are the kind of club that seems like it's a crutch for a lack of skill in an area. But if it works for someone, that alone should be enough to debunk the stigma because players otherwise equate score with skill. You don't hear many knocking players for using unique putters or irons. Yet the stigma for chippers stays. Heck, it should be noted that any chipper is still not some kind of automatic "get within 3 feet" card anyway as one still needs to not chunk/blade the chip, read the rollout, control distance and aim accurately.
Interestingly I have heard from many players that after using a chipper for a while, when going back to trying to chip with a wedge or iron, they are having significantly better results than they used to. I bet this is because the chipper ended up acting as a course legal training aid of sorts where they started utilizing the stroke they ingrained with the chipper on other clubs around the green. It may also be confidence-related as when you are seeing good results, you feel better about your game as a whole and don't get yips like before.

If a chipper is a crutch then so are hybrids and 460cc titanium drivers and fairway "woods" that are no longer made of wood.

Hi I've been playing golf for over 40yrs now and I have been using a chipper for about 30yrs and I don't just use it off the green I've used it on the tee on short par 3's and it has worked for me where I have scored birdies, so I will always have one in the bag👍🙂cheers

I own a Ben Ross chipper. I think it is a marvelous piece of equipment and I use it a lot. I don’t give a #€@ what other people think about me using the club. It is very easy to aim with the club and every now and then it even runs into the hole from outside the green. Seeing me doing that a couple of my golf mates also bought a chipper. And hey, I can chip with an iron but why not use the club that makes it easier?

Good video. At age 74, I have been playing golf for 60+ years and currently GHIN is 11.4. I use a chipper or a cut down hybrid depending on course conditions. Chipper like the one you demonstrated is same loft, cut down hybrid is 24 degrees. I am considered to be a good lag putter so using the chipper or hybrid works for me and I did not have an issue on what club to take out of the bad as I only carry 12 other clubs

Another excellent video. I put a 37* chipper in my bag last year and as a result my chipping has much improved. Previously I was using too much loft with my irons and this caused me to be inconsistent.

Yeah I'd use one. And I have just ordered one! I played off 5 in my teenage years but I'm struggling to play to 20 these days, and I lose about 5 shots a round to mishitting chips. It's horrible and I'm more than happy for the odd comment if it helps me enjoy it more. Couldn't care less what other people think! Happy golfing

If a chipper is easy for a beginner, it will be a weapon if an expert spends time training with it. I have two Cleveland RTX ZipCore wedges 50 and 56, a chipper MacGregor MACTEC X, and my putter. If I need a 60 I just open up my 56. The only bad thing about some chippers is that they have a terrible feel och sound - cheap like. Be sure to test several models before you making up your mind.

Nope. My chipping is not too bad. :) Spider Dubiel However I am going to watch your methods anyway. Oh yes, I have that Odyssey chipper you were showing and also a Adams 32 degree chipper as well. I sometimes use my # 8 Hybrid at 32 degrees as well for chipping. I think using a chipper is fine. I have no issues with anyone who uses one. They are legal clubs and available so why not? :) Good review Andy!

I've always mocked friends but what I have noticed is they always get it very close if you don't need to stop it quickly!! just put one in my bag!!!!!!!

Tee to green ok and on the green.I’m fabulous from sand but appalling at chipping.
Im defeated before i start.Thin them through.I’ve all but stopped playing as `I can be green side in two and go 6/7 three four times a round.
It’s destroyed me and has always been the same for so many years.
Had my first round of the year today same thing but enjoyed myself but need help.
Im going out to get one as I’ve been considering one for years.

Been using a chipper (Ben Sayers XF Pro) for quite a number of years and find it invaluable and confidence boosting, I've holed out from off the green on numerous occasions with it, it's also useful if you get into a tight spot where you have a very restricted backswing and it can often get you back into play when no other club would work, forget the stigma and get one you won't regret it.

I don't have a problem with Chippers, apart from them taking up a slot in my Bag that I need elsewhere. These days I mainly use my hybrid or on longer running chips my 3Wood Its a very simple strike once you have mastered the amount of run out that you get and the Ball just rides over the top of the fringe/rough. On a really short chips I either use my Putter or 8 Iron, dependant upon the depth of the grass

    • @royvirjee6542
      @royvirjee6542 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with Bandit Baker. I use my rescue and occasionally my 5 wood quite effectively. It is hard to judge the weight to apply as the ball seems to spring off the face. Obviously practice needed. I admit to being affected by the chipper stigma.

I had a chipper for a while. Initially it felt a bit easier, but I subsequently took it out of my bag. It was just too much of a luxury and wasn’t that much easier than chipping with a wedge. I didn’t get a significantly better contact, although I think it was a good bit easier to get the ball lined up with the flag stick. I wonder if they are legal in competition? I thought you weren’t allowed an aiming device on an iron nor a putter style grip?

    • @andrewainsworth497

Andrew Ainsworth Thanks for the clarification. I found this on the USGA site that backs up what your are saying: “chippers may not have a putter grip, two striking faces or appendages for aiming purposes”. I’m wondering about the aiming line that you see on most chippers. I’m not sure if that falls foul of “appendages for aiming purposes”?
