Thanks for the vlog on Chippers. I struggled quite a bit chipping until I bought the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 Black Satin Chipper. It has helped immensely.

I've been using the Ping ChipR since it was released and it's helped my game massively. I've taken it out of the bag now and started using my 9 iron and pitching wedge and just carried over the same stroke I would use with my chipper. My Ping ChipR was a great training aid, for how to chip.

After an awful bout of shanks I watched numerous TH-cam videos without any success. So I sold my vokey wedges and bought a cleveland chipper and chipper and a couple of cleveland smart sole wedges. The chipper is a god send and totally changed my confidence and enjoyment of this wonderful game.

I have the Cleveland chipper and I absolutely love it. I hit it from 100 yards and in. It may be my favorite club I have ever owned. I love the shorter shaft, upright lie angle and heavy head. Mark, you are sponsored by them. Tell them to produce an entire set of chippers from 26 degrees to 42 degrees and I will buy the whole set!!!

    PING CHIPR review
Second year golfing, made my 10 first birdies this year, I think 5 of them were with the chipr!
Used as a putter from the rough around the green, made some loooooong ones with it by trusting the spot I wanted it to land and the line was spot on after.
    Love it!

I carry a Cleveland Launcher HB 9-iron as a chipper. I played a full set of these for about 6 months as an experiment. I sold the set and then purchased a single 9-iron. I figure it saves me 2 - 5 shots per round. The loft is 39 degrees (Ping is 38 and Odyssey is 37). The sole is rounded so you get the good, forgiving turf interaction no matter how tight the lie is. I can use it more vertical / toe-down for shots out of deeper rough. Its my go-to club for 20 - 100 yard shots where I want to land on the apron and release onto the green. More, I can use it for longer carry bunker shots -- either cross bunkers short of the green or longer green-side bunker shots. While it doesn't match the rest of my irons (Mizuno JPX 921 HM), its just another golf club with some pretty special capabilities. Used price is between $50 and $100. I could probably just swap out my regular Mizuno 9-iron and be fine. It might gap a bit off, but I could likely adjust to it pretty easily. As it it, it's just one of 14, and I am happy to make room for it in my bag for all the things it does well.

I bought the square strike 45 degree and its the best club in my bag. I was so impressed, i also got the 55 degree for situations where i dont have much green to work with. Hit the ball with a steep angle of attack and have gone from the world's worst short game to deadly accurate. Square strike says its good from 40 yards but I have found for me that 25 yards is the limit. Past that, I use a 52 degree wedge. However, I still cant say enough about square strike.

I shunned the notion of a chipper for the 30-plus years I've played this game. But I bought my wife one, so I decided to buy the Ping. I do like it. It's not as flexible as using higher-lofted wedges, but it keeps things really close a lot. I really do enjoy hitting it, especially on long chips. But the dilemma is: which club do I pull? My initial urge is to drop the LW, but I have a set of single-length irons (Wishon EQ1-NX), so my SW is really long and not so great from the sand, so I tend to go with the LW there. But I hit a lot more chips than I do sand shots.
The Ping SHOULD be upright because a chipper should mimic a putting stroke. The Ping's loft is comparable to a 9-iron, so I know to use a 3:1 ratio--1 yard of carry for every 3 yards of run. That means that a 25-pace chip would require 6-pace carry. This is adjusted for the speed of the green slope, etc.
The grooves aren't important. They cannot add spin to chips--the swing speed is too low. The other use of grooves is to wick water away from the club face. But the same dynamic applies: the slow swing won't wick much moisture anyway.
The Ping is a 9-iron with a putter's lie angle. That is what makes it distinct from either a 9-iron or a putter. Oh, and the swing weight is in the E-3 range--quite heavy compared to typical irons. That is an added plus.

Have not played golf seriously for 8 years so looking at chipper to get back into the game. I used to come home from work and hit 60 balls every evening with a 7 and 9 iron. I won a stableford comp 1 year by shooting 40 points with 2 blobs .... must have chipped 3 in during the round. Now I need all the help I can get. Another great vid ... love how Coach is on the chipper trail to keep up with Crossy !!!! Lmao

I used to play the Wilson chipper and loved it. I suffered badly with the shanks so used to use the chipper for approach shots. I could reach the green from 150 yards out and it went dead straight. Unfortunately the club isn’t built for full shots and after one to many full swings the head flew down the fairway (very upsetting at the time 😂) I’ve got the Cleveland chipper now and although it performs well around the green I don’t find it as easy to hit from further away. Thankfully my shanks have gone now and I can use any club to chip with but the Cleveland stayed in the bag for now.

I have a very old chipper, unbranded, and I like it a lot. It has horizontal grooves and can even spin the ball a little. I use it 50 yards and in. But I struggle to get it any farther than that consistently.
Would you recommend upgrading to the odyssey? Would it potentially spin more than an old unbranded one considering the odyssey face? Would the odyssey insert allow it to be hotter, maybe making it easier to go longer with it, potentially?
Would a new Amazon chipper from say, Mazel, perform just as well for less money?
Unfortunately there is no opportunity to try them. So I'm trying to have some info before I spend over $100
    Thanks!

Struggling to find the Cleveland… wish there was more stock. Borrowed a friends PingR and really enjoyed it but found in the 3 rounds I had with it, I had limited opportunities to use it. My club has very small greens, tight fronts so if you’re a bit left or right, there’s a bunker in play. That said, I want one for the winter where small pitch shots or chips in a very muddy course means for me at least, an almost perfect strike with a wedge. Chipper would make winter golf a bit more fun 👍🏻

I was really interested to watch this video, as I’m planning to do my own version on my much (much!) smaller golf channel. I’ve recently bought the Ping ChipR to review, and want to provide a helpful comparison for average golfers like myself.
I’m usually a fan of Mark’s approach and honesty, but this video frustrated me.
For a video titled ‘Top 5 chippers - BEST CHIPPERS in GOLF’, what we actually get is a light touch comparison with no real justification of why these 4 chippers are the best in golf…I appreciate so much of golf is the player and not the club and so no club comparison can be totally objective…but you clearly say the Wilson is a bad club. Given your audience, reach and resources I was hoping for a far more helpful video which was promised by the thumbnail and title.
Perhaps I’m just being overly sensitive in my sleep deprived state (my newborn is 13 days old!), and if you do see this Mark, feel free reach out, or ignore it 🙂. Appreciate my audience is tiny compared to yours, but I thought you might find the feedback helpful, and I wanted to share as I’ve watched your content for years and it has been a big influence.

I like the look of the Odyssey one the best. It looks exactly like one of their putters, which, to me, would promote a very putter-like stroke. I think the putter stroke is an easy stroke for the average weekend duffer to emulate. The one thing I don't like about it is that the bottom leading edge looks a bit sharp which could result in it digging into the turf if you hit it just a tad fat.

  • @PkGam
    @PkGam ปีที่แล้ว

Great comparison video overall! Chippers come in such a wide array of styles and lofts that they kind of remind me of putters. Well... Yes they are meant to be used as a putter which is probably why they have putter-like designs. But I mean chances are there's one out there that will have a look you like.
Though one hiccup is that you never mentioned the lofts.
The Wilson Prostaff is 36 degrees according to the Amazon listing. No loft stamp on it though.
    Odyssey's X-Act should have a 37 stamped on it.
There's no stamp on the Ping ChipR either, but the site lists it as 38.5 degrees.
Finally, the Cleveland Smart Sole is a 42er according to the site, but it too has no stamp.
...Come to think of it, the loft isn't stamped on most chippers. Maybe more manufacturers should do that because people may have a preferred loft for a chipper.
    -----
A thing that seems common when people talk about chippers is that the higher lofted chippers seem to be more versatile. Square Strike, Top-Flite and Mazel make a 45er, then Mazel continues on up to a 55 and 60 so those are likely worth checking out too. But my guess is that they can be "too" high for some players as it may become intimidating like a lob wedge and could cut into the idea of using it for longer approaches.
I also noticed that some prefer no grooves because it almost ensures that it runs rather than bites which they find more predictable. So Wilson's may be the killer club for some. Though I think those players are just using it around the green like you said.

Is there any chance of producing an instruction video on how to use these chippers to their full potential (ball position, grip, stance etc)? Is it just a putter motion for every shot or can I also use a wedge swing for certain shots?

I have a Cleveland niblick kicking about somewhere and might put it back in the bag! Can't understand why these type of clubs get such a bad wrap when you have a whole plethora of game improvement versions of clubs that nobody seems to mind. Mark, I game the odyssey and it angers me because it snags badly. I tested indoors and have played in the past with a modified 7i I built, so I was very disappointed when I got it out onto the course. The issue comes with the 5m from the green shots. They need to be delicate and have a sense of touch about them, and that's when the odyssey is snagging because there isn't much force in the shot.

Think you missed a very important point. Why are you using a chipper ? Generally because you can't chip with a normal club .... So it's then.... Ok well chip like you putt analogy ..... Which leads me to my point, the Odyssey as a putter chipper may well be the better one ? So maybe why they look different.... For different reasons, to help with certain issues .... . But good you recognised their great value to normal golfers 👍

Wilson has some serious history. Creation of the sand wedge via Gene Sarazen, more majors won with Wilson irons than any other brand. 62 in fact. Ogg- mented iron design that was the forerunner to cavity backs. No surprise they work and not a crap product. Sure they have cheaper lines but Wilson shouldn't be a punch line. Top of the line chipper? No. But it's 20 bucks and from my viewpoint of your chips, it hangs with the obnoxiously priced.. Some golf snobbery going on here for sure! That being said, I probably wouldn't use it. Lol

I picked up a pinemeadow chipper for 39.99 usd to try one and I enjoy it. I love the look of the Cleveland but I couldn't justify the purchase without knowing if I would like it. Would definitely get the Cleveland if I can find on win the wild again.

Seems to me the Wilson came out the winner here. Arguably performed best in this demo and it comes at a fraction of the price of the others. If this is really about dropping the ego and playing what works, it's hard to justify spending $100-150 more based on looks.

A chipper must be one sided, have an iron grip, and be no shorter than the shortest wedge in your bag in order to be legal according to the USGA

Not sure why someone would buy a specific chipping club and not just use your P wedge or something similar that's already in the bag?

Heavier head. Upright stance so you use your putting stroke. Wide sole so it doesn't dig. No blades or fat chips.

    • @ithedon911
      @ithedon911 ปีที่แล้ว

@@dougscale5317 good explanation, but why not just get better at chipping? Because you would also need to practice with the chipping club in order to get a feel for distances. Also, it's very difficult to hit a fat shot with a pitching wedge/9 iron using a putting stroke

@ithedon911 i tried chipping using my Smartsole, p and 9, what made me decide to keep the Chipper in the bag is the fact that i can make hole outs using it from chipping distance than p or 9.
Since my p is 44 degrees, i removed it from my bag and used chipper since then,. It lowered my handicap and i usually score around 120 to 130 per round and now im only scoring around 88 to 95 in good rounds and 96to105 in bad rounds. Simply by using a chipper..
There are also holes when my ball is very close to the hole and i get gimmes.
There was even a round when i only used the putter in 2 holes out of 9. The 7 holes were all gimmes because i was able to chip it very close to the hole using chipper

@@ithedon911y friend and i decided to buy chipper because we are both busy in our respective works.
So instead of practicing chipping, we took the short route by just buying the club.
I usually use it 70 yards in. My friend can hit it a little longer, 100 yards in...

Ping chipper is the best but has no enough loft and being heavy hits very flat balls. It is the best from 30 + meters out. The next model should be with a loft of about 50 degrees. I can see that the "global warming" finally hit UK!

Cleveland and Ping are no doubt the lookers of the bunch. Clubs should look like clubs. Of course, it’s all about that personal comfort level. That Wilson looks like it got caught committing a crime. LOL. Is that even a chipper? No grooves and no shame… It’s like a date that’s actively trying to get you to hate them.
