    Being an engineer myself, I have a few comments:
    - Since the cut-out merely serves as a guidance to the axe-head, one could replace it in several ways that do not compromise the strength of the blade. A fuller that does not go through would be one example. Another one would be just shaping the axe head so that it rests on the "extended bevel" without touching the actual edge would be another option.
    - This way, one could just have a single hole in the middle of the blade where the axe head sits and a spring-loaded pin on the axe head locking it in place. With a slight 'inverse taper' where the axe head should stop, one could even make the axe head fit tightly in axe mode, so it does not rattle.

    • @acethesupervillain348
      @acethesupervillain348 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The cut-out is necessary to fit the BaneNZ locking mechanism, as you push the button from the top to clear the sword from the bottom. With this mechanism in particular, we felt like we should present a very big and beefy lock to prevent it from shaking loose from impacts.

    • @climbscience4813
      @climbscience4813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@acethesupervillain348 I think the locking mechanism as shown is consistent. I just think that one could do without the cut-out with a spring-loaded pin instead and a single hole of the cut-out. This just has other pros and cons I guess.

    • @fitzeflinger
      @fitzeflinger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i had the same idea! a springloaded pin/bolt or a turning-bolt mechanism with only one hole each at the top and the bottom of the blade for the pin to jump in. two fixating pins would be even better i think, it would reduce the stress on the slider/fuller, which otherwise could get damaged and tilted through impact to the point where it won't slide anymore. but the challenge then is how to get two pins to be pushed with a simple and fast hand motion.

    • @tiredandretired7137
      @tiredandretired7137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was thinking that myself. Use a regular blade. Use a screw like with a C clamp to hold the ax head in place. Put wood inserts on the ax head to protect the sword blade.

    • @Earthenfist
      @Earthenfist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm curious how helpful following the in-game 3-part design might be. You could probably figure out the geometry such that the axe head sliding up and down would lever on the blade tip to pull it in and back, keeping the hinges all together. It'd allow for all the locking mechanisms to be nearer the hilt as well. Of course, I totally agree with you that you'd want channels or grooves rather than a full slot.

    4:47, actually, The sword swings themselves ARE faster than the axe swings, but the actual movement isnt, I'd assume its to sort of emulate a stance where the user has to be more "grounded", so probably not an oversight

    • @jo54763
      @jo54763 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      The way I always imagined why the movement is different is because the axe mode swings are wide and the hunter has to move for a good amount of the attacks, following through with the momentum of the swing. The hunter moves faster because they use the axe head's momentum after a swing to reposition themselves.
      As for the sword, there is less inertia at a point that's further away from the body, so it's hard to create momentum that can be used to move oneself. The hunter can swing faster but can't use their swings to reposition at all, aside from by moving their legs.

However, there should probably be an extra ridge preventing the pin from slipping out over the otherwise very thin blade... um... shoulder? I'm not sure about the terminology. But anyway, with a groove and ridge you should do fine, although one more of either might be needed if the sword is double-edged.

    Fashion a hardwood scabbard that's a little thicker than usual and comes equipped with a mace head or hammer head near the opening of the scabbard.
    That way you'll be carrying the head of the scabbard weapon in your belt, not entirely unlike the way you'd normally carry some axes or hammers. But you'd also have a sword at the ready.

      fun fact: in the 1400's with the introduction of early matchlock firearms to the rest of europe from asia, there were some innovative combo weapons that incorporated both the gun and the blade. I once stumbled across a reproduction of a great mace with a flip top spike lid. undo the catch, top flips open to reveal 4 barrels, near the bottom of the mace head were 4 slide leafs that covered the flash pan holes for the guns. Early gun play and combat tactics being what they were, the wielder was intended to ram the side spikes of the mace head into a a wooden sil, uncover the barrels, touch the match wick to the flash pan in succession (rotate, ram, uncover, fire, repeat) until all shots were fired, button up the top spike cap on the mace, and then proceed to bludgeon to death whomever survived the initial volley. it wasn't practical in the slightest, but was an effective mace with the feature of being able to fire projectiles at high velocity.
      that being said, sword pommels were already mini mace heads in antiquity to begin with (in addition to being the counterbalance to the sword blade) I have a celtic leaf blade with a flat bronze pommel that looks like pac-man. it's purely ornamental, but in a fight it would double as a two pronged bludgeon on a successful downward fist strike. Itialian Master Fiore dei Liberi's
      "Fior di Battaglia" (the flower of battle) written in the late 1300's, contained examples of using the pommel of a sword as a mace by grasping the blade in a specific manner and swinging the hilt towards an opponents head. I've only seen the technique successfully reproduced once in the modern times, by a pair of re-enactors in full plate armor going at full speed....the "clang" as the pommel hit the other fighters helm was epic.

    i have another idea, you could combine the fuller as a slider with a springloaded- or turning-bolt locking-mechanism. this way you have the integrity of a blade with a fuller instead of a long gap, and only one hole at the top and one at the bottom for the bolt to snap in to hold it in place.
    you could also go with four holes, two on each end for added lock stability. but then you'd need a mechanism that pushes two bolts simultaneously...
    i guess it's generally quite a challenge to make a small, easy to make yet sturdy bolt-locking mechanism, especially with medieval tools.
    that being said, some of the 3d models you presented seemed quite difficult to make without high precision machinery as well.

    Cool that he was talking about swinging an axe to build momentum. Axes being my weapon of choice, I can absolutely vouch for that being a true and effective method of wielding an axe. I get a great deal more speed and maneuverability with all of my axes from swinging, rolling, turning etc. keeping them moving in general.

    • @Kpsla
      @Kpsla 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point: striking with the guard end is already a technique used to tear through armor like a mace. But the issue here is that while that would be effective, one of the points made in the video is that the grip of the weapon doesn't change between it's forms. It wouldn't really be a switch axe at that point, just a cool sword.

    • @acethesupervillain348

    For integrity, perhaps using a system of ballbearings against a fuller instead. Maybe like a clothespin design to put pressure on the ballbearings and a deeper divot near the top of the blade for it to clamp into place. To retract, just unclamp the clothespin and let it slide down. Of course, the clothespin that holds the ballbearings could either have holes drilled to support a wheel-like structure so that unclamping doesnt cause the ballbearings to loosen themselves, or have the north and south walls holding the bearings to be taller and wider to keep the balls from falling out while pushing them from the deeper recesses.

    dude the warpick is fucking DOPE. That model is probably the coolest fantasy design I've ever seen. Logical, practical design. Actual realistic utility. Looks cool as shit; because it's a warpick instead of a straight up axe it functions as a better cross guard in sword form (I imagine the axe head would get in the way a bit, in the other designs.)

  • @asterisk606
    @asterisk606 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of the cutout going all the way through the blade, the channel could be similar to a standard fuller and only be surface cuts deep enough to hold protruding nubs on the inside of the axe, most similar to the second design shown. The locking system would again be the hardest part to come up with.

  • @shaidrim

    Very nice concepts, in particular the single edge blade with pick hammer head. Then in my opinion, you don’t have to completely hollow the blade, just a fuller on both side deep enough to hold one sphere per side housed inside the hammer head. But yes, the locking mechanism will be the weakest more prone to fail part, even if you resort to one or two wedges to be manually inserted from the bottom when the head is up, or from above when the head is down so to block the spheres from sliding.

  • @K41-g6p
    @K41-g6p 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    for the design with the umbrella style push springs build into the back of the single edged blade, you don't really need to cut a full slot all the way through the blade, just modify the fuller so the axe can follow along. this would increase the strength of the blade itself. a different approach would be magnets. you can actually make a magnet by getting lightning to strike iron(don't remember how exactly but it should be possible with just some metal, rope and a tall tree) so you could use a magnet to lock the axe on the top of the blade, since swinging it would keep it at the top and the magnet would stop it from falling too easily, and just use one of the locks to hold the axe at the handle.
