The *simplest* solution is often the *best* one; all you have to do to *really* make a functional switch-axe is have a swords cross guard taper to a razor sharp edge so that it's functionally a pair of axe heads. *That* way, all you have to do to turn the weapon from a sword to an axe & back is to *flip* it in your hands; *another* advantage is that unlikely the *Monster Hunter* design, even when you're using it in *sword* form, the axe heads still have a functional use, since they're acting as the cross guard.
12:14 i was going to go off in the comments but you knew what you did
THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER
Can you do a saca tripas.
Fuck you this shit been harassing me for days and I misclick trying to get rid of it so I have to go into my history and TH-cam say "yeah you watched that entire thing full red bar see?" Fuck you I don't want this shit polluting my fred

Gotta appreciate a guy who doesn't let the watermelons he sliced go to waste.
They are so good for testing but I always feel so guilty throwing half of it out. Even though the animals in the yard had a party with the remains 😄
the monster hunter one is held together by hopes, dreams, and PURE BADASSERY
DAMN STRAIT
It's magic (bioenergy)
Phials??? (Nobody knows what a phial is supposed to be)
Well I know it’s powered by phials but it’s cooler to think it’s just badassery
@@DerekCooper_ Bioenergy capacitors. That's why they charge up from hitting monsters, you're sapping the monster's bioenergy.
I'm astonished by the integrity of the finished piece, I did not think the design would hold up to any real stress.
I’d love to really try what it could handle but at the same time I don’t want to wreck it for no reason 😄
@NjordArtisan its definitely "mall ninja" durable so don't hit it on anything like wood, or rocks, or bricks, or cars, or grenades.
@@NjordArtisan maybe make one out of stronger metal qaulity and reinforced joint areas also less decorating just savage metal like fast production war blades. smiths back in middle ages only made master piece / decorative or special blades if they had the time to do that or a special customer. Most weaponry was made for warfare less where made for show pieces except if they wanted to see the skill-set of a rumoured smith. stil awesome switch blade axe thing you made but i do think you made it weaker by cutting them groves in you're most important part the spine of it all. Stil you could try make ather one for real wood chopping but that probaly gone have some weight in it. Anyways would be the best test if it can chop a tree down it probaly will chop a person down. anyways stil cool build i enjoyed watching the progress. *maybe a idea* (dont know if you have a steel company in the area but ive worked at 1 for a few days they kept trowing a lot of qaulity garbage steel into the recycle bin. they would mostly cut up massive plates of steel into smaller stuf and then trow away the skeleton of plate steel so yeah worth a look around in the local area if you got any steel industry where you live / could be cheaper to look for that. only reason i left these guys is because they wanted me to do risky stuf and i barely had training.)
Just build them from industrial grade materials it will hold up.@@815TypeSirius

The reason the Switch Axe works at all in Monster Hunter, at least as the game's lore justifies it, is that it was initially developed by an ancient advanced civilization that went extinct. Also, they are made from the parts of the series' monsters, which are stronger than any metal and can thus handle far greater levels of stress.
Good on you for pulling it off at all, though.
To be fair, the ancient civilization in Monhun was only about as advanced as we are now if they even existed at all
@rathalomaniac6212 that's technically also incorrect as the Switch Axe and other technologies in Monster Hunter exist because of the world's engineers misinterpreting how recently rediscovered tech was meant to be used E.G Carbine Rifles and gas compression chairs don't exist in Monhun but Insect Glaives do.
@rathalomaniac6212 do you know how to read
Youll notice the only metals in the monster hunter universe that are stronger than monster parts all rely on ores that only exist in that universe @rathalomaniac6212
Also Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect Grave and Gunlance, arent even fully understand by forgers in universe, they know how to make the body and most components but the core components are actually scavenge from old weapons left by the ancient civilizations, that the reason most npc hunters normally use lances and orther simple weapons, because those ones are actually pretty rare
Another awesome build. You are by far one of the best mechanical smithing channels on TH-cam. Your builds may not always be the prettiest of things (this one looks really nice, the amber handle and blue steel are a nice touch) but they're all works of engineering art. Keep up the awesome work
Glad you like them! Thanks a lot! 🙌
Could not have said it better myself. :)
@@harpatar Ironically, I came here to say this. ':D
One of? What others are there?
Functional demonstration: 20:10
Out of all the mechanical builds on this channel, this is by far the best looking one. Whereas the folding sword seemed like a prototype, a mechanical engineering idea, this seems like it works really well as both a sword and an axe, so it is actually practical to use. Also, looks cool af. Great job. I'd love to see more.
Thank you!
Yeah it's actually surprisingly "real" for a silly project. Only thing I can see truly improving it is just structural stability of the axe mode blade and some redundancy in the mechanism.
"The monster hunter version is held together with hopes and dreams" 🤣
Now do a Charge Blade!!
The best weapon (Charge Blade) is literally held together by duct tape and chewing gum
@@diseasedwombat5611 Best weapons are Switch Axe and Longsword
@@JamezenNah~ best weapon is head on a stick 😂
@@metha9987so, hammer then?
I think someone did a cardboard charge blade once, but it was huge as you can imagine...
Axe mode switch into attack looks remarkably quite well! I bet if you were to make a second version improving on the design it would turn out perfect!
One issue is it looks like you have to hold the ax in place at the guard since it lacks a locking mechanism, meaning your reach and the force behind each ax swing is taking a hit. Sword mode looks great though
@@derpywoodoo could build a locking mechanism into/under the guard and use your thumb to unlock it. could be a mechanism similar to folding tables but more robust.
Maybe it would work better if you'd apply the axe part into the sword handle.
Also I would find this interesting if it was more utilitarian, like a billhook sort of deal. An axe that for self defense purposes doesn't function exclusively AS an axe.
There's Nordic billhooks that have a blade all throughout and into the hook, used in forestry. They're more like a climbing pick and really quite nice to work with, you wouldn't expect how the small bladed nudge grabs nicely to trunks and doesn't get stuck.
We need this design in Monster Hunter Wilds
AGREED
The design is very unique, it definitely should be an event weapon, maybe early game event quest.
I like that you recognize the issues with what you make. You not only do that but you joke about it as well. Great content and I respect you for the transparency.
Thanks a lot!
it do be missing the elemental discharge tho. Strap a flame thrower to it.
Thats just a bloodborne weapon at this point
Have you actually played Monster Hunter?
@@jack00654 jack lets make out hot steamy sauna style
@@jack00654 Have you? Switch axe uses phials to produce elemental (Or Status) damage when charged. Its literally one of the main things of the weapon. Zero Sum Discharge is SA's signature move, and it does, guess what? Elemental phial damage.
Yeah I know, that was my main weapon the first time I played the game
You are a man who set up impossible desings and then you are really able to make them, anything else doesn’t matter. But this is not your only quality by far. Beautiful piece. And good entertaining video which is also very useful for begginers in smithing. Keep it up, I believe in you growing big here and I am glad that sponsors see it same way.

I'm blown away by your skill, the final result looks really good and is fully functional as well! I really do wonder if, in the future, you could try your hand at something like the hunter's axe from bloodborne? A large hand hatchet with a spear point that, through an extendable handle, turns it into a halberd?
Thanks! I’ll put the hunters axe on the whiteboard, that sounds awesome!
I like how you sat there hitting a piece of wood for a hour to test the strength
Man, i just started to watch, but your idea is insane. And i like it! Keep doing stuff like that, bro!
Thanks! I hope you’ll like the video 🙌
@@NjordArtisanMaaan, the final result is AMAZING. Let me shake your hand, pal, woah.
@@Xsyara thanks!! Glad you enjoyed it 🙌
Great work! Honestly the only thing I can think of to improve it (beyond just, like, aesthetic things and maybe making it to where the axe part could hit the hinge dead-on and still cut) is maybe making some sort of latching mechanism so you can do the thing where you slide your hand down the haft while you swing the axe to get the impact of swinging from holding it at the base of the haft without the long wind-up of doing so without it stopping being an axe
I love how you go out of your way to try new things, good work ❤
Thank you!!! 🙌
If I had one of these, I think i'd just spend all day swapping it between sword and axe. It looks satisfying as all hell, as a proper swaxe should be.
This is so insanely cool, and looks beautiful! The bluing, the amber, the freaking fluting??? I'm in love. If you were to make a second version, do you think some kind of catch so it stays in axe mode without you holding it would be viable? That way you could really take advantage of the different leverage from the weight shift.
I love the bucket of elbow grease used for a transition.
I went deep comment diving trying to find someone else who appreciated that masterpiece
I would love to see a collab between you and Alec Steele or maybe will stelter would be a better option these days. It would definitely be a huge boost for your channel and you absolutely deserve a boost. Your ideas are crazy cool. I would really like to see you go back to doing some normal knives and such though every now and then. But bro that axe is the sickest thing I think I've seen in a long long time on TH-cam! Epic af
Maybe one day 😄
I’ll definitely do some „clean“ knife builds in the future but probably on my second channel. Past videos showed me that they don’t do well on this channel 😄
And thanks a lot for the kind words! 🙌
Imagine if blacksmiths in the times of old made weapons like these. Opponents would have to learn on the fly how to deal with someone wielding one of these if they're switching stances. A skilled user of one of these in medieval times would have been amazing to see.
Sven the mad knife scientist lol. I like the bit bit where you have the voice of Lee Emery say w.t.f is that lol. Always fun to watch you go forth and build mate stay safe 😁
Thank you Rodney! 😄

Vielen vielen Dank! Eine kleine CNC Fräse wäre wirklich ein Traum 🤩
0:05 maby i should build a WHAT
I can practically feel pain looking at the bend in that slide during quenching. Glad to see you managed to salvage that part!
I like it but it somehow needs a handle where you slide it up along if you could do that that would be crazy maybe like the hilt looking part that you use as the mechanism to switch it into axe form has a built-in kind of hollowed out hilt/handle hollowed out too fit around the tang .. and then you make a little dimples on the inside of the handle and make guide valleys so it has a guide rail so the handle doesn't wiggle while in motion.
You just keep getting better and better my man! I still think that it’s great that you have and use the OG anvil that you started out with
Thanks! Yeah that anvil turned out to be quite useful. The big ones edges are all rounded over so it’s nice to have some sharp ones when I need them 😄
@@NjordArtisan I just think it’s invaluable to remember how you started out, where you came from, to be proud of where you are in the present and never stop what you’re reaching towards! Thank you!
So nice man, love to see both the aesthetic and mechanical improvements to the projects!
Glad you like it!
I am amazed. Way more practical than the past sword and whip attempts. Kudos!
i'm personally more accustomed to elder futhark, but if i'm not mistaken, the runes on the blade read "filing challenge"
It says viking challenge in what’s apparently anglo saxon futhark but honestly I’m no linguist or historian so no idea if it’s right 😄
It's like if a speed square made of metal roofing was made into a sword axe. Amazing but also complicated construction, still awesome.
You pulled it together in the end 👏🏻 👏🏻. I like the final piece. I think you'd have an easier time in the future, by grinding the edge when the pieces are combined, and also to steer away from designs that hinge in the center of the blade, perhaps you could look up folding mechanisms that aren't normally used in weapons. You're for sure getting better!
Fluting is a GREAT tech! if you fluted your side-plates or used the similar dimpling techs (hexagons are the bestagons, of/c), you could stiffen those as well, or subtly dish them outward to add stiffness and strength to otherwise very thin and light pieces.
Also, consider whipping up a batch of "silly putty", or getting some Oil Clay, you can embed your workpiece into a bed of the stuff, then go at it with your preferred tool to shape it easier. this is how fancy embossing is done by hand, but you can use it to ease (and expedite) embossing a flat sheet with flutes of any shape, or dimples, or just a "hammered finish" that can all add stiffness!
I'll try that in the future!
Just absolutely insane lol. I love this build and the fact that you don't even own a box to think in, much less have one to think outside of...
Thank you Erick!!
need to see you try the morphing attacks with it 😂 especially the one where you spin it around your back during morph

That’s so badass. Shame it can’t discharge like in the game the concept is from but this is one of the most incredible builds for something I’ve seen. And the journey it took to get there in this video shows how you care for your craft. Much love, man
Thank you so much!
@@NjordArtisan Bro, it's a well earned compliment. You rock.
It looks beautiful and probably is my favorite interpretation of the swaxe concept. I'm surprised you didn't put any sort of locking mechanism in it so you don't *have* to choke up on it in axe mode though.
Thanks! I’ll try that for a future version 🙌
That is some beautiful norse craftsmanship
Dope build as always. Love the engineering you decide to do for your builds.
Thanks man! I have yet to check your video out but I'm looking forward to it!
Incredible axe/sword, and your craftsmanship in impeccable.... Congratulations in an amazing project
This is an incredible piece! You should be very proud. Looks amazing and it switches so cleanly between axe and sword!
There's a reason that axe-handles use Wood, and it's not because steel costs more. Your blades' spines might do better with something like Yew, as it'l hold the shape without bending as badly, and still be springy enough to withstand use without breaking.
Yes axe handles are made of wood because it has a better size to weight ration. And since an axe handle has a large cross section it's strong enough. For this build, size is a very important factor and since steel has the better size to strength ration, I went with steel. I don't think a 3mm piece of wood would be able to hold 3 lbs with 2 ft of leverage, whereas the metal can.
i see you've improved
this time you managed to make one that actually looks good and even works
Thanks!
Charge Blade when? (awesome job with the Switch Axe!)
It's on the list 😄
I was contemplating doing that at first but I thought a viking roundshield doesn't look good as an axe.
A longsword and heater shield however 👀
@@NjordArtisanThere's something cooking up in your brain, and I can already say I'm interested in seeing how it will turn out.
I feel like the switch axe in the games, uses kinetic force, in addition to a switching mechanism, as in tri especially the hunter adjust something underneath the switch axe, to switch between sword and axe mode, like he is forcibly pushing the blade forward or back, using some kind of magnetic release mechanism. They improves the design a bit with the charge blade, and i think frontier has some even wilder weapons, but the switch axe was definitely a gimmick weapon, which i didn't feel like translated well into real life, without being extremely overengineered. I was a switch axe main in tri, before switching to greatsword later on, so i saw the animations a lot!
I’m at 2:41 so barely into the designing/construction phase (let alone testing), but I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of latch you’d use. If you relied on just friction to keep the blade in sword mode mid-swing, then swinging it fast enough to, yknow, chop someone up is liable to unfold the axehead and throw off your aim (or worse, break), but making it able to stick enough so that you _have_ to manually engage it means you have another point of failure in whatever mechanism holds it in place
Definitely still a really cool idea and I wish I had one to fuck around with, might see if I can’t make one out of wood or something
Not gonna lie this one looks way better than the Dishonored folding sword 😅 less complicated indeed but still it works!
You are officially the trick weapons guy now! Awesome build as usual I wonder which weapon combo you’ll make next? (Warhammer/mace + sword?)
I haven't decided yet 😁
This came out gorgeous and a lot more functional and robust than I would have expected from the design!
If I could suggest anything for a hypothetical v2 build, I would try to find a way to put a beard on the axe blade or to otherwise give it more of a traditional axe shape. While we don't really have any way to figure out for sure if Viking era Norse fighters used them that way, the "hook" an axe beard forms is very useful in melee combat. You can grab a shield with it and yank it aside, you can grab someone by their shoulder, things like that. Also, it lets you get your hand right behind the cutting edge.
I started off with a design that looked like a bearded axe (and I also prefered that, because bearded axes are awesome) but I really wanted the sword to look like a big seax which is why I went with this design instead
Now that you've come this far, you know what must be done.
_Zero Sum Discharge_

The fact that this can be swung at all is very impressive.
Awesome job on this project. The kinematics vs. stress/strength issues are pretty complex for the build ... you coped with them well ! Thanks for the share.
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Next will be a fonctional Charge blade
Pretty awesome idea I think it’s been execute quite well. Seems pretty functional. However, from what I know of for welding and creating blades mainly from watching forged in fire and some amount of college experience I would suggest that if you were to do something like this again instead of welding parts together after you’ve treated the metal weld everything till you’re happy with it then do the heat treatment, just starting with an aneling to soften the metal where it may have become work or casehardened then use forge clay to protect the spine of the blades during the hardening process. The clay will harden on the spine of the blade preventing the spine from heating up to drastically and then when you quench the bleed the clay will prevent the spine from being quenched, this should result in a blade that’s sharp and functional.
This looks insanely cool and I imagine myself using this in a videogame 😍 great work!
Next elden ring dlc 👀
If it doesn't have a locking mechanism, you could build one into / under the guard that can be unlocked with your thumb. It could be something similar to the legs on a square folding table as a simple one. It could also be modified utilizing other locking techniques, like the ones used in some knives, to make it more advanced and possibly more stable.
Excellent work BTW!
Absolutely wild! This looks like something right out of cyberpunk 2077, it truly is art!

the pointy sword tip becomes a neat pick on the back of the axehead. Honestly that side seems more deadly. Ah, I see you noticed by the time the melon was in front of you.
You can probably take down a Great Jaggi with it.
I love how you performed the watermelon jutsu in the showcase.
That is the coolest switch axe I've ever seen!
Wait, actually, It's the coolest weapon I've ever seen!
yesss this is much better than the previous folding swords, looks like this design is really coming into its own. Im ready for the billet titanium version next
This is amazing, it would be useful if it locked in the configuration though, that way you could pull your hand back down the handle and generate more power
Big monster hunter fan and you made it work! I’d like to see more 🤘
While this is 11,000% a masterpiece of engineering and smithing, you missed a crucial detail of the Switch Axe: The tip of the sword has five tiny holes in it - well I say holes, they're more like little cupholders really - that do a lot of strange magic things like collecting the blood of the enemy and whatnot, but they're also the locking mechanism in both modes. Need to switch from axe to sword? Have to disengage that lock first.
In the games, since the blade is so large, the hunters keep small glass containers called "phials" in the holes. These phials contain reactive chemicals, monster blood, and all sorts of other things. When switching from axe to sword, a striker on the inside of the axe blade takes off the stoppers on the phials and ignites the liquid inside, giving the sword mode a fiery boost. You can also load all phials into a single chamber on the axe blade and discharge them at the same time, causing a massive explosion.
Obviously you can't do any of that in real life for just so many reasons, but it'd have been cool to see it referenced.
The design of this made me want to add a character wielding a weapon like this to my DnD campaign, thank you for the inspiration.
Now if you make a version that can split wood. Youd win over the whole industry 🎊
Something that isn't really visible in monster hunter but that does explain how the mechanic could make sense where it shouldn't is that they are outfited with some kind of engine that both kickstarts the transformation and delivers the explosives.
The end result was amazing, my only gripe is that the wood handle is a bit thin compared to the center bit with the epoxy, how comfortable is the handle when you're not wearing gloves?
Also, do you think it's be possible to make the Rakuyo from Bloodborne? The hardest part would just be making a locking mechanism to hold the two blades together.
I did the center that big on purpose , so you would be able to have a bigger handle in axe mode and also have clearance for your hand while switching back into sword mode.
I'll put the Rakuyo on the whiteboard 👍
this looks so damn cool, huge step up from the last update on corvo's sword. I'm excited to see how far you go with these dynamic bladed designs
Really love your videos, I feel like I really learn something new every time.
Glad to hear that. Thank you!!
I'm not gonna lie just smacking the core piece against your anvil like that was the best test you could have done
Dayumn this could not be cooler! Genius.
Thank you!!
i would like to add just a little detail... If to the handle that makes it convert in to an axe, you welded a few (2 probably, one on each side of the handle) tinny metal straps, you would be making it stay on blade mode when stabbing, right now, it seems like if you tried to stab something with the blade it could turn itself into axe mode.
Yeah, some sort of locking mechanism might be a good idea. Although I really like the fact, that it’s so easy to switch between both modes without one
I don't actually think that would be much of a problem - it might matter plenty if you were trying to stab through something armour like, but fleshy bits... And as this style of blade profile will struggle with armour anyway - that would be a good time to go axe mode deliberately.
Would need hands on to really tell for sure but I highly doubt its so smoothly transitioning that stabbing something will just put all the energy into that mode swap and not also be very uncomfortable for the softer targets... Plus if you stab very straight the tip and the pivots remain basically inline - so it isn't going to want to crumple, and if your hand actually slides forward to shift mode part way through a stab I hate to think what it would do to the target, but that level of force and commitment isn't going to be fun...
The real question will be if this thing can actually hold up to use enough for it matter anyway. It is a really fun idea, but I don't think I'd build it this way myself, and to some extent the whole concept is flawed...
Your result honesty looks way cooler than the MH one, it's clean and the transformation is satisfying.
monster hunter... ❤
The Top Connector needs to have a guide quarter as well as a pivot hole. The Guide Quarter increases the metal strain resistance. Also, you could have added another axe part and an extra bar that setup the control for a more axe like shape.

trick for brass pins in hard to reach places: with you pin cut to the precise length desired, use a little glue (any) to put a steel ball bearing on each of the tips, then grip onto these nice and hard with some pliers to deform the pin, thus locking it in place.
The bearings should then pop right off, leaving a clean finish!
Alternatively, just use some weld to put opposing beads toward the end of a pair of pliers, permanently making them into pin-crimps!
That's a great tip, thanks!
You finally made a switch weapon that is lethal to watermelons!
I'm just chirping you this is really cool
I was not impressed at first but when it all came together ----WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This looks awesome, but I also think it would be cool in a significantly smaller version. Think like large hunting knife that slides to be a hand axe. Less a weapon and more a tool. That just seems so cool to me though I'm sure the smaller size would lead to difficulty with material stress as things get thinner. Maybe it could just be a thick chonker despite being short lol.
