    You're channel is so awesome! I recently got a 6.5G Ar15 which is how I came across your channel. Ive always wanted to reload but I felt like there was so much I didn't know. Your channel has answered every question or hesitation I had and I am now reloading very successfully! Really appreciate all your videos, very well done. Hope to see more 6.5 Grendel!

    Johnny 's Reloading I would double check that it is perfectly lined up with the hole in the barrel. I had very similar problem with one of my rifles, I used compressed air to help me alignment mine perfectly. After that no more problems.
    Love the 6.5 grendel

    Buzz: Dude please keep up the great work... I went to the range after 4 months of getting ready. Me & my cheap’O $100 classic firearm barrel. To my surprise with Hornady SSt’s it shot 1.2 moa avg. and with 123smk-Arcomp( 27.0gr) shot 1.0 moa!!!! I’m loving it. Thanks for all of your hard work. Well we don’t call something you love to do - hard works! Can’t wait to go back & shoot a different load setup

    Yeeeesssss!!! More Grendel! Very excited to see your results with the Noslers. I finally got a good load with them using Hodgdon Leverevolution. Around 2500 fps out of an 18" barrel (AR Performance with the 750XD bolt rated for 60,000 psi) and they just stack into a nice 0.6-0.7" group every time. Another bullet I'm really excited about is the new Hornady 123gr ELD. Would love to see some testing with that one if you have the time. Hope you have better luck during Muzzleload in the woods, I feel your pain with not seeing anything.

    I had the same failure to feed problem with mine with ASC magazines. However, it was doing it every 3-5 rounds. I switched to the E-landers and haven't had a problem in 100+ rounds.

      I went back to my E-lander for a video I shot today and didn't have any issues at all. I wish magpul or somebody would make 6.5 Grendel mags so we could stop dealing with all these garbage mags out there!

    I finally started switching my suppressed ARs to adjustable gas blocks ... keeps it cleaner and you can go back to a lighter buffer spring combo.

    It's an Optimum Charge Weight (OCW) thing. It's kind of normal for the POI to shift around as the vibrations of the barrel changes. I would look for the smallest shift in POI between strings. 28.0 or 28.1 with TAC would be very attractive to me with what you have there. Both the 27.9 and 28.2 groups are nice and tight and the POI shift between them is very small. So I'd go with something right in between. I have a grendel which I absolutely love and I have been through this exercise with it.

    I live about 30 minutes from Picatinny Arsenal and the recent R&D rumor is the Army is testing the 6.5 Grendel or a variation there of to replace 5.56, granted not everything the military uses is ideal but intriguing. Been watching your vids for a while now, along with a handful of others. Really enjoying the scientific method you apply. Keep it up!!

    Your Hornady comparator tool shows the same fired reading as mine. I bump .005" as well.
    Benchmark is fast for 123gr in 6.5 Grendel. I recommend only loading up to 100gr with it.
    CFE, LVR, AR Comp, and 8208 XBR are very popular with 120-123gr. 8208XBR is a bit fast, so as long as you don't exceed 28.3-28.5gr, depending on your throat. Book from Hodgdon's with 123gr SMK and 8208 is 28.5gr Compressed.
    I personally like CFE223 with 6.5 Grendel, as it is very forgiving and you get a full case, with high velocities, and lower pressures. We tested it with several different bullets in a dedicated pressure-trace rifle with the sensor over the chamber in the correct location, and my pet load of 31.2gr of CFE under a 123gr AMAX only generates 46,235psi at 2.260" COL.
    I'm halfway through the video right now.

  • @LRRPFco52
    @LRRPFco52 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With 129gr ABLR, the powders to beat right now are CFE223 and LVR. One thing about the Noslers is that they like to copper foul a lot, but I haven't seen any of that since I shoot them with CFE223, and get over 2400fps from an 18" Lilja barrel, which is more than plenty of speed with that .553 BC. They also expand down to 1300fps, and have proven to be excellent wild boar killing bullets. Expansion is immediate and full, with full penetration and internal devastation.

    Nice video! So far the only powders I have tried for the Grendel is IMR 8208 XBR, WIN748 & CFE223. The 8208 is my go to powder. Still working on loads with 748 but it shows some promise. Do have some TAC that I need to try. And it's nice to see someone else using the Lee Dippers to get your charge started.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench

    I personally do have same scenario with my reloads. lower charge POI seem to goes to the lower LEFT, and higher the charge, POI seem to go higher and toward to right. I m no expert, but guess that, it more to do with rifling twist rate and velocity different with the bullets.
    Hopping there is people with more experience that can explain this!!
    Thanks for your video.

    Watched a Vid on 6.5 G with H322 and shot your load data. It was great! Out of H322 in these component shortage times, but have a pound of TAC. I'm hoping to get your results with 27.6-27.9 with 123 Lapuas. Will also be checking your Vid on the 107 Sierra MK's. You're an Encyclopedia of Load Data.

    FTF with suppressors is normally high cyclic rate, which needs to be slowed down with buffer weight, adjustable gas, or both.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I am most likely going to go with an adjustable block. Having said that...after I finished filming I shot 40 more rounds out of my 20 round magazines and didn't have any issues. I may have a bad magazine on my hands. More testing to come.

      I have had a suspicion for many years that the AR-Stoner mags are rejected lots by the pallet, with AR-Stoner floor plates. The straight 15 to 17rd mags that CProducts and ASC made were rejected by AA, since AA asked for a curved 15rd mag. They will work with 7-10rds in most guns, but not beyond that. Those mags should have been turned into scrap metal, but instead were most likely dumped onto the market since demand for mags was so high.

    Gunna regurgitate sum information here. Looks like a scatter node or “anti node” at 27.5 grains of Benchmark. That could be a good thing. Typically at about 1.5% above or below the scatter node, you could try 27.2 and adjust seating depth to tighten it up I do believe

    I'm pretty sure the type 1 bolts is where the Grendel got a bad reputation of shearing off locking lugs that I still see people commenting on videos about. I have an 18" PSA upper that was complete from factory that I'm in the ballpark of 6k rounds on it and the locking lugs have no indications of letting go any time soon.

    In most cases a silencer will register an impact shift and every time you put one on unless it's timed correctly it will register different impact shifts. A good reason to time your silencer.
    Nice vid and great shooting. I'm just getting into the 6.5 G and have high hopes. Does it work best in longer barrels or will a 12.5 work, I'm sure I'll loose velocity. I'm looking to build a 3 cal takedown backpack gun in 5.56, 300 Blk and 6.5 G.
    Thnx and Regards,

      I feel like it's gaining popularity. It's an awesome round for the AR...word will get out eventually. Barrels are still pretty expensive. If cheap $100 barrels were available like they are for 300 Blackout you'd see the popularity skyrocket, I bet.

    • @garrytalley8009
      @garrytalley8009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are cheap barrels out there to buy. If you do some online searches you will find barrels for a little over $100 and less tan $200, you can buy the bolts for $100 or less. I just ordered a complete upper for about $350 because I didn't want to take apart a working upper to change it out and get left with parts. I am considering selling one of my uppers that is just picking up dust instead of being left with loose parts that I won't use or have a problem selling. I was considering changing an upper out until I weighed my options.

    I'm running through some Hornady brass and 5 outta 50 needed trimmed. I also heard you talking about bumping the shoulder back and with my Lee full length die I can feel when the shoulder touches the die. I've not got a gauge to measure to the shoulder so I just bump it on back. Is there a big dif when you don't move it back? Also anealing? I've seen a few guys that do it and alot that don't. I understand what it does for the metal on the molecular side but is it really that important?

    Just a quick ask/tip - would you mind listing the gear you’re using. Press model, dies, powders, projectiles, Grendel rifle specs, etc. it would make it easier for fellow reloaders to reference, rather than having to search through the actual video for the data. Thx from Surprise Arizona!

    Johnny you do great videos but I think life would be better if you got an RCBS Chargemaster Lite for weighing charges. Mine works super with only an occasional over charge which I just put back in the hopper and do over. It would save a lot of time and it's so easy to just work up loads. You can recheck with another scale easy enough, but I have not had any problems and every time I have checked it has been right on. They can be had for a couple hundred dollars at Natchez Shooters Supply online. The competitors have issues. The RCBS has a nice slow trickle and seldom over charges.

    Sweet video I would suggest a brass catcher so u don't lose that expensive brass. How much did u spend on ur upper? I been looking into either a 300 blackout or 6.5 what would u suggest as a new build?

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man, that is a very tough question. If you need/want heavy subsonics, of course 300 blackout is the better choice. Other than that, I would say that 6.5 Grendel is far superior in just about every way. It's a better hunting cartridge and has a much longer maximum effective range.
      The price difference is dramatic, though. The cheapest 6.5 Grendel barrels are still quite expensive, while you can find 300 Blackout barrels for $100. 6.5 Grendel brass is pretty expensive, while you can convert 223 brass for the 300BLK. Bullet choice is another thing that favors the 300BLK. You can find all sorts of cheap 30 cal bullets for plinking. You will also need dedicated magazines for the 6.5 Grendel and there aren't any cheap options out there. Lots of little things that add up quickly.
      I spent a lot on this upper. Gibbz side charging receiver ($250), Brownells barrel and bolt ($300), Midwest Industries 15" rail ($200), Silencerco muzzle brake ($75), AIM NiB BCG ($75), gas block & tube ($30), AADMount scope base ($280), Vortex Viper PS-T FFP 6-24x50 ($950). Good god that is depressing to write it all out. Over two grand.
      Of course, a lot can be trimmed down from this. Swap the side charger for a standard $75 receiver, buy a cheaper muzzle device if you don't need suppressor compatibility, and buy a more reasonably priced optic and base.
      On the other hand, my 16" 300 Blackout upper was built reasonably cheap and shoots awesome. BCM blemished upper ($75), AR-Stoner Barrel ($90), Generic semi-auto bcg ($75), gas block and tube ($30), BCM KMR 15" rail ($200), Silencerco flash hider ($75), and then I just use one of my quick disconnect scopes that is in a Burris PEPR mount, or put a red dot on it, or sometimes I run Magpul MBUS irons. Whatever I feel like at the moment.
      It all comes down to your requirements! I absolutely love 300 Blackout for its versatility. I love 6.5 Grendel for its capability.

    • @garrytalley8009
      @garrytalley8009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jefferson State Reloader they are apples to oranges. 300 AAC Black Out wins short range or suppressed. 6.5 Grendel wins for long range especially in long shots hunting or target. I have two .300 AAC Blackouts one short barreled rifle and one carbine. I am purchasing a 6.5 Grendel upper on order at Midsouth Shooters Supply with a 24" SS fluted barrel for only $350. I found it a more reasonable option to buy one at that low price already built than spend more money building one myself or converting an upper I already have and being left with unused parts laying around. A choice is simple as short range or long range, what do you prefer. If you have brass and dies they are both affordable to shoot if you reload.

      These are the first failures I've had since I fixed the extractor shortly after building the gun. I still think it was the magazine but I'll be doing more testing soon.

      Johnny's Reloading Bench Just wondering if it is an over pressure issue withe the suppressor causing the bolt to cycle improperly.
      Magazine could very well be the issue. My POF .308 does not like the Magpool mags loaded to capacity. Pull out two rounds and no problems.
      Good luck.

    what yardage are you shooting at? and what type of rear rest are you using and the stock on you 6. 5 grendel.

    I have the 6.5 Grendel Brownells 24” barrel and have been handloading for it but cannot find a powder combo with the 140 berger to give me anything sub 1” does the brownells barrel not like heavier bullets?

    Why dont you try different seating depth does it not make a real noticable difference or do you just not like to change it up

  • @LRRPFco52

    If you want speed, you really want LVR and CFE. You can get to 2700fps from a 24" in some guns, but 2600fps is easily achieved with those powders. Same with AA2520.
    I also noticed your trigger technique is biased downwards, as in the pull direction, and you can see this on the video. If you set your trigger finger up to pull straight to the rear, your groups will tighten.
    Using fine-tuned technique like that, I have rapid-fired many different loads from lightweight to heavy 6.5 Grendel's into the .2s and .3s, 5rd groups or more. The lighter guns are more difficult to manage though.
    Did you bed your barrel into the upper by any chance?

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Upper wasn't modified. Barrel was just installed in the normal manner.

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer to bed all my barrels, and select uppers that have a tighter tunnel. If the tunnel is loose, I will either get another upper, or build up Cerakote in the extension tunnel until the fit is tight. I square the face first of course. Once that's all done, I bed the barrel extension into the tunnel with Blue Loc-tite #242, and use at least 65ft-lbs of torque on the upper.
      I also bed the gas block with Red Loctite 272.
      With the Liberty barrel (button-rifled barrels associated with Satern, but not cut-rifled Satern), find where your lands are and consider adjusting seating depth, with full-stroke cycling into battery testing to ensure you don't jam the lands.
      For not being bedded, your upper is shooting great. With these few accuracy-enhancing techniques, and fine-tuning your trigger pull and rear bag set-up, you can shrink your groups noticeably. Great video BTW, thanks for the work you're doing.

    How well do you keep an eye on that level? If your ar is off a little bit left or right it can do exactly what your showing. What mount is that? Nice groups with the TAC. Have you tried the Elander mags yet? So far they are working great for me.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mount is an AADMount from Aadland. I don't watch the level as closely as I should. I should get into that habit. I haven't ordered an elander mag yet...I'll have to give those a shot.

    OAL is in YOUR control, with 2.263, 2.260, 2.655, 2.259. If your target OAL was 2.260 than every round should have been 2.260. knowing that the bullets have different OAL, your going to have to back out your seating die than bring it back down so every completed round is 2.260. With such a large difference in OAL of your rounds that will add to the reason your groups had such a large point of impact shifts!
    And you will also see the effect of different OAL in the ES on your Chrony. My question is why do you shoot suppressed ? 27.9 Grs of TAC was your best group

      I believe they are 3/8". Long lag bolts in the front and through bolted with fender washers in the back. It's sturdy!

    I hate to be this guy but it looks like your not following through with alot of your trigger pulls. That can really hurt groups. It also looks like your not pulling straight back. Love the videos man, just trying to offer constructive criticism.Also, I have have talked to a few guys who have found good accuracy around 27.5 grains of TAC as you have in this video. My rifle shoots 1/2 minute groups with 27.5 grains of TAC and a 123 AMAX.

    I haven't read other comments but your point if impact shift is probaly due to the suppressor cover slowly coming off. I have had that happen to me once the cover moves past the tip of suppressor thing move around a bit. Keep up the videos .
