    1. Make sure that you're calm and regulated. Step away if you need to.
    2. Get low slow and quiet as you try to make a connection with your child. (Give them space if they need it and offer them a pillow to hit if they're getting physical),
    3. Empathize with your child and help them feel understood by talking about what you've seen and heard of them.
    4. Try to get close to your child and offer them a hug
    5. Once your child has calmed down (and not before) you can begin to tell them the story of what happened.
    6. If you need to talk about consequences of the tantrum, you can do this now that they've calmed down.

      @@bluuprojectbaby9389 I'm black. African specifically. I've been witness to parents slapping their toddlers whenever they get tantrums. My parents decided to get a child in their late 40s and believe me when I say, I am not supportive for how they deal with my brother when he gets tantrums. They don't slap him, but they raise their voices at him. I'm watching this so that I can learn to deal with his tantrums too.

      @AddlesH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@cassiengoddard4510 I don’t have a super sophisticated process and it can depend on the day but yeah… I pretty much think about how I feel when I’m crying about something important to me so I can relate to her and tap into some compassion first. Then I try to breathe with her, tap my chest and say we’re gonna breathe and count to 10. If she can’t focus and breathe (she usually doesnt) I ask her to please tell me or show me what she wants because I can’t understand her when she’s crying. If all of that doesn’t work, I just sit there and wait until she’s done, and tell her I’m here for her. Sometimes she’ll hug me after. Sometimes she’ll tell me to go away. It’s a lot.

    Well now I dont feel so alone and over stressed . This is a very challenging phase in toddlers and parenting ,it takes a toll on us as parents. What works on one child does not necessarily also work for another, I think as parents we need to keep an open mind and try new strategies. Try try try.

    I wait the tantrum out. Not always. I have my moments where I get frazzled and overwhelmed, and start to yell. But most of the time I try to just let her cry, then when the moment feels right I talk to her and try to comfort her. Then I still hold whatever boundary I’ve placed that she got mad about. And we try to find a distraction. That’s the best I can do. It’s hard for me to step away because she will literally chase me down and scream at me. 😮‍💨

    I’m doing my best not to spank my son. Sometimes I think it’s the best solution since I was spanked and was raised like that, but I don’t wanna do that to my son. I realized my son was having a tantrum because he had a incoming rash on his stomach and on his butt. I felt terrible for yelling at him. It’s something I’m learning as a new father and trying to give him every attention and love he needs

      All you need to do is do your best and not physicly abuse your son. We all learn and this videos first part is really important: They arent doing it bc they want to be mean they do it bc their brains cant do anything else. Its difficult, i know. When my daughter screams and lays on the floor it makes me want to turn to the methods that my parents used.. But i know better! It has gotten better! Slowly shes starting to reconise her own emotions and shat causes them and has started to calm herself down before the big tantrum. We will get through this!

    I have a 2 year old and he often gets overwhelmed when its time to transition from playing with his toys to something that I want him to do.
    Doing anything outside when he gets upset calms him down like a charm.
    If that fails, drinking milk or water or even a snack calms him before the big tantrum.

    Thanks for sharing and know exactly how you feel about these issues. Felt the same way too. However, I found that after working with 1000’s of kids in a Martial Arts Licensed Daycare Center. We are all winning lotto tickets that showed up here in physical form and picked our trusted advisors (parents) to show us how the world works, not to be imprinted on how they want us to be. But to activate, train and develop our “I AM a Genius” Code (Thumb Print) with all missing life skills before leaving the nest so we can share our gifts with the world and live a successful life.

      You don't deal with that at all. Adults are not children. It is also not your child to worry about. You just remove yourself from the situation. If your son chose that woman, that is his wish and he will deal with it himself. It's not your place to even talk about it, it's their relationship and their family.

    It's funny, in a grim sort of way, that nowadays, we seem to have a need of so called experts, on TH-cam telling us how to handle our children. In earlier times, not so long ago, grandfathers, fathers and mothers with the presence of uncles, aunts, neighbours and friends, communicated their experiences, helping each other. Besides, relatives and neighbours used to take care of difficult moments when parents were losing it with their toddler, almost. It's actually the parents' state of emotional balance that is at the core of handling their kid's tantrums, using common sense and patience. Mindfulness as well.

      Thanks for your comment Devon. I agree, parenting these days is different for many people than is was in generations past. It can be very lonely, exhausing and overwhelming if you don't have the benefit of an extended family or community to support you. I think it's great that people have a range of options for seeking support and finding new ways of handling situations when they feel that they aren't parenting they way that they would like to, or when they feel they want to do things differently from how they were raised. Parenting is hard work! I do not profess to be an expert, but I do like to share what I've learned from my studies and experience, in the hope that it can help others.

      @@PlayfulPathways Please, you don't have to defend yourself and your work. My comment isn't directed at you, it's the phenomenon of this present time, that internet creates more than ever a tendency to grasp for solutions, answers, and advice from the outside in, while the inside is the DIY reservoir for self-reliance, and authentic personal solutions. Besides, it breeds resilience and confidence, in an inner foundation, an embodiment.
      Nowadays, parents' confidence is paper-thin, easy to tear apart by a comment or opinion that is different than their own. Thinking for oneself is out of fashion often. I'm an experienced nanny, and I've observed this trend.

    With my godson I just leave the room and let him cry it out, I check on him every one minute. I don’t know why he gets aggressive at times but I tell him “Stop you know better” he looks at me mad and starts to throw his head into something and at that point I just look at him like you’re hurting yourself he actually realizes it and simmers down. She knows if something irritates her she will cry the hell out and I'm done. Not my child not my responsibility and obligation. But I'm so fed up of hearing her cry it's exhausting me and it keeps me from getting a good sleep. I already talked to my husband to talk to his sister about this because I really can't. We are all for child development but what about my mental health? This is affecting me already.

    • @PlayfulPathways
      @PlayfulPathways  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. Dealing with toddler tantrums can be very frustrating and exhausing, but it's important to remember that at 2yrs 8months your child does not yet have the ability to manipulate or understand long term consequences/responses. Offering comfort and sympathy to a child who is upset or distressed is the best way to get them back to a regulated state and help them learn to understand and cope with their feelings. You don't have to change your limit, rule or expectation, and in fact it doesn't help your child learn to cope with disappointment/ frustration if you change the boundary because they are struggling to accept it. You can maintain the expectation AND offer them comfort - this is the way to support children to learn to self-regulate.

    • @PlayfulPathways
      @PlayfulPathways  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question. Tbh, if a child is screaming so loudly that they can't hear you, then they are unlikely to be in a condition to understand what you are saying. The best thing to do is to make sure that you are calm and regulated (modelling deep breathing can help you both), sit with them (if you can) and offer comforting gestures or sounds (think low, slow and quiet) until they have started to calm down, then you can start to use words to connect with them. Leave all the more demanding talking stuff until they are fully calm and back in their thinking mind.

      Most likely the mom said it to the child before, it could have been even said as a joke to another adult: "When he is throwing tantrums, I feel like I want to k*ll that child". Children don't understand jokes and they don't understand sarcasm, they will take everything literally and then repeat it back to adults in a different situation.

      Horrible lol. Imagine that whenever u had emotions someone poured water on you. Ice water doesn’t teach self regulation. It doesn’t teach them to distinguish their emotions. It shows that their dad is lazy and doesn’t wanna do the work with the child and help them through it

    My parents are shit at discipline they're mexican so their way of discipline was shouting their fucking lungs out or beating. They stopped disciplining the younger kids and now they are out of control I am combing home to see my family for a month and I am trying to finds ways on how to help them, because i feel like my mom gave up on raising them. I feel that she thinks that taking care off kids is just cleaning after them and feeding them but that's not it. They need to be thought rights and wrongs and teach them sympathy. And also not be such slobs. I feel like I'm stuck because I don't know what to do.

    Hearing you speak while seeing your mouth closed because the video is not in sync is incredibly annoying.

    Spankings need to be legal. Kids need discipline same as adults. But because they are provided for there are no consequences that will instill good behavior. One good spanking will curb 90 percent of future misbehavior. There were no school shooters in the days of spankings I can verify that.
