    What do I do when my toddler screams over me during my attempts at all these steps ? I try to wait and give space but sometimes that results in him hurting himself. Also the last step sometimes triggers him back into the tantrum

    My 16mo daughter has mini tantrums and throws herself around into the couch haha😂 its actually really cute and funny the way she does it (i never let her see me smiling or chuckling about it) .. But its still a tantrum and i just squat down on the floor and she eventually runs to me and throws her arms around my neck, i give her lots of kisses and it ends pretty quickly, as for now at this age.

    I try to do the reflecting thing but she often interrupts or screams over me before I can get the idea across. Maybe she struggling because she has big emotions and doesn’t know how to express them, not because she’s trying to take her anger out on me. It’s really hard to tell. She’s 6 and she’s just now within the past 2 weeks staying dry, so it took her a long time to master that. She used to be defiant when I reminded her or told her to go to the bathroom and about a 6 months to a year ago she finally listened and decided she was tired of cleaning up the messes. I had to let her figure it out on her own, but I can’t let her figure this out on her own, or can I? Some days it’s so bad that I tell her to be angry in her room, and apparently feels like she’s being abandoned, and won’t stay in her room (her door opens inward, so I can’t stand there to hold it closed like I’ve seen Super Nanny do). So when she doesn’t get her angry energy out in her room and comes out screaming, I take my 9 year old into my room and close the door. It’s not what I want to happen, but if I’m helping her solve her problem and she is screaming over me there’s not much I can do until she stops screaming. When she’s calm we talk about that, and she understands that, but then doesn’t remember what she learned yesterday, and the cycle continues. She may have ADHD or autism, but I’m not sure. Now I do want to buy that book Say What You See, and keep watching more of your videos. Thank you!

      You don't deal with that at all. Adults are not children. It is also not your child to worry about. You just remove yourself from the situation. If your son chose that woman, that is his wish and he will deal with it himself. It's not your place to even talk about it, it's their relationship and their family.

      Have a look at my videos on why toddlers have tantrums and how to handle tantrums. Obviously your 5 year old isn't a toddler, but the same principles of how your child's brain may be functioning when they're upset still apply. I hope that helps!

  • @Mr.Goodkat

    Get someone in your personal life like your husband to give you orders for example cleaning your room and if you don't obey when he tells you too, you have no one to blame but yourself when he gives you the consequence, honestly adults aren't capable of keeping their cool when being treated like and talked to like this so why should we expect children to be? do they have a higher level of emotional control? it's simply condescending and misopaedic. The "golden rule" has been around for thousands of years across innumerable countries, it's actually to "treat other's how you like being treated" it's not what's stated in this video of be calm and collected while not treating other's how you like being treated, a threat politely worded and calmly carried through is still a threat, in fact it's more de-thatched and inhuman doing it with no emotion. Punishments and rewards encourage self centeredness, decrease empathy, neglect an opportunity for communication/negotiation (aka training in logic and reasoning) establish an unhealthy power dynamic which encourages conflict and "might makes right" all of which are horrible for humanity.

    My almost 4 year old grandson when he's having tantrums would say to his mother "I want to kill you " what's that all about? It breaks my heart 😢she's really good at handling herself and him..I don't hear what she'll say to him when he sees that cuz I run away with the 2 year old when older brother is about to throw a fit

    • @yuliamarynik

      Most likely the mom said it to the child before, it could have been even said as a joke to another adult: "When he is throwing tantrums, I feel like I want to k*ll that child". Children don't understand jokes and they don't understand sarcasm, they will take everything literally and then repeat it back to adults in a different situation.

    My 2 years old 8 month son in his random mood could deliberately not eating or eat less than he should so that my wife would be angry then he proceed to throwing his tantrum crying out loud. Usually after that my wife would give him a hug and sympathy which is my son/s goal all along. So to deal with this? and this is just one of many example

    • @PlayfulPathways
      @PlayfulPathways 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. Dealing with toddler tantrums can be very frustrating and exhausing, but it's important to remember that at 2yrs 8months your child does not yet have the ability to manipulate or understand long term consequences/responses. Offering comfort and sympathy to a child who is upset or distressed is the best way to get them back to a regulated state and help them learn to understand and cope with their feelings. You don't have to change your limit, rule or expectation, and in fact it doesn't help your child learn to cope with disappointment/ frustration if you change the boundary because they are struggling to accept it. You can maintain the expectation AND offer them comfort - this is the way to support children to learn to self-regulate.

    How do you speak to them if they're screaming so loud nobody can hear anything?

    • @PlayfulPathways
      @PlayfulPathways 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the question. Tbh, if a child is screaming so loudly that they can't hear you, then they are unlikely to be in a condition to understand what you are saying. The best thing to do is to make sure that you are calm and regulated (modelling deep breathing can help you both), sit with them (if you can) and offer comforting gestures or sounds (think low, slow and quiet) until they have started to calm down, then you can start to use words to connect with them. Leave all the more demanding talking stuff until they are fully calm and back in their thinking mind.

    I don’t have enough life in me to give all my kids different options on what to wear, many people don’t have options for their kids financially, meaning they only have a small amount of money to buy one winter jacket. I give my kids two options and neither one of those options is good for them, and i don’t want them to get cold and then get sick, so i guess they are staying inside until they listen.

      This video is pointless. That lady thinks that we have energy to play and explain with the child endlessly. That´s not true. We have our limits in how much anger etc... we can absorb. Realistically, there are many videos, non of them is practical. All I can recommend is to go out. Fresh air and sport. The child must be physically exhausted a bit. In other words, the answer is not in the baby, but in thinks around what to do. Move, move, move...thanks
