I had a similar handlebar mounted light, with two of those powerful cree LEDs. While the light itself was immensely satisfying, the battery pack was less so. It's four of those 18650 batteries snapped together, and in my particular case the tiny "controller" malfunctioned rather quickly after six months of use, first flickering and then not working altogether. My current setup is a far more modest single-LED flashlight powered by one 18650 battery and a generic supermarket headlamp powered by three AAA batteries. This works nicely so far....

Yes, the included battery pack cells are crap. I ordered a new battery pack but I dont think it has much better cells. I do have good experiences with dx TrustFire branded cells. I am still using a pair of 7 year old cells in my headlamp.
I had to re solder the power wire from the original battery pack. I figure it shouldnt be too difficult to make a new pack from 4 good quality cells. I will look into that when the current pack completely dies.

May I ask what you're working as? With your complete equipment of tools and the ability to solder cells without hurting yourself or setting the house on fire it's probably something handy....?

I am actually a language teacher at University. So not so handy. :) But I have a background with rc model cars and thats were my special equipment dates back to. And I have never soldered 18650 cells but assume it can be done somehow.

A man of wisdom! Hooray! "not so handy" does your skills injustice - the CNC milling part of the outer chainring replacement was brillant.
