    I was in a house fire, and the ceiling collapsed right on my head, so hard it cracked the side of my helmet, right were my flashlight was mounted. Even like that, the Fenix survived, and 10 years later, I still have it!

      @@bansheedearg House fires never bothered me too much, other than the fact that I'm responding to one of the worst days in a person's life. Everything they know and love, a literal life's worth of things and memorabilia, up in smoke. But as far as the personal danger, it's really not so bad. You're highly trained for the situation, and, more importantly, you're with your Brothers. You put your life in their hands, and they put theirs in yours.
      What actually did bother me, and what I actually was frightened of, is brush fires. Oh man, those are bad. Really bad. I don't like them. You can control a house fire, because you know how the fire is going to react, what it's going to do next. Not so with a brush fire. They are nearly unpredictable in how they behave.

    As an experienced flashlight reviewer, I'm glad to see someone put instrumented tests in front of such a large audience. I did note a few things during the video which I hope will be helpful for the next time you do a video on lights:
    Some of the lights were producing scanlines in the video, indicating they use PWM (rapid flickering) for brightness control. This is not obvious to human eyes until either the light source or an illuminated object moves quickly, but can be disorienting when it does, and can be a problem if the light is used to illuminate a photo or video. Flashlight reviewers generally consider this a flaw.
    Color rendering is an important trait for some applications. Color temperature (blue/yellow balance), tint (red/green balance), and color rendering index are all relevant to color rendering. Most LEDs underrepresent a large fraction of the spectrum daylight provides, leading to washed out colors. The Sofirn's flood LED and the Zebralight have much higher CRI than the others.
    Comparing runtime in the highest mode when the sustained brightness differs greatly doesn't seem like a very useful test. Perhaps time over a certain number of lumens or candela, starting in the lowest mode that hits that number would be a good way to compare.
    I don't think the Zebralight was on its highest mode. It claims 1568 lumens, and every independent test of a Zebralight I have seen found it was at or very near its claimed output.
    The Olight battery is proprietary, having an extra contact. While most lights from most brands can use batteries of the correct size from other brands, the Olight cannot. Many people consider this a significant flaw.

    • @mrtdiver
      @mrtdiver หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Yeah, you really need a flashalholic to do flashlight reviews. We really care about the quality of the light. Things like you mentioned. PWM (rapid flickering) - just like the garbage fluorescent lights. And color rendering index.
      I really like my Zebralights. They seem to be built like tanks.

      @@colin_actually Most Olight models that use a Li-ion battery require a proprietary battery, or use a non-removable battery. For some similar magnetic charging lights that take standard batteries, look at Skilhunt, which also offers optional high-CRI LEDs in most models.

      @1pcfred หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      What dulls knives is how you sharpen the knife and what the knife is made out of. How you use the knife has an impact on performance too. Don't scrape with the blade. Glass would be a very poor thing to make a cutting board out of. Anyone that does that shouldn't be playing with a sharp knife in the first place. So I guess it works out.

    • @vinster8884

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@vinster8884 wood is a variable material due to it being natural. There's a lot of different wood species. Just where the wood grew can have an impact on qualities. Some wood is notoriously hard on tools. It has a high silica content in it. I'd still say wood is a better choice than glass or stone would be though. My cutting boards are mostly wood. I have some plastic ones though.

I’m truly surprised it didn’t do better in the test and have to wonder if it was in the low high setting 🤔. A fast double click gives you a high/low in each high/medium/low setting. My main headlamp has been through a wash cycle twice, is used daily as my house is off grid and on top of that I’m a carpenter and it’s the light i use whenever I need light in craw spaces or attics or whenever I’m painting etc. I have worn it so much I have went through 3 head bands, eventually the elastic just gives up haha. As an electrical and lighting designer I have a lot I could say here. Especially wanted to mention anything over 4,000 lumens for sustained lighting in such a small package is unrealistic as that would require around 40W input power. The thermal dissipation required to cool such an LED would be much larger than these head mounted light modules can achieve for a sustained load. Thanks for the video!

      Field control systems engineer here, the important parameters for a premium work light is CRI so that wire colour can be better distinguished. Generally 300 lumens with 90⁰ or 120⁰ flood beam completely free of hot spot is most easy for eyes. Another factor is driver efficiency so you can work long hours without changing battery which can be really annoying. Last but not least is the weight, no matter how comfort the headband is wearing heavy light for long period strains the head and neck. Zebralight works best for me in the past 15 years

    Fantastic video !!
    I’ve bought and tried many headlamps in the past 25 years. I’ll share what I’ve learned for my personal needs.
    I know now that I don’t need a long throw or a bright spot beam.
    I hate large size and weight. 99% of my use needs a reasonably bright and even flood beam out to about 20 feet. Usually closer than that. My favorites are tiny and featherweight.
    Favorite power is single AA lithium non-rechargeable. It is quicker and simpler to slap in a fresh AA when needed than to fuss with any other mode. I just make sure 2 fresh batteries are always in the pouch. Nitecore and Streamlight are my favorite tiny lights. My newest Nitecore was $20 at Amazon and the elastic head cord pops off I can clip it to my hat brim. I’m gonna buy three more so they will be handy no matter where I’m at. If I need industrial blindability I’ll grab one of my many monsters. Yeah, I’m an addict. 🤜🤛

    Great headlamp video! I "do not" recommend headlamp flashlights with lumens greater than 500 lumens. The reason is you do not need this much brightness this close to you as your working. My all-time favorite is the Coast brand PH 25 flashlight headlamp, I bought it at Lowes. It has beam adjustability, light weight, super durable, and WAY More features. I bought 4 plastic mounts for it. I glued one of the mounts to my Kask helmet. It unclips fast and stays securely mounted. I have used it for over 10 years! I continue to use it all day long. Some people say I look like a nerd when I have it on. Oh well, when working on cars, low light conditions, or in attics, this is my best safety devise I continue to recommend to all!

  • @umchoyka

    Electrical engineer here. Just for reference for those shopping for spot lighting products like flashlights or headlamps: An actual 30,000 lumen fixture using standard output LEDs by necessity would require a rectangular form factor of something like 24" x 12" x 4" (120 cm x 60 cm x 20cm) just for the LEDs and drivers alone and would consume ~300W. Higher output LEDs might shrink that size a little bit but the power consumption would increase correspondingly.
    For reference, a li-ion battery that weighs 1kg (2.2lbs) could output about 330W for an hour.
    Claims of 100,000 lumens would require triple the power output of that example fixture. Also claiming 8 hour battery life at that power output means you'd expect to be carrying 24kg (50lbs) of battery, not to mention the weight of the light and drivers themselves.

    • @mattgmann
      @mattgmann หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      This isn't exactly true. There are plenty of LEDs capable of producing 120-200 lumen/watt. A Lumintop Mach 4695 puts out 24000+ real lumens with 8 xhp50.3 LEDs. There are in fact consumer lights that can produce 100,000 lumens. They are actively cooled monsters with large custom battery packs. They're also very, very expensive.

    • @youling1997
      @youling1997 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      highest brightness only lasts seconds to minutes.

    • @umchoyka
      @umchoyka หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      @@mattgmann These calcs are from a fixture with 168 lumens / watt @ 3000K. There are LEDs that can output >250lm/W but again that would require additional power and probably specialized cooling.
      Sure, with active cooling you could squeeze a bit more out but that also requires additional power.

    • @4nlimited3dition_4n3d
      @4nlimited3dition_4n3d หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Yeah those flashlights that actually put out 100 000 lumens can only really do so for some 30 seconds. Then the output drops because of the overheating. They can't sustain such a heat output in such a small form factor for very long. I have a small-ish light that claims over 10k lumens, but in reality it can only do that for a minute or even less before ramping down.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some of the lumens claims here would start fires with the beam. 100,000 lumens. That's anti aircraft searchlight levels of power. You can't have something like that strapped to your head. Horn decibel ratings are even funnier. There's horns on Amazon that claim to be louder than when Krakatoa erupted.

    Another excellent video Todd. Can't beat Fenix brand headlamps. Anything with a battery pack in the back is a no go for me, especially for working in the shop crawling under tractors, cars, and trucks. Speaking of shop work, what I use in the shop is not what I would use out on the trail. I am a member of my county search and rescue team so the needs out in the wilderness are a little different. Since we are typically out in the mountains here in So. Oregon, we are typically out in the rain and snow so the headlamp needs to be waterproof and provide light that is good for trail finding (or paths through the brush) and for close proximity (working in close with team members and providing first aid to those we rescue). Also, since we are usually out overnight, I need something that can last at least eight hours or more. Therefore, a headlamp that uses AA or AAA batteries works best since they are easily swapped out (there are no electrical plugs in the woods and no time to plug the headlamp into a portable charger). We are required to wear our hard hats at night, so weight and comfort are not a factor...although fitting on a hard hat is a good thing. For these kind of demands, I find the Black Diamond Storm to be an excellent choice.

      These headlamps are for working. They make specific ones for hunters. They have different colored lights for blood, red light for sneaking, and a strobe feature in case you get injured. Would love to see them tested as well. Some of the cheap ones just use lense colors to trick you into thinking it has a black light.

    13:20 - Something to note about the Ledlenser. The 4,000 lumen rating is for the 'Boost' mode, which is only a brief 10 seconds before dimming. What was tested was very likely the 'High' mode, for which this light has a 1,800 Lumen rating. Essentially, spot on.
    And it having a hotspot that's higher than the rest of the flood makes sense. More light on the ground, while still giving a decent throw.

      Yeah when I saw that throw pattern, I thought that's perfect for walking/cycling etc - decent spot, with more throw on the ground than average with an 'aligned' lamp. Perhaps not as useful for working under a car although probably not a particularlyhorrible compromise.
      That said, it's a bloody expensive thing, but then LED Lenser have a reputation for decent after sales support etc etc. I've had a few LED Lenser torches over the years and they've generally been very solid, reliable things. Only have one these days, a AAA pencil job that has been battered over the years, but lives in the car now.

    I have been extremely happy with my Zebralight. I have the flood, 5000K color temperature version, and it’s an incredible light.
    I am wondering whether or not you actually had it at full brightness for the test. Each brightness mode has two levels it can be in (e.g. there’s a high 1, high 2, med 1, med 2, low 1, low 2 level). The sublevel is retained between power cycles, so I’m wondering if it was set to the lower brightness level of high. Double tapping the power button will toggle between the two sublevels.
    I also would have loved to see a low brightness test for these headlamps. While the brightest setting can be useful, having a low brightness setting is very nice if you’re out camping with others and you don’t want to disturb people who are sleeping around you.

    I bought a Princeton Tec LED headlamp around 15 or so years ago after watching the famous angler Jeremy Wade night fishing on the Amazon river... me and my nephew, (2 fishing-mad anglers ourselves) were watching the TV programme and spotted the brand name on the headband.. I immediately googled it and we ordered one each right there & then !... I think they were around €160 each at the time....
    Both are still working perfectly, but on mine, the plastic battery box got brittle & eventually completely disintegrated about 18 months ago (I do a LOT of cold weather fishing) ...
    As the battery box was a back-of-the-head design which made it unwearable when lying down sleeping on overnighter sessions, I took the breakage as an opportunity to convert mine from the 4 std. AAs to a small 5v lithium powerbank which I now keep in my fishing jacket pocket... this has worked great, taking weight off my head and allowing me to lie down whilst still wearing it... 🤗
    Loving your channel, longtime subbed... keep up the good work, man !!🙂
    From the Emerald Isle
