Ebike Hub Motor Planetary Gear Clutch Replacement

  • My Ebike had almost 6000 miles on it and from last week it started to make crazy noises and vibrations from the hub motor. And the bike was not riding as smooth as before. It feels like loosing power or something is dragging it from behind. So, I opened up the hub motor and found out that one of the planetary gears bearing was messed up. So I have replaced it with a new one. Now it is very smooth and no crazy noises, just the normal motor noise.
    You can see in the beginning of the video (before replacing the planetary gear) the hub motor was making grinding noises and the wheel was slowing down and stops real fast.
    At the end of the video (after replacing the planetary gear) you can see that the hub motor is running smooth with normal motor noise and the wheel was keep on spinning for a long time.

    question: at 3:26 you're putting the gears back on but the video skips. What is the trick to get the gears back onto the axle? I am stuck at this stage; they only slip on about halfway to engage the main gear but won't slide any further on. @ebikepov

    • @EbikePOV

      Mine was easy to push it in. Try to wiggle the clutch assembly while pushing it in. Or try to spin the clutch assembly/gears while pushing. That may work. Thank you

    Did you have washers between the bearings and the axle when opening up the motor. My motor does and stops really quick there is so much resistance

    • @EbikePOV
      @EbikePOV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello friend, The resistance I think it is from the dried up grease in between those white planetary gears and the steel clutch that holds them. It happened to me two years ago when there was only 500 miles on my bike. I have noticed the noise from the motor got louder and there is a lot of resistance from the motor. It was not spinning freely and stops real fast. And when I ride, it was so hard to pedal (feels like something is holding my bike from the back). When I opened the motor, the first thing I noticed was, there was a lot of white lithium grease all over the motor. They have probably over greased it when they assembled the motor. And there was also a lot of grease settled in between the gears and the clutch housing. You know when these gears are over greased - the excess grease will gets out of the grooves and settle in between the gear body and the clutch body. The space in between the gear body and the clutch housing is very thin and we don't need any grease there because they are not touching each other. But the excess grease gets in there and creates an unwanted friction. During the time, the friction will cause them to heat up and dries up fast, which causes the resistance.
      Anyway, I have cleaned all the old grease out and applied new grease. After that the motor was kind of quiet and the wheel started spinning freely.
      Try it. But DO NOT OVER GREASE
      Thank you

    How do I find out what size gears my magnum pathfinder has in the rear hub

    • @EbikePOV
      @EbikePOV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure about that. It's very hard to guess what size gears they are using by just looking at the size or wattage of the motor.
      In my case it was a 750 watt rear hub motor. When I searched online for "750 watt rear hub motor planetary gear replacement" I saw a lot of them. I bought two of them ( one nylon and one steel ) without even checking the size of the gears. I thought 750 watt hub motors use the same size gears. But I was wrong. The gears I bought were 38mm. But the gears inside the motor was 47mm. Then I searched online for that particular size and I got the exact fit.
      So, I will say, contact the manufacturer and ask them what size gears they are using. Or take your time and disassemble the rear hub motor and measure yourself.
      Hope this helps

    I have a Bafang rear geared hub motor... are all these Planetary Gear Clutch Replacements interchangeable/universal? My motor is labeled "RM G0F4.D" and looking it up it's a 1000w motor, although it's marketed as a 750w motor. It's in the Ride1UP Revv 1, that's my bike. It's very noisy and I guess they all are but it's only a matter of time before it goes I'm sure. I'd like to spend the $40 to have a backup set if it craps out on me. Do you know if it's a universal interchangeable part? Thanks.

    My bike would make noise only sometimes and would go away if I cut the power to the motor and then re-apply power. I think one of the bearings was a little loose on the nylon gears, replacing the whole one way clutch and gears assembly fixed it. Now its quiet like new! I used mobil 28 grease. I also used a tool called "impact driver" to loosen the Philips screws without stripping them. And I used a 4inch gear puller to take off the clutch/gear assembly.

    • @EbikePOV
      @EbikePOV  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am using the nylon ones. After the replacement which is on the video, I have put about 7000 miles and it still going strong. Actually it was not the gear that messed up, it was the cheap bearing inside went bad. So, what I did was, replaced the steel bearings with ceramic bearings. It's less noisy and way stronger and smoother than the steel ones.
      Regarding your question, nylon gear or metal gear...? I don't have an experience with the metal gears. So, I don't know which one is better. But you can search online to find advantages and disadvantages between them.

    i dont know if hammering on the axle is a good idea as you can damage the end of the axle so that the torque plate wont go back on.
    many ebikes come with a very basic torque arm that is a teardrop shaped piece of metal that goes over the axle and bolts to the frame.
    the torque plate is made so precisely that there is not much room to fit so you may not be able to get the torque plate back on.
    you are better off using a gear puller.

      If i dont care about noice

    • @EbikePOV
      @EbikePOV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends upon what kind of noise you are hearing from the motor. You know, all the hub motors have a humming noise. That's normal. If that humming noise gets louder - that means there is some kind of resistance in the motor - which is caused by 1) low grease 2) too much grease or 3) dried up grease that settled in between the gears and the clutch body. All these causes a little resistance and louder motor noise. If you dont care about the resistance and the humming noise, then you dont have to worry about that.
      But, if the noise is kind of rattling, then you have to open up the hub motor and check out what is going on. There may be broken parts inside.
      In my case, one of the nylon gears bearing got messed up. That's not normal. It happened to me because, I have a lot of stuffs on my bike which makes it very heavy. That's why I changed the whole clutch assembly.
      Hope this will help you

      Thank you for your reply! Though I searched the Aliexpress website, but I couldn't find a similar model..(20inch?)
      I'd appreciate it if you could let me know the purchase link for the model.

      Hello friend, so sorry for the late reply. I just noticed it.
      You said right. I cannot find that link either. My purchase history for this bike was linked with my old profile which was deleted because of some issues with aliexpress. So, I was not able to access that particular order. I bought this bike back in 2019. At that time there was a lot. But now, I have searched their website for a similar one but I cannot find any.
      I used a picture of my bike on Google Lens and found some similar ones online. I will list them below

      I don't really know which one is better. When I searched online, it says marine grease are waterproof. Other than that it still the same. I have used mobil grease because it is way better than the white lithium grease that the bike came with.

    Clutch? What clutch? There’s no clutch in there, is there? It’s a motor and gears.

      I dont know what made you feel like its fake. I went through the problem and did this to fix it. At that time there was very little videos on youtube regarding this. Thats why I recorded it and uploaded it , so that it can help other people. Any way thanks for your comment.

      Try gear puller. That's easy. You can search for "gear puller" on amazon. There is a lot of them.
