      The Camry Hybrid is where most Toyota Hybrid fans will go if they need more room. The Corolla is oddly sized, actually smaller than the 11th gen Civic. So most folks will either go Prius or Camry on Hybrid side for car needs. I was amazed by how roomy the 11th gen Civic was compared to the Accord. I almost wonder if the Accord could be replaced by a 12th gen Civic.

      @@sn4rl277 The new Camry Hybrid is a very fine car and the AWD LE is easily the best sedan value on the market. However that does not mean the Corolla should be left to stagnate especially when better, more competitive Corollas are already in production. As regards the Prius, it is very appealing to some while others would consider it an indulgent and utterly impractical offering.

    All current Honda Hybrids work the same. They are serial hybrids. The layout of the motors doesn't matter. The traction motor powers the car all the time. The engine turns a generator that powers the traction motor and charges the battery. In certain situations at highway speeds the two motors can be clutched together effectively making the engine connected to the wheels. (in the CR-V there are two clutches, one for lower speeds and one for highway speeds). They call it an eCVT but it isn't a transmission at all. It is direct drive like an electric car. Older Honda hybrids would just wind up the engine when you hit the accelerator but I think they added the rpm changes to mimic shifts to make people more comfortable. I think they only do this in sport mode if the car has it. It is very convincing I've found. I've never driven any other hybrids but I have heard that sometimes they feel a little weird during transitions to different power delivery. Honda has done a remarkable job making these cars feel 'normal'.

    • @aspecreviews
      @aspecreviews หลายเดือนก่อน

      The serial hybrid concept seems very well suited to simulated gear changes, where you could click up and down through 6 or 7 predetermined relationships between engine speed and vehicle speed. The top predetermined ratio could even be just direct drive, and the ones below it would be using the serial hybrid setup.

    • @jeffjo8732
      @jeffjo8732 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @aspecreviews The serial concept means there is no relationship, predetermined or otherwise, between engine speed and vehicle speed. Most of the time when it runs, the engine is at 2000 rpm and 34 HP. (Well, that was the last generation; the engine was tweaked a little, but the concept is the same.) That is where it is most efficient. It powers only the generator, and the Power Control Unit adjusts the 34 HP (25 kW) electric flow up or down to send the right amount to the motor. You can see this happening in the Power Flow Meter.
      Simulated shifts could be accomplished without adjusting power to the motor at all - just change the engine's operation but compensate for the change with the battery. But this would only change the sound and decrease fuel efficiency. You wouldn't get the momentary loss of power which too many drivers think means a gain. So they also adjust that power, _independent_ of the engine changes. This entire process means you lose both power, and fuel, in order to get those simulated shifts.
      When Kirk "torque brakes" at 11:50? That does absolutely nothing physical to the engine. It does not "spool up" anything. What it does, is turn off the simulated shifting so you can get this car's actual 0-60 time.

    • @jeffjo8732
      @jeffjo8732 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@afcgeo882 "The parallel hybrid application also separates the engine RPMs from the wheel RPMs..." Parallel hybrid operation means a Motor-Generator drives the same drive shaft as the ICE. That is, the RPM (its already plural) of the engine and wheels are linked. In my 2018 Accord Hybrid, it means that ENGINE_RPM=37*MPH. But this is only used for "overdrive." In a Hyundai, it operates before the DCT 8 transmission so there are eight ratios.
      "... as is in Ford Escape/Maverick and most Toyotas." They use what is called "Parallel-Serial" operation, as patented at the University of Maryland before Toyota sto..., er, "independently developed" the same thing. Parallel-Serial, sometimes Power-Split, means that one MG operates, essentially, in parallel and the other in serial (the ICE drives it while it powers the other motor). This is accomplished thru a planetary gearset. In a Toyota, it maintains the relationship 13*MG2=5*MG1+18*ICE. The wheels are geared directly to MG2, and are always "linked" to the engine. Even when it is off. The RPM of MG1 controls the RPM of the ICE. That's why Toyota calls it an "electrically controlled CVT."
      "Parallel hybrids have more flexibility ...." Assuming you mean parallel-serial, it is because they need it. They do not provide better performance. All it means is that either MG can be in serial, or in parallel, operation.
      "... and are able to deliver more power." That depends on the sizes of the components, not the system. The most powerful hybrids are serial.

      The problem with roadside assistance is that they won’t have a tire on their truck either. So, they can only tow you to the dealer that will sell you a very overpriced replacement tire if they are even open at the time.
      You can have AAA tow you to an independent tire shop, but they may also be closed at the time you need them or may be out of stock in your tire size. So, plan on adding a few days in a motel during your holiday weekend road trip.

    I believe Toyota will phase out the 1.8 hybrid powertrain in favor of the 2.0 like the one in the Prius & Cross hybrid. They just did that on the Lexus UX for 2025. When they put that Prius powertrain in the Corolla without adding too much price then it will become a pretty good buy especially if you just get the low trim LE. Today I was able to test drive the 2025 Civic hatchback hybrid, sport touring version. There is a lot to like about the car. I sat in the rear seat and had decent amount of leg room. During the test drive I punched the accelerator and the car really took off.
    Nice acceleration and power. Of course no spare tire. But that's becoming normal on hybrids. The cargo compartment has lots of space, much more than the Civic sedan. Fold down the rear seats and it almost has the same room as a small SUV. The window sticker has a price of around $34k. I noticed the sticker didn't show the usual dealer add-ons, such as paint and door protection, anti-theft, and other things that most people don't want. Adaptive cruise control? No thank you! The one setting I applaud is the regen braking turning off after each use. What's always been missing in the big rigs is the "jake brake" having to manually turn it off once set. Forgetting to turn it off and starting from a stop interferes with the manual shifting and acceleration. That said, my ex-wife's brand new (2000 miles) HR-V was destroyed in the path of Hurricane Helene. I've been recommending she replace the HR-V with this Civic Hatchback Hybrid. ADX for Acura will be revealed this year yet. Should be the same 1.5t & CVT from Integra.
      HR-V hybrid has to come next year if Honda wants to keep their momentum with that model.

    I would buy this car if it had a 360 camera system and a larger infotainment screen. It's expensive compared to it's competitors so it should have those items. I love Honda so I hope they make a few improvements. I'm not a fan of the new front end. The pre-refresh was much more attractive.

    Kirk, why did Honda remove the fog lights and the integrated dual exhaust tips on the new Civic and the Accord?

    In Japan you can get fog lights as an option, but of course America doesn't get it. 🙄

    I used to own ELANTRA hybrid and I was getting 57 miles per gallon. Nothing beats that. but on the other hand Honda will probably last longer and the stock tires on ELANTRA are just pure garbage. You get flat tire all the time.

      Test drove the camery hybrid and the civic sedan hybrid sport touring. Hands down way better of a driving experience in the Honda.

    • @worst-hd-player
      @worst-hd-player หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@matthewfink490 could you go into the detail? What was better about the driving experience specifically with the civic? It’s to my consensus that the civic will handle better and is quicker but has the rougher suspension, louder on the interior, smaller, and has worse mpg in real world scenarios? Also something I felt when I sat in the regular 2024 civic sport touring hatchback and sedan variants compared to the 2024 Camry XSE (v6 and I4 variants) is that the Camry just feels so much more solid.

      I came to a Sport Touring Hybrid from a Passat and Honda did a fantastic job. I would definitely recommend the Civic and it’s also not going to cost you a bloody fortune to maintain (thats before even considering the negative maintenance the Hybrid system brings to the table). VW’s even the old reliable 2.5 I5 will always have a minor problem that can basically torpedo the engine.

    Our next car is going to be a hybrid. EVs, though decent, are not there yet. They need another 5-10 years to figure out the charging, range, and cold weather issues.
