Colin Gonsalves on Manipur: Winning Elections Doesn’t Absolve you of Crimes Against Humanity

- Union home minister Amit Shah visited Manipur and blamed the present conflict on a High Court order regarding the Meitei demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Dr. Colin Gonsalves, founder of the Human Rights Law Network, is arguing the case before the High Court and outlines the matter from a legal standpoint. Based on the evidence collected by his legal team and his understanding of the situation on the ground, he argues forcefully that Shah’s accounting of the blame is incorrect and describes the extent to which the Manipur government under N. Biren Singh was responsible for orchestrating the violence.
Gonsalves, on behalf of his clients, is pleading with the state to arrest those organised groups which have unleashed the violence as a starting point towards peace. He also calls on the media and ordinary citizens of India to introspect and question the state of Indian democracy.

One fact the national media always seems to get wrong:
The violence did not start during the peaceful demonstration/rally. The rally ended peacefully after a memorandum was submitted to the DC, Churachandpur. Then as the people went back to their homes, the ones living close to the Bishenpur district border (meitei dominated area starting point) noticed that some miscreants had set fire to the foundation of the Anglo-Kuki War 1917-1919 Centenary Gate located at Leisang. Leisang is located well within the Kuki dominated area. However as many thousands had left their homes to participate in the tribal unity rally, their homes and areas had been left relatively deserted.
Here it is pertinent to mention that in view of the tribal unity rally to be held on the 3rd of May, the meiteis had already started their "counter-blockade" on the 2nd of May (as if anybody had said anything about a blockade) and meitei mobs had also gathered from the previous night at the Churachandpur - Bishenpur border.
As it was obvious that some miscreants from across the district had taken advantage of the relatively deserted area to come in and set fire to the Centenary Gate which is held very dear to the Kuki-Zo community, obviously tempers flared and altercations broke out between the two sets of mobs from either side of the district boundary. It was then that the heavily armed police commandoes from Bishenpur started firing tear gas to disperse the crowd (Churchandpur has no police commando force), which the meitei miscreants who had gathered the night before took advantage of to start setting some Kuki homes on fire behind the cover of the Bishenpur police commandoes. First, there appeared guns and gunfire from the meitei side, with shouts and slogans to "kill the Kukis", then to counter the rapid gunfire, some men rushed to the area with automatic arms to defend their side, the video of which has gone viral and is being portrayed as a part of the rally. No. This was well after the rally had ended and people had gone to their homes after submitting said memorandum to the DC, Churachandpur at the mini secretariat.
My point being, the Tribal Unity rally was not where the violence began as most media houses seem to be informed. The violence began when miscreants from across the district set fire to the Anglo Kuki War 1917-1919 Centenary Gate - the proverbial match that lit the fire. The reaction of the tribals was the excuse they needed to kickstart their well planned pogrom of ethnic cleansing of the Kukis. Well planned I say, because for years prior to this incident, the radicals on the meitei side duly guided and brainwashed by the Chief Minister N. Biren Singh with his communal rhetorics and fake propaganda had assembled youths in groups like Meitei Leepun and Arambai Tengol in the thousands, radicalising and training them for such an eventuality, imbibing in them the hatred for the Kuki-Zos which can clearly be seen from their own social media posts.
They only needed and excuse and/or opportunity to start the fire and the Tribal Unity rally against the Meitei ST demand on the 3rd of May 2023 gave them such an opportunity. And Manipur has been burning since then.
After the Kukis, the Nagas would most likely be next.
If this is how things went down sequentially then why do the Kuki Zomi intellectuals and experts that participate in panel discussions never emphasize this with clarity? Even if the Meitei CM and his cronies may have strategically and methodically preplanned the entire shitshow and enabled the wholesale demonization of the Kuki Zo people to justify their ethnic cleansing, why oh why did people fall for their straight-from-the-pits-of-hell evil schemes and react the way they did? Did the instigators from the Kuki Zomi side pause for a moment and think about what their retaliations would entail? Did they conveniently forget about the thousands upon thousands of Kuki Zo brothers, sisters, children, and elderly people in Imphal and the adjoining areas that would ultimately experience the absolute brunt of the madness? I suppose not. In all fairness, the Kuki Zomi people that have suffered the most are the people that didn't even participate in the ATSUM rally!

What a load of lies! The riot started post the rally because of a rumour of the kuki rebellion gate being burned. The kukis burned the meitei tribal minority houses in churachanpur. Then the Imphal meitei tribes retaliated

Every right thinking person including Meitei Community blames the CM & MP and it's Meitei Radical groups for the ongoing violent.
Because the bloodshed of Kuki in the Imphal valley cities in the innitial stages of the riots was more than 100+ Kuki civilians and burnt down their houses, churches and vehicles.

It has come to my attention, although I cannot confirm its veracity as I do not follow political affairs closely, that there are claims suggesting Narendra Modi, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat and current Prime Minister of India, played a role in instigating riots within the state during his tenure. Likewise, it is being alleged that the current Chief Minister of Manipur, Mr. Biren Singh, is attempting to emulate Modi's tactics, resulting in the present wave of violence in the region. Reportedly, this violence has led to the tragic loss of hundreds of lives among the Kukis minority group, leaving tens of thousands displaced and homeless. It appears evident that these targeted ethnic killings will persist unless the aforementioned Chief Minister is apprehended and held accountable for his actions.
Thus time the Manipur CM must be held accountable for crimes against humanity, and punishment metted out suitably as an example for future generations of leaders that they too will face the same course of action.

This is not going to go down well with the meitei community.
But afterall truth cannot be hidden.
Many leaders also presented wrong statistic/figure to justify their killings of minority kuki, one of such happening is that in Karan Thapar interview some leaders said kuki population percentage of Manipur was only one percent in 1901 and now kuki percentage increased to 16 percent, indirectly showing this increase is due to illegal migration. Such figure angered the Meitei and cause this crisis. Hence such instigation using wrong figures in the media must be investigated by the competent authority and necessary action be taken as per the law of the land.

Karan Thapar state the actual number that is in 1901 kuki population was more than 14% and according to 2011 census that's the last census taken in India, it's 16%.
So in 100 years there's an increase of 2 %
Don't throw imaginary figures.
All the Indian census are for public consumption.
The same can be said about meiteis too, they are just about 3 lacs in 1901 and now how come they have more than 35 lacs? Most of them are not original settlers, they are mxed with Bengalis and Thais. Look at their name, Kumars, Devi, Singh etc, which is not akin to Original settlers in Manipur. Meiteis are foreigners!

If Meiteis had a higher percentage of population and now it has decreased considerably, then there is a case of illegal migration.
We have seen huge Bangladeshi migration all across North East. So migration from Myanmar is not a big thing.
