I met John Oates in late 80s. He was in Montreal for F1 race. Shared a table with him at Winston Churchill's on Crescent St. Super nice and down to earth guy - we discussed car racing and not music.
First heard them in '74 with She's Gone, they seemed very cool in the '70's. The '80's brought hits like I Can't Go For That and Out Of Touch and they sounded great. Daryl's solo albums are excellent.
This is all very sad. Regardless of what the actual truth is, they're both at the end of their lives. They were like brothers. You guys gotta put your differences behind. Whatever they may be.
Almost all artists do their best work as young adults. Hall&Oates are no exception. That doesn't mean they should copy their younger selves; it's just the way it is.
What a whiner. The only reason John Oates has a significant reputation is BECAUSE of Daryl Hall. Brutal truth: John Oates became a huge pop star off the back of Daryl Hall. John is talented but never would've had the career he's had, or earned the money he has, without his association with Daryl Hall who wrote and sang 75% or more of the songs. There are numerous #1 "Hall & Oates" hits that John Oates neither plays nor sings on. Mugging in a music video or dancing on stage with isn't the same as actually writing, singing, or playing on a record. John Oates has been checked out of Hall & Oates for most of the last 30 years. Collecting a paycheck. That makes it comparatively easy for him to cash out. Daryl Hall has been100% in it on every record, at every show, from day 1 until now. For Oates to try to steal Daryl's control over how his name, likeness, and legacy are represented going forward -- in legal violation of their partnership agreement -- is despicable. This is Daryl Hall's ongoing life's work. Again, John Oates is a talented singer/songwriter but would never have become a big pop star because that's not really what he's great at writing nor performing. John Oates ruined his own reputation by attempting to f**k over Daryl Hall, and getting caught in the act. Laziness and shadiness with a big cherry of entitlement on top is a perfect recipe for ruining his "nice guy" reputation all by himself.
What value is the contribution of inspiration, even it takes the form of John Oats. Are the Beatles any worse off with Ringo in the band, who contributed little in the way of songwriting duties?
@@DrunkenRhinoceros not the same situation, on a couple of levels. 1) The Beatles were a band, Daryl Hall & John Oates were a duo. 2) Ringo played drums on all but a couple Beatles songs. John Oates did not play guitar on hundreds of Hall & Oates songs. 3) While Lennon & McCartney may have been inspired by and writing towards Ringo's drumming style, Daryl Hall most definitely was not writing towards John Oates' guitar style. The records and live bands always included a highly capable lead guitarist who did the heavy lifting (e.g. Chris Bond, Todd Sharp, Caleb Quaye, G.E. Smith, Pat Buchanan, T-Bone Wolk, Paul Pesco, Jimmy Rip, Richie Cerniglia, Jeff Catania, and Shane Theriot). Plus Steve Lukather, Jay Graydon, Dave Stewart, Robert Fripp, and Rick Nielsen, to name a few, who contributed guitar on records only. The only instance where I can think of Daryl Hall writing a song and guitar part inspired by the style of John Oates is "Time Won't Pass Me By" -- and another guitarist played the part on the record. Daryl and T-Bone selected and arranged a cover "What You See Is What You Get" for John on the 'Our Kind of Soul' album. Not a lot of examples in a 50 year career.
@@iconoclassicrecords So bands that used the 'Wrecking Crew' to make their hit records, are they justified in getting all the money and musical credits that session musicians did behind the scenes? Whether John Oates played guitar on any records is mute; Oates did contribute vocally, and Hall and Oates made money from the duo, whether you like it or not.
@@MrNatural-fq1tq I haven't made a single comment about money. But to use the Wrecking Crew example: if Al Jardine surreptitiously attempted to sell the rights to Brian Wilson's personal name & likeness to a third party while Brian was still alive, in violation of a written partnership agreement between them, and additionally attempted to sell related jointly-owned intellectual property such as "The Beach Boys," "Pet Sounds," all merchandizing rights, all online band properties (website, social media, etc.), and the exclusive ability to stage Beach Boys and Pet Sounds performances, whether by musicians, actors or holograms -- again, in violation of a written partnership agreement -- and THEN Al got caught in the act, blocked by the court, and went on national television to whine and play the victim -- then yes, I'd take issue with Al Jardine. And I happen to love Al's contribution to the Beach Boys, while also correctly recognizing it as a minority creative contribution versus that of Brian Wilson.

If Waters & Gilmour can agree to sell their Pink Floyd catalog, then I'd say Hall & Oates should have been a no-brainer. It's not what I like either, but it's how it's done today and Daryl Hall needs to realize this. Just take the money in your advanced age and enjoy your final years.
Not comparable. Pink Floyd's members came to an agreement to sell all of Pink Floyd's assets to Sony. Roger Waters didn't go behind David Gilmour's back, in violation of a legal partnership to sell to Sony and then get caught while a mediation process was already ongoing.
People used to joke about how Oates did nothing and it was Hall's band. But if that was the case Hall would have had a better solo career. Oates was a very important part. Hall has no right in saying Oates held him back. As far as the business relationship I can see however why Hall may object to Oates selling his publishing rights to a corporation. Too bad they could not work it out.
If all the huge hits that John Oates DOESN'T EVEN APPEAR ON had been credited as Daryl Hall records alone, the story would be very different. I have always been a Hall & Oates fan. I was 17 in 1980 and loved all their music. In 1985 I moved to New York City and met a guy, a musician who knew both of them. He said John was much more down to earth than Daryl. Regarding Billy Squier, also loved his music. After reading some of the comments about him, I can believe them. He whined like a spoiled baby that the video for Rock Me Tonite ruined his career. I admit he had some kick a$$ music, again I was a big fan of his but blaming a video and the PTB behind it for a career dip is dumb. He seemed so bitter about this, grow up already! Back to Hall & Oates, a pity their relationship came to this but to me they will always be remembered as one of the greatest pop duos of all time. Both gave us some great hits and should be proud of that.
In both of the recent shows that I have seen with Hall and Oates and then just Hall, Daryl constantly complained about the volume of his monitor. He would stop mid-song and complain to the audience that he had a sound guy he would fire after the show. I thought at the first show that it was a fluke. Later, at the second show, several years later, he did the exact same thing. Hall is a great artist. However, the behavior he exhibits live is just insulting to the band, crew, and the audience.
This must be Daryl's side of the story, but I listened to a video months ago, about John telling his side of the story, and its way different than this.
John spoke very respectfully of Daryl, and wished him well, and John said that Daryl has achieved his ultimate goal of being a solo artist. Cause John feels that that is what Daryl wanted all along.
Before the news of John trying to sell the music Oates was on a Los Angeles radio station and told Ellen K...someone is going to cry soon. A week later John blindsided Daryl. He's not so innocent
John Oates was the business man in the partnership. He was the one managing all the stuff while Daryl was the better songwriter and singer. Hall could take all that time off and leave it to Oates. Hall could worry about the future while John is weighed down taking care of the last five decades. Oates got tired. He couldn’t do it, anymore. Either he hands it over to someone else or it all collapses. Hence why there is never any discussion of Daryl stepping up to help John out.
John Oates is simply a malcontent. Throughout the band’s history and in-spite of Strong earnings of Hall and Oates, John always having money problems. The last attempt of bailing himself out of his problems he went behind Daryl’s back in his attempt to sell the band’s catalog. Mr Hall had to slap a lawsuit on his old partner to bring this to a halt. Any damage to his reputation is a direct result of his actions, not Daryl Hall’s.
@ He’s filed Bankruptcy in the past, sold off his airplane and toy’s. He tried to sell Daryl’s share that’s why he was successful in filing injunction. Google it for yourself
I wonder what would have happened if Daryl Hall would have become lead vocalist of Van Halen? Eddie Van Halen begged him when David Lee Roth left Van Halen.
Geez, they had there era back then and times changed. They just toured the last few years until John wen't after half the catalog causing the real devide. Daryl was not ready to sell what was 3/4 his?
Sometimes it's the wife that can break them up behind the scenes (Remember John and Yoko?) albiet, Yoko was not entirely behind the scenes. Not criticizing her, and I don't know the whole story other than what I read about it and what Paul has said in interviews.
I saw Hall at the Mountain Winery last fall and he sucked. Rundgrun played for an hour then Hall came out sat at the piano mumbled through 4 songs then just stood up and walked off. 200.00 per ticket. NEVER AGAIN
My sister when to one of the last Hall and Oates concerts today. She said Hall acted like he hated being there, stared at the keyboard, wnd had no energy. She went to their concert in the 80s and loved it. Hall is an egomaniac.
@@katyf7090 I saw hall and Oates in San Antonio in about 2017, I was front row center so i could see them both very well. It's always the same old story They just can't ride out the fame and money There is always one that thinks they're an artist A sneaky one Then the break up....Hall was an ass
It’s kind of amusing and sad that John Oates says that Daryl Hall can now have the solo career he always wanted. The man is 78. I mean, if he hasn’t found satisfaction in the music industry after 50+ years…
I think it really is about power and control. It is tragic. Very sad. Hall does not want to share the limelight with his former musical partner. Actually I suspect that was the original plan. Hall was the lead singer. Mostly. Hall and his manager may have hoped to freeze Oates out. He was just the back up singer right ? I don't condone this. However Hall did the lion's share of the singing etcetera. This is my personal theory built over the years. A secret plan. Maybe I am wrong ? Anyway........
This is very biased on the side of Daryl !!!! As the years progressed we could ALL see John being pushed into the role of a backup singer. John said so in interviews they had their time and now it's over
Partnerships are never a good idea unless you make everything clear in the beginning. Who gets credit, ownership, IP rights, management processes.. of course a couple of musical geniuses don’t think of these things and this is what happens.. I wonder how Bacharach & David, Campbell and Webb and John and Taupin survived intact?
@pb12661 Darryl plays guitar pretty good, and the keyboards, and sings amazing, and and is a good songwriter, and I would definitely go see him if he played near me, and you would have to pay me to go see John Oats
cant stand any of their dorky songs other than darryl halls 1986 song dreamtime. hall was an opportunist who inserted himself into background singing for other better artists ruining their songs

Another fan summed it up perfectly, a Genius and a guitar player!
@@davidmack4185 I actually prefer Daryl's SOLO music to the songs of their youth!
You do realize the guitar player has writing credits on the majority of the songs.
@@johncruz9357 While that is true, Daryl wrote the majority of the songs.
@@yvonnemaisonette9230 I’m assuming you’re not a musician. Everything to general public revolves around lyrics. Nobody ever thinks about the arrangements. I guarantee you Daryl or John brought lyrics to the rehearsal and ideas were bounced back and forth till the final arrangement was done. The sad part about that is you don’t get any credit for that. The arrangement is just as important as the lyrics.
Enter Greed. Stage right. Creativity, exit stage left.
"THE Rich Girl?" No, just "Rich Girl." "The Hall & Oates?" No, just "Daryl Hall and John Oates." And they were never really named "Hall & Oates."
STOP THIS :::::THIS IS PRIVATE SITUATION !!!!!!
He wasn’t the business manager. In addition, he lost a great deal of his money.
Clearly a hit job against John Oats...
Who will haul oats now ???
Take the money and run guys!!
Sounds like both of them needed to get over themselves and appreciate what they have or had
Hall's solo work was awesome! I miss Hall and Oates cereal. Anyone remember that?
I didn't like his solo work as much as their group work
John Oates is simply a malcontent.
@@tommeredith7462 How do you know about John’s financial situation? He was trying to sell his half not Daryl’s….
@ He’s filed Bankruptcy in the past, sold off his airplane and toy’s.
He tried to sell Daryl’s share that’s why he was successful in filing injunction.
Google it for yourself
@@johncruz9357 Oates publicly said that he squandered most of his money.
Daryl's solo music sounds just like Daryl Hall and John Oates, without Oates. John's music is completely different.
Keep your struggles and problems to yourself. You don't have to answer to ANYBODY.
Remember hearing about these guy's in 74...and wondered why a band would call themselves "Hauling Oats"... lol 😆
Like the music of them. But nothing ist forever...
Daryl!!!!!!! What goes on ???????
I wonder what would have happened if Daryl Hall would have become lead vocalist of Van Halen? Eddie Van Halen begged him when David Lee Roth left Van Halen.
Garfunkel & Oates
Geez, they had there era back then and times changed. They just toured the last few years until John wen't after half the catalog causing the real devide. Daryl was not ready to sell what was 3/4 his?
A very biased and one sided point of view with lots of repetition
their dork songs were played non stop around 1982 at the expense of far better artists.
Sometimes it's the wife that can break them up behind the scenes (Remember John and Yoko?) albiet, Yoko was not entirely behind the scenes. Not criticizing her, and I don't know the whole story other than what I read about it and what Paul has said in interviews.
I like their song, "The Rich Girl".
"Rich Girl." No "the."
Oates was playing and singing his rear off and was stone cold sober, hall, on the other hand was drunk or high or both, he was goofin and started rich girl in the wrong key and you could tell Oates was disappointed. I was too. oates was more professional that day. it's almost like hall had stage fright and had to be toasted to play, he does not seem like that on the TH-cam show.
Hall did not sing all that great either I know he is older but at least stay sober long enough to do the show! you are not a damn kid anymore.
Reputation still intact. Narrative is NOT true.
John Oats was always my favorite of the two.
Never have liked blonde hair guys!
Great memories from the 70 & 80’s.✌🏼
...what a lovely crafted encapsulation - most likely NOT REAL...
It's always the same old story
They just can't ride out the fame and money
There is always one that thinks they're an artist
A sneaky one
Then the break up....Hall was an ass
He sure is.
They just got bored and out of touch with each other.
@@JamesBond-ib9tq its called divorce.
It’s kind of amusing and sad that John Oates says that Daryl Hall can now have the solo career he always wanted. The man is 78. I mean, if he hasn’t found satisfaction in the music industry after 50+ years…
John Oates is the nicest guy and didn't deserve the treatment he received from Daryl. So unnecessary and disloyal on Hall's part.
I didn't like halls solo work.change can be bad
Life is too short get along get a life.
Their problem is simple...... Zzzzzzzer0 mutual respect for one another.
Boys..boys..
I was never a fan. Actually, growing up in the 80's, when they would come on the radio I would lunge and turn the station. Terrible.
Baba Booey !
John Oats has a right to sell his part of the partnership ! He’s 76, you can’t take it with you.
I've seen this.
Are you saying that this is John's fault?
Does he know how to drain someone's life force, and cause intense heat, and hurt a person in the process?
Is he into metaphysical?
Nothing lasts forever.. Get over it and move on into the future
I'M GLAD TO SEE THEY WERE BOTH ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THINGS 😢
Yes, they both seemed to have the same voice too. LOL. Classic case of putting words in people's mouths.
That's Baba Booey!
We saw Hall and Oates in San Jose, CA maybe 8 years ago. The band was great, but DARYL SUCKED!
A nutritionist said Oats can make you fat.
That’s why you have to eat Whole Oats.
This is very biased on the side of Daryl !!!! As the years progressed we could ALL see John being pushed into the role of a backup singer. John said so in interviews they had their time and now it's over
Another history lesson.
I just hit do not recommend
Bye
Partnerships are never a good idea unless you make everything clear in the beginning. Who gets credit, ownership, IP rights, management processes.. of course a couple of musical geniuses don’t think of these things and this is what happens.. I wonder how Bacharach & David, Campbell and Webb and John and Taupin survived intact?
Who’s John Oates? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I like their TH-cam channel, Good Mythical Morning. 😏
John Oates ruined is own reputation; he stabbed Daryl Hall in the back by trashing their partnership agreement.
Frankly, I don't give a 💩
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa rich girls whining 😂
Darryl was always the talent, and without him, no one would know who John Oats is!
Keep fooling yourself
Oats is a better guitar player.
@pb12661 Darryl plays guitar pretty good, and the keyboards, and sings amazing, and and is a good songwriter, and I would definitely go see him if he played near me, and you would have to pay me to go see John Oats
Wrong!
They both made a boat load of money together...stop your whining..count your blessings and move on with your lives.
For all the righteous, small brains...It's about money!
Very similar story to Foreigner with Mick Jones.
Except Lou Gramm actually was a huge part of the success. Oates...ehhh. Oates could have been replaced with any other guitar player.
cant stand any of their dorky songs other than darryl halls 1986 song dreamtime. hall was an opportunist who inserted himself into background singing for other better artists ruining their songs
Like two kids. Both made it big time: fame, success, money.... and still fight..... Just shut up and play..Duh
They need 2 kiss and make up 😘
