My mother was head of the china, crystal & silver department at a local store. Hall & Oates were in town for a show, probably in the 80's. Hall came by her department looking for something for someone. Mother had no clue who he was. He explained about his work as she helped him find a gift for......whomever. Anyway, my mother gushed about what a great, polite and nice guy that Daryl Hall was until the day she died. He really impressed her It's nice when someone like him takes the time and makes the effort to be kind to a clerk in a small city! She never forgot you, Daryl.
Otis has built this amazing platform that speaks to the making of music without gossip adding hope and reverence to it's creation through the most quiet of its contributors.
Great interview. I've been bringing my amps to his shop for 20+ years. I know he deals and interacts with many big names in music, but he and crew always treated me (just a living room hero) like I was the "man". He's a great musician and amp builder; most of all, a real class act.
I played at the Agoura in Cleveland a few times with Ronnie Laws, also a few times at the Agoura in Columbus. I was with Jimmy Hall and we opened for Hall and Oates in Atlanta in 1980, stood next to their monitor guy during their show, the guys sang great. Special note, Swingo’s in Cleveland.
👍 how cool , hall and oats were huge here in Australia, still on high rotation ☝️ hear them on supermarket radio even.. absolutely great songs.. live forever.
Fun interview...now it's got me wondering what other great stories Todd could tell about music in Cleveland in the 70's. I spent almost 30 years living near Lake Erie and it made me smile to see 'Heights' represented on your channel. Thanks Otis!
The "Live from Daryls House" video with Robert Fripp is excellent. I was way late to get interested in Hall and Oates they really are worth a deep dive.
I remember seeing Hall and Oates at the Toledo Sports arena for their Bigger than Both of us tour and thinking that their lead guitarist was the coolest ever...something about his very cool horizontal striped shirt...ha..(pre-new wave) I assumed that he was Chris Bond. Later found out it was Todd Sharp. His solo album Who am I? form 1986 is still one of my favorite albums of the 80's. Christine McVie sings with him on a few tunes and his guitar and vocals and Songwriting are absolutely stellar. I just put on the vinyl...a totally great album from start to finish.Great, great songs .He has another solo album available as well....Thanks , Todd, it's great to hear from you and hear your music again!
First time I saw Todd Sharp play was watching the video of Bob Welch’s 1977 Cal Jam 2 performance with Stevie Nicks singing backup. They played “Ebony Eyes” and the guitarist played such a great solo that it made me want to find out who he was. It was a young Todd Sharp. 🙂 Check it out if you’ve never seen it.
I remember seeing Hall & Oates at the Paramount in Portland Oregon I believe it was 1977 or 78 great place for concerts back in the day it's no longer there it's downtown Broadway in Portland I remember after the concert Standing Ovation and they walked out in front us out the building and tons of red roses and they got into a Rolls-Royce, it was a Class Act. 😂another great memory. I wonder Todd if you were at that concert playing with them just curious. thanks again Otis for all these connections with musicians and paths with people, wonderful stories.😊
I had a ton of stuff to do today but got hooked on these amazing and interesting behind-the-scenes stories!!! Thanks! Being Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area we have always had fantastic live music but in the 1960s-1990s we didn't have TH-cam viedeos telling us what goes on behind the scenes. Again - thanks a bunch!
I’m a novice vocalist/ I Love singing the classic Rock.. I do it cause I Love music and listening to the History from fella’s like yourself sir .. Thank you very much ! I’m honoured to hear it !
I met Todd through his brother who farmed blueberries in Arkansas. He was touring with Rod Stewart at that time. I had Todd rebuild a 65 Pro Reverb amp and he brought it to Kansas City for me in Delbert McClinton’s tour bus as he was playing for Delbert then. I considered that as additional MoJo for my amp. Todd is a Cool player
Definitely one of my favorites also!!The live version of that title song recorded in Hershey PA for the “ Livetime” album in ‘76(?) has great guitar work from Caleb Quaye and really rocks out!!!
Hi Otis- much appreciated your old school musician cool! Candid real stories are something that’s great about this platform in these current times. Also, watched the videos you made about your experiences working with Rod Stewart and Christine McVie. My fav are 1st person accounts compared to people who weren’t actually there. Dig your style of relating your recollections without stepping on toes, invading a famous person’s privacy years later, or some kind of social media sensationalist slagging. Unfortunately some players were too medicated at the time to remember what they went through, don’t want to look back for painful reasons, or don’t have the ability to communicate this way. 🎸. As a longtime fan of RNR, there was usually this impenetratable shroud of mystery around bands and talented original musical artists back in the day and I always thought there can be a truthful balance without giving away too much personal information. Thank you!
I've had Todd and his crew work on my amps for over 20 years. Fantastic work! My amps always sound awesome. Love hearing his stories about working with Bob Welch.
Just tried out Todd’s JOAT 20RT one of my buddies just bought. Unbelievably great sounds in that thing. Rare that you find someone THAT great in both musician and electronically technical realms. What a dude.
Said another way... luck is the ability to capitalize on opportunity. Another top sideman (friend of mine) had an opportunity to audition for a Very hot act, but Very short notice. He learned the new album in about 30 hours. Went into a Cattle Call situation and yeah, the other players were good, but he knew the tunes. Case Closed. Great interview. This is what a Real Musician looks and talks like.
I remember the review in the Melody Maker , and Peter Bardens from Camel said something like , Todd was the best guitar player he had heard for a long time . Ten years later I found Who Am I ? He's one of my favourites.
some sunday i would like to sit in a coffee shop with otis and just read the papers. no talking. just basking in his eclectic, erudite, beardy loveliness. you make things better mister.
Didn’t Rick from goose set in with H&O when they was at that Indy music festival? Trampled by Turtles was there to, didn’t know about it till I pulled up at work
Aww I miss Chris.. Y'all aware the he also recorded Jeff Beck 'Wired"? According to Chris George Martin had to leave so Chris and Jeff rerecorded the final take.
I saw a video the other day, but I haven't fact checked it, however, it said they're not called Hall and Oates. They were never called Hall and Oates. The band has always went by their full names, whatever that is. John and something. I should Google it but Google banned me.
Yet another band whose memory is stained by finding out that behind the great music they made that was the soundtrack of our youth, they hated each other.
Leland Sklar has said some lovely things about working with Chris, and he’s spoken about reconnecting with Chris years later, on his own channel. Condolences for the loss of your friend.
I always thought John Oates was a glorified backup singer, whose voice and guitar playing just weren’t good enough to be lead. His solo work never changed my mind, either. Daryl, however, had a voice you don’t come across very often and his solo compositions are unparalleled - truly soul stirring.

Great comment! Absafreakinglutely true!
Nice to see a fellow Clevelander interviewed on your channel. Thanks for another great post, Otis.

I was playng in punk bands at the time...they were my guilty pleasure. Such craftsmanship!
They were not huge in Australia. They only had two top 10 hits there: #4 Maneater #6 Rich Girl
Met DH while an intern at a radio station in Boston. Veryyyyyy professional. Solid dude.

actually, Chris McVie sings backup vocals throughout the album.
Who Am I is one of my favourite records. The song I'm The One is also on Christine McVie's album , isn't it ? What an amazing guitar player.

I saw them in 1979 at a the Euphoria Tavern in Portland, the tickets were only $7.50 back then.

Great to hear his respect for the act. I hope to hear Todd's playing some time.
Great story. I photographed them backing 1988 in NYC.
another great one, Otis! Todd builds great amps.
Nice to hear some GOOD VIBE recollections of duo...
I saw Todd Sharp play with Hall & Oates back in the 1970s when the Universal Amphitheater was open air. He really made an impression!
I believe Todd Sharp played lead on Christine McVie's 'Love Will Show Us How.'
Powerful stuff. Mighty fine pickin'! 😉

Love that album, I,ve played that album more than any of my other albums. It still sounds good today.

Where can I find the repair shop? I have a 74 Princeton that needs service and live in Arkansas.
@ It’s outside of Nashville
Another winning interview Otis! Todd's name is new to me but he made a good impression with a great story.
Thank you Todd & Otis
Great stories and insight. When I saw Hall & Oates, G E Smith was their guitarist.
what a wonderful video. Thank you. That made my evening.
LOVE this !
Just tried out Todd’s JOAT 20RT one of my buddies just bought. Unbelievably great sounds in that thing. Rare that you find someone THAT great in both musician and electronically technical realms. What a dude.
Quite enjoyed this!
I am so in love with his stories
Start sowing seed in the morning. Continue till the evening. You never know what will grow. Cool!
NME, Melody Maker and Sounds were my music rags back then, real printed newspapers they were, no mags back then.
God I feel old, lol.

Cleveland rocks!!
I remember the review in the Melody Maker , and Peter Bardens from Camel said something like , Todd was the best guitar player he had heard for a long time . Ten years later I found Who Am I ? He's one of my favourites.
Great story.
I worked with John on the Marigold Sky album.
Wow. In what capacity did you work with John? That album always seemed to me to be more of a Daryl production with John just appearing occassionally.
I set up songwriting sessions for John.@@jonsimon5779

I used to work hauling oats too.
Cool!❤
Haulin' oats!
Great story!
Cleveland makes some of the best guitar players, no doubt. Something about those long, cold lake effect winters does something to a kid.
I wonder if he has any stories about the Michael Stanley Band.
Ever hear of Rick Iantosca. ? I believe he co wrote a song with Hall and Oates and produced them at one point.
Didn’t Rick from goose set in with H&O when they was at that Indy music festival? Trampled by Turtles was there to, didn’t know about it till I pulled up at work
Nice
Hi Otis
I don't care for HALL & OATES, but Otis has a great show
Aww I miss Chris.. Y'all aware the he also recorded Jeff Beck 'Wired"? According to Chris George Martin had to leave so Chris and Jeff rerecorded the final take.
todd played with christine mcvie
There is a better chance at a Beatles reunion, than a Hall & Oates reunion. A damn shame.
I wonder if Otis knows Rick Richards Dan Bairds buddy?
I still have no idea which is Hall and which is Oates.
Oates has dark hair and had a mustache.
As one is 6’1” and blond (Daryl Hall) and the other is barely 5’5” and dark (John Oates), it really isn’t hard to tell them apart.
I saw a video the other day, but I haven't fact checked it, however, it said they're not called Hall and Oates. They were never called Hall and Oates. The band has always went by their full names, whatever that is. John and something.
I should Google it but Google banned me.
It is hilarious that this is somehow a VERY BIG THING to both of them.
Yet another band whose memory is stained by finding out that behind the great music they made that was the soundtrack of our youth, they hated each other.
@@BayouDiddy Daryl Hall & John Oates
EVERYBODY knows them as Hall and Oates.
@@nunnayabiz7911
Indeed.
pretty shocking to hear daryl hall the man himself go onto NPR and say "Hall and Oates was always just me"
Not Surprised.. My now deceased friend Chris Bond didn't have much good to say about Darryl .. Said he always liked Jon
Leland Sklar has said some lovely things about working with Chris, and he’s spoken about reconnecting with Chris years later, on his own channel. Condolences for the loss of your friend.
@@chrisandersen5635 Thank You Chris. Yes When Leland came to Seattle they did meet. Chris was very happy that they got to hang out.

That's unfortunate to hear because John wrote the choruses to their biggest hits; "She's Gone", "Maneater" and "Out of Touch".
Detroit is rock city.
