'Xi Jinping Is Risking Everything For Success In Ladakh'

  • China's President Xi Jinping appears driven by some messianic zeal about his country's "rejuvenation", a goal which he outlined six years ago and which appears to have lost ground in eastern Ladakh. But don't expect him to throw in the towel, warns Jayadeva Ranade, former spook and head of the Centre for China Analysis & Strategy. In an exclusive chat with StratNews Global, Ranade believes Xi will try and force a conclusion on his terms in Ladakh, and India will have to wait and watch for it, and if possible, nip it in the bud.
There may have been a degree of overconfidence in the Chinese move on India, he says, and it speaks poorly of their planning and their understanding of India, that they came off worse during clashes in the Galwan Valley three months ago. Again, they failed to anticipate the Indian move to secure key heights, and Xi Jinping has lost face. This is not to say his position is in danger, he has purged many rivals to secure his job but he needs to show success to the Commnist Party. This is where he has failed so far.
Ranade suspects the PLA will make its move before long, perhaps after the current talks get over in Moscow. He's taking a risk. If the PLA is defeated, the party elders may tell the president to lie low until his current (and second) term ends in 2023. It will spell finish to his dream of a third term (given that term limits were abolished for him) and he will be considerably weakened, and could possibly see many of his policies reversed.

One of the aspects that sort of forced the hand of China, is India’s declaration that PoK, Gilgit and Baltistan is part of India. That puts the $60B CPEC at risk alongside rendering Gwadar pretty useless without CPEC. Abolishing article 370 was a masterstroke on the part of Modi. Losing Tibet and East Turkistan is a reality that China is staring at. It cannot afford to send all its troops westward and risk an all out democratic revolution on mainland China. Lose-lose all the way for China!

The Indian military has a proud history of disciplined, innovative specialisation. This is not the case with the PLA. India must be sure not to be over confident, but plan, reinforce, prepare and gently and gradually reinforce.
The entire rest of the world is waiting for India to oppose and curtail China's outward bound ventures. These ventures will bring, organ harvesting of innocents, suppression of freedoms, religions and liberties, and the very skillful use of propaganda to sway populations towards socialism.
Socialism is the baby steps towards communism, which is full blown, hammer and anvil totalitarian oppression, from which extraction is difficult.
India must use the QUAD, and strengthen relations with the US, to bolster defenses and bolster techniques to oppose the greatest threat to peace and harmony and liberty, the Communist Party of China.

If asked for inputs they might have certainly pampered the Chinese into believing that they are invincible. Doubt very much whether the soda-cap medal adorned Pakistani generals have the courage, or the standing, to advise the Chinese. Theirs is a typical Master-serf relationship, in which Pakistanis feel grateful, if their ingratiating ways are rewarded with a look in their direction!

@john doe 370 is the fig leaf China's using to justify it's territorial grabs. South China sea, Mongolia, Vladivostok etc have nothing to do with 370 and everything to do with its territorial ambitions. That Xi thinks that territory is of so much importance also indicates the primitive thought process he (& his advisors probably) possesses.
Re Pak - Pure revenge play. It knows fully well that it has less than 0 chance of hurting India + with the dog's breakfast it has made of its own economy, it's only hope is to now aligning it's cause (hurt India+economic repair) with that of China - hoping for an orgasm w/o any physical effort.

you see China will be far more emboldened than they ever were if India blinks, and India will see Chinese troops crossing its border in Mass, knowing they flinched in military conflict.
And as you can see the entire world is trying to get India to flinch, oh yes including the Saudi King, who is on China's side, notwithstanding Putin, Trump, Pelosi, Iran's regime, and above them NittenYakhoo.

Is it clear what is the targeted outcome for China?

  • @ravinderpalsingh4225

Jayadev Ranade has good insight of ways of CCP and Xi Jinping. Xi was the planner of the policy of coercive turbulence on Indian border and tested it in Eastern Ladakh in April 2020. Chinese successfully misled Indian security planners by using Russians to inform Indians in March, that PLA was only conducting a Spring exercise, and they will return.
The CMC under Xi, now plans to have heavy forward deployment on its border with India for permanent capacities for intrusion, which could be converted into conflicts of opportunity. Xi closely monitored the military talks through his interpreters, instead of feedback from PLA chain of command.
Ranade is right that PLA and
Xi Jinping would look to create opportunities to militarily humiliate India to save their face in the CCP and other Asian states. To that extent, sending four ships to exercise in SCS is an avoidable provocation.
Ranade is wrong in assuming that Wang Yi is member of Politburo. China's senior foreign policy official in Politburo is Yang Jiechi and not their foreign minister Wang Yi, who is member of State Council. To that extent, Minister Jaishankar's equivalent should be Yang Jeichi.

Gordon Chang has just endorsed the views expressed by Jayadev Ranade by calling it a high risk gamble" by XI JINPING staking his political future on the aggressive border movement against India to showcase domestic audience the greatness of China ..the fact that XI has not succeeded in pushing back the Indian army will make him more determined to launch a more determined offensive against India..Chang goes on to say that the world is watching and drawing conclusions that the Chinese are not invincible after all as they profess to be and the PlA has serious defects as a fighting force.. Xi Jingping is aware of this perception gaining ground around the world specially is south east Asia with countries who share hostile borders with china.. everyday that ends in a stalemate for Xi and China proves that the chinese are not invincible and other smaller countries will find courage to stand upto the dragon..that's why Xi must fight a war with India to overcome doubts about the efficacy of his army

If you ask the Chinese government why they have become so aggressive with India, they will probably say that while they have historical border issues with India, it is Indian action in August 2019 to make Ladakh a union territory that had prompted this action. China had announced its unhappiness in Oct 2019 which (right or wrong) it sad it sees as unacceptable expansionism. It is surprising that Indian media hardly mentions this Ladakh Union territory as a major contributory factor for the current war atmosphere between the 2 countries.

I feel that the opposition parties in India should firmly stand behind the government in standing up against the aggressor China and also eventually take back our territories like Aksai chin occupied by China since 1962.
