'India-China Joint Statement a Positive Development but Doubts Remain on China's Future Actions'

  • In an interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire Nirupama Rao made a point of drawing attention to some of the language in the Chinese readout of the Foreign Ministers’ meeting. She said the phrase “China’s stern position” and another phrase “the imperative is to immediately stop provocations such as firing” are clearly a sign that China’s attitude and outlook is conditioned by an attempt to define who is in the right or wrong. She said these are discordant words and clearly suggest that when China subsequently talks of moving back personnel and equipment that have trespassed as well as quickly disengaging troops and de-escalating the situation, it has India in mind rather than itself.
However, Mrs. Rao accepted that it was “certainly noteworthy that the Chinese readout has not apportioned blame” specifically or outspokenly. This is strikingly different to what the Chinese Defence Minister said last week.

First Amit sah unnecessarily opening mouth, Aksai chin Hamara hai , then Mr modi declaring chinese has not captured our land , totally surrendering to china. He thinks whole India is his father land. Unnecessarily stopped annual Army exercise in Ladakh ,declaring lock down and neither corona stopped nor chinese .Thanks to our BRVAVE soldeirs ,who were able to capture max of our land. Jai Hind.

I think Mrs Rao was very forthright and critical in her first interview with Mr. Thapar. In the subsequent interviews no. 2 & 3, she has mellowed down and all her experience and diplomatic acumen was evident in her responses.

Further to my earlier comments, I may add that Chinese has demonstrated their usually strategic mind set by referring to LAC as Border areas in the joint declaration by effectively invoking the 1959 border line between the two countries as defined by then Chinese PM in his letter to PM Nehru . Since there is no mention of withdrawal of Chinese troops to May 2020 positions in the joint declaration, India has virtually legitimized the capturre of their 1000 sq KM area by Chinese. No wonder intellectual looking Indian FM , over exicited Defence minister & military leadership are shy to face the press. Perhaps no Indian would have ever imagined that 70 years after the independence they would be ruled by such a bunch of coward & naive leaders led by " brave" Modi

So long as the LAC is not defined, how can one say that China has intruded or India had intruded? It is clear to all literate persons in India and certainly to so called journalists like Karan that the India - China LAC is not clearly demarcated since 1962 so the first and foremost thing is to have a clearly demarcated LAC. There is no point in discussing the current situation unless one discusses the reasons leading to this situation. People like Nirupama Rao and many others who were at the helm of the affairs must be asked as to why the LAC remained unclear for so long.
This interview by Karan has no meaning at all and no purpose at all except display of few good English phrases. This is what Karan always tries to do rather than raising fundamental issues and have an informed discussions.

Other than omitting reference to LAC and replacing it with " the borders" that has to be analysed & decided by Indian analysts the rest of the agreement is very loose particularly as there is no timeline or next steps to make it look like a firm agreement. Also, there is no suggestion that China will do anything with respect to restoring the status quo. On top of this it is being said that China has rejected India making Ladakh a union territory. It is also suggested by Indian media that India has sad that it would like to progress its relationship with China on economic matters. What is badly needed is for Indian policy makers to speak to all these points. At this time it looks like this Moscow meeting has been a "win for China" as it has succeeded in telling India that it is the "big boss" in the region and it has to accept this reality

As the saying goes, ‘You get what you deserve’. The people of India have chosen the Hindutva ideology and moved away from Secularism. Majoritarianism is not possible when you have 25% of a population of 1.2 billion which is minority. This means there will constant internal turmoil for decades ahead as the BJP has enough money ( by forcing demonetisation ), to out spend any opposition for at least 2 to 3 more general elections. So get ready for more ideological rhetorics, low growth rates and loads of jumlabazi.

A good analysis of the situation, particularly the pertinent questions by karan and brave effort by the former FS to generously explain positives of the joint declaration by the both countries. However I am surprised that Karan did not raise the highly important reference of LAC to Border Areas in the declaration, indirectly conceeding the 1000 sq KM area captured by Chinese since May 2020 as reported by many Indian newspapers but not denied by the Indian government & Army. Consequently Indian people are justified to ask their 56 inches chest PM and phony Defence Minister as to the reason of surrendering this huge territory to China without even firing a single bullet except some shots fired in the air which too Modi government was scared to own. This is an insult to 1.2 Billion Indian people and the darkest period in the history of modern India. Hope Karan takes out some time to address my views.

I feel China is not intrested in territorial gains any more. It has got already what it wants from that side. However, since they know that in India there are high sentiments and hypernationalism. India's actions will be more driven by sentiments than rationality. So China wants to punish by inflicting huge loss financially by opening multiple fronts. Stationing troops on heights costing us Per day around 250-300cr. Engaging us this way for around more few months will cause a huge dent to already struggling economy and finally india will come down to chinese terms for disengagement.
