This Milwaukee Road scene brings back memories! I use to be a brakeman and then later a locomotive engineer, on occasion (mostly worked yard service, now retired), over this line when it was the Soo Line. An underpowered train always risked stalling out around here and having to double the train at "red barn" siding (held around 20 cars) further up the hill. Once in 1996 I had a new Canadian Pacific GE AC 4400 followed by an older SD40 in my consist heading over these same tracks. I warned the dispatcher by radio our train was over tonnage for the climb east. He responded "well, we'll have to do the best we can." Darned if that new GE and EMD just walked that train up this hill never dropping below 15 mph! Thanks for sharing!
Love the sound of those 16-645 prime movers down on their knees bringing that tonnage up out of the Mississippi River valley, you noted this was taken at Preston Rd, didn't the Milwaukee cross over that road on a wooden viaduct?
The 1980s after the reorganization were especially fun times for the Milwaukee Road just before it was bought up by the Soo Line. The MILW kept its second main track in places especially within Savanna and east until a point just west of Mount Carroll, and around Adeline, Davis Junction and between Genoa and New Lebanon. It sure was busier for the Milwaukee Road than in today's era with Canadian Pacific running the show with its up to 12 trains daily and more during the fall shipping rush.
Scooby Carr actually the 80s were much worse for the Milwaukee Road because of the abandonment of the Pacific Extension, pint sized profits and rotting tracks. Also, the Milwaukee was in severe excruciating pain when it filed for bankruptcy in December of 1977.
So sad!the US government stood by and did nothing to help the rock island, and the Milwaukee railroads. As a result, we lost two trans continental railroads. I still remember when both the Carter and the Reagan administration's should have stepped in and help the employee save these two railroad s. I am so very disappointed with the US government, that EVERYTIME is look at those railroads, it brings back sad memories of what could have been!yes, they are gone, but not forgotten!
I'm pretty sure it was some version of a Leslie S3 with one bell not working. Horn maintenance was pretty far down on the priority list toward the end for the Milwaukee Road.
Still cabooses and telegraph poles on that day. Given the sorry state of their serviceable locomotive fleet I wonder if Milwaukee's EMDs held some kind of record for most hours in notch 8.
What is the horn that was used on MILW SD40's? Id like to make sure my Milwaukee Road content that I create for the game Trainz has realistic whistles.
Whoever made this video, you did a good job making it, but you did a poor job with the sound ,and you failed to say how many freight cars he had. Why didn't you at least count the cars and put it in the video?
You kept on changing the blasted videos much, that I couldn't even count the number of freight cars he had! If you are going to make these videos, you could at least show the whole train! I give this video an f! You cannot sell a video when you are constantly changing the frames!
Excellent Video! Man how I miss the Milwaukee Road 😫
Man how I loves the Sound of them SD 40’s!!!
This is how I remember all trains sounding until about 2002.
I love those old classic horns you don't hear them anymore

I miss the Milwaukee - memories of orange and black SD40-2's on the northern mainline in S. Dakota
Loved the airslide U.P.hopper with silver trucks at 2:50.
That 2 stroke bike sound after the train clears the crossing is also nice. Great vid.
It takes me back when I was a kid camping in Dresbach MN a lot of trains thank you 😊
part of this historic time period
Two EMDs working their guts out on their final years of service on the MILW.
I can feel the sand and dust blowing towards me as it rolls by. And i smell slight "baked" traction motors too.

I miss it.
-What a diverse load, International Harvesters, InterModal, boxcars, maybe some coal....wow
Great video!
This is actually Wacker Rd. Preston Rd. goes under the tracks a little farther east.
Awesome I love the old videos!

Studly. I have many fond memories of a couple carriers later watching ICE try and slug it out up the hill. Brings back a couple memories. Sweet!
Good video quality 4 the age awesome!
Does anybody know how many freight cars they had! Please reply!
i miss milwaukee sd40's roaring thru danville,il on leased trackage rights from conrail.

Dave Hudson actually it’s an RS3L
@@jazzbutterworth More likely a Prime PM920 - RS3L soundalike that Milwaukee Road used a lot of.

Wish I could've seen some in real life. Just means I have to model them instead.
30 years ago. I didn't see any graffiti none.
Those where the good years of Railfanning.
Washed off. LOL
@Joe Madej in so many ways...

Was it heading to Sabula, Iowa or to Kansas City, Mo?
Chicago.

I think it sounds pretty good factoring in the video camera technology for the time (early 1980s) of this recording.
