Enya started in Clannad. Its her familys band comprising of her sister, two brothers and uncles.
One of my all time fav songs...full volume uninterrupted. The music and backing vocals are so surreal and one of Bono's best performances vocally in my humble opinion.

I loved this song when it was released in 1985. I was huge into U2 and even got to meet Bono twice that year. The years went by and the song sort of faded from my memory. In 2015 I was in a small lounge in Heathrow Airport, having breakfast before getting on my flight from London back to Boston. There was music playing in the background. In A Lifetime started playing and I got major goosebumps because I hadn't heard the song for so long, and because it sounded so good on the speakers in that lounge. And now it is good to hear it again on your channel. On a different note, you should check out U2 with opera legend Pavarotti on their song "Miss Sarajevo". The vocals are amazing.
Robin the hooded Man was my introduction of Clannad for me. They did the Soundtrack for that Show in the mid 80's.

same for me. I saw the series in Germany TV and was flashed about the music. I ran in several records shops, but it was not easy to get the venyl (lon before CD). I was so proud when I got the record. I´m a fan since then.
The song "In a Lifetime" from Clannad is great and still timeless. The voice of Máire Ní Bhraonáin (Moya Brennan) and the one of Bono are amazing.
This is a pure Irish jewel.
In this song, we can hear Moya playing celtic harp.
Bono was only given the lyric at the recording of this. After a couple of run throughs they recorded his vocal. It was mainly ad libbed and done in one take. Maire Brennan, the female vocalist (and harp player), said it was the most extraordinary thing she’d ever seen.

More exactly: the eldest of four more sisters (and four brothers)
The thing that broke U2 in the States was their tour in support for _War_ in 1983. In that tour they played a song called "Harry's Theme" by a group called Clannad before they took the stage. Their _Live at Red Rocks_ video, which MTV played incessantly, started with that song. So U2 had a lot to do with introducing Clannad to the masses in the US. I'd say that Enya's success was also related to this. Enya, younger sister of Máire, the singer here, was briefly part of the band.

Bono has worked with so many artists over the decades, from playing harmonica on Royal Station 4/16 by Melissa Etheridge, to being guest vocals on What's Happened To You by The Call, or a duet with Gavin Friday on In The Name Of The Father.

Bono’s voice was peak between 1985 (live aid) and 1989 (love town tour I think) I would say. His voice was still good in the early 90s but he didn’t use it in the same way.
Everytime I hear this beautiful song I get a bit downy but want to visit Eire again at the same time. Others want to do the dishes 😊 That’s the magic of grand music.

Another really haunting song from Clannad is 'Newgrange'. It was released as a single from their album 'Magical Ring'.
Brilliant song, too good for the charts. As a Central European, I got to know Clannad because the song announced the U2 War Tour concerts in 1983, also heard at the awesome Red Rocks concert 1983/DVD.

The intro / first half minute of the song derives from the beginning of another Clannad song named 'Caislean Oir' (Gaelic for 'Golden Castle'); on the vinyl or disc rendition of 'In a Lifetime' it´s not in! For some reason it was incorporated in this song here

Clannad is pronounced similar to clanid, with a short A. It translates loosely as family singers - hence the clan part of their name. The "choir" is simply the harmonization of the band members, which was threir trademark sound.. The guitar you mentioned in the beginning is Moira (pronounced Moya) playing the Irish harp. This song is pretty typical of their later sound. Their first four albums were mostly modernized versions of traditional Irish songs and tunes - modernized but faithful to tradition.

The very first part is a different song. You can pretty much tell the split to In a Lifetime. Enya is their sister/niece.
