I'm 77 and will soon be dead from prostate cancer. Jordan Peterson and other truth seekers give me some hope that Western/World civilization can be saved from the anti-rational and anti-evidence based ideology/religion of the radical Left.

I find writing also helpful. However, my thoughts are sometimes faster than me writing them down, which annoys me. Do you think typing thoughts on a laptop or phone is a good alternative?

I wouldn’t start with watching high density philosophy videos on 2x speed. You have to work your way up to that just like speed reading. Try watching silly, low density videos first.

Who doesn't know who he is, doesn't need that click bait for sure and not good associate him with this, he criticises ideas not attacking people. I avoid sharing those wrongly titled which is a shame as he always has great things to say.

So a leader of a country doesn't need to be responsible for his actions. He seems to forget or he doesn't know much of the history. He doesn't know about the manipulations he did to the German mob. How he used the mob to get into power. This is interesting concerning social media, news and the entertainment business. How they form our knowledge and opinions. There are so many new opinions on social media that fundamentally destroy the moral of the people, especially the young. Before I was introduced to JBP by my 30 year old youngest son, I was in hell! That was two years ago. I got the future authoring program at 57 years old!
I cleaned up my room! I got rid of all of the things that I knew were doing me harm in my life. A toxic relationship, alcohol, opioids and people who certainly did not want me to get well! I owe my future outlook on life to Jordan B Peterson.

iamplay The simple point is that your room represents your broader way of handling the world. If you have a dirty room, and you’re given control of a system even more complex it’s more likely than not you’ll “dirty” that system up too.
So look at it two ways, it’s a place to start so you can better handle complex systems by being organized; or just take it as a metaphor. BUT you’d better be laser sharp about following that metaphor, or else you become a hypocrite.
I think statistically, if you can keep your room clean, you can manage more complex systems. Not a rule, but more statistically probable.
Watched hundreds of his videos over the last 3 years, and just as I think I've heard everything he has to say, he still surprises me with more insight in every new video.

This video seems to explain everything that happened with his origin story in 2016/2017. For those out of the loop, this just sums it up and touches every detail. Its neat hearing about the native American tribe story, for example, cause I'd heard it before in an old video. This whole video is a call back to his earlier stuff and it feels so refreshing.
That's because he never has a pre-planned speech or prepared outline of what he's going to say specifically. Instead, he takes us, the audience, on a genuine journey with him through his mind as he genuinely applies his rational thinking to the world implicit and explicit such that we are able to step into his mind, as it were, for a moment, as we learn expand and grow together because of it.

@William Kiene Because eternal damnation, or any other form of divine consequence isn't the only consequence of disregarding morals. The way that you treat other people, as well as the way that you act when nobody is looking, not only has a drastic effect on the outcomes in your life, but trickles out into people you care about, and then to ones you don't even know. It matters... both in your life and beyond. The consequences of disregarding morality catch up fast. Many would call that karma. It doesn't take an eternity or even a lifetime. Sometimes bad moral choices catch up to you almost immediately. Something we all learn and forget thousands of times throughout our lives. That is why matters of right and wrong remain relevant for the entirety of a human life, regardless of how beliefs may change.
Religion is one way to get that idea across, and a good one, I think. But it's not the sole way in which morality manifests and is relevant to both individuals and society as a whole. Your morality is a piece of you - a person isn't easily separated from looking at things in terms of 'right' and 'wrong' regardless of whether they adhere to any sort of religious doctrine. We are wired to look at the world and our choices in this way - a trait closely tied to our capacity for empathy and our desire for progress. So long as there is suffering in this life, people will always need to be making moral distinctions in order to better navigate and hopefully integrate that suffering into a bigger whole. Because otherwise this existence is bleak. Our desire for meaning is born from that, and we develop morals as a way of attaining a higher purpose. Some may take their pages from a religious doctrine (which I support for those who wish to do that.) But I think the desire to establish morals and the meaning that brings into our lives starts within us and branches out, rather than being imposed upon us. Your experiences simply show you what is good and bad about you, the people around you, and the world we all live in. Ultimately, you are still making those calls. Just as some choose to follow religious doctrine, others choose to follow whatever guides them towards what they see as being a better person. These things are merely tools that we use to shape our morality. Again, it's born from within us.
Postulating that nobody has any reason to pursue morals in absence of religion is like saying, "Well since we don't have hammers anymore, why does anyone care about building houses?" Just because you don't have hammers doesn't mean people don't need shelters to protect them from the uncaring, unflinching harshness of the world. The hammer and the act of building a house for yourself, or the need for such a thing are not one and the same. Religion and morals are not the same thing.
The natural tendency towards operating under moral assumptions is what makes us all people. It's a core part of our decision-making process. We care about who we are and how our lives turn out, and thus we adopt morals that best suit the outcomes that we have decided are best for ourselves, and hopefully others, though not always...

I do not agree with the statement that automation inherently reflects the morality of its creators. Most automation, as referred to, is driven by AI algorithms and deep learning. These algorithms are trained by historical data and on themselves aren't morally biased. It's the training data, aka the corpus of human behaviour in the past. This corpus of historical data of human beings is the issue, not the automation on itself, nor the morality or ideology of the creators of the platform or the algorithms.
As a practical example, take the use case of an AI driven job matching algorithm, which discriminates on gender or race. The issue is the human historical behavior of discrimination in this field, not the automation in itself.

19:59 ... one of the things I learned from Jung, which really has never ceased to shock me, was his - see he basically made a point, and the point was that you’re not master in your own house, that there are forces that are operating on you at an unconscious level that determine, for example, the direction of your attention.
So, for example - you know how sometimes you’ll read something and it’ll really grip you. And then you’ll read something else and like, you can’t even concentrate on it. And you might say, “well I need to concentrate on this boring thing.” You know, because an exam depends on it or a promotion and there’s just no damn way. You’re reading it and your attention flicks all over the place. And you know, you’re undisciplined and all that. But then you have this other thing and it just grips you like this. And you think, “Ok, well what’s doing that?”
It’s not your will because your will would be the thing that would allow you to concentrate on whatever you chose to concentrate on. It’s something underneath your will that’s actually directing your attention. And you could say, “well it’s random” but of course it’s not. It’s maybe random if you have a serious case of schizophrenia. And I think in some sense that’s actually the definition of schizophrenia but it’s not random if you’re a functioning human being. The thing that grips your attention and directs it to one place or another is something that’s, well it’s a deep instinct, it’s a manifestation of what Jung called the self, which is a very interesting idea. So, Yung thought - it’s such a cool idea - he thought that the mechanism that directed your attention in the present was your future self attempting to manifest itself in the present world.
So you might say, well, you have a potential and that potential is what you could be in time. And in order for that potential to manifest itself it has to be palpable in the present. And the way that instinct for further development manifests in the present is by directing your attention towards things that are likely to increase your competence and further your growth right now.
And that’s just an unbelievable idea. You know, it’s like your potential better self beaconing to you in the present. 😮

This is such a foolish and shortsighted notion of Jung's. There is nothing more random and transient than one's future self (without a superstitious belief in fatalism). These unseen drivers of the self are a manifestation of the karmic influences of the self's experiences in past lives.

This is absolutely fantastic. Two years old now, his book was just coming out; he had no idea what was coming... This is a great self-explanation of the roots of how this all came to be.
I thought the same thing! This is such a good summary of everything that brought him here. There were a lot of details I had missed cause I didnt find out about him til February of 2018, and this video just is perfect. Perfect fill-in. They could make a movie out of this.

@Bruce Gilder That's a good question. I think the key point is, the future self isn't the only actor in the room, so to speak. You've got your old habits (neural-pathways), what you think other people want you to be, etc. I don't know if you've had this experience, but for example have you ever walked past the kitchen full of dirty dishes, become aware of it, thought "Jesus christ that needs to be cleaned" then thought "I can't deal with that right now, I have X, Y, Z..." The way I see it, that's the future self calling attention to a better self that cleans the kitchen, and then "other actors" swooping in and stealing you away.

I'm currently listening to this while doing my homework for school and my French certificate exams in May, so that I can get into the university of my choice (translation/interpretetion and tourism). As a teenager, I find Dr. Peterson's advice very helpful, as he's an extraordinary person that has taught me a lot. I believe his words truly improve my life and help me make better choices. I really hope that my mum will agree to buy me his book as a present for Christmas, since I can't afford it right now.

It satisfies like food to hear Jordan Peterson speaking. Makes my day. Last night I shared him with someone who had no idea who he is. I told this guy that everytime I listen to Mr. Peterson, I feel smarter. Theres a mental balance that happens.

I only use fb as a sort of bulletin board of good articles I've read, a few other things. I just don't like the way fb throws its weight around, banning people whose politics they don't like. I put almost everyone on non-notification. I keep waiting to get banned myself, for my politics, but since I only a few people visit my page, I guess they think my circle of influence is to small to worry about.
I kicked FB and Twitter to the curb 6 months ago. Much happier now.

Well I took your (JP) personality test and scored low in a lot including Conscientiousness but I managed to watch this from beginning to end. One can only hope now my faults are laid bare I can change them. Great lecture JP and keep them coming. :-)

Keep in mind that "low" score doesn't mean bad. 5 Big Personality Traits is a set of 5 spectrums. I do understand that you would like to be high in Conscientiousness (I have the same problem :) but you (we) need to look at it as just a set of 5 traits, not "I'm weak in this department". The most obvious example I can give is an Extrovertism-Introvertism trait. I'm not "low on extrovertism", but "high on introvertism", just on the other side of the scale.
Also, it's rarely enough to know what are your results to change particular trait, it's very useful to know the most efficient way to do it. I recommend searching terms like "Peterson how to increase Conscientiousness", he answered those questions quite a few times in his Q&A videos.

@@kalash_nikov I take your point. However, I disagree with the scores on half of them so I answered them wrong or I really don't know myself very well. That said, thanks to JP I'm making changes and taking responsibility for the small stuff is working. I took voluntary redundancy from a factory job and am now pursuing a career as a driving instructor. In the meantime (it can take up to 2 years or so to qualify) I was accepted for the first 2 jobs I applied for. I wish I'd had this mindset 30 years ago when I left the Army. Instead I just settled for easy. I'll follow up on that search term you recommend, thanks. I seem to struggle pursuing long tasks /projects . Used to seeking quick rewards I guess.
@@ClassicMist360 Thanks man. I really do feel like the mist has cleared and the future looks good. It took 55 years to happen but hey ho no point in dwelling on what you didn't do in the past and keep on top of that in tray! I think my 'pending' tray was what JP would call a dragon. I think it's easy to let this incredibly complex life bury us in distractions. We need to focus on the things that move us forward/up and let go the trivia that leads to nowhere. If your problems become dragons, what then do solutions grow into? I guess it doesn't matter it's all about the journey..
thank you Jordan, I have seen this before but on reevaluation and someone who is going on to study counseling psychology I would like to touch upon the advert topic you discussed. my statement is that the best thing i ever did on youtube is download an add blocker. I think this because when I see an advert my mind goes into fuck sake advert mode. When this happens the only part of me which absorbs content is the unconscious. When said video resumes from advert I feel somewhat blocked mentally, thus I am distilled by what I know to be rubbish and wrong. Adds are obviously developed and manipulated to affect our unconscious in a way to cause emotional interest in said subject. This is clear I had an ex who was director for a top worldwide advert company. the new manipulation is not sex sells but emotions sell. the affect of human desire. I conclude by stating that one should download an add blocker, keep an open mind and recognize that post add content may be numbed out because of Advert.

I was disappointed not to hear him comment on the behaviour modification aspects of social media algorithms or the way personal info is actually used, a little technical for non IT people maybe but it touches specifically into the interests of a Psychologist

I’m a 19 year old college student and I lean towards the left politically. That being said, I wish people my age would think more like this. My generation seems to think in very black& white terms and we are very easily influenced by what we read from people with platforms. The things JBP stands for are not partisan. I wish people wouldn’t associate him with the far right so much. He is a beacon for compromise and using reason to come to a conclusion instead of emotion and clout. Social media is the death of society as far as I can tell.
Jordan Peterson, is such a well reasoned and well spoken genius. The multitude of connections that he mellifluously highlights is nothing short of enlightening. A humble and polite man with a vigilance for truth.

It is TV, or at least it is the natural repercussion of reality TV. But social media is not the illness. It really is what we make of it. As Peterson indicates, it is a revolutionary new medium. We have the ability to communicate anything through TV. We mostly choose drama of varying degrees of truth. That same ability is available with respect to social media. The difference is that TV has been bought up and is increasingly in the control of corporations that want to control the discussion. Right now, social media is the only way to get a word in edgewise .

It's so amazing that he doesnt need PowerPoints or notes to give a talk, it's all those years of studying, all that knowledge acquired. Just astounds me every time I listen to him.

It's awesome that Jung described this idea, too.
African here and a big fan of Peterson's work. I'm so proud of him to finally hear a public acknowledgement that some of the ideas the West was built on may have originated all the way back in Africa. (24:00) My guy is actually capable of connecting all of the dots back to the cradle of humanity... He just tempered my biggest criticism of his work.

Facebook and other social media makes you depressed when it crowds out your true, in-person social life, or when you foolishly think that commenting and liking and messaging is sufficient to consider something a well-maintained relationship with someone.

At first I was slightly agitated by this comment, not cuz I'm a trump supporter or anything, just sick of hearing how trump is the next Hitler, cuz he wasn't. But then I realized it is completely true in the sense that he was the reflection of what the American people wanted, even tho the media denied it, the voters said yes and he became president Then the second time around the media again said no hes got no chance, and yes he lost but got 48 percent of the votes and biden the winner got 49 percent.
