@d15z1sux it comes in sooner. For example the v8 has 450nm from 1200rpm to 3000rpm, The 2.8 has 500nm from 2000rpm to 3500rpm. The v8 has more torque at lower rpm and peak at 450nm for longer range. The 2.8 only has more torque only from 2000rpm on wards. The 2.8 has to rev and be in its power band to beat the v8. Peak number on power and torque is one thing the other is where it's at and how long it last. Diesel normally don't like to rev high so really that v8 will tow all day at 2000rpm all day long. It's in it peak torque at that rev. Like my 200 series, shell seat at 2000rpm towing up hill all day long sometimes 2600rpm n that's going 110km up a hill pulling a boat.

THE THING IS: Bless that 4.5 V8 TD with some tuned ECU software, a 76mm freeflow exhaust, heavy duty clutch and revised 2nd & 5th gear ratios - and that V8 Cruiser becomes a total monster, with 650Nm on the flywheel! (Enough to run alongside some sports cars during a rolling start) And that V8 turbodiesel just sounds soo nice with that exhaust... While a tune 2.8GD6 sounds dull and boring...
Agreed- it’s a shame you have it spend the dough to make it go as it should. Mine easily makes 650nm at the wheels with a towing tune, clutch and exhaust with dpf. If it was a 6 speed auto it would absolutely hammer of the mark😎
You made the absolute most crucial comment. A totally unstressed V8. The v8 will kill the 4 cylinder for life span. Tume the V8 of give the same minimum specs of the 200 or 300 series, then give it a drag race
There is another video and dollar for dollar, mod for mod the 4cyl was still better and outperformed the V8. As for lifespan, the 4cyl has already proven itself in other applications
One point to take away from this is yes, the 4 cylinders are a small motor but engineered to produce more power. The v8 will be just run in by the time those 4 cylinder vehicles are ready for a rebuild. I suppose not many people buy vehicles with the thought of keeping them for long these days.
I am not so sure about that. My six year old Mercedes Sprinter 4 cylinder 2.2l Diesel has 315.000km. 60.000 km Oil exchange rythms. No oil filled in between. No issues. Drives like new
if the V8 was an automatic that would have been a hell of a race.. The problem with V8 is gear conversion ratio, automatic is faster when it comes to gear conversion ratio. The Hilux is lighter in weight compared to its counter part, the 4 cylinder Landcruiser.
Given a reasonable curve/delivery, 500Nm should always be faster than 430Nm all else equal. Toyota's truly amazing achievement isn't that the 4 cylinder if faster. It is the mind bending ability to get so little power and torque out of such a large engine. Kinda reminds me of sub 200hp large capacity American pushrod V8s shortly after emission controls came in.
Paul, as a lol can we have every 1GD 2.8L powered Toyota in a drag race? HiLux, Fortuner, Prado, LC70, Coaster (don’t forget Coaster!) etc. That would be hilarious
Even if you put just a full 3 inch exhaust on the v8 I would be surprised with the results be a lot closer I would think as it can breathe my factory v& struggled to rev due to exhaust
With a diesel, fuel is power and unless you add fuel you wont make more hp, i ran a test on my ute where i kept the rail pressure and injector duration the same for both runs, on the first run i adjusted the wastegate on the turbo to 26psi and on the second run i adjusted it to 38 psi and did a 0-100 on both settings and the difference was that negligible that you could rule no difference Only difference i documented was significantly lower EGTS on the high boost run

Is that Oil Temp or Oil Pressure on the Dash? I see the 4-cylinder is quite higher when compared to the V8.
It’s oil pressure
I would still prefer the old 79 series. Reliability and durability in Papua New, Guinea
Why don't you test the Hilux 4.0 V6?
One point to take away from this is yes, the 4 cylinders are a small motor but engineered to produce more power. The v8 will be just run in by the time those 4 cylinder vehicles are ready for a rebuild. I suppose not many people buy vehicles with the thought of keeping them for long these days.
I am not so sure about that. My six year old Mercedes Sprinter 4 cylinder 2.2l Diesel has 315.000km. 60.000 km Oil exchange rythms. No oil filled in between. No issues. Drives like new
@ my Peuget 1.6 litre diesel after regular oil changes just went to pieces after 80000 klms. I could not justify spending my life under the bonnet
@ does your Mercedes pull 3 tonne caravans around Australia at ridiculous 100 kph , carry heavy payloads or pull builders trailers around?
You should do the same test but towing a 2000kg van.
Can u try the 1/4 mile again cause a 1/4 mile is only just over 400 metres
no replacement for displacement, the 4 cylinder will be revving it's ring out while the v8 would be purring.
Where is de nissan navara
After 10 yrs & 300,000km I’d be happy in the land cruiser
Why does it look like Paul is launching in 2nd gear?
if the V8 was an automatic that would have been a hell of a race.. The problem with V8 is gear conversion ratio, automatic is faster when it comes to gear conversion ratio. The Hilux is lighter in weight compared to its counter part, the 4 cylinder Landcruiser.
8:58 The odometer looks so old on that “ new “ 79.
It depends on the man behind the wheels.
How? Plant the pedal faster?
@@mitchell5064 More like plant the accelerator down and whipp your legs off the cluth pedal and off you go.
Diff ratios in the cruiser vs the hilux will play a huge part in how the power and torque is put to the ground.
So it’s still an uneven match.
HAHA love this! Fun to see non-race cars racing haha
I don't get it. The white LC is a V8?
It looks the exactly the same as the 2024. Has the front been changed?
The 2024 facelift has the V8 option
You can choose v8 or 4 cyl now, why anyone would pick the v8 is beyond me haha
Man, listening to that V8 during the drag race is torture... shame, it's not made for racing.
Are u on hand brake?😊
4 x 4 are not designed to drag race try going up a big sandy hill with soft sand and see if the V8 has more power to get up then turbos
Were all cars on the exact same tyre?
Toyota not taking orders on V8 70 series and never will again. My dealer gave me news yesterday.
What about the 3.0 ltd engine
I’ll take the V8 Land Cruiser for longevity!
Request LC 70 vs Hilux Rangga
Any chance you do a drag race of them under load with like a 2 tonne trailer or something like that
Did you not watch the video haha
@@Bigsoot7393 Yes but they didn’t do a side by side video comparison which would have been nice
Some v8 are lower hp and higher torque correct me if I'm right or wrong
90-110 for over taking would be interesting
Why don't they update the v8 and then do the test
The problem is the 70 series should have been redesigned years ago with the drive train of the 200 series, then your 4 cylinders would be miles behind
Wow whats the point? Like to see which truck can pull a heavyer load
I have a 2.8 hilux it pulls heavily loads easily. Came from a 4.2t patrol. 7k of engine bolt ons, hilux pisses all over it., just saying.
Had a Hilux it pulled but not as easy as the 79 V8
And then there was the DFP issue but won't go in to that
And the hilux is towards the end of the performance for its class. Ouch
Lol keep saving mate
Battle of the diesel slugs😆😆😆
How can they only obtain 202 hp from a 4.5L V8 turbo diesel?
Paul, as a lol can we have every 1GD 2.8L powered Toyota in a drag race? HiLux, Fortuner, Prado, LC70, Coaster (don’t forget Coaster!) etc.
That would be hilarious
😂 now that would be funny!
When they do these tests i just dont understand why they never use the same variation of vehicle. You've got a 4 door ute, a 2 door ute and a wagon!
The B L O O D Y H I L U X ftw 🏆
Which motor will get to 1 million kays , which ones will get half that and will be worn out
Even if you put just a full 3 inch exhaust on the v8 I would be surprised with the results be a lot closer I would think as it can breathe my factory v& struggled to rev due to exhaust
Injectors and remove the emission regulations
Makes bugger all diference, what you think is additional power is just a placebo affect because your hearing the engine more
With a diesel, fuel is power and unless you add fuel you wont make more hp, i ran a test on my ute where i kept the rail pressure and injector duration the same for both runs, on the first run i adjusted the wastegate on the turbo to 26psi and on the second run i adjusted it to 38 psi and did a 0-100 on both settings and the difference was that negligible that you could rule no difference
Only difference i documented was significantly lower EGTS on the high boost run
Check out Ronny Dahls test with his modified V8 against a stock 4 cyl pulling a big van.
Quite the eye opener.
@@Eamonn_kelly1you are 100% correct, people often tend to think of tuning diesels in the same terms as turbo petrol engines. You don’t get more power from a diesel without adding more fuel.
Sooo what’s the point in the 4 cylinder 70 series?
Because it’s better than the v8 in every single way?
@@Bigsoot7393 buy a hilux
