Had my daughters rehearsal dinner @ Salt Lick with over a 100 guests, 1 of the very Best times of my life ! Family Friends & Food ! The Absolute Best !!!
As a long time resident of Austin I have eaten at this place MANY times over the last 40 years. One thing he didn't mention, and one of my favorite things about this place, is you can get select BBQ all you can eat for a reasonable price. As much as you can handle they keep bringing it out!
We used to go to school and eventually lived out there for about five years. We loved going to salt lick. The drive through the hill country, the wait with the live band on the weekends, the byob while you wait. We even had them cater my wedding. I was always curious how big their kitchen was.
My wife and I had our rehearsal dinner here. Very few people on either side had been before. I have never been thanked more in my life after it was done. 🤣
You sure are. I had a GF from Texas and she actually brought me a full bag of BBQ when she came to NYC . You cant find real BBQ in NYC. DOn;t believe the lies of Nyers. They have no idea what their talking about when they say they have real BBQ lol.
My cousin Tim lives with his native Texan wife in Round Rock, an Austin suburb. I visited them both 1 month ago for the solar eclipse. Our first stop after I landed in Austin was the Salt Lick! 1 hour wait to get in, but well worth the wait. Best BBQ I’ve ever had in my life! There were cords of oak wood just outside, stacked and ready for the pit. Rivaled only by Terry Black’s! The Salt Lick is indescribably delicious, and the sauces are perfect! They enhance the flavor of the meat without overpowering the meat or being overpowered by the meat. The meat alone is worth the price of admission, but the meat and the sauce are greater than the sum of their parts! I’ve done enough drooling! 🤤 The Salt Lick is mandatory for all Austin tourists!
Actually, I live near them and asked them years ago and it's an Asian/Thai based cole slaw... I talked to them about it years ago. The family who owns it actually married someone from there who designed the recipe, or it least that's what they told us... If I remember correctly, back then they had two types, don't know about now...
@@johnnunn8688 It's not salty like sauerkraut. The main point is, it's not sweet like a lot of cole slaws are. I don't like most cole slaw, but I really like Salt Lick's version
Every time I visit Austin (about once a year) I visit the Salt Lick. But that's not all! If you're flying out of Austin, be sure to stop at the Salt Lick restaurant at the airport and order a brisket breakfast burrito - they are simply amazing!
Lived in Central Texas for 52 years, this place is hit or miss! Sorry, but honesty is the best sign of integrity. I would try Backwoods BBQ in Fredericksburg! Ask King George.
This video is right on time. I'm heading to San Antonio in a few days and this place is an hour away. I've already told my wife that this is a must while we're in Texas.
I have been to texas twice. Both times for work in the oilfield. Texas BBQ joints were my favorite because after 14 hour days i just wanted to eat. Hit up a BBQ joint amd they slap what you want on a plate within 2 minutes of walking in the door. Love it.

Lately, I’ve been so bored watching shows, but I found myself mesmerized by you and the food here. Thank you for the good show and made me hungry. Like I said I was mesmerized and it felt good to be really into something. Thank you.
I've been to saltlick, the bbq is definitely not the best but it is good. It's more hype and inflated prices. The scenery is nice and it's a great spot to relax with the family.
As a Texan I'm averse to sauces. That being said I absolutely love the sauce here. What a great place to eat and a wonderfully impressive place to take guests. And the coleslaw here is top notch...it's very different to traditional slaw and on a hot day it's very refreshing.
Sonny great Vid! I also am from Mn, my Brother and I did a weekend BBQ tour that started off with the Houston Livestock show and Rodeo BBQ contest, then we headed up to Lexington to go to Snows then over to Lockhart to hit up Smitty’s, Kreuz and Blacks then over to Austin for Franklins and a short trip out to Salt lick BBQout in Driftwood. Loved them all, what a great time! I never imagined the Salt licks cookers were so huge but based on the size of that place it’s not surprising. IMHO I thought the Best BBQ. I had during that whole trip was the smoked Turkey breast at Franklins, yes after eating BBQ all over the Texas, it was the best thing I remember so you know it was good.
I went there 20 years ago. Two things to know: 1) It's(or was) a "dry" location, so you have to BYOB; 2) Their main sauce is mustard-based (ie, not Texas style). Overall, it was great and doesn't look like it has changed much.
I have been there once. It was a great experience, beautiful surroundings and amazing food. I bought the cook book and the owner signed. Awesome experience
The reason such heavy sides are served is because the menu was originally designed for hard working folk who needed the calories to get them through a day of hard work and physical labor.
When you have such a large platter to taste test it would be great to see you share the time and meal with some locals. Better yet, fly in Thuyen so we can enjoy her making faces at the food!
I love chicken and eat it almost every day, because I make it for my dogs. But that chicken drumstick looked bloody on the end part and the bone itself looked bloody as Hell. Great video, and I love BBQ no matter what it is.
That's not blood lol, when cooked chicken has that color next to the bone, its bone marrow pigment that seeped into the meat. That chicken is certainly cooked well.
Salt Lick in Driftwood is a can't miss if you're in the Austin area. They aren't the "Best BBQ in Texas" as the title says by any stretch, but they are very good and the location is amazing.
Those beef ribs are different because they are back ribs rather than short ribs. Back ribs normally have less meat on them because they are right next to the rib roast (think prime rib/ribeye). Since the rib roast is a rather valuable cut, when bones are separated from the roast, butchers cut close to the bone so as to maximize profits.
Yeah, isn't that a bunch of crap? It is bad enough that beef ribs are generally tough and mostly bone, but these local Texas butchers cut away the meat and leave you dog food. Beef ribs really suck. I cook pork ribs exclusively.
I've been here a few times and it's a great experience. The place is out of the city and even when really busy, there's always some open tables. I think what is different is the coleslaw. It's not the standard mayo creamy stuff, but it's vinegary and acidic but not overly so. It's very refreshing when chowing down on all that fatty brisket.
That selection on your meat platter looked absolutely amazing and delicious. The only thing I’d say that would be missing off there for me would be a shoulder of bacon. This is something Irish people cook up. You basically have a pork picnic roast that has been cured. Then you boil it up in a large pot remove it from the water shred up cabbage and added to the water so all the salt and bacon flavour is absorbed into the cabbage. You cook it up and serve it with the potatoes. Three ingredient dish. That’s delicious bacon, cabbage and potatoes. Now granted, bacon, cabbage and potatoes wouldn’t go well on that platter what the shoulder of bacon would think of pulled pork but bacon flavour this is what it is. In my opinion, it is the greatest piece of bacon on the planet. It is better than streaky bacon. It is better than back bacon. It is better than the colour of bacon and it’s better than a ham without a doubt. The flavour the texture everything about it it’s just iconic. You have all the flavour from the fat absorbed into the meat. You have all the flavour coming from the bone, absorbed into the meat. Without a doubt, it is easily one of the best pieces of meat you will eat in your life. So that amazing platter. The only thing missing from that for me would be the shoulder of bacon. Now I’m an Irishman, true and true, born in the country and moved to North America. However, Texas does have some Irish immigrants that set up communities back in 1828. So Texas could easily embrace the shoulder of bacon. I wonder what it would be like smoked.
Sir, this is a video about Texas BBQ. What does an Irish dish have to do with BBQ, especially if you have never tried it before? Just go look for a video about Bacon if it is that important to you. Seriously.
@@SANTIS2099 I'm aware it was about Texas barbecue but this also displayed a fantastic delicious meat platter . As a previous Traeger+ user, I'm now a loyal Asmoke convert! The precision temperature control and the ASCA technology make a massive difference in my BBQ game. I've noticed my meats come out succulent, with a richer, smokier flavor. It's all thanks to using wood pellets, which also come in different flavors to experiment with. The compact and lightweight design of the Asmoke grill makes it a breeze to take on camping and tailgating trips. Plus, the battery lasts for up to 10 hours, so I can grill all day without worrying about running out of power! The Asmoke app with its temp monitoring and recipe sharing is a game-changer too. The transition from Traeger+ to Asmoke has truly elevated my BBQ experience. Highly recommended for any BBQ enthusiast out there! #Asmoke
Sonny, Most folks don't know that Original Buffalo Wing sauce was/is mustard base. So this joint gets my OTR Trucker vote, as a must eat. I know this might sound strange, but that BBQ looked sexy af. I'm sitting here ready to chew my own arm off, with only hot dogs in my fridge. You make me laugh, whenever you talk about Minnesota, and Mayonnaise. I had a gf from there, and she had no problem Hoovering down a tablespoon of mayo after making some Mayo drenched "Heathy Salad". When we broke up, my heart hurt, but not from missing her. From all the fucking mayo on everything! I lost 85 pounds within the first 3 months. God Bless Texas! (says the man from Philly) WB
Since beans are a dry good that can last a long time, cowboys relied on them for food, as well as a good source protein. So it was a common side at a lot of meals, especially when BBQ was served. Therefore, it's kind of tradition for beans to be served with BBQ.
Use to work there. The Brisket is slowly cooked over two days. The meat you see when you walk in has been through the full cooking process. And is mainly on the grill to stay warm. It was good food though. Did enjoy working there too
Nope. I worked there. The brisket is not cooked for 2 days. Its cooked in the back on garbage commercial smokers, then stored in a refrigerator, then reheated on the pit. Its all show and not that good. The Californians love it.
BEST BBQ ?????? not really tbh buddy... went there and was soooooo disapointed with the quality of the meal. They forgot our order, 45 min l8er, the server came to see us and apologized then, the 2 plate that were served WERE COLD. Really bad.... i could say more about my experience but, not here to complain. i rate this BBQ experience a 1/10. Ambiance & atmosphere & beauty of the pit 9/10. Dont get me wrong, i was looking forward to coming here after YEAR'S of checking video's of people describing their experience. Drove 2.800 KM to go there to be sad. :( sorry.

#Asmoke
Sonny,
Most folks don't know that Original Buffalo Wing sauce was/is mustard base.
I had a gf from there, and she had no problem Hoovering down a tablespoon
of mayo after making some Mayo drenched "Heathy Salad".
When we broke up, my heart hurt, but not from missing her.
From all the fucking mayo on everything!
I lost 85 pounds within the first 3 months.
God Bless Texas! (says the man from Philly)

When the Why Files theme comes on, you know Sonny is excited about that pulled pork 😅
You get to taste different delicacies, best job ever👍
My mouth has been watering through this entire video
Since beans are a dry good that can last a long time, cowboys relied on them for food, as well as a good source protein. So it was a common side at a lot of meals, especially when BBQ was served. Therefore, it's kind of tradition for beans to be served with BBQ.
Wow!!! A place I have actually been! .... not since I was like 10 (27 yrs ago), but it was amazing back then, too!
Love your food videos man keep making good vids !
Yes I liked my own comment
Just so you know Sonny. I wouldn't mind the pork and beef ribs through the phone 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 salavating the entire 13 mins.

:( sorry.
