One thing I can say, is that Panasonic has come a long way with the S5ii/x and the G9ii. These two cameras are game changers for Panasonic. I wish I could own them all.
Great comparison. I’ve noticed on S5ii IBiS-only now has warpy effect. Your tests confirmed it. It seems now you definitely need to use e-stabilization (at least on low/standard) whenever handheld, to avoid warp effect.
To me the most useful thing is seeing that the basic E stabilization is great - high E stabilization might be needed for even rougher situations, but for the walk and vlog that you tested, basic seemed more than good enough.
I've got the vanilla S5 and S5iiX. I love/hate gimbals. Love what they do, but despise constant balancing and storage. Even if this update decreases gimbal use by even 1/3, it's a game changer. That means many, many more situations where I can use IBIS in place of lugging around a gimbal. The improved IBIS and autofocus (not to mention open gate, internal ProRes, internal 10-bit 422 6K, etc) has made the S5 series spectacular. S5iiX could be $3,500 and still be a steal (it's sub $2k).
Nice! I've been playing around with this and on my S5ii I think the "std" E-stab is the sweet spot. " High" has a crop size that is just shy of switching to ASPC. If you get bored, it would be interesting to see what effect "std" and "high" have on rolling shutter....I don't know what a fair and real life test for that would be as most examples are extreme whip pans which I don't think are a realistic representation of typical everyday shooting.
When I bought the s5ii a year ago and conducted stabilization tests with sigma 24-70, I did not notice that the standard e-stabilization had any effect. I noticed in your video that she almost completely removed the wobbly corners, is that true?
When it came out, in wide angle lenses, there was still woobles on the corners, which they improved quite a lot through the updates. I tried a 14mm FF with the E-Stab only, and works like a charm.
@@edvelfilmsthank you, I thought the problem was never solved, they didn’t write anywhere that standard electronic stabilization began to work betterthank you, I thought the problem was never solved, they didn’t write anywhere that standard electronic stabilization began to work better
Hi Shane! Thanks for the comparison! Regarding the S5II I noticed the heavy magenta cast in Natural profile seems to be gone after the latest update, did you notice that too?
The lens you used for g9ii has noticeable vinette. Just a note for not forgeting it on some client or something. Apart from that amazing job I really like your videos!
100%. Some of the shots were a bit blown out so I had to pull the highlights down in post. I wasn't using ND filters due to the wide-angle lenses. Cheers!
I think you need to stop down the aperture on the g9 ii. The reason for the weird wobble effect looks to be vignetting. Try stopping down to f2.8 or f4. Just a suggestion. Great video by the way. 👍
Just filmed on an art fair with my Lumix S5 ii - with DJI RS3 mini gimbal and without, but with high e-stabilisation. And now I will soon sell my gimbal.
Hi, everyone! This video test was requested in the comment section, so thanks for the idea! This test could go either way, depending on which mode you're in - let me know what you think of the results. I just wanted to let you know this was all shot in the Natural Picture Profile in Aperture Priority mode.
Well done! Both great…definitely better than most! Now I’m hoping the new LUMIX Rangefinder in the rumour mill for May will also have great IBIS, PDAF all in a small body! Fingers crossed!
Really good comparison! Both camera's are showing excellent results! The bigger crop on the S5XII could be related to the lens distortion (fish eye effect). Prime lenses are much better in flat field view than zoom lenses. Almost nobody detects a distortion of 1% in a photo from a zoom lens but the effect is ugly visible in a not cropped stabilized video. I do not believe the crop with stabilization is depended on both of the used camera's I think it is the lens.
Hi Geeky Nerdy Techy, the corners seem to flicker between slight changes of brightness with the estabilisation. Do you know if it’s due to some vignetting issues and the software trying to manipulate the image constantly and therefore introducing a vignetting-flickering issue?
@@GeekyNerdyTechy GH5II. My worry is that whatever is needed is part of the S5II/X / G9II "Active I.S." feature, as this hasn't been added to the original S5 either.

I saw somewhere else that the s5iix + estab on high makes it almost a perfect apsc crop, turning the s5 series in the ultimate s35 video beast with perfect stabe and 4 60p without crop (already in apsc). Ideal for the sigma apsc series in L mount! Another thing: what causes the vignetting in the estab modes on the g9ii?
I don't own either of these cameras, but does either have vignetting correction available in video? The wobbly vignetting makes the video unusable on both cameras, but especially on the G9 II, no matter the stabilization method.
Haven’t needed a gimbal for my s5ii since last year, and now I’m considering selling my gimbal because of this update. It feels like some gyro Blackmagic the way they changed this camera
2:00 & 2:42 I really notice the vignetting of the 9mm f1.7 bouncing around like crazy in the corners through the IBIS + E-stab and I really dislike the effect. Better get another lens for MFT with less vignette..
I had to bring down the exposure a bit in post, because it was so bright with some of these shots. The clouds were all over the place. I'm tipping it made that worse due to the highlight reduction.
4K60p crops to a 1.5x from the FF, and the E-Stab High crops an additional of 1.4x. So, let's say you wanna record on 4K60p with E-Stab High, just do the math. 24 x 1.5 = 36mm (FOVequiv) for APS-C mode which is 4K60p 36 x 1.4 = 50.4mm (FOV equiv) for the E-Stab High If you need more flexibility, you can use 4K30p, so you can switch between FF and APS-C mode unlike in 4K60p. I noticed also that with the crop of E-Stab High, you can notice a sub 4K resolution if you pixel peep, but still quite good if you ask me.

We NEED to have someone try EOIS HIGH with the Sigma 10-18mm in FF mode. My bet is that would be the widest and most stable option.
Great video, what AF settings are you using on the G9 II? I am confused by the different sensitivity options.
It's set to default (no custom settings) with the human/eye/face detection mode on. This mode works better than just eye tracking. :)
For refrence all modes only work in static and cannot be used when panning? So on a gimbal tracking could be trouble at times?Great Vid. Thank You

The shot was blown out a bit due to not having an ND filter, I had to reduce that in post which might make it more obvious.
Thank you. Great demonstration.
Does the crop during e-stabilization lower image quality in 4k or is the g9ii oversampling?
It's almost a 6k sensor so I am pretty sure it's oversampled, but I'm not 100% sure. The image quality of 4k on this camera is great with e-stab on.
Just fixing the wobbly corners in standard e-stabilisation would be amazing for me. Would love it if Panasonic could bring it to older cameras...

That's for vlogging. I'd be more interested in 50mm and longer performance to be honest. That's what I use for work most of the time.
You walk with a 50mm? For static shots and panning, IBIS has been good since the GH5, EM1ii days.

Are the crops the same in APSc mode?
Excellent question, I don't think so, as the FF crop is right about the APS-C crop, but I'll double-check.
4K60p crops to a 1.5x from the FF, and the E-Stab High crops an additional of 1.4x.
So, let's say you wanna record on 4K60p with E-Stab High, just do the math.
24 x 1.5 = 36mm (FOVequiv) for APS-C mode which is 4K60p
36 x 1.4 = 50.4mm (FOV equiv) for the E-Stab High
If you need more flexibility, you can use 4K30p, so you can switch between FF and APS-C mode unlike in 4K60p.
I noticed also that with the crop of E-Stab High, you can notice a sub 4K resolution if you pixel peep, but still quite good if you ask me.
Is it true that rolling shutter is omitted with high e-stabilization?
Rolling shutter due to camera shake is almost eliminated, yes.
