  • Why Won't It Crank?
    I have several of these Kia Sedona Vans and I've had more than one of them have this same problem. The previous times, we replaced the IPM module, had it reprogrammed by the Kia dealership, and the issue was resolved. We tried the same thing on this van and it worked for a few days at best and has repeated ever since. We have of course tested the battery and starter and the neutral position switch. Any other ideas what could be keeping this van from cranking when you turn the key?
    It is interesting to note that the van went almost a minute and a half the first time before it cranked and then every time after the wait time was less until it had no hesitation at all.

    I've been having the same issue with my 2007 Sedona. At first, I thought it was the starter relay. Replacing didn't help. Also pulled a memory fuse as recommended by another video, didn't help. Your method worked, thanks! It went a month before the same thing happened again. Now it happens a few times a week but will always start after about a minute and a half, like in your video. If find any more info, please let us know. I noticed another video something about bypassing with the anti-theft in the IPM, but it entails talking apart the entire dash. If you had already replace the IPM though, not sure it would fix the issue.

    It is the anti-theft control device which has senors in the key fob, ignition switch, doors, hood, computer, etc. If it will not start but the dashboard has power with indicator lights on, it is the anti-theft device which Kia Sedona especially has a problem with. To bypass it, turn the key to the right twice on the driver's side door. You must do this everytime you drive your car. If you plug an engine analyzer on it while it is having the problem it will give a code or should. If you start your car after it will not start, (like in video) it wipes out the error code so the problem cannot be determined. Sort of catching it in the act then analyzing it. It will also activate the theft device and cause you unable to not start if the senor in the ignition switch "believes" it is a "bad key" or bad fob sensor.

    Below the shifter on the right there is a shifter position switch and a module to the right of it that tell the van if it is in park and can be started so once I replaced both of those the van worked fine starting.

    My 2009 Sedona set off the security alarm when it wouldn't start and it's never done that before and I don't know why it did it but however I didn't try it in the ignition but I put the key in the driver's door and turned it to unlock for 30 seconds and that let it start. That was the first fix I found about a lot of Kia vehicles. It actually said to put it in the passenger door on the driver side but my sliding passenger door does not have a key lock so I just took a chance and tried it on the drivers door

    • @michaelfirey
      @michaelfirey  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you quickly turn the key in the door twice in a row it will unlock and disable alarms. Great for when your key fob dies.

      @@randymiller3998 we replaced the ipm module a few months ago which likely fixed the original problem. This most recent problem appears to have been the starter. It bench tested fine but we haven't had issues for the past few days after putting in a new starter. I won't be confident until a few more days / weeks pass. The plastic connector on the starter was also brittle and broken so we replaced that as well. Fingers crossed!

      @@michaelfirey So far the "newer" key, or spare that hasn't been used much seems to be working. My mechanic said it is usually a worn key that causes this condition, but could be many other things. There's no code to read unless it's "doing the thing" you want diagnosed. I will make a new key as well and hope for the best in the meantime.

    I'm having this problem with my entourage 2007. Already changed the starter - didn't work. Trying to hold the key also doesn't work on mine. Honestly, it is being a pain in the a$$ trying to figure out what the problem is. The mechanic said to try to start the car always on Neutral - not working either. I shook the key yesterday while the key was turned and the car turned on. Don't know if it was a coincidence or what.

    • @michaelfirey
      @michaelfirey  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it's the worst when it's not consistent. If holding the key doesn't work, look up the video on how to short the starter at the engine fuse and relay box. That will give you some clues whether the starter or wiring to the starter is bad.
      If it's the IPM module some people have success hitting the interior fuse panel area hard when trying to start.

      I've waited to be sure but ironically replacing the starter was the final thing that fixed this issue on this van. I replaced the ipm module on another van and it fixed the issue on that van. At this point I don't know if it was a combination of the ipm and the starter or was simply the starter all along. The starter passed testing so I didn't replace it earlier but apparently it made the difference in this situation.
