    He's actually over rotating the shin downward such that his kneecap is facing slightly downwards. And because his shin is moving slightly upwards, his shin ends up rolling into the target which diffuses a lot of the impact energy.
    One of the tips I picked up from a pro Muay Thai fighter is that you leave the knee facing slightly up because the blade of the shin bone is slightly on the inside shin. Luke Rockhold gave the same tip to my son at an autograph signing.
    I used to do a completely horizontal kick and it looked pretty and sounded great on impact, but it didn't seem to translate well to sparring or generate a ton of power. When I first saw a bunch of pro fighters kicking at a 45% angle upwards or even mostly upwards, I thought it was sloppy technique. But when I started sparring and people were catching me with an upward kick because it was a faster more direct kick, I began to change my kick. I started working with some very good kickers and they were all doing the diagonally up kick and it had a lot more power when I held Thai pads for them. All the best Muay Thai fighters seemed to be doing the same thing so I gave it a try.
    What I've found is that while the upward angle might a less efficient impact trajectory, it makes up by being more mechanically efficient, more powerful, and a quicker time to impact due to the straighter path. It also makes it possible to sneak under the elbow and catch the lower rib cage if the kick is accurately thrown. It's also harder to tell if the kick is coming towards the head or the body since they have a very similar trajectory.

      I completely agree! I've had a similar experience to yours. I had to completely "relearn" my kicks when I trained in Thailand: lean back slightly and throw the leg up at about 45degrees with almost completely straight leg and a short snappy twist at the end of the kick, keeping your head pretty still. Nowhere near as much turning as this guy does. And turning your face away like this guy does - big no no!

    • @massivojohnson
      @massivojohnson 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yay, over turning also tears your knee up by twisting it ever so slightly as it impacts. BUT... having said that... the dudes kicks still look good. Better than most I would say. I wouldn't fancy that round my guts after coming out of a sit-down curry meal. good video... really important detail as well that most people ignore unless they are forced to address it.

      ***** I have always had the most luck practicing to kick down. An opponents quadriceps face upwards. Most people can't kick down at the upward facing leg. I was one the better guys at leg kicking in my MMA club. As far as people seeing a kick (punch before you kick) and they are not going to see it coming. Most of the MMA guys would never practice the downward kick.

    • @GeorgeOu
      @GeorgeOu 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Downward kick or horizontal kick makes sense for leg kicks. It's harder to check than a diagonally upward cut kick, though the tradeoff is that it takes longer to reach the target than a cut kick.
      What my problem with the video was that in the video, the student's shin was on a slight upward path which calls for the shin to face slightly up. But the student had the shin facing downward and it caused him to roll the shin into the target such that the outside of his lower leg slapped the target.
      The diagonally upward cut kick to the ribs is far more effective because it sneaks under the elbow and it delivers a much stronger kick. This is the type of kick Crocop used to get liver shot KOs.

    I've done karate, taekwondo, american kickboxing, and now am in Thailand doing muay thai kickboxing. It is funny how much time I have spent modifying and changing my basic roundhouse kick. Thai trainers are very talented, but it is nice to be able to hear the lesson in my native language! Thanks.

      I know exactly where you are coming from, there are huge differences between all those styles as to how a roundhouse kick is thrown. Can lead to many a frustrated student who tries to either train in more than one or transitions. I am glad you enjoyed this great tutorial from Gilly, make sure you check out some of the others on this channel when you get chance and let me know what you think!

    Your student keeps turning his head back as he kicks. Very dangerous. Just pointing it out. Great video!

    • @warriorcollective
      @warriorcollective  9 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      tile late Gilly's student in this video was chosen because of the fact he was a beginner. The point was to emphasise the use of hip in the kick. The student is now, as you rightfully pointed out, turning his head way too much when he kicks but that is something they are very much aware of. He has trained himself out of doing that since this video was made!

    • @PaulGilliganWaterlooStreetGym
      @PaulGilliganWaterlooStreetGym 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      tile late Your eye is distracted for a fraction of a second. Many Thai fighters whip their body and the head loses sight of your opponent. The more important thing is your balance which if your foot is turned you have much more of. Remember in Muay Thai it is the kick that scores not the catch so it you are caught but show balance then you are the superior fighter in that exchange. It is the job of the catcher to off balance you or score with a response. I agree that the head turn is a little excessive but as the student stretches more and practices purposefully then this minor issue will be resolved. I welcome your comments as it makes me acknowledge where I need to grow.

      Christopher Hinton Hey, that means a lot! I have been involved in martial arts all my life, this is hopefully one of my ways of giving back to something that has helped me out so much! I do put a lot of work into it (you may not realise it but the warrior collective is just me, a one man band, to do all the visits, filming etc ha ha) so it is always great to hear cool comments and fantastic feedback! I am a big fan of all the martial arts (as you may have gathered from my mix of videos) and love to travel and meet new people so it is a pleasure in all honesty to do what I do! • @saamagmuaythai
    @saamagmuaythai 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You brought up a good point with the lateral aspect of the muay thai kick. Though the traditional power kick is done at about a 20-30 degree angle--lazy instructors allow and students end up just kicking upwards instead of maintaining that angle or coming more sideways. Question: did you or anyone else notice that your assistant turns his head completely to the rear when he kicks? In Thailand, some trainers will teach a head dip when the kick impacts...but never to turn completely to the rear. Bad habit as you will lose your sight picture completely and risk not being able to react to your opponent's reaction to your kick as quickly.
    Food for thought.

    • @warriorcollective
      @warriorcollective  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      saamagmuaythai glad you enjoyed the vid, you obviously speak from experience. The student used in the tutorial was a beginner. Paul realises that the next step for him is to not turn his head when pivoting for the kick. This was a case of exaggerating the pivot to get the kick, as this was something the student was struggling with, but the head turn was an unnecessary/unwanted product of this. The fundamentals are there to fine tune going forward!

  • @PaulGilliganWaterlooStreetGym
    @PaulGilliganWaterlooStreetGym 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just wish to comment on the head turn with the kick. I apologise for not focusing on the head turn it is something I should of mentioned. As Craig's technique and flexibility improves his hips will come through more and as such will not turn his head. I emphasise the hip turn because many people build false confidence in there kicks who when they spar becomes diminished as there kicks are ineffective. Thank you for pointing out the head turn but please accept that I would always emphasise focus on the target for those who are at the level of fighting. Thank you Stuart for these amazing videos.

      Paul Gilligan Hey, it is a great tutorial, thank you for your time and expertise in order to make it! As I have commented on a number of times, beginners make mistakes, you correct one at a time and in the right mechanical order. The over exaggeration of the head turn is what helped him gain the use and power in the hip for the kick. I am sure that he will reduce that as he gets more experienced! I hope you are well, great haircut ;-)

Straight up with a kink at the top, 45 degrees into the target, 90 degrees into the target and cutting down into the target are all legitimate ways to utilize it. Context is of course important, glad you found it useful though!

The rising oblique kick isn’t wrong at all but it’s a different kick Tae Chieng (oblique kick) which is a very old traditional kick actually. When you see Thai boxers speeding the hundred kicks on the pads, it’s rather the later one.

    This is great, but my question is on the pivot. I've seen different thoughts on how and when to do this. Some say that you should do a 180 degree pivot almost before the kick is thrown so that the heel on the pivoting foot is pointed at the opponent. Others say that the inital pivot should be about 90 degrees. Big problem for me is throwing the kick on a heavy bag vs shadow boxing, since the bag acts as a third limb and helps keep my balance. But with shadowboxing trying a 180 is very difficult. Also not sure whether to "hop" into the pivot or not. And of course, looking at various videos of various fighters shows that there is no one "right" way to do this. I guess I have to find what works and feels right for me. But it's very frustrating at times!

    • @warriorcollective
      @warriorcollective  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Art Golden Each fighter (with guidance from their instructor(s) will develop something of their own way of throwing the same technique (and it will be successful as long as it shares the same mechanics to generate the required force). The pivot is important but how much is required will also depend on the angle of the kick you are throwing. Into fresh air, you have two options, spin the kick all the way through (do a 360 degree circle to take you pack into your stance) or chamber the kick more from your knee and land it forward or back! Listen to your instructor on this one! Glad you enjoyed the vid though!!

    I can understand this better because the guy turns his head along; to show where your body should be facing at the end. can u guys stop acting like know it all. the guy and coach would knew better, but this is a demo and they're splitting the move. this video is good, feels like I'm in his class.

    • @warriorcollective
      @warriorcollective  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The turning of the head is a contentious point but as I have pointed out on a number of occasions now, even top level fighters still do it in order to gain maximum torque in their hips when delivering power roundhouse kicks to the body. There are obviously those that don't and it is a arguable point that turning the head takes the eyes off the opponent but horses for courses and all that. If it works for you and you don't suffer negatively from doing it, go for it!! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I am really glad you enjoyed the video!

    Everytime I twist my hips I end up landing the kick with the outside part of my shin where it is muscle. How do I fix this? Every kick I see on the internet lands with a bend in the knee also. When I kick the bag is the only time I can land on a relatively flat angle and on the shin with a bent leg whereas when I am kicking pads it is almost straight up or at a 45 degree angle.

      med4u1 try to think that muay Thai kick is done by moving your ass instead of your leg. harden your leg muscle don't let it move freely and kept it slightly bend then twist your butt bringing your leg to the target. not thigh moving shin but your hip moving the whole leg and do what ever you need to keep your knee on the thrown leg 20 degree up your shin bone will hit the target. similarly to kicking the bag, you twist your hip more upward. hope this help

    I don't like how he turns his head away from the target as he executes his kick. That should have been corrected.

    • @warriorcollective
      @warriorcollective  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quest Page I think I may have mentioned this before, you are completely correct. This was intentionally a beginner whom the tutorial was done with by the instructor. As you can see, the fighter has got into a bad habit over turning the head as he has progressively got better at pivoting into the roundhouse kick. Sometimes though you have to fix one problem before you can work on another, every beginner is always a work in progress! Thanks for watching!

    .......I see the technique he is using to help him turn his hips, He's turning his head so that he's looking behind himself where the head goes the body follows, good technique yes, BUT any moment that he isn't looking at his opponent, is a vantage for the opponent and an opportunity for them to knock him out. he has to find another feeling or notice another movement of the body that allows him to turn the hip without turning his head to where he cant see his opponent.

    • @warriorcollective
      @warriorcollective  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When I first filmed this tutorial I actually thought along similar lines. However, firstly, this student was at this time a relative novice and the mechanics of the turn had helped him immensely with regards being able to throw the kick. Secondly, I have actually seen a few high level fighters continue utilising this head turn to help drive the kick harder at times. You can of course argue that it leaves you vulnerable as you are not able to see but some still do favour the advantage of more power in the shot through their increased torque. Risk and Reward I guess. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment though!

To me his body doesnt look like a beginner because he looks really fit. Im 23 and just started learning muay thai :( . I hope its not late for me to learn how to deal with bullies >:(

    is this really traditional muay thai? I would say very few, if any, thai fighters twist like that. muaythai is not about single powerful blows like karate, teakwondo but it's geared towards sport and fighting opponents who are skilled. the twist is probably the most minimal because you fight as if your opponent would overcome or evade so you seldom over commit by pivoting too much!
    Don't get me wrong I prefer this kicking style. But I've been influenced by American kickboxing, karate and teakwondo!

      A nice trick I used, get a folding chair, or any other chair u may have that is around hip height, and kick over that keeping your leg parallel to the chair. As you get better ballance begin to lower closer to the top, and I also adjust this to low kicks by using an exercise ball and repeating the process. If that helps you out, awesome! If not, I wish you luck in your future endeavours

    • @warriorcollective

      +Yang Ken The turn of the head here is utilised by this relatively new student to enable a better rotation from his hip into the kick. As you say, this can then become detrimental in fighting situations. However I have known fighters do this and remain successful in the ring. In the context of this video, I think it is acceptable especially as the focus is on applying the hip into the kick. The head turning could be corrected if needed after use of the hip has been fully understood by the fighter. Thanks for commenting!
